FM ROCKRADIOBY MIKE HARRISON

This week, six of the 30 TopLP's are R&B-type albums and atleast seven more contain R&Broots in Pop and Progressivepackages.

The process has been slow butsure. Black music has become akey thread in the fabric ofmainstream FM Progressive andstereo rock music.

Michael Milrod, the newlyappointed National PopPromotion Coordinator for AllPlatinum Records, which hasbeen a bastion for Black music forthe past eight years, is somewhatof a pop -crossover himself. He isthe only one in the record end ofthe Englewood -based companythat sports such acts as TheMoments, Sylvia, and Shirley &Company.

Only focusing on Pop, Top 40,and Progressive stations, Milrodhas long been an outspokenadvocate of the mixing of culturalsounds in commercial music for amass audience. "It's only theindustry that has drawn anauditory color line -- not theconsumer." I personallyremember Milrod as beingintrumental in getting Al Greenplayed on New York Progressiveswhile he was with London.

According to Milrod, there is awhole popular genre of musictoday which he describes as"sensual rock." Under thatheading, the nine -minute versionof "Sexy Mama" by TheMoments, "You're No Good" byLinda Ronstadt, and "The Best ofMy Love" by the Eagles havemore in common than mostpeople realize. "The trouble withsome Progressives today is thatthey still play the R&B in sets --then when they get complaintsthat they play too much Blackmusic they blame it on the music.Try mixing them up and see whathappens!"

Even Black radio is using thattechnique in reverse to boostratings and stimulate dimension." 'Bennie & The Jets' and ' I ShotThe Sheriff' were R&B reversecross -over smashes. Researchshows that in many categoriesWBLS a N.Y. Black ProgressiveFM has a majority of Whitelisteners."

Milrod goes on to say, "Manyradio people think that R&Bmusic consists of only things likeKool & The Gang or JamesBrown. That's hard-core R&B.But there are such artists asWillie Hutch who wrote"California My Way" or Tavares& Lou Rawls recording 'She'sGone'."

"I have to give credit to DennisElsis and the staff at WNEW-FMwho've opened their eyes to thefact that groups such as Earth,Wind &Fire exist. Other stationswhich have led the way includeWRNW, WL1R, KSAN, WBCNand KPRI."

The phenomenal success of TheAverage White Band should tellyou something and WPIX is stillvery successful with their Disco

This page is intended toaid you effectively insearching out andidentifying those recordsthat have great audienceappeal. The discothequesare a testing ground; thereaction on the dance floortells the truth, for a "hot"record sends audiencesdancing to the stores.

One city, one disco-d.j., orone record store cannotsufficiently provide you witha clear picture. We hope toprovide the fullest discocoverage here in R&R.

Our charts are based oncompiled play -lists, onaudience response fromdozens of clubs within eachregion. These charts are aconcensus, not singularopinions. You will be able togauge both trends andmovement. The chartlengths vary because therelative strengths of recordsin any one region vary. There aren't always 15, forwe are charting thoserecords that are very strongin their region, reflectingthe tastes of that area.

The disco-d.j. is anentertainer involved withtoday's people, his audiencestands in front of himwaiting to be caught up andmoved. This is a demandingaudience with finickyappetites and fast movingtastes who demand a skilledand deft hand on theturntable.

We would like to expressour sincere appreciation tothose who have helped andencouraged us in ourendeavors. Our continuingtask remains: aiding andabetting the proliferation ofgood dance music.

by Candy TuskenFormer RCA Vice -President -Promotion, Tom Cossie, has formed a

new record label and two publishing firms, Riverrecords, Main StreetMusic and Golden Eye Music all to be located in Pittsburgh, Pa. Tom'snew partner in the venture is Dave Shaffer, principal of Fox Studios inPittsburgh. Shaffer is an accomplished engineer and producer withtwelve years experience and is currently producing Diamond Reo. A fullline record company is the eventual aim with Riverrrecords currentlysigning, producing and securing label distribution tor several artistsand groups. The firm has sixteen track facilities in Fox and will becutting and selling masters to various labels. The new Diamond Reoalbum is now being recorded and will also be produced by the Cossie-Shaffer team to be released on RCA records entitled "Sweetpete."While Tom was at RCA in 1974, that label had more singles and albumson the national charts than ifs ever enjoyed in its history... It looks likethe new guitarist for the Rolling Stones will be Ron Wood. The group stillhas not made the official announcement, but sources close to the Stonessay Wood is their choice...

SNUFF'S NEW PROTEGESnuff Garrett's new find is Brenda Patterson who just finished

recording an album under his direction on DiscReet Records titled"Like Good Wine." Brenda stopped by the R&Roffices last week to chatabout her up and coming tour and new single called "Mr. Guitar." Thesong is ioff the LP and1was originally slated for Cher before her splitfrom Snuff. Brenda began singing at age seven in her hometown churchin Arkansas. She's toured extensively with Ike & Tina Turner, Dr. John,Mike Bloomfield, etc. and provided the lovely back up vocals on BobDylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door." DiscReet's Harold Berkmanheard Brenda's tapes and took them to Snuff whodecided to produce herhimself. Said Brenda "I was awed and a little scared to work with Snuff, but he's a wonderful man... very funny and fun to work with. He worksso fast that it rather takes your breath away. He's totally professionaland made me feel very comfortable." Both Warner Records andDiscReet are planning a dual promotional attack for Brenda to include anational tour of club dates, station visits and TV appearances on TheSmothers Brother's Show, In Concert and The Midnight Special. JayLasker, who left asA BC Record's President last week, is rumored to bestarting his own company in conjunction with associates located in NewOrleans. The discussions include a label -booking -management firmwith Lasker as head...

IRON BUTTERFLY BACK!As you can see by the picture, the entire of Iron Butterfly plus their

management paid R&R a visit to talk about the reformation of one of themost popular groups of the late sixties. Butterfly has retained two of theoriginal members with Erik Braunn (guitar -vocals) and Ron Bushy(drummer -vocals) plus has added two new faces with Phil Kramer(bass -vocals) and Howard Reitzes (keyboards -vocals.) MCA hasreleased their first album this week entitled "Scorching Beauty" with asingle in the offing, but, as yet, un-named. The group gained fame backin 1967 and was awarded the first platinum album ever given for theirlegendary "In a Gadda Da Visa." Before their breakup four years ago,the group had released six albums and sold approximately seven millioncopies. Said Erik "Ron and I got together last March through a mutualfriend for a project that eventually fell through. I ran into Len Sachs inthe hallway of the studio one day (who has since become Butterfly's newmanager) and we decided .to put the group back together with some ofthe ideas that Ron and I had been working on. Phil and Howard had beenjamming with us so they were natural to round out the group." Theyhave been rehearsing, writing, recording and touring since March with afull blown national tour slated to start In the East next month. They willkick off the tour with a one night only stand, two shows, at The Whiskeyin Los Angeles where the group first attained their fame seven yearsago. The group will start the tour in Toronto then onto New York,Washington, D.C., the Southern states and then work their back Westwith the cities to be named at a later date. The group is not nervousabout starting again as they just recently appeared in the college townof Bozeman, Montana and the crowd went crazy. The college has sinceasked them to come back. And it is nice to have Iron Butterfly back!...

HEROES ARE NOT HARD TO FINDArthur Lee and Love's manager, Bruce Reilly, were sound asleep last

week when he heard the sound of breaking glass. He got up and lookingacross the street, he saw his neighbor's house pouring out smoke. Hegrabbed his bathrobe and ran over to find a helpless, elderly coupleunable to get out of the house. The man has a heart condition and hiswife is a parapalegic. He carried them outside to safety and renderedartificial respiration to both due to smoke inhalation. And if all thatwasn't enough heroics for one night, Bruce then picked up the gardenhose and put the fire out! Needless to say the Los Angeles FireDepartment is awarding our hero a citation ... Bob Welch has splitFleetwood Mac joining up with his producer -engineer Jimmie Robbinstor a possible soloor duo act. Bobhas been the lead guitarist for the groupfor the past three years and wrote several of their hit songs... Mary

A BEATLE IN WATERGATEEarthnews was telling me that John Lennon has been granted the

right to personally cross-examine government witnesses in hisdeportation case as handed down by Judge Owen. Some potentialwitnesses that John can call upon include former Attorney General JohnMitchell and Richard Kleindienst who have just recently been foundguilty and convicted of felonies regarding Watergate. Lennon is basinghis case on the premise that immigration officials unconstitutionallypre -judged his case. Lennon has been fighting extradition due to amarijuana bust in the late sixties. WNEW-FM in New York is devoting athree hour special to feature Led Zeppelin to be aired February 4th...Arif Mardin is producing the new Bee Gees album and look for newalbums by Roberta Flack and Eric Clapton (recorded in Jamaica) to beavailable in early March ... ABC SHAKEUP IMMINENT?The rumors are that ABC Records is due for a thorough house-

cleaning with the appointment of the new Chairman of the Board, JerryRubinstein. Apparently the label is overstaffed in many departmentsand in some cases duplicate staffs are said to exist. Much of this couldbe due to the acquisition of the Famous Family by ABC and a totalreorganization and cutback is expected shortly... The legendary GingerBaker, who is considered to be one of the most celebrated Britishdrummers in rock history, has formed a new band with The GurvitzBrothers to record on Chess -Janus Records. An album is being rush -released and according to Baker "I think the LP is the best thing I'veever done."... Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen havesigned with Warner Brother Records with an album release to be outnext month... Cher's new TV series debut promises to be a blockbusterof talent. RADIOR&R: As a consultant, where do

you go to find first theprogrammers, and secondly, thetalent? Where are they today?

ROOK: Well, luckily, there aregood things and bad things aboutbeing in the business for a period oftime. A known name for example. However, I never say to myself thatI have a "known" name. I neverbelieve all that bullshit, if there issuch a thing. When you're known thepeople like the Bill Tanners, the BobBarentz come to you.

R&R: What do you look for? Let'stake a program director. What doyou look for when you go to hire aPD? What do you want out of a

program director for 1975?ROOK: Well, I don't think you find

exactly what you're looking for. I

think that a program director is likea talent. I never have found talentexactly the way I want it. I think youhave to work with it. I think thereare very tell -tale signs that comeabout in vocabulary in discussionswith people. I watch for words thatthey use. For example, if I hearsomeone constantly has a "mystaff," "my station," "my people,""my...." that turns me offpersonally because I don't frankly, believe in that. I don't believeanyone belongs to me. I don't believein that. I don't believe in "me"owning people. I don't believe in the"I" isms. I do this. I do that, That'sbullshit. Only an ego would have toreach out and bang the drum loudenough to tell everyone about that. Itdoesn't make sense to me.

I think that when people use thestatement "my station is power" --well power is a very negative term. Ithink that people who use the phrase"I am the boss" are foolingthemselves. We have been reared allour lives of hearing the word "boss"being negative. When we camehome from school our Fathers andMothers told us "the boss was abastard today." So I don't ever wantto be boss. I think that programdirectors have to be tremendouslyaware of another person's feelings. They must always be aware thatthey don't necessarily always haveto have all the ideas. They don'talways have to have all the answers. But, above all, they must be willingto listen, and do a lot of listening to alot of different people. And theymust be willing to change. We'reliving in "future shock" ... there's nodoubt about it.

My God Almighty, I'm thirty eightyears of age. I feel like I'm twenty-five and I think a lot of that comesbecause of my family. I'm young.I'm amazed. Forty? I just can'tbelieve it. Forty to me is over thehill. Well, I don't feel that at all. I

don't relate to that at all. In the lastsix years or so, I have gotten to thepoint that I don't run around with thepeople in our business. I go deep seafishing. There isn't a soul in thatboat who has any idea who I am,what I do, or anything. It wouldn'tmake any difference to them. I don'tgo into Hollywood. I don't getinvolved with that. I'm just not in theleast bit interested in that. And I'mnot interested in people who are. I'mnot a groupie. I think that'sridiculous. I think Elton John is agreat talent. Right, but I sure as helldon't think he's a saviour or a God. Idon't believe in mystiques. I don'tbelieve in messiahs and all that. Itdoesn't make sense to me. I'm notabout to put anyone on that plane. And I don't believe programdirectors should put themselves onthat plane.

I am constantly amazed at all thepeople in the business that you talkto that have never had anything butsuccess. They have never atanytime ever had a bad book. Well, I

John Rook in 1957, disc jockey and program director of KASL/New Castle, Wyoming. It was his first radio job.

At WLS in 1970 with George Wilson (right). "George was the program director of KTLN-Denver who hired me in 1960. It was George who"put me up" in a basement room of his home, gave me a few dollars to live on til pay day and gave me my first "all night" shift at KTLN.Since then I have always given credit to George for starting my broadcast career. At the time (1960) George was known as George Cromwelland the man I was hired to replace was Dave Moorhead who had transferred to KTLN's sister station KRIZ in Phoenix."

haven't been that lucky. I've somethat I didn't understand. There havebeen many things that I didn't knowwhy it had happened. There havebeen talents who I thought weregreat, who apparently weren't.There have been program directorswho I thought were good, thatweren't. There were programdirectors that I thought perhapswere lacking, that turned into greatones. In answer to your question, I

don't know where you find goodprogram directors. Over the lastfive or six years, I have neverscreened calls. I believe thatanyone who wants to talk to meshould be able to talk to me. But, I

reserve the right to be honest. I

reserve the right to say I have fortyseconds, that's all I've got. I've gotfour lines waiting, can I help you? I

don't want a secretary screeningcalls. I'm available to anyone whocalls. I think that helps a lot in thefinal conclusion.

R&R: What does a programdirector for you do?

ROOK: None of them work fOr me.I think that's a fallacy. First of all I

don't even like the word consultant. It's a negative term to me. Manypeople who have never hadexperiences enough to beconsultants, never experiencedsuccesses enough to call themselvesconsultants. Just recently ... therewas a program director and generalmanager of a radio station that hadbeen in the red, and never has madeit to the black, never has been toprated in the market and are sayingthat they are consultants. And I

always wonder what they are goingto consult. Are they going to go outand tell someone how to go in thered, and how to keep their stationsfrom being number one? I don'tbelieve in the word consultant onlybecause I think it's been downplayedvery badly. I think it's a term that isused by people who are unemployedso I don't like that term. And no oneever works for me, even if I ownedthe station. I think people worktogether very well. I don't believe inanyone working "for" someone else.I don't work for anyone. I refuse to. I

never have and I never will work

"for" anyone. I will work withsomeone always. I never had a"boss" in my mind. I've had peoplethat I've respected very much that Ilearned a great deal from -- that I

like personally, that I thought wereright in what they were doing, noteverything, but many things.

So far as people who are programdirectors in the stations that I aminvolved in, they are programdirectors. I just love working withtalented people. I get a tremendouskick out of planting seeds andwatching them grow and talking totalent. Well I've had fifteen toeighteen years of experience indoing it so obviously I amexperienced enough that I can reallydo a job in motivating and turning ontalent. It's not fair to that poorprogram director, when I walk intothat station to try and take over hisradio station. I don't do it, I won't doit.

R&R: Do you supply anyguidance, like music rotationsystems?

ROOK: Oh, constantly.Everything that I talk about to aprogram director over the phone oranytime, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, I always say toeveryone: "Remember this is mypersonal feelings why we should dothis, why we should do that." And Itry to give them the basis as to why Ithink of it or the basis as to why I

came with that solution. If there issome information I don't have, theyare encouraged, for God's sake, totell me about it. Because myinformation isn't gospel law. Maybe

I don't have all the facts.R&R: Do they have to clear things

with you? For example, if they wantto hire a jock, do they have to clear itwith you and have you hear thetape?

ROOK: I think that's a good thing.I don't think there is a programdirector that I work with anywherethat does not want me to hear a tape. It's a nice feeling to know that theywant me to listen to the tape. It's anhonesty relationship. If they havefound a guy that Is good and are nothiring him just because he's a friendof theirs, those type of PD's I'm not

interested in anyway, they reallywant my opinion. It's moreinformation. You can make betterdecisions when you have moreinformation. So if I am trying to betotally void of any personalvindictiveness or traits ornegativeness or whatever the hell inanything I do, hopefully, what I

came out with, and add to that tape, might be aware of something thatthe program director didn't hear orwasn't aware of. No, I don't insistthat I have to O.K. anybody. That'slike saying "only I know how to doit." I wouldn't be interested inhaving people around me that lookedat it in that fashion. We discussconstantly, and I use that wordbecause I don't believe in arguing aswhen something becomes anargument, then it Isn't worthcontinuing the discussion.

R&R: I notice that you don't runthe same contests everywhere.Every single radio station is anindividual radio station. Even whenyou were doing the Heftel stations, you did them separately except forthe cash calls, but the individualpromotions were different.

ROOK: Well, insofar as the Heftelthings are concerned, remembernow I was totally void. I was noteven used in Pittsburgh. I was in thestation once, in maybe five months.People were hired. Disc Jockieswere hired. Morning men werehired. All that was done by thecompany and I wasn't contacted on.They felt that the biggest problemthey had was Florida and, therefore,i should be totally involved inFlorida. And I wasn't about to arguebecause Florida in Dec -Jan -Feb -March is just sensational. Besidesthat, it was kind of challenging. It'snice to have seven or eight or ninecompetitors all going. I enjoyedthat. I enjoyed getting involved inFlorida. I enjoyed the people we puttogether. I'm very proud of thatstation.

R&R: Let's talk about that stationbecause I want to get into one areathat you know well. That's thebusiness end of the radio station;understanding the sales. Y100 as

well as 13Q had been accused underthe Buzz Bennett regime of spendinga lot of money and almost making itimpossible in one year or even twoyears to make it back. And yet youcame into Y100 and still continued tospend money to become numberone. How did it' work outmathematically; how did it work outon the bottom line?

ROQK: There's no doubt in mymind that Buzz finds that veryannoying to be known as the guy whogives away all the money. Thatdoesn't say much for hisprogramming abilities.

R&R: I think there is much moreto Buzz Bennett's programmingthan just giving away money.

ROOK: Obviously, obviously. Hedidn't have money In a couple ofother places and did a good lob. Sofar as the money in Florida Is

concerned, it was a tremendous cutIn money compared to what hadbeen given away during the first sixmonths. I think that really just basicbusiness procedures, programmingprocedures, basic administrationalduties and things that were neededvery badly Is what we Instituted. And they're very Important forconsistency at a radio station. Theystill use the music rotation systemswe Installed. They still refuse to calltheir disc jockeys. I called them'entertainers' or talents. To hell withdisc jockeys. All of those things. I

still communicate regularly withthem and help them In any way I canbecause I like Cec. I've known himfor a long time and he's a Libra alsoand there is something about himthat just wipes me out. I love him. I

think he's sensational. He just can'tstand to be better than number one. I

don't care what it would be hecould have his last dollar in hispocket and he would borrow $50.00 togive it away or to promote his staffor pay a talent. He thinks air talentsare very Important at a radiostation, and I do too. What happenedto those stations, what happened inFlorida, was just consistency. Therewere records that were never playedat those stations that should havebeen played, so it wasn't all the

music. What basically happenedthere was that we just put a goodconsistent, well planned (and yet Itdidn't sound well planned) radiostation together. Basically it wasjust a good Top 40 radio station onFM.

R&R: Are your program directorsinvolved in budgets?

ROOK: Some are and some arenot. That's the reason you won'tnecessarily find the same contestson all stations.

R&R: Let's go further. When yougo in and take over a station, you'rehired to give advice to a chain. Doyou go in and take it from the bottom... from the public file and the budgetto the air sound? Do you look ateverything?

ROOK: Yes, definitely. We haveowners that ask us to hire managersand chief engineers for them, whichwe have. I think after a period oftime when you're in any form of thebusiness, you've got to be moreinvolved than In just picking recordsor putting a format together. Thereare many business procedures andthings that have to be done fromunion contracts on down.

I think the seven or eight years atABC prepared me tremendouslyfrom an administration standpoint, from a business proceduresstandpoint. There are any number ofthings from artwork, logos, yes eventhe actual logs for the radio stationsare prepared by John Rook andAssociates and sent to them. PublicService Programming -- every areaInvolved with that radio station fromthe hiring of a sales manager. Afterall, it's all radio - it's the total thing. If we happen to come acrosssomeone who can offer a good priceon something, I notify every owner"here's a good price on equipment, here's a good price on this, on that. Now is the time to make a groupbuy." So we're pretty heavilyinvolved in those areas. It'sImportant as a company or as aservice to realize that. I reallybelieve that I can manage any radiostation In the nation and manage itsuccessfully. I don't have any doubtof that. I think I have already done

management at a radio stationwithout the title of Manager.

I've seen radio stations that I havebeen involved In that were verysuccessful and when I left it, thosesame stations found thatunfortunately they may have takensome steps backwards. That kind ofleaves me on a downer because itmeans that I apparently didn'tprepare It to last. But then I can'tcontrol it. I don't own the station. I

don't own those people. There is noway that I can expect them to doonly what I want to do. I don't ownthem. They are not my decisions tomake. I'll be glad to give themadvice even If it's 100 percentagainst what they believe In or whatthey think. I reserve the right to dothat. But if I think a manager is ahorrible manager, I'll tell thePresident of the company honestlywhy and there is no way in the worldthat a president can't look at me andsay "you're absolutely correct"because it's honest, here are thefacts.

R&R: But it's also one man'sopinion.

ROOK: No, it's facts. I can provethose things. It isn't my opinion. It'sfacts that he put this contest on theair when he shouldn't have. It's factsthat he did this or that. It's facts thathe alienated the union. It's facts. I

didn't do it. I didn't dream It up. I

didn't go snooping around to find It.It was just there for me to see. I

don't look around for things to "getsomeone." That doesn't make anysense to me. I don't have any desiresto do that. If that's what I'msupposed to do, then I don't evenwant the job. I hope the people that Iwork with are all honest enough totell me exactly what they think, always having the right to disagreewith them and vice versa. It doesn'tmean that I'm wrong or they'rewrong. It means we disagree.

R&R: 1975, at least the first ha If, isgoing to be a very rough year forradio. I've heard that most nationalbuys in key markets, instead ofgoing ten deep or seven deep, they'vecut back to three deep. Localbusiness has got to be off. Where doyou see your radio stations, the onesyou're involved with, and how do yousee them making 1975 a profitableyear?

ROOK: In order to answer that, I

would have to give you my totaloutlook. Obviously the success of theradio stations depend upon manydifferent things - the economy, the

society (what mood society is in),etc. If you look back in history, yourealize that we go through the"pendulum swings" syndrome. Nowit seems tome that with the public oftoday the entertainment business asa whole is going to be very importantin the next couple of years. Historyshows us that when a crisis, especially a financial one, comesalong that the public will spend theirquarters on entertainment -- onbeing entertained.

R&R: The movie industry is hotternow than during World War II.

ROOK: The record business putout fewer records and made moremoney, right, and still are breakingartists. To me it meant that betterproduct was out. Obviously thebroadcasting business is anadvertising media. Now advertisingdefinitely takes a drop when fewerdollars are available. So there aregoing to have to be a tightening ofbelts in a few places, but that's trueof every area. It's true of the worldtoday.

R&R: Does that mean longershifts? Does it mean less newsmen?etc.

ROOK: I think, and I don't want tosound like I'm on a soapbox talkingabout the world problems, but whenyou realize, and It's fact, that rightnow millions of people are dying. They're dying because they'rehungry. And we sit here eating, havea wonderful home. Even if wewanted to share our food, wecouldn't get It to them in time to savethem. To me, I think of those thingswhen an ownersays to me " I'm goingto have to cut back, can we go tofive -hour shifts?" I say, you betterbelieve it. We sure as hell canbecause that's sure a long way fromstarving to death or a long way fromnot having a job.

I think that's true. We'll have tostart watching a little closer. Youand me, we watch closer in our ownpersonal planning, orobviously, you're going to have to be moreaware and do a little bit of belttightening and I don't think wrong ofpeople doing that. I do it in mypersonal planning, my own personalhousehold. And stations have to doit. I think they're doing it already. They've been doing it all year. Thesyndication busines, the automationbusiness is just a giant now. Why?Because It's one way to go, in thesetimes, when you have no othermoney to really compete with a fullstaff, you're going to have to go to

automation, in some shifts at least. It's possible. It isn't the ideal thing. When you have programmed a radiostation in Newcastle, Wyoming andmaybe billed 5160,000 and youprogram a radio station in Chicagothat billed six million a year, youcan easily remember what it waslike not having the money to do this, this and this. I've never forgottenthat. I live in a nice home now. I likemy home, but I remember when I

didn't have a nice home and, God, Ihope I never have to go through thatagain. I don't want to. But, I thinkthe same thing goes with a programdirector, a jock or myself. When anowner says to me "we have a

problem. We can no longer afford tooperate our all night show. What canwe do?"

R&R: What do you cut, though? Doyou cut the news, public affairs, jocks?

ROOK: It depends upon thestation. If you have a newsstaff offourteen and you can get by with ten, fine. I operate on the basis thatmoney has never been the primething ... it never has been. I havenever paid attention to money. I likeit. I like to be able to afford a living. I

like being able to have some nicethings. I like security. I think we alldo. But money hasn't been the thing.I have clients that I have continuedwith that didn't have enough moneyto pay me. I hada client call me ninemonths ago and said "John, we havea terrible problem. We're going tohave to go to cut two disc jockeys offthe staff. We just can't continue. We're going to have to go to six hourshifts." I said "cancel my fee." Andthey did. I took a lesser fee inanother case. It doesn't bother meto do that. If I didn't have enoughmoney to make a living myself, I

may not be able to do that so easily. It would kill me personally to knowthat a station was sounding like apiece of crap and here I am makingmoney off it. Only on a basis thatthey didn't have enough money topay talent. Well, I want them to beable to pay talent. I want talent paid.

I don't want there to be cuts. There are people, thank God,

that have been around me orworking with me for a long time andnever left -- we still work together tothis day and they call. Because, they know, Damn it, that when itcomes right down to it if there is asituation Involved where it's going toget to that -- cutting someone -- I'llprobably, drop my fee that month,

That doesn't bother me.R&R: Does a program director

sacrifice his promotion budget?ROOK: I don't think that he has to

in every area. I don't think thatthere should be black and white likethat. If the manager says "no morepromotion budget," then we 'regoing to cancel that.

R&R: Isn't it true that mostmanagers, even in your majormarkets, are, most of the time, salesoriented. To them, even though theratings are what they sell, it is veryhard for them to believe that givingaway 5500.00 or a trade out, something or other, is really going toget them what they need to get theirsales. It seems like the comments Iget from program directors, and itdidn't happen to me in my years ofradio. I was just lucky I guess, butthe promotion budget and theprogramming department arealways the first not to get the moneyor the first to lose it. When it comesto the sales staff cutting down ontheir expenses, that's after becausethat generates immediate revenue. If you take the guy out to lunch, youhave a better chance of getting inwith him. Get him a kick back, gethim a color TV whatever. But theprogramming side, whether it'sgetting a budget for a music researchperson or giving money away, whatever it takes, always seems tobe the first to suffer.

ROOK: I don't know if there is ablack and white answer to that. Forexample, for a program director tosay to a manager "I can't lose mymusic research person, thereforeyou can't take it away from me."It's entirely possible that there is atalent on the station that could doboth jobs. When I was a jock, I did afour hour shift (and just because I

did it doesn't mean that I thinkeveryone else should.) I threadedthe news machine, I put the teletypepaper in. I did all the public servicesin many cases. I did production. I

did the music. I did everything I

possibly could. I don't see anythingwrong with that.

R&R: When did the three hourshifts come in? What was theadvantage?

ROOK: I think that's nice to somedegree.

R&R: People don't listen in threehour blocks.

ROOK: Right. For years, I havestopped using times. I've said soand so Is the 'morning man.'Because the public doesn't

understand "tune in tomorrow andhear Joe Blow between six and nine,or six and ten. They don'tunderstand that. Why don't you justsay "Joe Blow, mornings." Nowthey'll understand it. Pete Smith, afternoons, Joe Brown, evenings, midday or evenings or all-night. I

think four hour shifts is a good move.I think it always has been. I thinkthat during the day of real highpitched, fast moving, I'm talkingabout the early sixties when echochamber radio was there and it wasjust fifteen different fast movingthings at all times, jingles andscreaming, Jesus Christ, no onecouldstand it for more than three hours! At that time, it was probably true, maybe three hour shifts were needed. But, I think four hours has alwaysbeen a good thing -- 6 to 10, 10 to 2, 2to 6 has always been a good bit. I

think it's a lie, and it doesn't soundconvincing for me to tell an all nightman you're not important so youhave to work midnight till six. Sixhours!? Since when is his shift nomore important than anyone else's?His shift could be just as importantto me as any other shift on thestation.

I don't believe in six hour shifts. I

know that there are stations that runthree hour jock shifts during theimportant time periods, whateverthey are. And yet they shit all overthe listener in other areas. It doesn'tmake any sense to me. It doesn'teven start to make sense to me.We're all going to have to tighten ourbelts in both business andpersonally. I'm like LyndonJohnson. I'm running around thehouse turning off lights and seeing ifthe TV needs to be on. I'm teachingmy family. I even turned off mylights on my circle driveway. I paidfor them -- they're all in, it's just toobad I can't use them! I'm telling myboys don't use the gas toomuch.Well, I'm doing it and I thinkthe same thing goes at a radiostation. There is nothing wrong for astaff at a radio station to realize thatthe station just might soon have towatch what it's doing for a dollarstandpoint. Maybe it's important.Americans are spoiled rotten. I loveit. I love life here. But it's a shamewe don't understand what'shappening. It used to be during acrisis, we used to all come through.I'm not sure the fibre of theAmerican public would know how todo that.

ED SALAMON, WEEP/PITTSBURGHEd Salamon became Program Director of 50,000 watt WEEP in

August, 1973 and since that time, the station has achieved a solid No. 2position with 25-49 adults (ARB A -M 74, TSA) in a very competitivemarket. Bringing the contemporary approach and a researchbackground acquired in various positions with Westinghouse Broad-casting Company, Ed utilizes a relatively short playlist and tight on -airproduction techniques to present Country music in an urban market.

A Pittsburgh native and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh,Salamon worked in public affairs as a congressional aide beforeentering broadcasting where he has held positions in promotion, marketing -research as well as programming.

WISZ, BALTIMORE recentlywon two awards from theBaltimore Organized CountryMusicians. (At top) BILLBARDEN, Program & MusicDirector accepts award forstation of the year. Below,JERRY GRAY accepts award asJock of the Year. GRAY ismidday jock on WISZ.

INSIDENASHVILLE1974 was the biggest year in

country music history. Dollar -wise, more money was grossed incountry music related productthan at anytime past. From 62country stations in 1960 to almost1200 this year. From a gross ofless than three million dollars in1939 to a gross of over a billion in1947; from the first country -popNo. record ("Chattanooga ShoeShine Boy" in 1950) to over adozen country -pop hits in 1974.From the step -child of the musicindustry to the 1930's (the recordcompanies placed all "hillbilly"players on subsidiary labels sothe public wouldn't know that thatparticular company wasassociated with such a primitivesound) to a clamor for the newbreed of country -pop hitmakerswho can win the world in 1975.Yes, country music has come totown! I might predict here at theoutset, that country music will beresponsible for the first bigrecession -breaking hit recordartist to happen in 1975.

Soon the world won't have fat tolaugh at, it seems. Kenny Pricelost about 75 pounds in 1974, fromover 300 to a respectable 235'ish;Mac Wiseman had an intestinalby-pass and dropped 125 pounds, down to 170'ish; now Dr. AndrewTrimble of Tucker, Georgia, istaking away much of the physicalpersonality of A.J. Samples, Jr.Dr. Trimble hospitalized Mr.Samples recently for treatment ofhis diabetic condition and of acholesterol level which the doctorsays was the highest he's everseen. Since he was firsthospitalized on December 16,

Junior Samples has gone from 318to 284 and the doctor expects (orhopes) that he will lose another 45pounds. Junior says that'snothing to "Hee Haw" about!

David Houston's new radioshow on the -Del Rio-AcunaMexican giant, XERF, is creatingsome uniquely satisfying andfrustrating problems. Since hestarted the nightly affair sometwo months ago, David and hismanager, Tillman Franks sayresponse is great. "Just like theold days when Paul Kallinger wason the air," says Tillman.

"The only problem is, they'redemanding more airtime for us,and we haven't got time, with ourroad schedule, to do more than anhour a night, at least not rightnow." That's funny! They'redoing pretty much what we heardon the Mexican stations 25 and 30years ago, and getting excitingresponse. Sounds like the cyclehas been completed and we'reback to what was hot with late -night airmen like Paul Kallinger,Fred Womble, Wayne Raney, andothers. I hope to do a special storyon the cause and effects of theearly all-night country music

rzwzgwvis

personalities on those unlimited -powered Mexican radio stations,XEG, XERB, XERF. They weresurely a factor in the Westernhemisphere's consciousness andpioneer acceptance of countrymusic and country records.Anybody with stories and -orinformation on the people, showsand memories of those days, please send them to me at ouroffice, 808 16th Ave. So., or callme collect at (615) 331-2296.

(Columbia) Some expected "The Last Picasso," but thiswill certainly do. Add KMBZ, WFIR, WGN, WBAL,KNBR.

PHOEBE SNOW "Poetry Man" (Shelter) One of themost added by a new artist in a long time. On K101,KIIS, WLW, WBAL, KULF, KVI. Plus the batch ofstations reported last week. Looks very solid.

ELVIS PRESLEY "My Boy" (RCA) Starting his 3rddecade as reigning King. Already good reaction inPhiladelphia from WIP. Also on WFIR.

DOOBIE BROTHERS "Black Water" (WB) On WROC,WCBM, WASH.

Other N&A: BILLY MAY "Front Page Rag" (MCA)WGN, WIP, KAKE. LETTERMEN "Eastward"(Capitol) WGN, KMBZ, WFIR, WBAL. OLIVIANEWTON -JOHN "Have You Never Been Mellow (MCA)Just out at deadline ... on K101. SAM NEELY "I FoughtThe Law" (A&M) The old Bobby Fuller hit ... on KMPC,KMEN for starters. PRELUDE "Fly" (Island) KNBR.

POPNOTESBY MIKE KASABO

Well the new year is off and running. Let's take a look atsome of the more interesting developments. Billy May, whosebig band sounds in the forties and fifties brought him nationalattention, just might be back on the scene in the seventies. Hisnew release "Front Page Rag" on MCA is already gettinggood airplay support from WGN, WIP and KAKE. It's verymuch in the vein of Marvin Hamlisch's "The Entertainer."

Elvis begins his third decade a reigning King with a cutpulled from the year old album "Good Times." The track "MyBoy" is being rushed by RCA as a single. Dean Tyler WIPreports "...very good phone response."

Columbia pulled off what amounts to some programmers asa surprise. A number of MD's and PD's expected "The Last

'Picasso" from Neil Diamond, and "Growin' " from Loggins &Messina. Instead, we have "I've Been This Way Before" byNeil and "Changes" from L&M. Doesn't seem to matter; bothare running fast their first week out.

Just getting out into the field is the new Olivia Newton -John"Have You Never Been Mellow." Initial feeling by thosewho've received it indicates four in a row for ONJ. No tellinghow far she'd go if she was attractive.

Some items not big nationally yet, but logging impressivephone reaction regionally, we find: "Lovin' You" MinnieRiperton good calls at K101, WIP; "Just Leave Me Alone" DonPotter phone action at WROC plus increase play at WIP; "01'55" which is the "B" side of the Eagles smash is loggingterrific response at KWAV-Monterey ... station also reportsgood reaction to America's flip "Mad Dog;" finally JimMahaney WTRX is finding great success with Al Wilson's"Won't Last A Day -Let Me Be The One" medley.

Jack Bennett WWDC broke about every existing rule inmodern programming last week when he put on "Heartaches"by Ted Weems. The record was a big hit in the mid -forties onthe Decca label, and musically has nothing in common withtoday's musical sound. But guess what? Jack is getting superstrong phone requests. Anyway, to finish the story, Bennettmaintains the record first broke nationally from play at WBT-Charlotte, N.C. in 1946.

An upcoming format change at a top ten market has placedtop members of that staff on gig alert. If anyone has need forqualified programming people, contact me for details.

Continued action: "She Doesn't Live Here Anymore" JackJones; "Rain" Kris & Rita; "Thanks For The Smiles" CharlieRoss; "In A Puff Of Smoke" Polly Brown. "When A Child IsBorn" Michael Holm ... dropped from the Pop -30 but stillactive in plenty of markets. Check graph section.

David Klahr WEE I -FM -Boston reports playing the flip ofAnne Murray's latest ... it's called "Lullaby."

The girls are at it again .. of the eight super hot records onthis week's Pop -30, five are by ladies. Also of nate, there is onlyone instrumental on the chart "Arabesque No. 1." And onlyone other showing promise "Hot Sause" by Jan Davis. Duringmost of 1974, instrumentals had a much better showing.

Enjoy your weekend with R&R.
