Perceiving Today

The Patient The patient is a Person at the mercy of Machines and DoctorsStanding at the threshold Of Life and Death.

2

A Patient suffering at the Hospital. Is this an environment of RECOVERY?(From a mood sketches made by the author at the Umeå University Hospital)

Perceiving Today

Loved onesBrought together In their concern for the individual,They revive memories of the past.It is a time for prayer and optimism,A time to hope for the future,

A time to appreciate Life much more.

The Relatives

Perceiving Today

The Ventilator The Ventilator provides oxygen to a Person,It Breathes,It gives Life.It is a source of Hope,Of Happiness,Of Vitality.

5

The current perception of a Mechanical Ventilator in the minds of people who are not from the medical profession.

(sketched by the author at the Umeå University Hospital)

The Perception Card Game - A soft questionnaire developed by the author to investigate the

subconscious perceptions in the minds of people who worked at Hospitals - of Health, Ventilators,

Nurses, Doctors etc.)

The Nurse A Nurse or Doctor,Operating the VentilatorNurtures the person at this threshold with the help of this Interface.

Nourishes,Cares,Revives.

The Experiment at the Hospital - Images of Nurses and Doctors participating

in a workshop conducted at the Umeå University Hospital to investigate the hidden

aspirations and perception in the minds of the Medical staff who worked at the Hosptial.

Machine is the Message

A Ventilator is a Machine that gives a Hu-man Being the most important energy of Life - Breath.

It should give a message of Hope.It should tell you to “Get Well Soon”.

It should Live and Die with You.

These are objects of Love and good wishes, which one would find at a hospital ICU.

They are messages from Loved Ones.

They are the only present human connection between patient and relative.

INTENTObject of Emotion

Redefining Roles

Primary concerns

1. To re-think the Ventilator Interface

2. Create an experience that pays tribute to the beauty of Life and Growth, rather than digits and graphs.

3. Create a Ventilator Interface that is ‘alive’ and responding to Patients and Relatives alike

4. To design an interaction that underlines the spirit of “Get Well Soon”, rather than sickness and loss.

INTENT

9

A New Genre of Hospitals - Places of OptimismThe collage was prepared to demonstrate the existing emotional language in a hospital and how it could be affected to become something more positive.

SMILE (Alarm and Output Device)

Nurse’s badge

ALARM !

The badge is connected by wireless to the Ventilator Mainframe and sends off an alarm by glowing or vibrating.

Technical Output Device

The badge opens up into a portable mini-screen for the display of tangible output data which is relevant for the Medical professional only.

The Nurse uses this device to read data and the uses the Bloom to change settings.

The Relative and the Patient are spared the emotional trauma of blinking screens and sharp sounds.

DEATH (What happens when a patient dies?)

The Bloom Interface gradually stops glowing With every fading breath. Its petals gradually wilt inward. At the EndIt goes back to where it started. A Drop. A Seed.
