There are three Holy Names that make up the Maha-Mantra, Hare, Krishna, and
Raama.

1. “Hare” is a powerful word that directly addresses the energy of the Lord.
2. “Krishna” is the name of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Krishna is the
possessor of every quality in and out of the universe. He also possesses
these qualities in an unlimited quantity.
3. “Raama” means the reservoir of pleasure.
By chanting this Mahamantra and doing service to Krishna, anyone can be linked
to this reservoir and get unlimited happiness. While engaged in nama-
sankirtana one should chant with deep feeling, full faith, firm determination, and
the realization that Radha-Shyamasundara are personally present in the maha-
mantra with all of their transcendental beauty, qualities, and pastimes. Such
performance of nama-sankirtana will surely bring the desired result of Krishna-
prema.

Because She steals Krsna's mind and because She is the embodiment of
Krsna's divine joy, Raadhaa is known as Haraa. “Hare” is the vocative form
(used to call someone) of that name, Haraa.

Because He robbed the women of Vraja of their shame (traapam), their
religious principles (dharmam), their self-possession, and their pride, and
through the playing of His flute drew them out of their homes (gruhaat) and
into the forest, He is known as Krsna.

Krsna is glorified by the name Raama because He constantly (anisham) causes
the Vraja cowherd women's minds(manah) and senses (five, pancendriya) to
enjoy (ramayate) the charms of His beauty.

The Maha Mantra
Swami B.G. Narasingha Jun 4 2008 - Krishna Talk 79
The following is extracted from writings of Swami B. G. Narasingha, see link given
here http://gosai.com/writings/the-maha-mantra
The conception of the maha-mantra as a whole, as well as each of its constituent parts
(Hare, Krsna and Rama), are uniquely different in Gaudiya Vaisnavism than in any other
spiritual tradition of India.
“Sri Caitanya's highest conception of things is always svayam bhagavan, krsna-lila,
radha-govinda-lila. That is the real purpose of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's advent and
teachings. In that consideration, the Hare Krsna mantra does not mention the rama-lila of
Ayodhya at all. There is no connection with that in the highest conception of the Hare
Krsna mantra.’

“And the inner conception of the mantra is responsible for our spiritual attainment. When
one pronounces the Name of Rama, if he means Dasarathi Rama, his attraction will take
him there, to Ayodhya; if he means Parasurama, he will be attracted to another place.
And if Raama means Radha-ramana Raama, he will go to Goloka. The inner
conception of the devotee will guide him to his destination." (Loving Search For The
Lost Servant)
The Names in the maha-mantra are Hare, Krsna and Rama. The followers of the
Sankaracarya school, as well as those of the Ramanuja and Madhva schools, conceive the
Name of Hare to be the vocative case of Hari. Thus for them ‘Hare’ means Narayana,
‘Raama’ means Ramacandra and ‘Krsna’ means the avatar of Narayana [not Krsna the
avatari, or source of Narayana].
For the Gaudiyas, Hare is the vocative case of Hara, the internal pleasure potency of
Krsna. Thus Hare means Srimati Radharani.
