    CAL THOMAS

Not so long ago in a vastly different media

environment there were such things as jour-

    nalistic ethics. Reporters were prohibited

from taking trips paid for by individuals or groups

they might cover. They couldnt accept money for

speeches. And they surely could not accept money

or gratuities in exchange for reporting on a story in which a corporationor individual might have an interest. Too much socializing with sources

    was also frowned upon.

Today, when news is sold as a product, like toothpaste and erectile

dysfunction pills, the press has become a subsidiary of the advertising

department, catering to target groups that are most likely to buy advertis-

    ers products.

The ABC News division has taken this one step further. On June 24, it

will essentially become a mouthpiece for the Obama administration andits position on reforming health care. A special, Questions for the Presi-

dent: Prescription for America, moderated by Charles Gibson (who is

old enough to remember the days when a wall separated advertising from

news), will air from the East Room of the White House. Gibson will also

deliver World News Tonight from the White Houses Blue Room.

The programs should not originate from the East Room and Blue

Room. Instead they should be broadcast from Obamas bedroom since

ABC (and much of the slavish media) is in bed with this president.

That the media fix is in on health care is evident from ABCs response

to a request from the Republican National Committee (RNC) that it be

allowed to air opposing views. RNC Chief of Staff Ken McKay wrote to

David Westin, president of ABC News, expressing his deep concern and

disappointment with ABCs astonishing decision to exclude opposing

voices on this critical issue on June 24... In addition to World News

Tonight and the special, ABC will feature reporting on the Obama

health care plan on all of its other news shows. No word yet on whetherany opposing views will be allowed on those programs.

McKay wrote Westin, In the absence of opposition, I am concerned

this event will become a glorified infomercial to promote the Democrat

agenda. Noting that the President has stated time and time again that

he wants a bipartisan debate, McKay wrote that the Republican Partyshould be included in this primetime event, or the (Democratic National

Committee) should pay for your airtime.

ABC News Senior VP Kerry Smith defended the program, saying

ABC is looking for the most thoughtful and diverse voices on the

issue. It is difficult to see how diverse voices will be heard in a show

that features no thoughtful opposition to the Obama plan.

The media have found that Obama sells. With his high approval rat-

ings it appears they are targeting Obama supporters who would tune into

the news equivalent of religious programming on which atheists and

people with different beliefs never appear. In doing these programs from inside the White House, ABC has

thrown its remaining credibility to the wind and becomes an appendage

of their advertisers, the Obama worshippers and the Democratic Party.

Try to imagine this happening in a Republican administration. You

cant, because it would never happen.By the way, guess whos the new director of communications for the

White House Office of Health Reform. Its former ABC News correspon-

dent Linda Douglass, who left journalism last year to join the Obama

    campaign.

This should settle, once and for all, the matter of big media bias. Only

those in complete denial could argue there will be anything fair and

balanced about the ABC programs. And the public, on an Obama high

right now, is going to be the big loser in the end when it awakens to the

erosion of our hard-earned freedoms. But by then it will be too late.

Barry, I am currently renting but considering

purchasing a home while the prices are down.

    What do you suggest?

With the proliferation of foreclosures, rental prices have shot

through the roof. Individuals that had previously been homeown-

ers have driven up the cost of rent. Weve seen this in Boston as the

average rental price for a two-bedroom apartment is in the $1,900 per

    month ballpark.

The government jumped head first into the housing crisis by put-

ting together very attractive home purchase incentive programs. These

programs will stick around for a while but not forever, which makes

this a great time for individuals to consider purchasing while home

prices are still depressed. Rent is also not tax deductible and you are

not building equity in your home.

As an example, lets say you have found a $300,000 home or

condo for sale that you are you like. FHA has a program where you

only need 3.5% as a down payment ($10,500) and qualified buyers

can get an FHA loan at a rate of 3.99% fixed for the first 5 years of

their mortgage. After 5 years, the rate can only go up 1% per year. The

monthly payment on that $300,000 home would only be $1,852 permonth and that includes interest, PMI and even home owners insur-

ance. The key to this equation is that the vast majority of your monthly

payment is tax deductible. Assuming you are in a 25% tax bracket,

your net monthly payment is going to be less than $1,500.

    BILL PRESS

In the interest of full disclosure, I sometimescrave a good burger. So whenever the moodstrikes, I head to the Five Guys closest to

Washingtons Capitol Hill: on New Jersey Avenue, near the new Nationals ballpark.

Too bad I wasnt there on May 29. I couldve shared a cheeseburgerand fries with the commander in chief himself, who dropped in withNBCs Brian Williams to pick up lunch for the gang back at the WhiteHouse. For the crew at Five Guys, it was a once-in-a-lifetime presidentialfast-food fix. For President Obama, it was just another day out on thetown.

Michelle Obama had previously taken her staff out to another FiveGuys location. Obama and Vice President Biden made a surprise lunchrun to Rays Hell Burgers, across the river in Arlington, Va. Almost everySaturday, the Obamas cheer on their daughters soccer games at localschools. And the President and first lady have stepped out recently forhigh-profile date nights in Paris and Washington -- plus dinner and a playin New York City.

Not only that. On many weekends, Obama rounds up friends for afast-paced basketball game. And, now that warm weathers here, he canfrequently escape to one of the local golf courses. In fact, Obama walked

out of the White House, toting his clubs, only 90 minutes after returningfrom a six-day trip to Europe and the Middle East -- while his wife anddaughters were still doing Paris and London.

How unusual. A president and his wife who actually seem to enjoyeach others company and, no matter how difficult it may be, love gettingout of the White House. Which, of course, is driving Republicans crazy.Unwilling to criticize Obamas public policies, theyve decided to attackhis personal lifestyle instead.

So far, Republicans havent condemned Obamas time on the basket-ball court or golf course. It would, after all, be hard for them to do so,given the long hours George W. Bush spent on his mountain bike duringsome of the countrys most pressing problems. Even in hard times, presi-dents need their exercise.

But the date nights proved too much for Republicans to swallow -- es-pecially the First Couples May 30 back-and-forth jaunt to the Big Apple, for which Obama gave a very straightforward explanation. I am taking

my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaignthat I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished, he saidin a statement released by the White House.

That didnt satisfy his critics. No sooner had Marine One left the SouthLawn than the Republican National Committee put out a press releasedenouncing the presidents decision to go out for a night on the town inthe middle of a recession, while General Motors was preparing to file forbankruptcy. And they accused the Obamas of wasting at least $25,000 intaxpayer dollars to pay for the trip, when they could have just as easily --and more cheaply -- gone out for a play at the nearby Kennedy Center.

On Twitter, Republican Chuck Grassley even chastised the presidentfor urging action on health care reform while still in Paris. In a messagedemonstrating the inanity of Twitter and Grassley both, the senator fromIowa wrote: Pres Obama you got nerve while u sightseeing in Paris totell us time to deliver on health care. We still on skedul/even workin/WKEND.

Give me a break. This is the best Republicans can do? There are plentyof legitimate issues they can raise against President Obama, but how hespends downtime with his family is not one of them. Nor is the cost oftheir travel to New York. Dont blame Obama. Hed have been just ashappy taking Amtrak or the Shuttle, which the Secret Service would neverallow. And jetting to New York, by the way, is a lot cheaper, and requiresa much smaller plane, than jetting to Crawford, Texas, for the weekend.

If Republicans really believed in family values, theyd be celebratinga couple that spends time with their kids and each other -- yes, even in themiddle of a recession. I dont get it. Eight years ago, they attacked BillClinton for cheating on his wife. Today, theyre attacking Barack Obamafor not cheating on his wife. Why dont they make up their minds?
