True Stories, Captivating Fiction

In a special two-part series, acclaimed lmmaker David Sutherland pro les Robin Charboneau, a 32-year-old divorced single

mother and Oglala Sioux woman living on a North Dakota Reservation. Follow Charboneau over three years as she struggles to raise her children, further her education, heal the wounds of sexual abuse she su ered as a child and battle alcoholism. It is a journey of discovery, heartbreak and, ultimately, redemption.

, from Ken Burns, tells the story of the ve black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in New York City’s Central Park in 1989. The lm chronicles The Central Park Jogger case for the rst time from the perspective of these ve teenagers whose lives were upended by this injustice.

You have the best seat in the house for three terri c concerts this month. Josh Groban performs selections from his most recent CD, , on April 12. The following week, Stephanie Blythe

salutes the legendary Kate Smith. On April 26, Blythe, Kelli O’Hara and Nathan Gunn share the stage in the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic,

and continue through the month. Joining them at 10 p.m. on April 21 is

. This series follows four women with an extraordinary ability to break codes, a skill honed during World War II when they worked undercover at Bletchley Park, the UK’s main decryption establishment.

Now in 1952, the women have returned to civilian life. A series of ghastly murders reunites the team as they set out to decode the pattern behind the crimes.

On April 22, WKAR Radio and TV will honor Earth Day with special programming on all our stations. We invite our friends and members to celebrate Earth Day with WKAR during this one-day pledge drive, while also helping to beautify our own mid-Michigan environment.

Our special programming will include and on WKAR-TV and a

environmental edition.

The Earth Day challenge goal is 1,000 pledges between WKAR Radio and TV. In partnership with the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance, for each pledge you make on Earth Day, one tree will be planted in mid-Michigan. The “1,000 Pledges, 1,000 Trees” goal on April 22 will help not only support programming you love on WKAR Radio and Television, but also help the mid-Michigan environment.

You can make a di erence! Listen. Watch. Pledge.

And thank you!

WKAR Radio Pledge Kicks Off There’s lots to like on WKAR Radio this month and every month! WKAR Radio’s annual on-air fundraising campaign will run . This is one of two annual radio campaigns. You can make a gift to support classical music or news by calling (517) 353-5000 during the campaign or online at WKAR.org.

Make sure you check out our new Classical Club. Club members may select a piece of music to be featured on 90.5 Classical. (See “Hear This!” on page 8 for more details.)

Now is the time to say “thanks” for adding 90.5 Classical music recitals from MSU School of Music’s talented faculty. Let Peter Whorf know he made the right decision when he added

to the WKAR line-up. (This month we are adding an encore of that program ). Tell Mark Schwitzgoebel and Jody Knol that you welcome their classical selections and musical insight each weekday. And let Mark Bashore know that you appreciate a timely look at what’s happening in mid-Michigan every day on

Whether you call our friendly volunteers or make an online gift, just know that WKAR Radio would not be possible without your support. Thank you.

WKAR’s next Community Cinema event will feature the screening of a segment from the

documentary

You’ll see a segment of this lm that traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman, from the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today. MSU pop culture expert Gary Hoppenstand and Derby Vixen Jess Knott will join us for a follow up discussion.

The event takes place at WKAR. Registration for the event

opens April 12 at WKAR.org.

Is Your Stay Tuned Arriving on Time? The mail processing center on Collins Road in Lansing closed in February of this year. As a result, mail sent in the city to another city address could take up to three days for delivery. Operations at the Lansing processing and distribution center were shifted to service centers in Grand Rapids and Pontiac.

WKAR also received an increase in phone calls and emails during this transition from members who had not yet received their latest issue of Stay Tuned.

With nearly 12,000 copies mailed each month, we anticipate that a few may get lost. We work closely with our printer to make sure our mailing list is accurate and complete. We even send the publication at a slightly higher rate to ensure more expedient delivery. Mailings are timed so that WKAR members receive Stay Tuned prior to the rst day of the month.

However, once Stay Tuned is delivered to the U.S. Post O ce, it is out of our hands. What we can do though, is immediately mail another copy to you if you email or call .

True Stories, Captivating Fiction
