Civil Records and Jewish Tombstones: Identifying and Matching Data By Marcel Glaskie
Before you can match the Jewish tombstone to a civil death record you will have to convert and compare the
Hebrew calendar to the Julian calendar:
Convert the Hebrew year to the civil year by this link: http://www.rosettacalendar.com
Some examples are shown in the chart below. The Hebrew year starts on the 1st of the month of Tishri which is
the first day of Rosh Ha’shana (Jewish New Year) that date fluctuates between August and October in the civil
calendar. When looking at civil death records the hour of death is usually given. To determine which day the
person died, take into account that the Hebrew day starts at nightfall on the previous day shown in this chart.
The chart shows the 1st of Tishri for both the Julian calendar which was used in Eastern Europe particularly in
Romania until 31st of March 1919 and the Gregorian calendar which was used in Western Europe, USA and
many other countries since around the 1750s. On the 31st of March 1919, Romania changed its calendar from
the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar the following day became the 14th
of April 1919.
The year in Hebrew letters is sometimes prefixed with a letter hey ה to indicate five thousand.
This chart indicates the relationship between the three calendars

Examples of tombstones and civil records
from the town of Raducaneni All the following are according to the Julian calendar.
The numbering on tombstones is very rare if not unique to Raducaneni,
it is possible that the Jewish community financed the purchase of the land
by preselling burial plots to the members of the community
giving each purchase a plot number.
