Not really - Grandma played a few tunes on piano after a couple spritzers, and Dad could play ‘the fox went out on a rainy night’ on the guitar.

Piano age 8, until I heard Guns ‘n’ Roses at 16, then guitar and self taught on drums.
What in your memory is your best gig ever?
5 girls when we played and dressed up as 3 different bands at the one gig.

music?Yes, I love it dearly. Am teaching
guitar at Waitetuna School, Rock/Pop band at Te Uku School for music elective, and teaching songs for the Te Ukulele Orchestra (Te Uku School).

Raglan and Kawhia golfers do battle
The Whaingaroa Annual Maori Golf Tournament on Saturday
ended up being a battle between Raglan and Kawhia golfers.
The tournament, which had been running for about 20 years, attracted some good golfers, including a big contingent of golfers from Kawhia, said organiser Sila Sikisini.
About 85 competitors, aged 17 to 60-plus, braved the heat to compete in the tournament, which came hot on the heels of the 2015 NZ Maori Nationals for golfers.
The winners of the Raglan tournament would go into the Tainui National finals next month.

In-form Te Uku motorbike rider sets sights on cross country title
He’s won the junior title as a teen – now, at 20, Jason Dickey is closing in on his dream of
becoming the senior national champ in cross country motorcycling.
“That’s the goal,” he told the Chronicle this week from the 190-hectare farm at Te Uku where this year he’s working as a contract milker for parents Grant and Marlene.
It’s the property on which Jason grew up – and where he trained in the rough, tough sport in which he’s now hoping to make it all the way to the top nationally.
The Kawasaki KX250F rider’s well on his way. Jason last Saturday made it two in a row in the Raglan Rocx four-hour cross-country event at Ohautira Road and, the weekend before, won the second round of Huntly Motorcycle Club’s Bel Ray series (the final round’s at Bombay on February 8).
Jason’s father took out the prestigious annual series twice as a senior 20-odd years ago. “I won it the first year it ran,” says Grant.
But these days he’s happy to leave the racing to his son, who’s competed since the age of 12.
Jason’s got a natural eye for “picking lines,” adds Grant, explaining the way he tackles the rough stuff to get the smoothest ride.
In the second round of the Bel Ray series at Naike, Jason snatched an early lead over four-time and current national cross-country champion Adrian Smith of Mokau (Yamaha YZ250F), continuing on to what Bikesport NZ’s Andy McGechan described as an “impressive” win.
The authoritative motorcycling writer described Jason as “unstoppable” from the opening lap, even though Smith dropped out with a flat tyre soon afterwards.
“Not many can beat him,” says Grant Dickey of Smith, a veteran motorcycle star who’s raced worldwide and is in fact Jason’s idol.
Jason confirms he’d “like to beat him” at the New Zealand cross country championships running from February through to May, with two rounds in the North Island and two in the South. “I know if I have a good ride I can,” he adds.
Not that there’s any animosity between competitors, say father and son. It’s a family sport with opposing teams helping each other out for the thrill of the race, as opposed to the “cut-throat” world of motocross racing.
Jason’s regular training regime incorporates some running and a ride once
or twice a week, either on his own turf or at a mate and fellow rider’s farm in Ruapuke.
As a senior he’s been fifth best rider in the country in 2012, number two in 2013 and third best last year. If his recent results are a guide, getting that number one ranking this year could well be on the cards.

Described as ‘modern day hippies,’ NZ’s very first My Kitchen Rules
winners Neena Truscott and Belinda MacDonald are all about foraging, raw organic foods and healthy eating and this weekend Neena will be bringing her food knowledge to Raglan’s own Little Food Fest.
Throughout the course of the competition, the holistic health coach and her cooking partner championed nutritional eating and continued to educate people about the medicinal qualities of food as well as the amount of edible goodies available to us in our own backyards.
Hailing from Cambridge, the mother of three is now starting their fledgling enterprise The Green Kitchen. “There is a real need to bridge the ancestral gap and get back to eating whole foods the way we used to,” says Neena.
Neena will be a special guest at the Fuel Tank stand, a mobile food truck all about
feeding the hunger with good coffee, real food and ice cold drinks. A new business started by Raglan resident Nicki Cleaver and business partner Rachel Turney, Fuel Tank can usually be found parked between Manu and Whale Bay on weekends and popping up in different locations throughout the week.
Neena’s new business The Green Kitchen is a boutique foodie website that acts as a platform for health and wellness.
“When thinking about wellness it’s easy to overlook all of the things that contribute to our sense of fulfillment and nourishment. It’s not just the food we eat, but all of the other factors present in our daily lives.” Neena says, “come and have a chat with me this Sunday between 12 and 2pm at the Little Food Fest in Raglan”.

Raglan surfer Billy Stairmand lived up to his favourite tag at the 2015 Billabong National
Surfing Championships on Saturday, winning the Open Men’s Division in ferocious conditions at Piha Beach.
The swell built throughout the day until the final of the Open Men’s Division, when the swell peaked over 2.0m, making for a challenging showdown between New Zealand’s best surfers.
Stairmand claimed his fourth title in the division and equals Maz Quinn (Gis) who was also a finalist and placed second. Stairmand is now one title behind record holders Wayne Parkes and Iain Buchanan who have five titles each.
Stairmand took a stranglehold of the final early posting a 9.6 point ride before surfing to another 9.0 point ride and an 18.6 out of 20 point heat total.
Stairmand defeated Maz Quinn (Gisborne) who scored 14.90 in second, Alex Dive (Mount Maunganui) on 11.6 in third and Tane Wallis (Piha) on 11.0 in fourth.
“I had my eyes on that title all week long” said Stairmand. “I felt confident in my surfing and I have a good board under my feet” added Stairmand who said that the conditions were crazy and he had no idea of how he was doing or what scores his opponents had until he exited the water.
“It is good to put my name on the trophy again and take it back to Raglan for another year. It is always amazing to win the Nationals, Maz was hunting for five titles and I was hunting for four and I got it. I am keen to get my name on there as much as possible.”
Auckland surfer Gabriella Sansom (Long Bay) won her first national title in the Open Women’s Division. As the surf built the female surfers had to battle massive waves, some of the finalists getting washed in before the final had started.
Sansom defeated Muriwai surfer Britt Kindred who placed second ahead of Raglan’s Jessica Santorik.
Christchurch surfer Shayne Baxter defended his Stand Up Paddleboard Division title narrowly defeating Raglan’s Daniel Kereopa who placed second ahead of Ben Poulter (Waihi Beach).
Kereopa added to his previous ‘Stand
Up Paddleboard’ trophies with wins in the Over 28 Men’s Division and Over 35 Men’s Division. By way of his finals day performance Kereopa claimed the Peter Byers Award for the Most Outstanding Performance for the event. The accolades continued with his Point Boardriders Club also winning the Interclub Championship.
Raglan’s Armie Armstrong won the Paddleboard Race which was held at the peak of the swell, while Shane Murrell (Auck) placed third ahead of triple finalist Daniel Kereopa.
In the senior men’s divisions titles went to Jeremy Williams (Mnt) in the Over 55s, Raglan’s Geoff Hutchison and Jeremy Hughes finished first and second respectively in the Over 50s and Rick Lasch (Auck) in the Over 45s.
In the 52 year history of the event the National Championships has grown to encompass 23 divisions spread across all disciplines and age groups. Over 290 entries were received for the event. The event was hosted by Lion Rock Boardriders Club.

Beadmaker Peter Hohenberger is looking forward to a busy few days at
his studio in Greenslade Road during the 2015 Raglan Arts Weekend.
Last year, the German-born beadmaker had about 250 people through his studios over the three-day arts weekend, with people interested in his handmade glass beads, how they were made and the beautiful creations that could be made from the beads.
There were few beadmakers in New Zealand, so Peter was a special attraction among the 27 Raglan-based artists who would be opening their studios or be exhibiting their work at the Old School Arts Centre over the arts weekend.
Peter moved to Raglan in 1994, seeking a change from his 25-year professional career in IT in Germany and a five-year career taking German tourists on motorbike tours around New Zealand and the United States.
He was already using glass to make lights, windows and other leadlight creations, and bought half a container of equipment and supplies with him when he and wife Rossi moved to New Zealand.
“I’ve always loved glass. I’d always been fascinated by glass windows in the old church when I was a boy.”
But he got tired of the two-dimensional nature of his leadlight work. Then seven or eight years ago, after watching a beadmaker at work in the ancient glass area of Murano in Venice, Peter was inspired to come back to Raglan and set up a bead studio.
Using beautifully coloured glass rods from Italy and the United States, Peter now made beads that starred in jewellery, keyrings and art pieces, and sold them in New Zealand and Europe.
“I’m not an artist – I’m more of an artisan,” Peter said. “There’s a lot of physics, thermodynamics, chemistry, heat and gravity involved. Then the artist part comes [in].”
But he did it more for the love of art than for the money, and preferred to keep it more as a hobby.
But that did not mean Peter was not a serious beadmaker - proven by his second invitation, as the sole New Zealander, to the prestigious annual beadmakers symposium, Glasperlen Symposium, in the medieval German town of Wertheim later this year. Rachel Benn

Councils move to Water Alert Level 2Hamilton City and Waikato District are moving to Water Alert Level 2 to conserve water use.
A prolonged spell of dry warm weather and high water demand has prompted Waikato District and Hamilton City Councils to move to Water Alert Level 2, effective from Saturday 17 January.
Waipa District Council moved to Water Alert Level 2 earlier this week.
This change to Alert Level 2 means sprinklers and watering systems can only be used on alternate days (e.g. even street numbers on even days; odd street numbers on odd days) between 6- 8am and 6- 8pm, while hand-held hosing can be used any time.
Waikato District Council Waters Manager, Martin Mould said a significant increase in water consumption combined with consistently high temperatures and
a lack of rain has prompted the move to Level 2.
“Although we do need to move to Water Alert Level 2, the ongoing water consumption efforts of the community have not gone unnoticed. We want to thank those who conserved water so far this summer by not leaving their hoses running and doing simple things like waiting until they had a full load before washing clothes or dishes.”

It has been a busy summer for the Raglan Golf Club, with the new
mini-putt course being a welcome addition to its range of attractions.
Club manager Kerry Mason said up to 40 or 50 people a day - mostly families and local people - had been making use of the mini-putt course at the golf club since it was opened just before Christmas.
“It’s been a great summer with the mini-golf and everything. Town’s been so busy and we’ve been lucky with the weather,” Kerry said.
The Raglan Mini-Putt had received good feedback from punters and the club was taking on board their suggestions, such as having music and more shade.
The club had had the mini-putt equipment in storage for a while and thought it would be good for the club and the community to put it into operation.
Some local people had helped the club set it up and local teenagers were manning the course, which was open 11am-5pm during the holidays. Once school started the mini-putt would be open weekends and school holidays.
“It’s here for the long-term,” Kerry said. The mini-putt was also a way for new
people to discover the golf club and all its facilities and events, such as its free holiday programme for children.
The club was also keen to promote
women’s golf with the help of Marnie McGuire - a former Halberg Sportswoman of the Year and the only New Zealander to have won both an Australian and British Golf Open – and was holding a Summer Ambrose Series over summer for women golfers.
Kerry said there had been a few other tournaments and groups visiting the course. Membership of the club was also up.
“The course is in great condition. It’s a real tribute to our greenkeeper.”
The golf course was also a popular venue for functions over summer, with five weddings booked for next month alone.
“It’s so beautiful out here – Raglan’s got a really good name as a destination,” Kerry said.

young travellers to sample a new backpackers with a difference at Waitetuna.
Marketing consultant-turned-accommodation host Scott Townsend says he recognises that being 15 minutes out of Raglan is “the challenge” and has sweetened the deal to give as much value as possible to guests at his home, Scott’s Place, on Old Mountain Road.
That includes not only the free sweet treats but also – at no cost – Wi-Fi, use of a washing machine, coffee, tea, self-help breakfasts, even mountain bikes to go
riding in the countryside. And for $5 he’ll arrange to pick up any guests at the Te Uku Roast Office, where they can have a free Raglan Roast coffee while they wait.
Scott credits Charlie Young of Karioi Lodge with having given him some “very helpful advice” that the out-of-town location was an issue and he’d have to make his place special. So he did.
It’s early days yet but the approach seems to be working. “We’ve been up and running only a few weeks but the response has been quite amazing,” says Scott. “And there’s been a lot of good feedback,” he adds, like it being a home away from home for travellers.
The sprawling two-acre property, set in
a secluded valley surrounded by nature and birdlife, reflects what Scott describes as his passion for mindful wellbeing and healthy living. The main house has extensive decking offering various spots to relax or maybe do yoga, an inside and outside gym and a music area – with a piano – for impromptu jam sessions.
The shelves are stacked with board games – Scott’s favourite is the politically incorrect parlour game Cards Against Humanity – while all around on the walls there is what he describes as “positive propaganda” from the likes of Alan Watts, who Wikipedia says is “best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience”.
Just below the house there’s a recently completed Zen garden and tea-drinking spot – Scott says he does “a bit of Tai chi” – and further down the same path a garden seat he calls “Ida’s love seat” in honour of his German fiancé who built it.
The pathway ends at a clearing where three cabins border the Waitetuna Stream, which is both full of eels and a great swimming spot. Nearby is “La Maison de Liline”, an old garden shed/outhouse renovated by Ida and turned into a library cum meditative spot.
Scott says the library, which offers a book exchange programme, has “heaps” of titles after he bought up about a third of Xtreme Waste’s supply of books at its Kaahu’s Nest shop.
The 27-year-old – dubbed a “Zentrepreneur” by one of his early guests – has dabbled in various business ventures, most recently a website development consultancy that he’s now sold.
He was attracted to opening his own accommodation venture after hosting more than a hundred couchsurfers in recent times.
“I’m enjoying it, travellers are fun,” he says of his Waitetuna venture. “I like the interaction with people who are authentic and real.”

STORY
I had a very happy childhood growing up atTe Uku but as a teenager became quite anangry person. I came to know Jesus when Iwas about 16. The biggest thing thathappened was that I was filled with a joy anda peace that changed everything for me.
When I was about 17 I got baptized andthe Pastor gave me a scripture to read,Phillipians 1:6 God, who began a good work inyou, will carry it on to completion. God startsa work in us and continues to help us if we willlet Him, and I have held onto that promise.That doesn't mean it is always easy but it isgood to have something solid in my life to holdonto, which is what God is.
I married Norris, the guy up the road, andwe have four adult children, two beautifuldaughter in laws and two precious grandsons.It is good to be at the stage where I can watchthem all and be proud.
We are part of a great church in Raglancalled Surfside which is primarily whereNorris’ and my focus has been now for sometime. I love being part of something thatreally cares for its community. It's neat, aseveryone has a part to play. I must admit Ihave a soft spot for the children and haveloved children all my life.
It's just great to see so many children andyoung people, to watch them grow in theirfaith, and to see them reaching out to others.
I love Raglan as a place and thesurroundings are beautiful. I just love thewater and you can't beat swimming and waterskiing, particularly at this time of the year.
I sometimes wonder where I would haveended up had I not decided to follow Christsome 40 years ago. I don't think I would havehad such richness in my life as I do now.

Auckland artist and designer Enuake De’avalo Sirikige paid a visit to Raglan
over the weekend to do a special bit of artwork for new apparel business Magik Viper.
Enu was commissioned to do the signage and artwork by the business owners, Mala Brajkovic, Vinnie Woolston and Maki Nishiyama, who opened the custom apparel printing shop just before Christmas.
The eye-catching piece of art behind the Bow St shops by the tattoo business was all done freehand with aerosol paints, which was the artist’s main medium. Having also worked 20 years in the fashion business meant he understood his brief perfectly.
“I guess with a fashion background and a street art portfolio, it seemed only natural to be doing work for Magik Viper,” he said.
Magik Viper was an offshoot of the three owners’ Bad Things online label, which had
a skate and metal-inspired line of printed apparel. The shop would stock these and other items of streetwear and jewellery.
Bad Things had bought a digital direct-to-garment printer, which could print in full colour and could also print photographs.
“We hadn’t initially planned to open this side of the business, but after buying the machine we thought it would be a great service to offer,” Maki said.
“I think there are a lot of musicians, artists and creative people in Raglan, as well as businesses that could benefit from promoting themselves with merchandise.”
As for Enu, he had impressed the three so much with his artwork that he had been asked to design some prints for them.
He also had caught the eye of other people around Raglan and had been asked by three other local businesses to return to do more artwork. Rachel Benn

Anniversary Weekend music feast
Locals and holiday-makers alike have the chance to experience Paul
Madsen’s nationally acclaimed tribute band, returning by popular demand to The Raglan Club this Anniversary Weekend.
First up on Friday 23rd we’ll be treated to The BeeGees and ‘The Jersey Boys’. The phenomenal success of the global stage show of the same name led Paul and fellow band members Paul Jeffries and Ronnie McGowan recently to put together their own show featuring the songs of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
