Australian buyers are expected to
flock to the UK yearling sales this
year - virtually, if not in person -
with owners seeking to follow a
new path to finding staying prospects, a formula
that will be tested in Group 1 contests on
opposite sides of the planet today with Russian
Camelot (Camelot) in the Underwood Stakes
(Gr 1, 1800m) at Caulfield and Zoetic (Kodiac)
in Newmarket’s Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f).
In October 2018, British agent Jeremy
Brummitt bought Russian Camelot from
Newmarket’s Tattersalls sales for Danny O’Brien,
with the yearling transferred straight to Australia
shortly after the 120,000gns (approx. AUD$228,000)
purchase. Continued on page 2>>

Just over 18 months later, having had
just four starts - including one previous stakes run at Flemington - Russian
Camelot became the first northern hemisphere-bred colt to win a Derby
in Australia when scoring in the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m).
Having been bred in Ireland, Russian Camelot was 144 days younger
than the second youngest three-year-old contesting the race and gave 172
days to runner-up Dalasan (Dalakhani).
Brummitt, who recognises fellow bloodstock agent John Foote as the first
person to try this method, believes more purchasers are now likely to follow suit.
“I buy through Australia and send them straight to Danny - who was
the first person prepared to back my judgement down there - because
I’ve been trying to persuade
people that was the route to go
for a while,” Brummitt told ANZ
Bloodstock News this week.
“The domestic market has
been thin for a long time and the
only thing that sustains British
racing is we’ve got the best
horses in the world.
“The only racing nation
that competes with Britain at a
mile and up on the turf is Japan,
and they are the only other nation with a balanced racing programme.
Everybody else is sprint happy and losing genes that are vital to produce
the best horses.
“It’s interesting that Mike Ryan took 24 horses to America last year out
of Book 1.
“We sold him (Kingman colt) Public Sector, who has bolted in first time
out, and I’m sure there will be a lot more Australians coming, because it’s a
competitive business and the nature of the beast is, if they’re getting beaten,
they don’t like it, so they’ll come and try and find a horse to do the same thing.
“Largely, the business is one of sheep, not shepherds, and they follow
the trend rather than setting the trend. In spite of Covid-19, I think there
will be increased interest in trade from America and Australia.”
Brummitt is also involved in buying yearlings for connections that are
kept in Britain for their three-year-old season in preparation to run in the
major Cups and weight-for-age races down under.
Brummitt, explaining his thinking behind this method, said: “We
are trying to prepare future Cup horses for Australia in Britain. Danny is
going to saddle one on Saturday (at Caulfield) called Wyclif, who we ran in
Britain and was top-weight in the King George V at Royal Ascot.
“We have got Australian partners in that, so he’s had five runs up here
and now he’s going to start his Australian campaign. It’s been handled
with a view to doing what’s right by the horse instead of squeezing the
lemon dry.”

Perfect for the owner/breeder
THE DOMESTIC MARKET HAS BEEN THIN FOR A LONG TIME AND THE ONLY THING THAT SUSTAINS BRITISH RACING IS WE’VE GOT THE BEST HORSES IN THE WORLD- JEREMY BRUMMITT
British trainer James Ferguson is
involved with similar arrangements and currently has Australian-owned
two-year-olds in training, such as Listed-winner Zoetic - who lines up
against Group 2 winners Dandalla (Dandy Man) and Miss Amulet (Sir
Prancealot) in the Cheveley Park tonight - and Francesco Guardi (Frankel).
“I’ve got a few Australian owners who have been kind enough to
support me from my time down there and a few syndicates have been put
together in order to buy yearlings in England with European pedigrees,”
Ferguson said.
“I effectively act as a pre-trainer. I will run them lightly, with the
ambition of finding a good horse for here, maybe getting them to Royal
Ascot next year, and then if they’re good enough to go down to Australia
they will head to their prospective trainers and hopefully be a good force
in Australia, especially in the staying races.
“I think the most attractive nature is the European pedigrees and the
way that horses are bought here. If a horse is good enough to run in the
Melbourne Cup as a three-year-old, they get such a weight advantage.
“It’s been proven that the Europeans have been good enough to go
over and do it. I think it’s another avenue of being able to find top quality
horses all over the world. The fact that they’re pre-trained in England,
because of the age difference, it works out better for them.”
Ferguson, who saddled his first runner less than 12 months ago, is
delighted with how the arrangement has worked so far and is hoping to
continue the relationship with Australian connections in the future.
“It’s provided me with a Group 1 runner this year in Zoetic and I’ve got
a few unraced horses in my yard for different syndicates in Australia and
hopefully we do a good job for people and have some success,” he said.
“It’s obviously a very tricky time for all buyers and vendors at the
moment - prices have been down 30 per cent at recent yearling sales - and
if there are horses that are suitable, of course I will be putting them up for
a few of those guys in Australia. I think it’s definitely a good avenue for
Australians to go down.
“With the current state of the market, horses may be bought for a
particularly good price and I’d love the opportunity to do it again.”
Despite current Covid-19 restrictions limiting opportunities for
Australian owners to come and see their horses run in Britain, it has still
been a worthwhile experience for Benny Vassallo, racing manager at B K
Racing, who form part of Francesco Guardi’s ownership group and has a
close relationship with Chris Waller in Australia.
“The opportunity came from our association with Chris Waller Racing
and that of his right-hand man Charlie Duckworth’s friendship with James
Ferguson,” explained Vassallo.
“Charlie approached us (B K Racing) to be part of the syndicate to race
internationally, with the aim of building a strong foundation to come to Australia.
“Luckily enough Francesco Guardi created the perfect start to the
association when winning his first start.
“The feedback we get from James Ferguson Racing is as close contact
as possible, with regular audio and visual updates direct from James.”
Great British Racing International, who support individuals keen on
getting involved with the sport, are champions of this ownership strategy
and expect it to become more popular over the coming years.
Minty Farquhar, GBRI’s acting
general manager, said: “Over
the past few years, we have seen
American buyers wake up to the fact
that the logical next step to sourcing
high-class European pedigrees is to
target the yearling market.
“With horses like Russian
Camelot and Fifty Stars
demonstrating what can be
achieved down under with Tattersalls October yearlings, it feels as if we are
on the cusp of this strategy becoming the new trend in Australia, too.
“Australian owners keeping their horses in training in the northern
hemisphere for the early part of their career also makes eminent sense,
and I expect it’s something we will see more of in the coming years.
“Not only does it suit the horses to get an education in amongst others
their own age group at one of Britain’s outstanding training centres or
private facilities, but in a normal year, you’d like to think these owners
would have the opportunity to travel to the UK to watch their horse
compete at Britain’s world-famous summer racing festivals.
“It is just a shame that they have not been rewarded for their
bold approach with such experiences in 2020, but we look forward to
welcoming them in 2021.”

160 for Fastnet RockCoolmore Stud’s Fastnet Rock (Danehill) brought
up his 160th stakes winner last night when
Glenfiddich (3 c ex Nothin But A Dream by First
Defence) broke through for his first black-type
victory in the Bill Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at
Moonee Valley. Ridden on the speed by Luke
Nolen, the Peter Moody-trained Glenfiddich -
who had 15 ratings points on his rivals, having
twice been placed at Group 1 level - raced clear
to score by two lengths over the strong-finishing
Cherry Tortoni (Night Of Thunder) with a further
head to Holyfield (I Am Invincible) in third.
Fastnet Rock stands for $165,000 (inc GST) at
Coolmore Australia this year.
Eight for Shamus AwardSwats That (3 f ex Is It A Mosquito by Bel
Esprit), an ANZ Bloodstock News Maiden of
the Week after her debut win at Bendigo in
March, became the eighth stakes winner for
Rosemont Stud’s Shamus Award (Snitzel)
last night when she took out the Scarborough
Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Moonee Valley. Stuck
wide throughout under John Allen, the Leon
and Troy Corstens-prepared Swats That raced
clear on the home bend and maintained
that advantage to the line, defeating Highly
Discreet (Street Boss) by two lengths with Dirty
Thoughts (So You Think) a further nose away
third. Shamus Award stands for $19,800 (inc
GST) at Rosemont Stud this season.
37 for ZoffanyZoffany (Dansili) registered his 37th individual
stakes winner last night when import Al Galayel
(7 g ex Glympse by Spectrum) continued his good
run of form by adding the JRA Cup (Gr 3, 2040m)
to his record. Sent out as favourite off the back of
his defeat of subsequent Naturalism Stakes (Gr
3, 2000m) winner Orderofthegarter (Galileo),
the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained
Al Galayel looped the field and raced away to
score by two and a quarter lengths; Plein Ciel
(Mamool) filled second, with the same margin
back to 2018 ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)
hero Levendi (Pierro) in third. Zoffany, who
shuttled to Australia for four seasons from 2012
to 2015, stood at Coolmore’s Irish base for €22,500
(approx. AUD$37,150) this year.
Jamaican Rain headlines Inglis Digital saleTriple stakes winner Jamaican Rain (Manhattan
Rain) is the star name among the 265 lots offered
in the Inglis Digital September (Late) Online
Sale, for which bidding opened yesterday. The
winner of eight races and more than $460,000 in
prize-money is offered unreserved, listed as lot
224. Other catalogue highlights include Janneke
(Olympic Glory) a four-year-old half sister to
multiple Group 1 winner In Her Time (Time Thief)
listed as lot 91 and Eager Beaver (Darci Brahma),
a winning sister to New Zealand Two Thousand
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Catalyst, who is
listed as lot 262. The final countdown of bidding
commences at 3pm (AEST) on September 30. To

Alexiou hopes for Peltzer upsetGerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou will saddle
up their first Group 1 runner as a training
partnership when Peltzer (So You Think)
tackles today’s Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m) at Rosehill. Unbeaten as a two-year-old,
the colt followed a first-up second to runaway
winner Anders (Not A Single Doubt) in the San
Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) with a last-start
fourth to Rothfire (Rothesay) in a hectic renewal
of The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m). Today’s
race is expected to be run at a kinder tempo and
Alexiou believes that will allow Peltzer to travel
in his comfort zone. "Rothfire looks very hard to
beat but he still has to reproduce that run the
other day and it's not always easy for them to
do," he said. "I'm not saying he can't, but there
are some very nice horses behind him if he
doesn't happen to run up to what he did."
Jen ready to rule in PendantJen Rules (Redoute’s Choice) will take her place
in today’s Golden Pendant (Gr 2, 1400m) at
Rosehill after belying her $31 starting price to
finish runner-up to Haut Brion Her (Zoustar) in
the Sheraco Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) last time out.
Connections had originally planned to wait for
next month's Nivison Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) but
co-trainer Peter Snowden said Jen Rules had all
but forced their hand. "I wasn't going to run her
this Saturday but she has done so well and she
pulled up really well, I thought I'd throw her in,"
said Snowden, who trains in partnership with
his son Paul. "She has come back in fantastic
order. She is the best she has ever looked. She's
got more strength on her, more muscle on her.
It's not hard to see why she ran as well as she
did the other day."

Lord Fandango’s second chanceJeremy Gask harbours sentimental feelings
and a positive attitude about his recently
acquired staying import Lord Fandango
(Lord Of England), who tackles today’s Colin
Stephen Quality (Gr 3, 2400m) at Rosehill.
The renewed connection between horse
and trainer appears to have reignited an
interest in racing for the eight-year-old, who
has been winless since claiming the Herbert
Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) back in 2017. The
German-bred stayer was initially prepared in
England by Gask before the trainer relocated
to South Australia and the horse had spells
with Archie Alexander, and more recently
Lindsey Smith. "He's been a nice horse, a
sentimental horse in many ways." Gask said
of Lord Fandango. "The original owners from
the UK have stuck with him and we'll see if
we can get him back into some form. I think
there is some light there. After the carnival is
over he'll be suited to the handicapping races
but I don't think there's necessarily a huge
amount of depth in that race tomorrow. He
stays all day and I'd like to see him run a nice
race."
So Si Bon to soarConnections of So Si Bon (So You Think) are
predicting a bold show from the seven-year-
old when he lines up against warm favourite
Russian Camelot (Camelot) and the rest in
today’s Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at
Caulfield. Although the gelding has managed
just five wins from his 54 starts to date, two
of those victories have come this year and he
illustrated his current wellbeing with a third
behind Fierce Impact (Deep Impact) in the
Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on his most
recent outing. "I am hoping Russian Camelot
could be a bit vulnerable second-up," Tom
Dabernig, who trains So Si Bon in partnership
with Ben Hayes, told Racing.com. "No doubt
it's going to be a good contest. But he's a tough,
old horse that hasn't missed a beat. I am sure
he will run to the best of his ability. He's very
fit. If there's a bit of rain about, you know he
likes those conditions. He's in great order, he's
really thrived since the run. I think he will run
his usual, competitive race."
Williams duo on song for UnderwoodMatt Williams believes the Underwood is an even
race - barring Russian Camelot. Williams will have
two runners in the Group 1 event in the shape of
emerging prospect Harbour Views (Le Havre)
and veteran Gailo Chop (Deportivo). "If Russian
Camelot wasn't in the race, I'd say it's a really even
weight-for-age race but I think we've got to find a
couple of lengths to be able to beat him," Williams
said. Harbour Views lines up off the back of third-
placed finish behind the opposing Humidor
(Teofilo) in the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and
his trainer continued: "He's going really well and
I think he's going to be in the placings but he'll
need some luck, I think, to beat Russian Camelot.”
Williams is also predicting stablemate Gailo Chop
can outrun his odds if he is allowed to dictate the
speed and lead at a slow tempo. The ten-year-old
is coming off an unplaced run in the Makybe Diva
Stakes but he also finished down the track in the
Group 1 last year before rebounding to run third to
Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) in the Underwood.
Wand wants it wet in PreludeA glance at Melbourne's long-range weather
forecast convinced Sydney trainer Matthew
Smith to chance his arm with Rock My Wand
(Wandjina) in today’s Thousand Guineas Prelude
(Gr 2, 14000m). The Bureau of Meteorology
predicted showers in Melbourne yesterday and
today and Smith is hoping they fall over Caulfield.
Rock My Wand has raced twice on heavy tracks
for a Rosehill win in April and a minor placing
behind subsequent stakes winner Thermosphere
(Exosphere). If she gets similar conditions today,
Smith thinks the filly can make her presence felt.
"If we get the rain and we get into a heavy track,
I'm a genius. If it doesn't rain, I'm an idiot," Smith
said. "That's why we sent her because she is a
pretty good wet tracker but it probably needs to
be a bit wet to help bring her into the race. But to
be fair, she has been going the right way at home.
Her work has been improving and her runs have
improved."
No rush for NonconformistGrahame Begg will wait and see how
Nonconformist (Rebel Raider) fares at Caulfield
today before deciding which route he will take
with his Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) hope. The
four-year-old will line up in handicap company
over 1700 metres this afternoon, having finished
third over 1400 metres on his return to action
at the track last month. "We could possibly
back-up into the Turnbull Stakes or look at the
Cranbourne Cup on Sunday, October 11," the
trainer told Racing.com. "But in that case (the
latter) you'd then be backing up six days later
into the Caulfield Cup. So we need to do what's
right for the horse, he's so lightly raced so if it
doesn't work out this year then it doesn't work
out. You can't be missing races and chasing
your tail (in the spring) and making the wrong
decisions, we have to have the timing right."
Regarding Nonconformist’s chances today,
Begg added: "From barrier 11 I think we'd have
him in his comfort zone, there looks to be fairly
reasonable speed so I'd imagine he'd be no
worse than midfield."
Green light for Weetwood contenderAn ideal barrier and suitable weight have
convinced Chris Munce to give the green
light for Boomsara (Spirit Of Boom) to run in
today’s Weetwood Handicap (Listed, 1200m)
at Toowoomba. Boomsara has drawn perfectly
in barrier two and will
carry the same weight
as he did in the Eye
Liner Stakes (Listed,
1200m) at his most
recent appearance
in July when runner-
up behind the reopposing
Bandipur (Commands). Those factors swayed
Munce to run in the Weetwood, rather than
delay Boomsara's comeback until the Keith
Noud Quality (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben in
November. "I thought I could use this run to
keep his mind stimulated, otherwise it's going
to be a long time leading up to the Keith Noud
for him to just be shooting the breeze in the
stables," the trainer said. "For that reason, we
decided to run him. He'll race very well. His
jump-out was very good on Tuesday and he's
just a competitor when he turns up on race day.
I actually think he's terribly well weighted on 56
and a half kilograms from a good draw. There
were too many positives and inviting reasons to
run him in the Weetwood."

Sydney jockeys free to ride in MelbourneSydney’s leading jockeys will be able to ride
in Melbourne this spring after Racing Victoria
yesterday announced a number of changes to
its Covid-19 protocols. The relaxation of border
restrictions for participants entering the state
from this Sunday night means the likes of Hugh
Bowman, Kerrin McEvoy and James McDonald
will be able to ride in the $15 million
The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 17,
travel by private vehicle to Victoria the next day,
and then self-isolate for five days before providing
a negative Covid-19 test in order to ride at Moonee
Valley on Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) night and
Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) day. They would also be
available to ride at Flemington for the four Group
1 race days of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Under
Racing NSW's policy, returning jockeys would
need to quarantine for 14 days when they depart
Victoria. As part of yesterday’s announcement, RV
also confirmed the two kilogram Covid-19 weight
allowance for jockeys will remain in place until
the end of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Currie ready for ImpactLuke Currie was yesterday confirmed as the new
spring rider for Cox Plate aspirant Fierce Impact
(Deep Impact). The recent Makybe Diva Stakes
winner, who proved far too strong for an inferior
field of rivals when impressing in a 1200-metre
trial at Randwick yesterday, is expected to return
to Melbourne next week for a shot at the Turnbull
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington next Saturday.
Currie has been booked for the Turnbull and the
Cox Plate as connections wanted the same rider
for both 2000-metre races.
Flemington jump-out win for GraffDanny O'Brien's strong spring team looks to
have been further bolstered after former NSW
sprinter Graff (Star Witness) won a jump-out
for him at Flemington yesterday morning.
Graff last tasted success with his victory in
the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) back
in August 2018. "He's a really nice horse but
he hasn't won a race for a long time so we'll
kick him off at Caulfield in a few weeks and
see what he can do," O'Brien told Racing.com
after Damien Oliver had partnered Graff to an
800-metre jump-out win. “He went really well.
He's had a couple of months with us down at
Thirteenth Beach and we've been really happy
with him. He's a really nice horse and he's done
everything right since we've had him, so we'll
find out what we've got at Caulfield."
Hope for Seymour Cup meetingRacing will not return to Seymour on October
5 as had been hoped after Racing Victoria
yesterday announced that the meeting has
been transferred to Echuca. Following a series
of jump-outs at Seymour on Monday it has
been considered best for the meeting to be run
at Echuca, although it is still hoped the club can
conduct its Cup meeting at the track on October
18. "It is expected that the track will continue to
improve and consolidate as the weather warms
up with the club to host jump-outs again in the
coming weeks to further test the surface ahead
of their Cup meeting," an RV statement said.
The Seymour track underwent renovation over
the summer but has struggled to perform as
well as was hoped in three meetings since May.
NEW ZEALAND
Auckland Cup winner to make long-awaited returnToday’s NZB Ready To Run Sale Trainers Series
(Gr 3, 1400m) at New Plymouth will feature
the return of 2018 Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)
winner Ladies First (Dylan Thomas), who steps
out for the first time since February last year.
Trainer Allan Sharrock admits that he is not
expecting a lot from his charge first-up after
such a long break. “She did a pastern and she
spent 18 months away. The vet cleared her six
months ago,” Sharrock said. “We are just using
it as a trial, there was nowhere else to kick-off.
She has had three jump-outs so she is forward
enough to race. She has done the mileage and I
am happy enough with her, but I can’t see her
being competitive on Saturday. I think she won
first-up over 1400 metres as a maiden, but it will
be a little bit different on Saturday.” Sharrock
has no set plans with Ladies First but he said
her major targets may lie in the autumn. “We
will just play it by ear at this stage,” he added.
Magnum’s final hurrah Former Singapore sprinter Magnum (Per
Incanto) will begin what is likely to be his last
preparation at Ellerslie today. The Lauren
Brennan-trained eight-year-old is the top-weight
in the 1400-metre contest, with Opie Bosson
to take the ride. “I am very happy with him,”
Brennan said. “He may need the run. He has
had the one trial leading into it, but the firmer
track and heavier weight should be OK for him.
I was worried if the heavens opened up, being
topweight, he might have struggled through
that ground, but it should be good for him.” All
going to plan, Magnum will head to the final day
of the Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival to target the
Red Badge Spring Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m), a race
he has finished third and fourth in the last two
years. “This will be the lead-up race to the Red
Badge Sprint and then he will head onto that if
he still wants to be a racehorse,” Brennan said.
“He is lightly raced since he has been back from
Singapore, so we will just look after him and just
pick and choose a couple of races for him. This
will be his last season. He seems to be really well
in himself. He doesn’t act like an eight-year-old,
he acts like a two-year-old sometimes.”

Hong Kong: Golden Sixty out to topple Beauty GenerationGolden Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro) returns to
action at Sha Tin tomorrow with jockey Vincent
Ho buoyed by his star mount’s preparations
and intent on thwarting Beauty Generation’s
(Road To Rock) tilt at a fourth straight win in
the Celebration Cup (Gr 3, 1400m). The Hong
Kong Derby (RL, 2000m) winner has not raced
since he completed a sweep of the Four-Year-
Old Classic Series when winning that prize
brilliantly in March, a victory that gave him a
perfect seven from seven record for the term.
The Francis Lui-trained five-year-old is now
aiming to initiate a changing-of-the-guard at
the top of the Hong Kong pecking order as he
takes on one of the city’s all-time greats, Beauty
Generation. “Golden Sixty is a bit stronger both
mentally and physically; mentally he’s a lot
calmer this year. It’s exciting, even being back
on for gallops – it’s great to be back on him,” said
Ho, who became the first ‘homegrown’ rider in
25 years to win the Derby. “He feels great - he’s
working well, and his last gallop felt good.”
Hong Kong: Beauty Generation aims for another slice of history
As an 18-time winner in Hong Kong with
eight Group 1s and HK$104 million (approx.
AUD$18.95 million) to his name, Beauty
Generation has already achieved plenty.
Tomorrow, though, he will aim to add a fourth
win in the Celebration Cup while he strives to
become the first horse ever to accrue 19 Hong
Kong wins - he currently sits alongside Silent
Witness (El Moxie) and Super Win (Piccadilly
Lane) on 18 victories. “He’s had a little bit more
time between runs this time than what he has
previously and obviously he’s had a stable
change as well. He’s got a different training
regime but the horse seems to be really well,”
regular rider Zac Purton said of the former
John Moore trainee, who is now prepared by
David Hayes. “His trial was good and we know
he goes good fresh, he’s got a good gate albeit
a tricky one but we’re going there with some
confidence – let’s see if he can do it four years
on the bounce.”

Five for ExosphereDarley’s Exosphere (Lonhro) sired his fifth
individual winner and first in the northern
hemisphere when Spherical (2 f ex Selfsame
by Dansili) got off the mark at the seventh
time of asking when landing a Le Mans
claimer over 1400 metres yesterday. The
Andrew Hollinshead-trained juvenile beat
Kiss Pom (Pomellato) and Captain Lougie
(Captain Chop) by two lengths and a short
head. Spherical is a half sister to Hateya
(Footstepsinthesand), a Listed winner in
Sweden on Sunday. Exosphere stands for a
fee of $16,500 (inc GST) at Kelvinside in 2020.
13 for TerritoriesDarley stallions enjoyed more success in
France yesterday when Numero Dix (2 c ex
Timely Words by Galileo) provided Territories
(Invincible Spirit) with his 13th individual
winner. The Andre Fabre-trained newcomer
made a winning debut when taking out a
Chantilly maiden over 1200 metres by four
lengths. Lozen (Showcasing) finished second,
with Make Gold (Mayson) another length
and a half back in third. Territories stands at
Kelvinside for a fee of $11,000 in 2020.
120 for Cape CrossThe late Cape Cross (Green Desert) sired his
120th individual stakes winner when Walton
Street (6 g ex Brom Felinity ex Encosta De
Lago) got his head in front for the first time
since February 2018 when landing yesterday’s
Godolphin Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f) at a blustery
Newmarket. The Charlie Appleby-trained six-
year-old, who was posting a fourth win in 14
starts, beat Aloe Vera (Invincible Spirit) by a
length and a half, with Laafy (Noble Mission) a
further five and a half lengths adrift in third. A
Darley homebred, Walton Street is the fifth foal
out of Matriarch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner
Brom Felinity (Encosta De Lago) who herself
is a sister to Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner Delago Brom, out of the Group 2 winner
Brompton Cross (El Qahira).
129 for Invincible Spirit1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) runner-up Cloak Of
Spirits (3 f ex Pivotique by Pivotal) registered
the first win of her three-year-old career and
in the process provided Invincible Spirit
(Green Desert) with his 129th individual
stakes winner when taking out the Rosemary
Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Newmarket yesterday.
The Richard Hannon-trained filly benefitted
from the drop in grade as she beat market
leader Bounce The Blues (Excelebration) by
half a length as a well backed 4-1 chance.
Tomorrow’s Dream (Oasis Dream) was a
further three lengths away in third. Now
the winner of two of her nine starts, the
homebred Cloak Of Spirits is the first foal out
of the Pivotal (Polar Falcon) mare Pivotique,
who herself is out of the winner Suba (Seeking
The Gold) who is closely related to the great
Dubawi (Dubai Millennium). Invincible
Spirit stood at the Irish National Stud for a fee
of €100,000 (approx. AUD$165,500) in 2020.
UK: Isabella Giles lands Group 2 prize The progressive Isabella Giles provided Haunui
Farm shuttler Belardo (Lope De Vega) with
his most notable success to date when pulling
clear of her rivals late to land yesterday’s
Rockfel Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Newmarket. The
Clive Cox-trained juvenile was lining up off
the back of a seven-length romp in Group 3
company at Glorious Goodwood on her most
recent start but she proved that success was no
fluke with a commanding two-length victory
of her nearest pursuer Nazuna (Kodiac). Alba
Rose (Muhaarar) finished a further three and
a quarter lengths away in a well stretched out
field. Isabella Giles was winning for the fourth
time in five starts and was given quotes of 14-1
for next year’s 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) after
this latest success. Belardo stands at Haunui
Farm for a fee of NZ$10,000 (plus GST).

UK: Kameko back at HQ with a bangA return to the scene of his finest moment saw
Kameko (Kitten’s Joy) get back to winning ways
yesterday when he took out Newmarket’s Joel
Stakes (Gr 2, 1m). The Andrew Balding-trained
2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) hero had been out of
luck since his Classic victory but he claimed
some notable scalps when responding well to
the urgings of his rider Oisin Murphy to register
a fourth win in nine starts. Crossing the line, the
three-year-old was half a length in front of the
running-on Regal Reality (Intello), with Benbatl
(Dubawi), winner of the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1,
2000m) in 2018, the same distance away in third.
UK: Consistent Antonia De Vega strikes again A move for home fully two furlongs out by
Harry Bentley proved to be a decisive one as
Antonia De Vega (Lope De Vega) added to
her tally of wins with a victory in yesterday’s
Princess Royal Stakes (Gr 3, 1 m 4f) at
Newmarket. The consistent four-year-old, who
is trained by Ralph Beckett, made it five wins
in eight starts, four of those successes coming
in stakes company, when just getting the better
of favourite Alpinista (Frankel) by half a length.
Sea Of Faith (Sea The Stars) finished another 14
lengths away in third as the front two stretched
well clear of the remainder late on.
Ireland: Champers Elysees bought by top Japanese ownerThe progressive Champers Elysees (Elzaam)
is to remain in the care of Johnny Murtagh
in Ireland following a private sale which has
seen the Group 1-winning filly snapped up by
leading Japanese owner Teruya Yoshida. The
Coolmore Matron Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) scorer at
this month's Irish Champions Weekend went
unsold at €95,000 at the Horses in Training
Sale last October but has gone unbeaten in four
starts this season, earning €220,660 (approx,
AUD$365,000) in prize-money.
France: Arc field takes shape
Europe’s star stayer Stradivarius (Sea The Stars)
and Persian King (Kingman), the brilliant
winner of the Prix du Moulin (Gr 1, 1600m),
have both been given the go ahead to take their
chance in next week’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
(Gr 1, 2400m). A trip to Paris looks to be off the
agenda for Goldolphin’s Ghaiyyath (Dubawi)
though, with trainer Charlie Appleby instead
favouring either Ascot’s Champion Stakes (Gr
1, 1m 2f) on October 17 or the Breeders’ Cup
Turf (Gr 1, 12f) at Keeneland on November 7
with his stable star.

“This was our main target,” Chris Meagher
told Racing.com. “We’ll just regroup and see.
She holds a nom for the Manikato and for the
(Darley) Sprint. We did pencil in that race
on Derby Day (the Begonia Belle Stakes) but
we might get 69 kilograms. We’ll just see how
things pan out and how she pulls up. It’s just a
relief to get through tonight.”
He continued: “She’s amazing fresh.
Tonight she was just on point, she'd done
everything right and we couldn't have been
happier. She's a deadset old 10-year-old gelding
at home but as soon as she bounces out of the
machines, she's a completely different animal.
"We came here as confident as you can
be going into a Group 1 race so to pull it off is
absolutely amazing. To win a race of this calibre
is a huge honour, I’m just rapt for everyone
involved."
Purchased by the Meaghers for $60,000
out of the Eureka Stud draft at the 2017 Inglis
Classic Yearling Sale, Pippie has now won
$1,201,950 from just 12 starts.
“She’s just a ripper of a sprinter, Pippie. And
the mother, well she’s turning into a very good
buy for us now,” said Eureka’s Scott McAlpine,
who purchased Pippie’s dam Coupe Express
(Ne Coupez Pas) for $26,000 at the 2015 Inglis

Written Tycoon (Iglesia) - that foal was Pippie.
"She’s [Coupe Express] actually booked in

so hopefully we’ll have a full brother or sister to
Pippie on the ground next year.’’

Tasmania takes Stocks with Mystic Journey
On a weekend where rags to riches stories
are dominating the headlines - take Golden Rose
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) odds-on favourite Rothfire
(Rothesay) as a case in point - one of Australia’s
most famous leading ladies returned to the
spotlight as Mystic Journey (5 m Needs Further -
White Gold by Colombia) bounced back to win
the Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) last night.
Purchased for just $11,000 at the 2017
Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale, Mystic
Journey won 11 of her first 14 starts, including
triumphs in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1,
1600m) and the inaugural All-Star Mile (1600m)
in her three-year-old season. She returned a
winner in her first start at four in last year’s P B
Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), but she had not
been successful in six starts since.

Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m)
heroine Pippie (5 m Written
Tycoon - Coupe Express by Ne
Coupez Pas) added a second
top-level feature to her record when she burnt
off her rivals to win the Moir Stakes (Gr 1,
1000m) at Moonee Valley last night, but the
world’s richest turf event appears to be off the
radar for the speedy mare.
Set alight by Damian Lane from the gates,
the John and Chris Meagher-trained Pippie
led her rivals with ease, clocking blistering
sectionals as she went along.
Lane put three lengths on Pippie’s chasers
on the turn and, although they steadily pulled
ground off her, she could not be reeled in.
Despite weakening noticeably late, Pippie
had three-quarters of a length to spare over
Godolphin’s dual Group 1 winner Trekking
(Street Cry) in second with a further head to
Adelaide mare Bella Vella (Commands), who
just filled third in a photo over the hard-charging
Brooklyn Hustle (Starspangledbanner) in fourth.
"I've never been on one quicker early, just
how clean she is from the stalls and how easily
she does it," Lane told Racing.com. "You just
give her some rein out of the barriers and then
lay on her neck and she does the rest for you.
"I actually thought I was in a little bit of
trouble on the corner when she came off the
bridle but when I asked for her maximum effort
she really dug in again."
While the last three winners of the Moir
Stakes - She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain),
Viddora (I Am Invincible) and Nature Strip
(Nicconi) - all gained berths in the $15 million
The Everest (1200m), it is unlikely that Pippie
will follow in their footsteps, especially with
plenty of speed already engaged.
Instead, the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) -
once again at Moonee Valley - and Flemington’s
Darley Sprint Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) are more
likely options.

Having performed below par in her first
two starts this season in the P B Lawrence
Stakes and then the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m), trainer Adam Trinder elected to take a
chance by sending Mystic Journey back across
Bass Strait to his Devonport base, instead
of leaving her at Peter Moody’s Pakenham
stables, as had been the case throughout her
spring preparation to date. She only returned to
Victoria on Wednesday.
Mystic Journey looked far from a winning
prospect as they reached the school, but ever so
slowly and steadily, she inched into the race bit by bit.
Favourite Perfect Jewel (Redoute’s Choice) dashed
clear, but Mystic Journey wore her down to win by a
head. One More Try (Dane Shadow) finished third,
four and a half lengths from the winner.
“I’m really happy to ride a winner for
Adam,” rider Luke Currie told Racing.com.
“We’ve been mates for a long time, we used to
ride in the hunt clubs when we were kids. Our
families go a long way back.
“It’s a really good effort, because when these
mares lose their form, to come back is difficult -
and especially still in that prep, too, usually they’d
have to go out and start again. But he’s taken her
back and he said to me he thought she was back
as good as ever and he’s spot on.”
Whether it was the Mystic Journey -
stable name Betty - of old is debatable, but
her popularity cannot be understated; even
racecaller Terry Bailey let out a cry of “Go Betty,
go!” in the concluding stages.
Mystic Journey has multiplied her purchase
price many times over, taking her earnings to
$3,869,100 with last night’s victory.
Comeback king Moody sweeps Stutt
Peter Moody may not have been guiding
Mystic Journey last night, but the champion
trainer still was able to celebrate his first stakes
win in almost four years when Glenfiddich
(3 c Fastnet Rock - Nothin But A Dream) took
out the Bill Stutt Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) in easy
fashion.
And the man most famous for guiding Black
Caviar (Bel Esprit) to 25 straight wins hopes to
return to Moonee Valley in a month in a bid to
add a first Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) to his record.
Twice Group 1-placed in his short career
to date - once at two when runner-up in the
Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), the other
when first-up at three and in his first start for
Moody when third in the Memsie Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m) - Glenfiddich stamped himself as
Victoria’s best Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
contender with his victory last night.
Allowed to stroll on in the lead by Luke
Nolen, Glenfiddich never looked in much
trouble at any stage, racing clear for a two-length
success. Cherry Tortoni (Night Of Thunder)
produced a nice lead-up for races over further
with a closing second, while Holyfield (I Am
Invincible) was a head away in third.
Moody said that part of the reason for
heading to the Stutt was to give Glenfiddich
some experience at Moonee Valley with hopes
of chasing a bigger goal in the future.
"We dream - he's a very exciting colt so after
we win the Caulfield Guineas we might come
back here for a Cox Plate," Moody told Racing.
com, with his traditional laconic approach.
"I think he'll improve rapidly, he's a
nice colt. We didn't have to run prior to the
Guineas but that gave him a look at the Valley
in the hope that he could be back here in a
month's time.”
Glenfiddich boasts an international
pedigree, being closely related to Magic
Millions Guineas (RL, 1400m) winner Eleven
Eleven (Fastnet Rock) as well as champion
Venezuelan mares Endrygol (Evolutionist) and
Piacenza (League Of Nations). Further back,
it is also the family of Cox Plate runner-up
Criterion (Sebring).
Bred by Edinburgh Park’s Ian Smith
and purchased for $200,000 at the 2019
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale
by his former trainer Robbie Griffiths in
partnership with Peter Ford Thoroughbreds,
Glenfiddich has now taken his prize-money
to $406,750.

Galayel good but faces Caulfield Cup mountain
On a night filled with stakes action, Al
Galayel (7 h Zoffany - Glympse by Spectrum)
stamped himself as a legitimate Caulfield Cup
(Gr 1, 2400m) contender with an emphatic win
in the JRA Cup (Gr 3, 2040m).
However, he will require the help of Racing
Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter to
make the field.
Al Galayel’s two-and-a-quarter-length win
over Plein Ciel (Mamool) helped the Ciaron
Maher and David Eustace-prepared import to
pass the first ballot clause for the Caulfield Cup
(Gr 1, 2400m).
However, he remains stranded in the
mid-50s and even a decent penalty would be
unlikely to improve his position significantly.
The last JRA Cup winner to earn a penalty
was Real Love (Desert King) in 2016; she earned
a 0.5-kilogram rise and went on to finish fifth to
Maher’s Jameka (Myboycharlie) in the Caulfield
Cup.
The other option is to contest the Coongy
Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) on the Wednesday
before the Caulfield Cup, with the race now a
last-ditch opportunity to qualify for the field. It
is an option that Eustace says remains possible.
“He’s a credit to our team to get him back
as he had an injury and had a long time off,”
Eustace told Racing.com. “We’ll look at the
country cups for him and maybe the Coongy.
He’s still in the Caulfield Cup, so we’d have to
have a look at that.”
Swats That swots Scarborough rivals
The Scarborough Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) has
a proven record of producing top fillies and
the win of the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained
Swats That (3 f Shamus Award - Is It A Mosquito
by Bel Esprit) last night suggests she will have
every chance of enhancing that honour roll.
Swats That, who was named ANZ
Bloodstock News’ Maiden Of The Week after her
debut performance to win the Vobis Gold Rush
(1000m) at Bendigo, was much the best of the
field, with her two-length margin over Highly
Discreet (Street Boss) and Dirty Thoughts (So
You Think) arguably not a true reflection of her
dominance.
“She was three-wide and had no peace
whatsoever and was very, very strong,” Troy
Corstens told Racing.com, saying that the
Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on Derby
Day is her primary target. “It’s nice to see her do
that because we have all put in a lot of work and
we always thought she was pretty good.”
Swats That produced some level of
retribution for her sire Shamus Award (Snitzel),
who produced one of the runs of his career
when he was beaten by the smallest of margins
on this night in 2013 in the Bill Stutt Stakes.
Bred and raced by Melbourne cardiologist
Dr Adam Gay, Swats That has now taken her
earnings to $294,700 after just four starts.

Moir winner Pippie (Written Tycoon) is
unlikely to follow in the footsteps of past Moir
victors She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain),
Viddora (I Am Invincible) and Nature Strip
(Nicconi) as an Everest contender, especially
with so much speed already engaged through
the likes of Nature Strip and Farnan (Not A

She is instead more likely to stay in
Melbourne and head towards the Manikato
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), where she will appear
to enjoy a similar passage - if not easier - than
she did last night, before she tackles the Darley
Sprint Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) on the final day of
the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Instead, one must look behind her and the
most obvious statement was made by Trekking
(Street Cry), with the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr
1, 1400m) and The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m)
winner making plenty of ground late.

unfilled, it leaves them with a dilemma: do they

Neil Werrett and James Harron would all
surely be happy to end up with the Godolphin
“second-stringer”.
A lot will depend on the Golden Rose Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) and the Golden Pendant Stakes
(Gr 2, 1400m) at Rosehill today, especially with
five slot-holders yet to select a runner after The
Star secured Behemoth (All Too Hard) earlier
this week.
Golden Rose entrant Peltzer (So You Think)
remains a leading contender to take the Coolmore
slot, with his main rival likely to be Fasika (So You
Think), who will put her case forward in next
Saturday’s Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).
Chris Waller Racing’s slot is most likely to
be filled by Golden Pendant favourite Haut
Brion Her (Zoustar) should she reproduce her
first-up victory in the Sheraco Stakes (Gr 2,
1200m) today. As suggested last week, if she
isn’t selected, it wouldn’t surprise to see his
owners look outside the stable as they have
done in the past.
Max Whitby and Neil Werrett have given
no public indications
about who they
are interested in
selecting for their
slot, but with the
pair owning Golden
Pendant runner Jen
Rules (Redoute’s
Choice) and Werrett
also having a share
in Masked Crusader
(Toronado), perhaps
a big effort by one
of those two today
could see them entering discussions.
That leaves James Harron, the inaugural-
winning slot-holder in 2017 after he secured
Redzel (Snitzel). On paper, he may have the
pick of what’s left: Godolphin’s reserve, any
of the non-selected Golden Rose runners,
even horses that have seemingly fallen by the
wayside like Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
victor Alligator Blood (All Too Hard).
While it may seem like all the leading
contenders have been taken, the win of Yes Yes
Yes (Rubick) last year shows that a late decision
can be beneficial.
The Golden Rose marks base camp; from
here, all paths lead to Randwick’s summit. Who
will prevail in the $15 million The Everest? Stay

After the briefest of breaks, the
yearling auction season resumed
in Doncaster on Thursday as a
£50,000 (approx. AUD$90,250)
son of Footstepsinthesand (Giant’s Causeway)
topped day one of the relocated Goffs
Sportsman's Sale.
The top lot was consigned by Rockfield Farm
and went the way of Kevin Ross, whose purchase
was made on behalf of Paul and Clare Rooney.
The colt is a brother to the smart two-year-old
Star Of Orion, who was last seen finishing a short-
head second in the valuable Tattersalls Ireland
Super Auction Sale Stakes (6.5f).
Ross said: "He's just a lovely type of horse.
He's got a great action and the full-brother
looks a good horse, he was a bit unlucky at the
Curragh, and the dam had a nice rating too.
He'll go to Richie McGrath's in Middleham to
be broken in before any decisions are made
about trainers."
On the relocated Sportsman's Sale, the
agent said: "It's a bit different because it's in
Doncaster, but all the usual people are here and
Goffs have done a great job in getting the sales
to go ahead. All the sales companies deserve a
lot of credit for the work they've put in recently."
It was a day for realism among vendors, with
plenty satisfied simply to be able to move stock
on, although Mitch Barry from Rockfield Farm
was plainly delighted with his consignment's
session-topping exploits.
He bred the strapping colt with bloodstock
agent Barry Lynch from Harpist, (Danehill
Dancer) who won two races and achieved a
peak Racing Post Rating of 90 while under the
care of David Wachman.
"Myself and Barry Lynch purchased the
mare privately," said Barry. "We sent her to
'Footsteps' for her first cover and she had a
colt who we sold at Fairyhouse last year to Alex
Elliott for €38,000. He went to Ralph Beckett and
looks like a very good horse. We got the update
just before the sale, which was a big boost.
"This horse has been very straightforward
to prepare, just like the brother was last year."
Asked what prompted the decision to send
Harpist, who has a Gustav Klimt (Galileo) foal
at foot and is carrying to Ribchester (Iffraaj),
to Coolmore's Castlehyde Stud stalwart
Footstepsinthesand, Barry said: "I actually used
to work at Castlehyde and just love the horse.
"I was confident he'd sell well but I wasn't
sure he'd go that far, just because of how things
are as trade generally has been very sticky."

BBA Ireland man back in action
Michael Donohoe's eye for a yearling has been
well advertised of late as the BBA Ireland man was
responsible for selecting the likes of Phoenix Stakes
(Gr 1, 6f) hero Lucky Vega (Lope De Vega) and
Cheveley Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) hopeful Miss Amulet
(Sir Prancealot) during 2019's sales.
He dipped into the market on Thursday
when going to £47,000 (approx. AUD$85,000)
for the Mehmas (Acclamation) colt out of
Crafty Notion (Viking Ruler) bred by Reginald
Roberts. The dam, a half-sister to 2,000 Guineas
(Gr 1, 1m) winner Cockney Rebel (Val Royal),
has already produced the Listed-winning Just
Sherry (Intense Focus).
"The sire has done exceptionally well and I
thought this was a particularly nice colt," said
Donohoe. "He's got a super action and a great
temperament and looks like a nice precocious
individual. The mare has bred a stakes winner
already and it's a tough, hardy family.
"He's been bought for a client from the
Middle East. The horse will come back to
Ireland to be broken and then he'll more than
likely go into training in Britain. The owner will
decide on a trainer later on."
The colt was consigned on behalf of
his breeder by Kilmoney Cottage Stud. The
operation's Michael Carty said: "The sire is very
good and he's a good model so everything fell
into place. I've had him for about eight weeks
and he was a very nice horse to prep."
The Sportsman's Sale would traditionally
take place after the flagship Orby Sale at Kildare
Paddocks, but Carty said once the sale had
been relocated there was no question about
this particular lot taking up his entry.
"Expenses have been up but you just
have to try to balance these things out and we
thought he'd stand out at this sale," he said. "He
was scheduled to come to this sale originally so
we said we'd follow through with that plan."
Mehmas mania continues
The progeny of
Mehmas proved popular
with buyers throughout
the session, and with good
reason with the Tally-
Ho Stud stallion having
supplied 32 European
winners, including
Method, Minzaal and
Supremacy. That trio head
the market for the Middle
Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at
Newmarket today.
Eddie Lynam can look forward to training a
daughter of this year's leading first-season sire
after his daughter Amy struck a winning bid of
£44,000 (approx. AUD$79,500) for the filly out
of Faddwa (Arcano) offered by Grange Hill Stud.
"I can't lay much claim to buying her as
she's for dad," said Lynam, who has been
supplying buyers and sellers with photos
and videos to promote their lots through her
marketing agency.
"He couldn't be here but I sent him
photos and videos. He couldn't get anything
at Fairyhouse as the nice individuals made
plenty, but this filly is a nice individual too
and obviously the stallion has gone above and
beyond this year. She's bred on the same cross
as Supremacy.
"This industry can be quite fickle and it isn't
just the stallion game that's very fashion driven,
but hopefully she'll be another fast filly who can
showcase what dad can do."
On the subject of using multimedia to
attract buyers, Lynam said: "The photos and
videos are definitely a help for absent buyers,
even if it's just a way of helping buyers form a
shortlist they can then give to someone who is
able to inspect horses first hand."
The filly, whose dam is a half-sister to the
Listed-winning Heart Of Fire (Mujadil) and
the Group 3-placed Unsinkable (Verglas), was
offered by Grange Hill Stud, whose Mark Hanly
said: "She was one of my stars this year.
"She's very genuine, her temperament is
great, she's just a fabulous filly. We sold the
mare as a yearling for €30,000 and bought
her back after she'd won for Roger Varian for
20,000gns."

If recent history is any guide, then
Western Australian galloper Gatting
faces a monumental task to repeat his
Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1
Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s
Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
Not only does the son of Hard Spun have
to defy the usually huge odds against longshot
winners repeating, he’d become just the third
horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25
have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)
and Northerly (2002) have been successful.
Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee
Stakes winners has managed to win another race
during the spring which is verily dumbfounding
and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status
in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has
six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres
in about as many weeks.
In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes
— won this year by Homesman — has been a
much better portent of things to come through
the balance of the spring carnival.
Six of the past ten Feehan winners have
won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions
include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,
who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic
Consol who didn’t race again that year.
Four of the past five Underwood Stakes
winners have come via the Feehan including,
of course, Homesman who won last year after
finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and
he looks a superior horse in 2019.
Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won
the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare
Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they
saddle another four-year-old, this time male,
in The Chosen One — who looks the principal
danger to Homesman.
The follow-up form of major race winners
is something of a fascination and generally less
impressive than you might think. Examining
the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is
interesting.
Begood Toya Mother was a fast and
spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes
albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing
him with some unexpected cover.
Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be
spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted
Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,
is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in
the past ten years] to have had an immediate
break and he returned to run second to Black
Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then
went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.
Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the
only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten
years, to score again that spring - taking the
Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy
Handicap respectively.
Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3
Naturalism Stakes has produced just two
subsequent springtime winners in the past
decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group
1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won
the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in
the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off
a remarkable training feat by
managing to rejuvenate the
once retired Black Heart Bart
(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and
second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three
years on from his first victory in the Caulfield
feature.
Western Australian Smith took over the
Warrnambool stables once owned by Black
Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir
and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt
to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.
Smith conceded that he was not overly
confident that Black Heart Bart would make
it back to the races until an encouraging
Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.
"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but
then he trialled well," Smith said.
"His first race was good and then his second
run was plain, but we thought getting him up to
the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't
be chasing all the time.
"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING
Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s
Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking
despite being last and a long way off the leader
Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but
the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"
Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little
bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer
Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart
sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow
margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his
first trip away and this was his first time racing
the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I
think it's important if I can just keep him in his
right grade I can keep him progressing along.
We won't aim too high I don't think at this
stage. And I think if we come back this time
next year we're going to have a bona fide Group
1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last
year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a
short neck.
Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)
was one and a half lengths away in third.
The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A
Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).
"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was
warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.
"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're
going to be in this'."
It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr
1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago
after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).
An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was
delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.
It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which
almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six
months after being seriously injured last October.
"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like
getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.
"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my
broken neck it's been a long road.
"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as
rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.
"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.
"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about
him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.
"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he
could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his
claim for a potential shot at The
Everest (1200m) when silencing
his doubters with an impressive
victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at
The Valley last night.
The Chris Waller-trained gelding
harboured plenty of criticism after his last
start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)
when he failed to settle on the front end.
However, he showed he is a bona fide Group
1 horse with an impressive win in the $1
million sprint.
Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip
began well from the inside barrier and was able
to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.
The track record holder over the course

around the turn and was able to hold off a
gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)
closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian
McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further
back in fourth.
Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative
attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.
"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism
with him than we ever got with
another certain horse [Winx]
who was probably our last Group
1 winner here.
"That's racing, everyone has
got their opinions. He's a good
horse and today he stepped away
well. James didn't panic he just
got there gradually and it was a
good race.
"You think punters get
frustrated, well owning a horse
and training a horse when you're
running in these types of races,
it's a bitter pill to take when you
don't quite get it right.
"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had
something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I
did everything wrong."
Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at
Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci
Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race
will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week
later.
"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just
see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The
Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."
Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race
while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over
the mare's performance.
McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,
two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.
"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.
"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the
race."

Then followed: Brooklyn Hustle (AUS), Diamond Effort (AUS), Bold
Star (AUS), Ashlor (AUS), Hey Doc (AUS), Hanseatic (AUS), Jungle
Edge (AUS), Fabergino (AUS) & Bella Nipotina (AUS), last.
Analysis: In a repeat of her victory in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m)
in February, brilliant mare and noted first-up performer Pippie took
out her second Group 1 win in stylish fashion, resuming here. After a
quick beginning, she went straight to the front and then ran along at
a fast tempo, comfortably holding off her opposition in the straight to
win impressively. Trekking settled in eighth place on the rails from his
good barrier (2), took a split nearing the turn, got through to third on
straightening and then ran on nicely to take second. Bella Vella enjoyed
a good trip in third place on the rails from her inside barrier (1), took
an inside run to be in a challenging position on turning for home and then
battled well for third after appearing to have had every chance. Brooklyn
Hustle raced in last place, got along the inner coming to the turn, went to
fourth on straightening and then fought on nicely to hold that position to
the post, with Diamond Effort running on quite well from midfield for (2
lengths) fifth. The favourite Fabergino raced well below her best, never
looked a threat and faded to finish second-last in the 12-runner field. [KB]

Then followed: Lunar Fox (AUS), Crown Mint (AUS), Ironedge (AUS) &
Alcyone (AUS), last.
Analysis: A last start, fresh up Group 1 third against the older horses
saw Glenfiddich installed as favourite here. He took control early and
won well, his second victory (maiden stakes) at start 11. In front within
the first 100m he was unpressured past the 1000m, bowling along
comfortably. He maintained a length lead but approaching the 400m
the lead shrunk to a half length at which point Luke Nolen pressed the
button. Rounding into the straight he went clear but passing the 100m
went further in front to put the race beyond doubt, two lengths. Cherry
Tortoni sat sixth of the seven runners past the 1000m, still sixth yet closer
inside the 600m, went widest rounding into the straight then ran quite
well without threatening the winner. Holyfield sat second most of the
journey, tried to pressure the winner at the 400m, kept at it from the top
of the straight but lost second over the final 50m. Lunar Fox was hard
ridden in third turning in and battled on for a distant fourth. [LJ]

Then followed: Spanish Reef (AUS), Princess Jenni (NZ), Aristia (AUS),
Benitoite (AUS), Realm Of Flowers (AUS), Shrouded In Mist (AUS),
Greysful Glamour (AUS) & My Gold Bracelet (NZ), last.
Analysis: The Group 1 winner Mystic Journey appreciated the
conditions of this Group 2 mares’ feature and recaptured some of her
best form at her third run this preparation in scoring here, her first
victory since taking out the P. B. Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at
Caulfield in August last year. She settled towards the tail of the field from
her awkward barrier (9) and deep, improved (wide with cover) from the
700m, went to second (out deep) at the turn and then finished best to
score a very good win. The favourite Perfect Jewel settled midfield and
wide, moved up nicely from the 700m, looked the winner when she took
the lead on straightening but could not hold off the late-closing winner
before fighting on well for second. One More Try settled in last place
and remained there until taken deep approaching the turn. She then
ran on quite well to take third in a photo from Spanish Reef who was in
fifth place, between runners, but under riding coming to the turn before
rallying in the straight to finish fourth. [KB]

Then followed: Money In My Pocket (AUS), Raison D’etre (AUS),
Supreme Idea (AUS), Pretty Rossa (AUS), Mileva (AUS) & Diala (AUS),
last.
Analysis: Improving on her last start Listed second at Flemington two
weeks back, Swats That put up a nice maiden stakes winning effort after
sitting three wide the entire race. She was well away but was passed and
drifted to sit a close sixth early before moving up three wide at the 800m
to sit a length off the lead. Still a length back at the 600m she gained and
rounding into the straight formed a line of three, took over soon after and
kept going strongly to the line by two lengths for her second win in four
starts. Highly Discreet sat two lengths last until the 600m, tacked onto
the field then went widest from the 400m. In the straight she finished
very well to nab second at the post. Dirty Thoughts sat second (one
out) to the 400m, went up to share the lead and kept on doggedly, losing
second late. Money In My Pocket was fourth turning in then battled
away to hold that spot. [LJ]

Analysis: In the best form of his 26 race career, Al Galayel was much too
strong over three Derby winners here for his third win in a row, ninth
in total and maiden stakes success. He sat a close third, two out with a
circuit to run before dropping into fourth, one out and one back inside
the 1400m. He remained quite handy past the 1000m but accelerated
quickly from the 600m to be four wide rounding into the straight. He took
over before they straightened and inside the 200m booted clear and was
in total command, away by two and a quarter lengths at the line. Plein

Ciel sat fourth (rails) past the 1000m, was still there at the 600m, hugged
the fence rounding into the straight in second and kept going without
endangering the winner. Levendi led them to the 400m, was caught near
the 200m and battled away fairly for third, while Mirage Dancer finished
on for fourth.[LJ]

VERDICT None of the five can be ruled out. The vote goes to NEWMANDATE, who improved again when showing courage aplenty
in a Listed race at Doncaster last time and just about sets the standard on that goodeffort. He should stay 1m fine and is likely to improve again, though to be fair thatcomment applies to all five runners. Cobh is next best ahead of unbeaten Group 3winner Gear Up. [Mel Cullinan]

VERDICT An open renewal which may go to MISS AMULET, who hasprogressed well and sets the standard on her last-time-out
success in the Lowther at York. Umm Kulthum, third at York and an improvedGroup 3 winner at Ayr since, may be next best ahead of another highly progressivefilly in Happy Romance. Unbeaten Dandalla will be a big danger to all if back tothe level of her runaway win at Ascot in June but she wasn’t quite as good whenwinning on the July course last time. [Mel Cullinan]

VERDICT A fascinating and well-up-to-scratch renewal with four Group 2winners and one Group 1 winner in the field. The top-flight
winner, Lucky Vega, in particular commands a deal of respect but preference is forMETHOD, who picked off a subsequent Group winner with ease when taking aListed race at Newbury in July on just his second start last time. That performancestrongly suggested that this colt has Group 1 potential, a point he can prove here.Supremacy can take minor honours and is third best. [Mel Cullinan]

without the benefit of a run coming from Ballydoyle. Hamdan Al Maktoum has twointriguing runners, Monassib having achieved more but Wuqood, a Dubawi out ofa Blandford Stakes winner, could be anything too. [Johnny Ward]
