Beta Protection Products

The accepted standard for shielding beta

emissions of 32P, 35S, 3H and 14C is 10mm thick

optical acrylic which is an effective and ideal

material for the construction of beta radiation

protection equipment. Its properties provide easy

fabrication and manufacturability into a wide

range of products.

Gamma Protection Products

Now readily available is a lead containing clear

acrylic which offers complete visibility of stored

gamma emitting radioisotopes unlike the non

transparent solid lead shielding which until

recently has been used as protection against

isotopes such as 125I, 133Xe, 57Co, 99mTe, 123I and 67Ga.

This transparent shielding has a lead content of

30% which is introduced as an organo lead salt.

The Biocom range of products using 12mm thick

lead acrylic, 0.5mm thick lead equivalent,

attenuates gamma emissions from 125I and

isotopes of lesser energy. The 35mm thick lead

acrylic, 1.5mm thick lead equivalent, can be

purchased for use with more energetic isotopes

of Iodine.

Note: Gamma shielding does not protect

against beta emmissions and Beta shields do

not protect against gamma emmissions.

Blocking of both beta and gamma emmissions

can be accomplished using a DuoShield.

Users of radioisotopes will benefit from the comprehensive range of Biocom RadiationSafety Products which is made up of a large selection of shields, boxes, waste bins,trays and cabinet.

ShieldsDepending on the users requirements, the shields come in a variety of sizes, small or large, and styles, flat or

curved base. The flat base is 300mm x 300mm and offers under bench protection. The curved base is 150mm

deep and is used in conjunction with a safety spill tray.

Storage BoxesFor the storage of waste materials and samples, a wide range of bins and boxes is available. These have hinged lids

and interchangeable inserts which can hold various sizes of tubes such as microcentrifuge, and centrifuge tubes,

scintillation vials, universals, cryotubes and falcon tubes. Drawstring heavy duty waste bags are also available.

BinsFor short term storage of radioactive materials, there is the Biocom range of floor standing and bench top

bins all with hinged lids and anti slip feet. The two largest Beta storage bins also have wheels for easy

manoeuvrability. The Gamma radiation protection bins come in five sizes. Heavy duty drawstring bags are

available for all bins.

Cabinet - WorkstationOperating as a fully enclosed workstation, the user can either sit or stand without the view being obstructed.

Services can be used inside the cabinet via a rear port. The unit can also e used to store materials when the

doors are closed.

Custom BuildShields and boxes can be manufactured in a variety of shapes and sizes at low cost to exactly match

requirements. Materials that can be used include lead acrylic in three thicknesses. In addition to the standard

12mm thick material is 35mm thick offering gamma attenuation equivalent to 1.5mm thick lead and 70mm

thick, offering gamma attenuation equivalent to 3.0mm thick lead.

Beta & Gamma Shields

The adjustable angle shields can bemoved from an upright 0° to 15°

position, and can be used in either atall or wide conformation.

With the same features as theBiocom Beta series of shieldingproducts, the Gamma series

attenuate gamma emitters withenergy up to the of 125Iodine. A 35mm thick shield, whichattenuates gamma radiation

equivalent to 1.5mm thick lead,is also available.

Duoshield attenuates bothbeta and gamma radiation.

The 45° angle shieldscome in two sizes,small and large.

They reduce shadowsand light images andprovide unobstructedvision. A Biocom threesided shield is alsoavailable for further allround protection.

Three sided shieldsprovide all roundprotection and areideal for use on labbenches which faceeach other.

Biocom manufacture a range of standard and non standard beta andgamma boxes for specific applications. These utilise Interchangeableinserts for various sizes of tubes such as microcentrifuge, and centrifugetubes, scintillation vials, universals, cryotubes and Falcon tubes.

The Midi box model for eitherbeta or gamma protection,can hold twice as many

microcentrifuge tubes than themini box as well as 32 x 2mlmicrotubes or cryotubes.

The maxi box model foreither beta or gamma

protection, and can holdup to three midi box

inserts as well as insertsfor taller tube types.

A specially designed box isspecifically engineered totake four way flipper racksis available.

Biocom offers a series of space saving blocks. The smallest is designed toaccommodate four microtubes and has an accessory lid. The Duoboxesare available in both beta and gamma material and are used for the safestorage and transport of two radioactivity vials.

The largest blocks are the beta and gammastore blocks which incorporate built-in racks for24 x 1.5ml tubes and 15 x 0.5ml microtubes.

The ultra compact mini box is designedfor storage of low numbers ofmicrotubes or cryotube samples anduses the minimum of lab bench space.

Storage and Waste Bins

Cabinet - for all-roundprotection

Biocom manufactures a range of bins for storage of Beta or Gammaradioactive material. These are used in conjunction with heavy dutydrawstring bags. They are available in a variety of sizes from small1 litre capacity up to floor standing 122 litres.

The gamma radiation protection bins are available in five sizes asstandard up to 53 litres. Bins can be custom built as per requirements.

The two largest beta storage bins also have wheels for easy manoeuvrability.

Tip boxes, used in conjunctionwith drawstring bags, offer aconvenient and visible area to

dispose of radioactivelycontaminated tips. These areavailable for single channelpipettes, for multi channel

pipettes and manufactured forboth beta and gamma.
