Rag Man

Page 2: Rag Man - short presentation

Jonathan is a boy of 11 years old. He is quite bright for his age, but he has no friends and he is never allowed to leave the house, except for school. Living in front of his house there is an old tailor, Mr Blake, who most people believe to be mad. One day he dies all alone. But not quite. Someone else might be living in the tailor’s house. Jonathan goes to find out who is living next door. What he finds is the last creation of the old tailor; a bunch of clothes and buttons and a beating heart. The newly born creature becomes Jonathan’s best friend and favourite hobby. Even a Rag Man needs to learn how to speak and read, what games to play, where in town to go. Jonathan chaperons Rag Man in many occasions until his parents find out. The two friends have to say goodbye.

Short Synopsis

Jonathan

Jonathan is our protagonist. He is 11 years old and he attends a private school. His parents, Craig and Mary, are from the upper middle class and expect him to work hard in order to achieve the plans they have set out for him. Jonathan’s father, a math professor, is particularly keen on having his son pursuing a career in the scientific society. Mary is simply absent or sup-portive of her husband’s plans. Jonathan is therefore bound at home, never al-lowed to see friends or leave his homework. Truth is that he has a much more creative mind, especially for writing. William Shakespeare is his hero and he dreams of becoming a professional writer and studying the great classics in-stead of math and physics.

Rag Man is a man made out of cloth. Mr Blake, a retired tailor from London, made him. The new born creature is left fatherless when Mr Blake dies and it is bound to remain hidden forever till Jonathan discovers that their neighbour’s house is not deserted. The two lonely characters soon become friends. Rag Man is in fact a gentle creature, eager to learn what Jonathan has to teach him and sometimes melancholic about his past. Mr Blake, like a modern Dr Frankenstein, created him in order to have a companion for his old age, being childless and a widowed.
