CURRENT FISHING CONDITIONS
River Conditions
GUNNISON RIVER
If you can find slow moving water close to banks, use streamers…Big Ones, in dark colors – black, olive, purple.
LOWER TAYLOR 5-MILE DOWN
We are one of two companies permitted to fish this section. Floating it with streamers is key at this flow. Wading is impossible or extremely dangerous at this flow. 22 inch cat-bow caught two days ago!
EAST RIVER
Too high!!
UPPER TAYLOR
With the higher flows out of the dam, Mysis shrimp, size 18-22, Brown San Juan Worm, Rainbow Warrior size 18-22. Midges fished at dusk. The key is to find pods of feeding fish, then target them. The Big Boys are deep or under rocks in upper section. 5-6x Floro tippit, white indicator.
ROARING JUDY FISH HATCHERY
The key to fishing the ponds is 5x Florocarbon tippet 10 ft. on an intermediate sinking line. Fish Damsels! Still water nymphs with or without bead can be deadly. These fish see a lot of flies and lures but can be fooled with slow 4 inch strips.
TAYLOR RESERVOIR
Pike! Look for them warming up in the shallows, drop-offs, or near where streams enter. 7-8 wt. rod with sinking line and big streamers. Vary your retrieve until you find something that works. 20-25 lb. test for leader or wire – they’ll chew through anything else.
Just because the rivers are high and off color does not mean the fishing is bad…it’s just adjusting to the conditions. Fish are being caught daily!
