NAPLANThe National Assessment Plan for Literacy and Numeracy, simply known as NAPLAN, hit the media headlines again this week as the Federal Government, through ACARA(Australian Curriculum and Reporting Authority) prepares to release the 2014 results to schools and parents over the coming weeks.

The controversy this year has centred once again on the writing task, which asked students of all year levels undertaking the assessment (Years 3, 5, 7 and 9) to write apersuasive piece on the question, “Which rule or law would you make better in your view?” The criticism was that this question was too difficult for younger primary schoolstudents. This issue was raised this week to account for the lower scores in the writing component this year. Interestingly, students across all years scored lower in writingcompared to 2011 results. ACARA has now announced that it will investigate other options, such as making the questions more age-appropriate and giving students a choiceof questions, rather than a single prompt. The writing task was also the centre of controversy a couple of years ago when the genre changed from narrative to persuasive. This year for the first time ACARA did not reveal which style of writing would be tested.

When the 2014 results reach the College, there will be considerable analysis at both an individual and cohort level. In conjunction with all of the other assessments carried outduring the course of the year, this information will help us to cater for individual needs and provide feedback to teachers and Departments about their curriculum andpedagogical approach. I would remind parents to view these NAPLAN results in the same light and remember this is just one snapshot of your child’s progress along theireducational journey. Please read the attached letter from ACARA to parents about the NAPLAN results.

The Destructiveness of GossipLike many other lovers of the entertainment industry, I was shocked and saddened to hear of the recent death of Robyn Williams. A man who could on one hand, mesmerisehis audience with his wit and impersonations as a comedian, and then in a split second later, bring it to tears as a superb and convincing actor. As sad and as intriguing asWilliams’ death has been, what has saddened me more, is the insatiable desire for the popular press to delve into every nook and cranny of his life in an attempt to sell morecopies of their edition and find an angle (true or otherwise) that explains his ultimate demise.

None of us is immune to the attraction of the popular press. The checkout queue at Woolworths at Westfield is unfortunately almost always long, and I confess thatperiodically I succumb to the temptation of trawling through the magazines that are displayed by the exits. Invariably they are trashy and focus on the private lives ofprominent people who are either getting married or divorced, putting on weight, or are anorexic, or mocked for their shameful choice of clothing. All of the magazines seem tohave “exclusive” stories on the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and the more salacious the detail, the bigger the headline. Essentially, the main focus is gossip – half-truestories that reveal the vulnerabilities, flaws and frailties of the successful and wealthy.

Oscar Wilde once suggested that there is only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about. I am not sure I agree. These magazines seem togain much of their copy and their success from diminishing, discrediting and degrading others. I have no doubt that these magazines sell extremely well (even though thenon-paying readers in supermarket queues may have inadvertently ‘dog-eared’ the corners) and I am confident that there will always be a demand for this sort of intrusion intoother people’s lives. The trouble is, however, that the seemingly inexhaustible desire for gossip is not restricted to magazines or celebrities.

Unfortunately, gossip has the potential to be divisive, hurtful and, more often than not, removed from the truth. In recent times, I have become increasingly concerned thatmany of the issues with which I have to deal concerning conflict between people arise out of gossip, mistruths and half-truths that have been uncritically shared. Rumour, innuendo and hearsay too often are vested with the authority of absolute fact and shared as such, often without any attempt to corroborate or establish the truth.

It is beholden upon all of us to be wary of sharing stories about others, of engaging uncritically in gossip and of perpetuating rumours. Gossip is corrosive of community anddamaging to individuals. None of us is without flaw or frailty. We should simply recognise this as part of the human condition. I suppose gossip, regrettably, is also part of thehuman condition. Maybe we should all make a positive effort to focus only on the good that others do. I strongly suspect, however, that this would not sell magazines.

The Long and the Short of ItEarlier this year I wrote in the eBulletin regarding my desire to have greater uniformity of hem lengths on the girls’ skirts and dresses. Although there has been some successin bringing about a change in this area, the current ‘four finger above the knee’ rule, has been problematic for staff to police. Many staff have commented to me that they feelthis rule is very ambiguous and they feel uncomfortable attempting to measure skirt lengths. As a result, it has been decided that from the beginning of 2015 all skirts anddresses will be required to be ‘to the knee’. This will, hopefully, remove the subjective nature of this issue.

RegardsFiona Godfrey

Researchers are struggling to keep up with the neurological, psychological and social impact of this generation’s ‘fast and furious’ technology revolution. Unregulated andpoorly managed technology use is negatively influencing the mental health and well-being of our children. The speed of change in hand-held technology continues to outpaceour understanding of its effect on the developing brain. The presenter, Radford psychologist Gayelene Clews, will take a harm-minimisation approach for sensible technologymanagement amongst teens.

If you are concerned about your child’s technology use, their ability to emotionally regulate frenetic, impulsive, disorganised orinattentive behaviour, or are concerned about signs of anxiety or depression, this session is for you.

NEXT P&F COMMITTEE MEETINGContact: The President, Hannah Baudert

Date: Thursday 11 SeptemberTime: 7pmVenue: The Boardroom at Radford College

A guide to the outcomes and discussed issues/initiatives of latest P&F Management Committee monthly meetings – 24 July 2014 and 14 August 2014

The P&F Management Committee’s role is to work cooperatively with the College Leadership and Board by providing a forum for discussing educational and general schoolmatters, putting forward suggestions, and providing feedback on proposed strategies involving things of interest to the parent body. We realize that most parents are busy sothe parent body would possibly benefit from an easily digestible overview of the key issues discussed and addressed at each monthly meeting - via the weekly E-Bulletin.

24 July 2014

The Committee had the pleasure of meeting and welcoming Ms Dearne Marrapodi, Acting Head of Learning and Teaching, who represented Mrs Godfrey. The Art Show profits amounted to $14,912. Well done Art Show organizing committee! In consultation with the Principal, the P&F Committee has decided on where this year’s P&F funding would be allocated:

$50,000 – Year 7/8 area common room fit out (see plans in Claire Melloy's report in last week's Bulletin)$40,000 – provision of shade materials/structures for years 5/6/7/8/9/10$10,000 – towards the provision of new tables and chairs for the ELC.

The P&F does not have a P&F Logo. Ideally we hope to harmonize the logo with the new rebranding of the College, but at the same time create a logo with‘personality’. To that end, we are planning to run a competition for the parent and student community. (More detail to follow later in the year).

We are in the process of ordering a portable shade "popup" fo use by the P&F at Radford College community events such as the Fete. The P&F was major sponsor of the recent and very successful Dirrum Dirrum Conference, an inspiring event about ideas, leadership and change hosted by studentsin the first weekend in August http://www.dirrumdirrum.org/

14 August 2014

Year 8 students made a presentation to the P&F about the design and project planning to convert the unused ‘cave’ area below the Library into a Year 7/8 commonroom (which will also be a multi-purpose room for uses such as RAS). This was one of the activities which received funding from the P&F in the previousmeeting. Lydia Murray, Caroline Greenland, Andrew Rushby and Kat-e Yeow jointly presented aspects of their design to the committee. We were greatly impressedwith their enthusiasm and confident delivery.

Father Richard Browning was also present for the first part of the meeting. He thanked the P&F for their financial support of the Dirrim Dirrum Conference. BothP&F President Hannah and Richard spoke of the copious good-will and the enormous collaborative energy of all involved with the conference. From the Head of Junior SchoolPaul Southwell

My past few eBytes pieces have been around a bigger picture, around mindsets. Perhaps today it's time to revisit some nuts and bolts?

Some quick reminders about "end-of-day" for the P to 4 site - comments re Years 5 & 6 next week!

students going to buses or the Senior School side, wait on Hall platform for teacher to cross them over at 3.30pmParents - please don't park in the staff area near Music and Year Four rooms. We often have classes in these areas.the "pick and go" section is moving well at present. To better assist, cars may double-park in this area during pick up, if you stay in vehicle. Staff members can bringyour sons and daughters to you, making sure all vehicles move to student area to pick up means cars are not stuck behind you on roundabout also.staff are on duty until 3.45 pm. Arrival around that time is very smooth.

I thank you in advance for observing these guidelines.

Book Week ParadeLooking forward to Friday’s parade. I have again challenged our boys and girls to fully engage in this day. To seek out a character from a favoured book, to jump in, no matterour ages. I'm sure I will not be found!

Exhibition, Learning Journeys and Student-Lead ConferencesAs we move into the second half of our term , we also move to our student reporting phase. This term is special for us as it allows our boys and girls to share with you thewonderful journey they are experiencing each day. This week I have been quite taken aback by the standard of our Year 1 presenters, calmly talking their parents throughtheir Units of Work. The culmination of this period of reporting will be our Year 6 Exhibition. The opportunity for our leading year level to present their understanding of theentire journey through our Junior School.

Year 4 1-to-1 Parent Information EveningWe are slowly commencing our introductory journey toward the expansion of our iPad program in 2015, which will see Years 5 and 6 classes accessing individual iPads, forsome of their daily learning. I say 'slowly', as I am keen to retain a focus upon this year, we need to share where our pilot program has brought us to date, we need to supportfamily needs, and we need to remember that this is a device to assist our teaching and learning, it's a tool.

Next MondayA big day, the 25th August. This year a slight change from me. Rather than harping on about a certain Birthdate, I seek a small message from our boys and girls, a messageabout something they wish to challenge themselves about, perhaps an area of schoolwork, or personal interactions, or home learning, or cocurricular growth - a challenge, asmall challenge. My teachers may join in, perhaps you also? Together we can show a mindset change? Just write it down and leave it in my office, a small step together.

Finally, last Friday our Year 6 Challenge Team presented their Engineering Competition event. The Team worked together to build upon their idea, they presented thechallenge, and hosted the entire Friday session. Please see the winning "rocket" built by Maxine and Doug Kerruish! The rocket car travelled well over 40 metres.

A great week in our JS!

Warmest RegardsPaul Southwell

PYP IN ACTION TERM 2, WEEK 8, 2014

PYP Coordinator: Belinda Reitstatter

This section of our Junior School Bytes is designed to keep our school community informed about our Primary Years Programme curriculum in the Junior School.

Through my time spent with different teaching teams and students over the last week, I have become increasingly aware of the global relevance of our units of inquiry. Manychildren pose questions that seek an understanding, or at least genuine perspectives, of how an issue is viewed in a country other than their own. Last week I heard a Year 6student who was working on her Exhibition say that ‘Gay marriage is a very delicate and controversial issue to discuss with people.’ She wondered whether this is only thecase in Australia or whether it is evident among other countries of the world? A Year 4 student asked, ‘How was it that so many people around the world were inspired byNelson Mandela even though he lived in South Africa at a time when there were no Internet or computers?’

The idea of sharing stories and perspectives that provoke children to actively listen to and synthesise various viewpoints is a driving force behind authentic inquiries. Suchexperiences require children to think open-mindedly while also critically evaluating ideas. One can see that this child-centred approach relies on the child gaining access toopinions that one may not necessarily find in a book or on a website. Personal connections can be particularly useful here.

Today I was planning some provocations for a unit of inquiry that will investigate how waste associated with consumerism and economic activities impacts the environment. The teachers and I talked about this issue in Canberra, then in Australia and then we began wondering how this may affect other countries in the world? Holland andSingapore were two countries that immediately sprang to mind. Both small countries, with large populations and economic activity.

Should you or any member of your family have lived in or grown up in a country other than Australia, and be willing to answer the occasional email from ateacher or a student to help broaden the global perspectives of our inquiries, please contact me. Your story, memories and connections would be of great valueto us.

Year 6 Exhibition - save the date! the culmination of the Year 6 Exhibition will be held on Wednesday 17 September at 6pm in the RA Young Hall. All members of the Radford community are welcome to this evening.

InCAS 2014

Page 16: #RadfordACT community are welcome 6pm Wed 16 September ... Bulletin 20 August 2014.pdf · Seminar by Gayelene Clews COMMUNITY: Collegians &P&F OTHER NEWS Year 6 @ibpyp Exhibition

Assistant Head of Junior School Years 3-6: Marina Malcolm

You may hear your child talking about completing INCAS over the coming weeks so we thought we would take this opportunity to briefly explain a little more about what isinvolved in this process.

InCAS (Interactive Computerised Assessment System) is a computerized test that is designed to enable teachers to focus on children’s strengths and to identify anyweaknesses they may have. It is a personalised computer assessment, tailored to generate an age-equivalent score for your child.

This is not a formal assessment where a curriculum is taught for a specific test, neither should it show up any huge revelations on your child. It is merely a confirmation ofteacher’s opinions and will not have any impact on the reporting cycle. It will be used to confirm any areas that your child’s class teacher will have already identified. Forexample, a child may have good word recognition skills but poor decoding. In this case, the teacher will be able to intervene and focus on this area in order to improve thechild’s performance in reading.

InCAS assesses maths, literacy, developed ability and attitudes through a computer-delivered assessment that requires minimal teacher intervention during administration. Itsmodular design includes the following: Word Recognition, Word Decoding, Comprehension, Spelling, General Mathematics, Mental Arithmetic, Picture Vocabulary, Non-verbalAbility, Attitudes.

If your child’s teacher has any major concerns following these assessments, they will, of course, contact you immediately. However, please note that these assessments areonly one small part of the formative and summative assessment process used in our classrooms, providing us with a snapshot of how your child is performing on oneparticular day.

Your child will participate in InCAS during Weeks 6 and 7 of this term. More details about InCAS testing: what is assessed and how?

Library News...Contact: Jane Stanton, Teacher Librarian Our Book Week celebrations are fast approaching and preparations are well underway. The Book Week parade is a highly anticipated event in our school and it is alwayspleasing to see the wonderful costumes that are created for the big event. We do not expect families to go out and buy expensive costumes; anything you can use from homewould be fine. We are also hosting a Book Week performance, the Wonderful world of Roald Dahl, on Thursday 21st August. Students from Pre Kinder to Year 5 will beattending this event in the RA Young Hall. Every class will be participating in art and craft activities relating to the Book Week books during their library times.

The theme of Book Week 2014 is Connect to Reading - Reading to Connect - enjoying the experience of exploring story and travelling to other worlds. Reading toConnect also suggests that reading assists in creating a bond with others. Within the world of the contemporary child, students read to connect through a variety of media.

BOOK CHARACTER PARADE We are looking forward to the Book Character Parade which is happening on Friday 22 August in the Gold Quad commencing at 11:20 am. We extend a warm welcometo all parents, families and friends to come to our parade and share this big event with us.

LUNCHBOX TIPS

With busy lives, preparing and packing a healthy lunchbox can be a difficult task but the foods we send to school with our children can contribute up to 1/3 of their daily intakeof nutrients. So it is important to pack a balanced lunch to ensure they are receiving the necessary nutrients required.

Keeping “occasional” foods such as snack food bars, sweet biscuits, flavoured or coated popcorn and savoury biscuits and chips out of the lunch box will be of benefit to yourchild’s overall health. Although they can offer a practical convenient solution for lunchboxes, these foods aren’t recommended for every day, because they’re low in nutritionand high in calories. If there’s no other choice, your child is more likely to eat the healthy food you’ve packed.

1. Wholegrain carbohydratesIf your sandwiches continually return uneaten, it may be your choice of bread. Plain, white bread goes soggy quickly, so these sandwiches are not as appetising. Make ahealthier meal by using wraps, flat breads, grainy bread rolls, crackers and high-fibre loaves. If your kids normally reject grainy breads, research shows that they’ll eat them ifyou introduce them gradually.

2. ProteinProtein-rich foods provide a number of key nutrients for kids, including calcium, iron and magnesium. Recent research found that up to 84 per cent of school-aged kids arenot getting the recommended daily serves of dairy. But with the range of dairy snacks available, it’s an easy fix. Cheese sticks, yoghurt tubes and flavoured long-life milkpoppers are all nutritious and low-GI. You can also make sandwiches higher in protein with fillings such as tuna, lean ham, chicken, turkey, salmon or hard boiled eggs. Thisslows their rate of digestion, supporting energy levels.

3. FruitIt’s so easy to include a piece of fruit in a lunchbox, but natural foods have been largely replaced by processed and pre-packaged snacks. According to The Medical Journalof Australia, less than half of children and adolescents consume the recommended servings of fruit (with even fewer consuming the recommended servings of veg)! If fruit iscoming home because it’s bruised, stick to hard fruit like oranges, or try a small container filled with berries, grapes or melon pieces. Or alternate fresh fruit with driedvarieties, although fresh is best, as it contains fewer kilojoules and more fibre.

4. SnacksIn 2005, Australian researchers found that children and adolescents consume more energy from low-nutrient, kilojoule-dense foods than any other age group, with theaverage child receiving three packaged snack foods in their lunchbox each day. Ideally, aim to provide just one packaged muesli or snack bar each day and try to choosewholegrain and dairy-based snacks. By providing a small amount each week, they won’t feel that they’re missing out.

5. FluidsWhile poppers are a much-loved lunchbox feature and soft drinks are guaranteed to be finished, they’re just not necessary in your child’s lunch. In fact, a 2008 review by theJournal of the American Dietetic Association suggests that sugar-sweetened drinks such as fruit juice, soft drinks, sports drinks and cordials may contribute to childhoodobesity in three ways: larger portion sizes, higher percentages of children consuming them and increasing numbers of servings. They recommend kids drink no more than twosweetened drinks each week – including fruit juice.
