The Fairfield Traditional Foods Directory was produced as a part of the Fairfield Refugee Nutrition Project. The Fairfield Refugee Nutrition Project is an activity of the Fairfield Communities for Children and delivered by The NSW Refugee Health Service. Communities for Children is an Australian government initiative funded by the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. Introduction

Living in Australia, for migrants, can be very different from home. Everything around you is new and you may find it difficult to buy what you want. This directory is a guide to finding traditional foods and cooking ingredients in the Fairfield area, including Fairfield, Fairfield Heights, Fairfield West, Carramar and Villawood.

Shops that sell foods from other cultures in the Fairfield area are included in this directory. They are listed according to the type of shop and what foods they sell. We hope you are able to locate stores and buy familiar foods and ingredients with the help of the directory.

1. SUPERMARKET

A supermarket is a place which sells a wide variety of foods and other household items such as cleaning products, medicines, animal food and clothes. In a supermarket, all products are grouped into different categories. There are signs showing what products are in each aisle. In a supermarket you select the things you need and pay at check-outs.

If you cannot find something, or are having difficulty shopping, you can ask the staff to help you.

2. GREENGROCER

A greengrocer is a place which sells fruit and vegetables. The fruit and vegetables are located mainly at the entrance and interior of the shop. Some greengrocers may also sell other food items such as milk, lentils, nuts, pasta and canned items. You are not able to find fresh meat or other household items here. In a greengrocer you select the things you want and pay for them at the check-outs. If you cannot find something, or are having difficulty shopping, you can ask the staff to help you.

3. BUTCHER

A butcher sells fresh meat and poultry, such as chicken. There is often a section selling fresh meat and a section for pre-packaged and processed meat. Meat and poultry is sold according to their weight. You tell the butcher how much and what kind of meat you want. The butcher will cut the meat and poultry for you and you will pay according to the weight. In some butchers they also sell small goods such as herbs, spices and pickles.

If the butcher sells HALAL meat, it is usually shown by a sign at the entrance. If you are not sure, just ask the butcher before buying. In this directory, only HALAL butchers are included.

4. FISH MARKET

A fish market is a place where fresh fish and seafood is sold. Fish and seafood is sold according to their weight. You select how much and what kind of fish or seafood you want. The shop assistant will prepare and clean the fish or seafood for you and you will pay according to the weight.
