Raducaneni Romania Civil Records and Jewish Tombstones: Identifying and Matching Data By Marcel Glaskie Before you can match the Jewish tombstone to a civil death record you will have to convert and compare the Hebrew calendar to the Julian calendar: Convert the Hebrew year to the civil year by this link: http://www.rosettacalendar.com Some examples are shown in the chart below. The Hebrew year starts on the 1 st of the month of Tishri which is the first day of Rosh Ha’shana (Jewish New Year) that date fluctuates between August and October in the civil calendar. When looking at civil death records the hour of death is usually given. To determine which day the person died, take into account that the Hebrew day starts at nightfall on the previous day shown in this chart. The chart shows the 1 st of Tishri for both the Julian calendar which was used in Eastern Europe particularly in Romania until 31 st of March 1919 and the Gregorian calendar which was used in Western Europe, USA and many other countries since around the 1750s. On the 31 st of March 1919, Romania changed its calendar from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar the following day became the 14 th of April 1919. The year in Hebrew letters is sometimes prefixed with a letter hey הto indicate five thousand. Examples of tombstones and civil records

from the town of Raducaneni All the following are according to the Julian calendar.

The numbering on tombstones is very rare if not unique to Raducaneni,

it is possible that the Jewish community financed the purchase of the land

by preselling burial plots to the members of the community

giving each purchase a plot number.
