HERE'S HOW SOME OF THE FAMOUS VOICES LOOK

When PHIL Cool( reads the comic strips, grown-ups are youngsters again and everyone likes the "funnies". Phil is "The Quaker Man"

and his enjoyable nonsense is heard from the stations on the National Broadcasting Company network. From the looks of

this picture, "The Quaker Man" gets a kick out of his own foolishness.

MILDRED HUNT is amply justified in claim ing the title of "Radio's Most Popular

Soprano". That is, she would be if she was interested in titles. She

isn't, however, because she is kept too busy with her micro-

phone appearances to be bothered. Every listener

-in has enjoyed Mil- dred's entertainment

and, incidentally, "Radio's Sweet-

heart" is just as easy to

look at as she is to

listen to.

The little lady who is gazing so thoughtfully over her shoulder is a real honest -to -goodness Countess, and if she ever refered to Barcelona, Spain, she could call it "The Old Home Town". She is OLGA MEDOLAGO ALBANI and her charming soprano voice is heard regularly during NBC programs. She came to radio from the stage, is ambitious to be a writer, and, inciden- tally, is proud of her cooking.

The serious gentleman at the bottom of this page belongs to that group of radio personages who add so much to the entertainment qualities of programs and yet remain almost strangers to even the most constant of listeners -in. He is ALWYN E. W. BACH, NBC announcer, and the recipient of the 1930 gold medal for good diction on the radio. His pleasing voice is heard during the Enna Jettick programs, Reminiscences on Sunday night, the Colonial Beacon - light program, and Chesebrough Real Folks broadcast, among others.

Gypsies, Nit Wits, and Two Leading Soloists

Romance-mystery of unknown lands-call of strange adventure-tenderness of burning passion-and from the dim unknown comes the music of EMERY DEUTSCH and his GYPSIES. Lilting melodies and the throbbing strains of forgotten folk songs weave themselves into an exotic picture of strange peoples and strange worlds.

Emery Deutsch is more than a musician. He is a dreamer of dreams and an artist who realizes and understands the eternal quest of mankind for that intangible something called Ro- mance. And with his music he brings to our prosaic lives these things for which we search.

A regular feature of the Columbia network, Deutsch does not confine his activities to his interpretations of Gypsy music. On the contrary he is a constant contributor to radio entertain- ment with a variety of programs. The versatility of his orches- tra and himself may best be judged by a glance at one day's broadcast schedule. At 10:15 A. M. he is on the air with "Harmonies and Contrasts"; at 10:45 he is back with "Melody Parade"; again at 12:00 he presents "Columbia Revue"; he leads the "Columbia Salon Orchestra" at three in the after- noon; the "Gypsy Music Makers" are heard at five o'clock; at 7:15 he presents "The Vagabonds", and at 10:15 he directs "The Gypsy Trail".

Other programs are presented throughout the week in addition to these-which, with orchestrations and rehearsals, keep Mr. Deutsch a very busy man.

When JOHN BARCLAY sings, there is a lot of baritone all in one place at the same time. He measures six feet nine inches and is the tallest radio baritone in captivity. John doesn't mind, however. In fact, he be- lieves his height to be an asset, as the pure air at high altitudes assists him in his singing.

*

MARCIA FREER is unique among radio soloists, as she sings soprano and con- tralto equally well. Miss Freer is best known to radio audiences as the regularly featured soloist on the Paramount -Public Hour over the Columbia System.

"Aha!" she cried, in accents wild, "Give me the papers, or I'll tear up the child!" And here, ladies and gentlemen, are the NIT WITS in a pleasing family portrait entitled "Robinson Crusoe," or "Ten Nights In A Bar Room," direct from the Columbia studios.

Nonser se and plenty of it is the order of the day when the Nit Wits are on the a:r, and you and you and you and even you can't help but like it. Which is just another way of saying that this program is a steady favorite.

Here Are Five Headliners From CBS

GEORGIA BACKUS

Domenico Savino has achieved tre- mendous popularity in a field where few dare to venture, and his success repudiates the statement so often made that the public cares nothing for the classics and is interested only in the popular varieties of music. Savino Tone Pictures are vivid presentations of the classics, and are doing much to establish real appreciation of better music among radio audiences.

DOMENICO SAVINO

Georgia Backus, who has long been one of Columbia's brightest dramatic stars has recently entered on new duties that make her an executive as well as a premier radio actress. Miss Backus was recently ap- pointed Dramatic Director of the Colum- bia Broadcasting System. She has been heard in Arabesque, The Nit Wits, and Majestic's Curiosity Shop, regular Colum- bia features, among other programs.

Mean blues-the kind that send a distinct thrill hopping from one ver- tebra to another along the spinal column-are Irene Beasley's specialty. Irene has just that kind of voice and a broadcast personality that makes her step right out of the receiving set into the room with the listener. She has been heard on the La Palina Smoker program, among others, and, believe it or not, has been known to do a.black- fface skit. But blues are her forte, and how she sings 'em'.

CATHERINE FIELDS

Back of the beautiful soprano voice that delights the Listener -in when Catherine Fields steps be- fore the Columbia microphone are years of study and constant application. Miss Fields, possess- ing a voice of extreme natural beauty, began her musical career as an artist on the violin. The un- usual natural beauty of her voice was discovered as she hummed a tune to herself while waiting for violin audition. She now holds a joint Juillard scholarship for voice and violin.

IRENE BEASLEY

Henry Burbig's dialect comedy and his novelty numbers have earned him a place in the front rank of radio entertainers. And yet, less than ten years ago, he never dreamed of being a radio personage. He was more interested in setting -up exercises and such things, as he was a physical instructor. Not only that, but he was a star of the diamond, too, being a ball player of promi- nence.

HENRY BURBIG

Some More Leaders in the Air Parade

WELCOME LEWIS is the new and popular "bluescaster" of the National Broadcasting Company, and her low pitched voice has al- ready demanded a wide audience. Welcome's voice is pitched even lower than the alto registers, which may be the reason her songs are noted as being among the "hottest". She came to radio from the vaudevil stage and was an instant success.

Introducing Columbia's "Royal Poet of the Organ", the "Mrs. Royal Poet of the Organ," and the little "Royal Poetess of the Organ." JESSE CRAWFORD is a radio veteran and his organ recitals enjoy growing favor. MRS. CRAWFORD is also a musician of note and assists her hus- band in his recitals, in addition to broadcasting her own programs. Little Jessie isn't quite big enough, yet, but it's a safe bet that she will make her own mark in the world of music within the next few years.

Here is an excellent photograph of TED HusING,Columbia's peerless sports announcer. The best thing about Husing is that he is not only a good announcer, but he also knows sports, and when he speaks, he speaks with the voice of authority. Millions of fans in every line of sport listen in to Ted at every opportunity. Announcement has recently been made that Husing will continue his popular radio "Sportslants" in motion picture newsreels at the rate of two a week.

HARRIET LEE

Harriet Lee's rise to radio stardom closely parallels the development of radio broadcast- ing, although she is probably best known for her appearances over the Columbia net- work with the CeCo Couriers, Paramount on Parade, the Majestic Theatre of the Air, the Henry -George programs, and the Weed Tire Chain period.

Her first big successes came while she was broadcasting from Chicago stations. She was a staff artist at WLS where she was the "May" of a singing team known as' "May and June" and also the "May" of "The Pied Piper and May". From WLS she went to KYW, where she was known as "The Melody Maid" and "Marion West, the Skelly Smile Girl." It was while she was appearing on the Skelly Oil Program that Wendall Hall heard Harriet. He brought her to New York for a two weeks engagement on the Majestic program. This was extended to five weeks, and then she placed her signature to a Columbia contract, where she has lived happily ever after.

Last summer Harriet appeared in the Paramount Theatres in New York City and Brooklyn with Paul Ash and his band. While she enjoys stage work, she prefers broad- casting and intends to stick to it.

There is one radio fan who has heard nearly every one of Harriet's broadcasts in the nearly six years she has been singing over the air. This fan writes to Harriet after each broadcast and tells her how it sounded. The fan is Harriet's sister, Mrs. J. A. Tid- marsh, of Hollywood, Calif. The sisters have not met for years, but radio keeps them close together.

The Prince of Putt, and the Playboy of Paris

The one and only BOBBY JONES was far more nervous when he faced the microphone preliminary to his first broadcast over the National Broadcasting Company's network recent- ly than he ever was when he was winning matches on the greens. Bobby broadcasts each week and presents some anecdote of his long and triumphant career as America's leading golfer. With him in the picture are BILL MUNDAY (left), the famous sports announcer who dubbed the huddle system in football the "crap shooting formation", and O. B. KEELER, prominent sports writer. This photo was taken in the studios of Station WSB, Atlanta, Ga., which is the National Broadcasting Company's representative in Bobby's old home town. Mr. Jones does seem to be just a little bit frightened as "zero hour" approaches, doesn't he?

Hearts are fluttering among the feminine contingent of dial twisters these days with the incomparable MAURICE broad- casting each week from the National Broadcasting Com- pany's wide -spread stations. It is claimed that Chevalier is being paid the highest salary ever given a radio enter- tainer, but the ladies claim he's worth it. It is unofficially reported that he receives four thousand big round American dollars for each broadcast, which must mean something or other. With Mr. Chevalier are Joint U. REBER, vice presi- dent of the J. Walter Thompson Advertising Agency (left), and GEORGE F. MCCLELLAND, vice president of the National Broadcasting Company. Oh yes, tune in on Sunday night at eight thirty E. S. T. That's the time.

HERE'S WHY THE GOOD THINGS SO OFTEN COME IN PAIRS

BRAD BROWNE (left) and AL LLEWELYN (right) have a brand of nonsense that is all their own and their many appearances on the air are in response to an

insistent demand from the army of "dial twisters". Their familiar characterizations of the "Senator and the Major" are only part of

their activities. They are also the "Pertussin Playboys" and form the comedy team featured in the Premier Salad Dressing pro-

grams.

"Gotcha, now, by cracky!" And from David's ex- pression, he is surely "got". "Uncle Abe and

David", the two down east characters who bring their trials and tribulations before the

National Broadcasting Company micro- phone each day, are played by PHILLIPS

LORD as "Uncle Abe" (left) and ARTHUR ALLEN as "David" (right). Lord is

the author of the skits, while Allen is a well known rural character

actor.

"Jolly Bill and sane," have more playmates than any other two people in the world, and thou- sands of children throughout the entire country claim them as their own. The real reason for their immense popularity is the fact that they are just two natural people who are the same before the microphone as they are in every day life. "Bill" is BILL STEINKE and "Jane" is twelve -year -old JANE HARBITER, and their pro- grams are built spontaneously while they broadcast.

Here are the precocious eleven -year -old "Rollo" and his well-meaning "Daddy", principals in the new La Palina programs over the Columbia system. The skits are written by J. P. McEvoy, playwright and newspaper humorist. "Rollo" is DONALD HUGHES and "Daddy" is NICK DAWSON, and their efforts to reach the ideal "father and son" of mutual understanding basis provide unusual real life comedy.

Melody Masters and Prominent Stage Folk On The Air

Here is a group of Columbia's "toe ticklers", dance orchestra leaders whose melodies are known wherever radio is heard. Reading from left to right they are: WILL OSBORNE, famous for his crooning; PAUL TRE - MAINE, who specializes in spirituals and novelties; FREDDIE RICH, one of radio's most prolific conductors; who is best known for his orchestrations; JutEs ALBERT:, popular society entertainer; HUSTON RAY,

who can play two pianos simultaneously; and BEN POLLACK, of Broadway fame.

PHIL BAKER, the man who makes an accor- dian laugh, cry, sing, and talk, has long been a star of Broadway musical productions, and when he appeared on the air last fall in a series of programs over CBS, he duplicated his previous successes. Baker is not only a master on the accordian, but his sparkling wit is well known to theatre goers. He has starred in "Artists and Models", "Pleasure Bound", "Greenwich Village Follies", and many other leading productions.

ALICE BOULDEN has appeared on numerous radio programs as a guest artist and is another example of a musical comedy star who has captivated radio audiences. Miss Boulden will be remembered as the leading lady in "Fine and Dandy", playing with Joe Cook, among other music shows. Incidentally, the radio fan grows more and more impatient for television broadcasts when such attractive performers appear on the air.

When OWEN DAVIS spoke during the Radio Homemakers Club period over CBS recently, the club members heard one of America's most prolific authors. Mr. Davis has pro- duced more than three hundred plays during the course of his long and successful career. Included among these is "Icebound", winner of the Pulitzer Prize and an outstanding Broadway success. Probably no other liter- ary figure has become so much a part of the American theatre or achieved such contin- uous success.

CLAUDETTE COLBERT'S Voice would not be strange to us even if she had never appeared before the microphone. Her many starring roles in the films have made her a familiar personage, and one whose popularity increases each day. Miss Colbert is one of the newer stars who have achieved prominence since the advent of the "talkies", and in adding her successful radio appearances to her list of achievements, gives further evidence of her versatility.

Some Views OF NBC's New Chicago Home

These views of the National Broadcasting Company's new Chicago studios give an admirable picture of "where the program comes from." The studio at the left is declared to be the world's largest radio studio. Its size can be gauged by the page boys stand- ing at attention. "Sunlight lamps" light the studio, and the performers can get a coat of tan while they broadcast. Another large studio is "STUDIO B" (upper left below) which is decorated in the spirit of modern "Jazz", and from it are broadcast many famous dance pro- grams, as well as other features. "Studio E" (upper right) is one of the most beautiful and is decorated in gold and blue. "STUDIO F" (lower left) is modelled after the library of an English country home. It is used for guest speakers, etc., and the familiar and home -like sur- roundings do much to prevent "microphone fright" among inexperienced broadcasters. "STUDIO D" (lower right) is another commodious scene of many popular broadcasts. Note the adjustable acoustical panels at the rear. These panels are manipulated to secure correct tonal effects.

Pianist, Soloist, Quartette and "Cut-Upli

VIRGINIA ARNOLD is known as Columbia's pianist "unexpect- uoso". She is a staff artist and is always ready to step in and fill the breach when anything unexpected happens during the course of a broadcast, and carefully laid plans go wrong. Aside from being pro- gram "handy man", Virginia is a featured performer herself and is often heard over the CBS network.

The smiling gentlemen in the center form the personnel of that ever popular group of vocalists known to radiodom as the "A. & P. Gypsies", together with their accompanist. Reading from the well known left to right, they are as

follows: EMILE COTE, bass; STANLEY MCCLELLAND, baritone; FRANK PAR-

KER, tenor; IRVING WEILL, accompanist; and CARLTON BOXILL, tenor. The Gypsies are heard over the NBC network every Monday night.

As you guess, the young man so busily en gaged with the scissors is none other than ANTHONY WoNs, who broadcasts "Tony's Scrap Book" each day. From the looks of the stack of books in the background and all the material waiting to be assembled, Tony will have little trouble in continuing his en- joyable programs. And for the benefit of all prohibitionists, the glass container in the fore- ground contains paste and only paste.

JESSICA DRAGONETrE

Only a few years ago JEssIcA DRAGONETTE made her bow to the radio audience, an audience that has since expressed its approval of her by making her one of its highest paid and brightest stars. Miss Dragonette came to New York from Georgian Court Convent, Lakewood, N. J., where she had spent her youth and where she had received her musical training. She was just another young soprano then, looking for a stage and an audience. Max Rein- hardt, the famous German director, was in New York preparing his American produc- tion of "The Miracle." He was looking for a young soprano voice to sing the only solo part. Miss Dragonette was one of a hundred young women who had auditions. But she was the one selected. After "The Miracle" Miss Dragonette had no difficulty in obtaining a place in the Broadway cast of "The Student Prince." And she sang Kathie, the prima donna part. In the 1926 Grand Street Follies she was soprano ingenue. Then came the radio offer that lured her away from the stage. Miss Dragonette was born in Calcutta, India. Until she was six she traveled with her parents, visiting the remote corners of the earth. When she was six she became a stu- dent at the Georgian Court Convent. All of Miss Dragonette's radio work has been for the microphones of the National Broadcasting Company. She is at present under exclusive contract for the Cities Ser- vice broadcasts.

Amos 'n' Andy And Some Facts About The Kings of Comedy

Here they are, and no introductions are needed. Amos 'N' ANDY have become an institution throughout the United States and foreign climes, including the Scandinavian, and, whether it is some new "propolition" or the latest amorous intrigues of Andy, radio listeners turn their dials to this tremendously popular pair each night for fifteen minutes of mirth provoking enjoyment.

A little more than five years ago CHARLES CORRELL and FREEMAN GosDEN were song and patter entertainers over a single station, WGN, Chicago. Then the great idea was born and "Correll and Gosden" initiated their negro impersona- tions as "Sam 'n' Henry". Their success was instantaneous and so the two set out to conquer new worlds.

They went to Station WMAQ, where they adopted the names "Amos 'n' Andy". In August, 1929, they signed a contract to appear before the National Broadcast- ing Company microphones and not long ago it was announced that "Amos 'n' Andy" had signed a new five year contract to continue with the Pepsodent pro- gram at salaries that are said to make them the highest paid individual perfor- mers on the air.

Gosden, the "Amos" of the famous team was born a little more than thirty years ago in Rich- mond, Virginia. Con- sidering his birthplace and his early environ- ment, it is easy to com- prehend his familiarity with the negro tongue and negro psychology. Correll, however, w a s born in Peoria, Illinois, and, although he has spent some time in the

south, much of his negro dialect had to be acquired.

Both received their start in amateur theatricals, and they first met when both were working for the same company in Chicago. They became room mates- and that's how it all started.

In preparing their episodes, Correll and Gosden, do all the work. At any time during the day or night, when not in the studio broadcasting or making personal appearances in some theatre, they may be found pounding away on a dilapidated typewriter. Every line of script is prepared by them and they also take all the parts themselves, even when the lines call for speeches by four or five characters. Which reminds us-we have to stop writing this description. It's time to tune in on Amos 'n' Andy.

You Tune in on These Artists Regularly

GITLA ERSTINN (upper left) has achieved immense popularity and wide audiences as featured soprano on the Chase and San- born Choral Orchestra programs over NBC network. Her artistry has made her one of Radio's brightest stars.

To those of us who look upon NBC's Sun- day broadcast of "Neapolitan Days" as a source of never ending musical enjoy- ment, DOLORES CASSINELLI iS a familiar personality. She is the charming soprano. (lower left.)

If you ask almost any youngster who Boa EMERY (upper center) is, he may not know. But if you mention "Big Brother"- you've started something. Bob Emery is the originator of the odent "Big Brother" Club over NBC.

"Go, and never darken my door again!" Step right up, every- body, and behold HANK SIMMONS and his SHow BOAT troupe. The one and only group of thespians who are the chosen favor- ites of ALL the crowned heads of Yurrup. Right this way, and don't push. There is room for all.

And just above, ladies and gentlemen, we have JOSEPH KOESTNER with his famous smile. One of Radio's busiest men, you hear him and his band during the Williams Oilomatic program, the Great Northern program and the Armour Hour.

Radio has been "just another world" to conquer for MARY CHARLES, for she is a familiar figure on both legitimate and musical comedy stages. We know her best from her weekly appearances in the La Palina Smoke Dreams broadcasts.

The Two Famous Newscasters

Here are Radio's most famous newscasters, Floyd Gibbons, the Libbey-Owens-Ford "Headline Hunter" and Lowell Thomas, the Radio Voice of the Literary Digest. Both of these men draw on a background of hair-raising adventure to add color to their unusual broadcasts.

Gibbons began his adventures as a war corres- pondent in Mexico in 1914, where he remained during many revolutions and counter revolutions, later covering the depradations of Francesco Villa. It was here he first met General Pershing when the American forces were pursuing Villa's band.

Gibbons was reported lost when the S. S. Laconia was torpedoed just before the United States en- tered the World War, but was picked up in a life boat with other survivors. He remained all through the Big Scrap and was wounded at Chateau Thierry, where he lost the sight of his left eye. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, and received the croix de guerre and the Italian war cross. Subsequent years found him wherever there was a war, from the Balkans to Timbuctu. Gibbons is the author of two books, in addition to his newspaper work.

Lowell Thomas is an explorer of note and a world traveler who has served as editor, special writer, and war correspondent of more than twenty metropolitan newspapers. During his travels and journalistic career he has met and interview- ed many of the most prominent men of our time, and is intimate with many of them. When he comments on some interesting personality in the day's news, he is often speaking of a personal ac- quaintance. Thomas has also written seventeen books, five of which have been "best sellers."

In selecting and assembling material for his broadcasts, Thomas employs to the fullest extent his background of exciting adventure with the result that his broadcasts are always packed with human interest and include the pick of the im- portant, the significant, and the humorous actu- alities of the day.

These Men Are Responsible For Some

Of Radios Most Entertaining Programs

DR. FRANK H. VIZETELLY, who heads this page, is known as the man with the vocabulary of 455,000 words. His interesting discussions of words and

their uses are some of the most instructive programs broadcast, as well as being unusually entertaining. Dr. Vizetelly is editor of Funk and

Wagnall's New Standard Dictionary, but, even with his vocabulary, it's a safe bet he wouldn't be able to argue with a traffic cop any

better than the rest of us poor mortals.

"The Clowning Conductor" is the name that has been given NAT BRUSII.OFF, who directs the musical portion of the La Patina Smoker program. Brusiloff, who dispenses novelty music with the aid of his orchestra and his own violin, is frequently drafted into the realm of the spoken word, when he acts as "straight man" for Henry Burbig's comedy dialect. In addition to the La Patina programs, Brusiloff provides a varied assort- ment of musical features over the Columbia network, and his unique orchestrations lend his programs constant variety and originality.

And here is ERNEST NAFTZGER, who seems to know what pleases most of the people most of the time and proceeds to give it to them via the radio waves. "Something for Everyone" is the title of the unusual and varied programs that he creates. A little music, a few jokes, a news flash or two, and a bit of poetry-he takes them all, stirs them together, seasons with a goodly dash of personality and prestot- "Something far Everyone". Heard each day, Naftzger's interesting programs con- tinue to be favorites among the daytime features.

The new feature "Sweethearts on the Air" intro- duced by Columbia will give radio listeners addi-

tional opportunity to hear DAVID Ross, known as "Columbia's Poet Announcer". Mr. Ross

has achieved prominence in his romantic recitals in conjunction with "Arabesque",

"Old Curiosity Shop", "Coral Islan- ders", and "Poets' Gold". Unique

among announcers, his lyric con- tinuities bring David Ross

steadily increasing favor.

Tuvo Pcpular Programs of Importance

Pictured in their Russian dress, are four prominent members of the cast

of "Around the Samovar", picturesque program of Russian music broad- cast over the Colurrbia network.

"Around the Samovar" is an old favorite among radio audiences and its

theme picturing a group of Russian musicians and dancers participating in an informal gathering has captured the imagination of countless thou-

sands of listeners in. Folk songs and folk dances are heard during the

course of the program played and sung as is possible only by native Rus-

sians. VALIA VALENTINOVA, contralto, is seated opposite ELIENA KAZANOVA,

violinist. Between them is a samovar, a metal vessel used for heating water for tea in Russia. And so, in prosaic English, "Around the Sarno- '

var" could be called "Tea Time", but who would want that!

Standing at the left is ELI SPIVAK, baritone, and to his left is PETER BILjO,

director of the program. Mr. Biljo also directs the balalaika orchestra that provides the instrumental portions of the programs. Mr. Biljo is a

musician of note and a master of the balalaika, a three stringed instru- ment somewhat similar to a guitar.

Each broadcast of "Around the Samovar" presents some new and novel

phase of Russian music or some charming folk song that introduces the

listener to new musical enjoyment. The programs are carefully prepared and rehearsed before going on the air, although they give one an impres-

sion of gay spontaneity.

Below is the entire cast of "The Empire Builders", the headlining pro- gram emanating from the Chicago NBC studios. The orchestra is under the direction of JOSEPH KOESTNER, while the group standing comprises the cast and technical staff engaged in presenting this unusual program.

To the right is a picture of HARVEY HAYS, who plays the part of "The Old Timer" in "The Empire Builders" presentations. Hays has created a very definite character in his "Old Timer", and his work in sustaining and rounding out his characterization marks him as an outstanding radio actor. Hays came to Radio from the stage where he had long been a familiar figure. The success with which he undertook "invisible acting" is evi- denced by the continuous popularity of his work as "The Old Timer."
