The Peter and Paul Snowden stable will have two runners in Saturday’s Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Randwick, a $150,000 stakes

race that received ten entries yesterday.

The Snowdens nominated last start winner Gold Symphony (Reward For Effort) and five-year-old Princefamous (Fast ‘N’ Famous), a first up winner in November, for the Listed race, for which nominations have been extended until 11am today.

Among the pair’s potential rivals are Group One performer Shiraz (Zariz) and the Kim Waugh-trained stablemate Oxford Poet (Dylan Thomas), the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Ecuador (High Chaparral) and the Peter Robl-trained Ninth Legion (Fastnet Rock).

Co-trainer Paul Snowden told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday that Gold Symphony, a dual Group Three winner at three, had returned to his better form this preparation as a result of being gelded.

The four-year-old won over 1400 metres at Warwick Farm on 7 January in a field of four, defeating stakes winner Imposing Lass (Makfi), who subsequently went on to win the Belle Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m), and the in-form Girl Sunday (Encosta De Lago).

“He hadn’t won for a little while and that was only a small field I know, but I think he’s going to get a lot out of that race mentally, he’ll get a bit of confidence out of it,” Snowden said.

“It’s his first preparation back as a gelding, so who knows, and we won’t know until after Saturday, but he’s got his tail up so to speak and he’s got a seat back in the winner’s stall and it’s good to see the horse back in a bit of form.

“He met a couple of in-form horses and he won well.”Stablemate Princefamous, meanwhile, won first up on 19 November

over 1100 metres in a Benchmark 93 Handicap when defeating Kuro (Denman) and Press Report (Written Tycoon). He then ran third in the Starlight Stakes (Listed, 1100m) behind Kuro on 3 December and finished 11th last start in the Canterbury Classic (Listed, 1200m) on 31 December.

“He drew (12) and he got used up early and that’s what obviously brought him undone,” Snowden said of Princefamous’s last start performance.

“He drew wide in the Takeover Target at Gosford last Friday, so we scratched him from that for this race and he’s going very well.

“He won first up and then ran third to Kuro when he had excuses and he had excuses again the other day.”

Trainer Gerald Ryan has Dances On Stars (Snitzel), a seven-year-old gelding who has not won since May 2014, entered for the Carrington Stakes, a race the son of Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) won three years ago however, Ryan is yet to decide whether the horse will run.

Dances On Stars has been placed once from five starts this preparation when third over 1500 metres at Eagle Farm on 10 December.

"I've only just come back from the Gold Coast so I haven't had a real good look at the possible field yet," Ryan said.

"I haven't seen him for ten days so I'll see how he is in the morning and make a decision on whether he runs this week or not.

"He's a good old horse but he's getting hard to place now."Meanwhile, Snowden Racing, who has support from some of

Australasia’s biggest thoroughbred investors, were also active at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, purchasing three Lots under their own banner.

The Snowdens purchased Lot 186, a Sizzling (Snitzel) half-brother to stakes-placed Old Trieste (Hinchinbrook) for $200,000 and a Medaglia

d’Oro (El Prado) filly out of a half-sister to Listed winner Meidung (Bernardini) for $200,000 as Lot 197.

They also purchased Lot 775, a Snitzel half-brother to Group One winner Appearance (Commands) and Listed winner Maxcareri (Commands), for $450,000.

“We bought three nice horses for stable clients and ourselves,” Snowden said yesterday.

“Our business is predominantly with China Horse Club and James Harron Bloodstock, but it’s also good to get a couple of horses of our own to usually have family and close friends in.”

Snowden said the advantage of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale being so early in the year enabled them to start breaking the horses in early and give them every chance to perform as early two-year-olds.

“It’s a good sale to be buying at, that’s for sure. The results (at Magic Millions) speak for themselves and it’s an early running sale, so the yearlings are up there, they are ready to go and you can get them back, spell them and get your hands on them early,” he said.

Guard Of Honour Entered At RandwickLightly raced Guard Of Honour (Northern Meteor) looks set to line up in the Wilkes Quality (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday having not been sighted since he ran fourth behind Spright (Hinchinbrook) in the Brian Crowley Stakes (Listed, 1200m) on 15 October. had good opinion of the horse. I think he's a really nice horse. He's a bit mentally immature but physically he's always been all right,” said Lees. "Mentally he wasn't all there yet and hopefully this will be the preparation when the penny drops with him. So this looks a nice option to start him off in."

Stayer O’Lonera To Resume At ValleyThe Cindy Alderson-trained O’Lonera (O’Lonhro) looks set resume in a Benchmark 84 (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The four-year-old gelding has not raced since he finished fourth behind Almandin (Monsun)

in the Harry White Classic (Listed, 2400m) in September, having taken out a 2000 metre handicap at Caulfield in July, the VOBIS Gold Stayers (2400m) later that month and a Benchmark 84 (2000m) in August earlier that preparation. “He seems to be in great order," Alderson said. "Obviously he's never been effective at much shorter than 2000 metres so I would expect the race on Saturday to be too sharp for him, but you've got to kick off somewhere." Defcon To Trial

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained three-year-old Defcon (Choisir), a dual Group Three winner, will have his first barrier trial this campaign at Rosehill today. The Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winning colt will run in heat 11 over 900 metres today. “He’s coming along well and will have a click up (today) in preparation for his return,” Paul Snowden told ANZ Bloodstock News. “We’re not sure where that will be yet, but we will see how he comes through the trial first, but he’s come up in good order.” Click here to view the Rosehill barrier trial fields.

Knee Surgery For Winning RupertBeaten Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) favourite Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) will undergo surgery to remove a bone chip in a knee. The Bjorn Baker-trained colt suffered the first defeat of his career when he finished fourth behind Flying Jess (Hinchinbrook) at the Gold Coast on Saturday and Baker told the Queensland stewards yesterday that X-rays had revealed the problem and the colt would have surgery later this week.

Light Spring Help Flying Artie And Extreme ChoiceTrainer Mick Price believes that the Group One-winners Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) and Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) will benefit from having a light spring campaign when they tackle the major autumn sprint races in Melbourne and Sydney this autumn. "I think that's the benefit of only having two runs in the spring because when they are spring three-year-old colts, they are still growing and if you have a long spring it's a very short turnaround to the autumn and we've got some big goals in front of them," Price told Racing.com. Flying Artie will be aimed at the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), while Price will look to start Extreme Choice in the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m).

Cao Cao Is Price’s Blue Diamond Number OnePrice will aim talented colt Cao Cao (Fastnet Rock) for a tilt at the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Caulfield on 25 February, a race the trainer enjoyed a quinella in last year when Extreme Choice beat Flying Artie by a length and three quarters. "Cao Cao is our main one as he's had the experience and he's the tough one and he's got plenty of improvement to come," Price told Racing.com. "He's in work at the moment and he's jumping out of his skin. The 1200 metres will be fantastic for him and he's got some prize money and he'll be a Blue Diamond horse no problem." Cao Cao ran second on debut in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) before breaking his maiden in his most recent start over 1000 metres at Moonee Valley in November.

Le Romain To Run In Southern Cross StakesDual Group One winner Le Romain (Hard Spun) tuned up for his autumn campaign when stepped out for a barrier trial over 845 metres at Wyong yesterday and trainer Kris Lees will now look to start the gelding in the Southern Cross Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick on 11 February. "He trialled well this morning and he's in good order," Lees said. “It was only a soft trial this morning but I'm pretty pleased with how he is coming up." Le Romain won twice at Group One level over 1600 metres last year, taking out

the the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) during the Sydney autumn carnival and the Cantala Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington in the spring at his most recent start on 29 October.

Queensland Winter Carnival For GoodfellaGoodfella (Snitzel) has earned himself a start in some of the top two-year-old races during the Queensland Winter Carnival after trainer Bjorn Baker was impressed with this luckless fourth place finish in Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast. "I thought he ran really well," Baker told Racing.com. "I was surprised he got so far back. That wasn't my intention at all but he ran on well. He'll probably come back for the Brisbane two-year-old series - the Champagne, the Sires' Produce and the JJ Atkins."

Pure Pride Progressing WellPromising mare Pure Pride (Shocking) is nearing a return to the track as trainer Murray Johnson will look to run the mare in the next five or six weeks. The four-year daughter of Shocking (Street Cry) has not been seen since running fifth behind I Am A Star (I Am Invincible) in the Myer Classic (registered as Empire Rose Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on 29 October, having run a close second in the Blazer Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in her previous start.

Cartwright Penalty Expected This WeekThoroughbred Racing SA (TRSA) confirmed yesterday that TRSA stewards' are investigating an incident involving jockey Josh Cartwright in the final race at Morphettville on Saturday, with the penalty expected to be decided this week. TRSA Stewards charged Cartwright for reckless riding after it was deemed he directed Senior Council (Hussonet) at an acute angle with the intention of making contact with runners to his outside. "Mr Cartwright pleaded guilty to the charge and was stood down from all riding activity with immediate effect,” the Thoroughbred Racing SA statement said. “Stewards adjourned the matter on penalty for further consideration. This matter is being further investigated by Stewards. It is anticipated a decision regarding the penalty may be made this week."

Yankee Rose Returns Positive Test To Anti-Inflammatory DrugThe David Vandyke-trained Group One winner Yankee Rose (All American) has returned a positive test to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory Ketorolac after her placing in the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) last October. The three-year-old filly finished second to Global Glamour (Star Witness) in the Flight Stakes at Randwick, with Racing NSW stewards to hold an inquiry into the findings on 20 January in Sydney. "Stewards have advised me that a swab sample taken from Yankee Rose following her second in the Flight Stakes has come back positive to Ketorolac," Vandyke said in a statement. "This medication was prescribed and administered by a licensed veterinarian who treated Yankee Rose."

Goodrich Hearing To Take Place TodayThe Victorian Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board has scheduled hearings in relation to the charges laid by Racing Victoria stewards' against trainer Kate Goodrich over of hindering the stewards in carrying out their duties after she did not allow stewards to conduct a routine raceday stable inspection last month, with the hearing due to take place at 11am today. The RAD Board will then hear the charge laid by the stewards against trainer Kate Goodrich at 9.30am on 23 January.

New Zealand

Wellington Cup For Laming’s Sly Romance Victorian trainer Richard Laming is to target the Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) on 21 January with Sly Romance (Pentire). The five-year-old won over 3000 metres at Moonee Valley at his most recent start, and Laming is keen on his chances in the NZ$250,000 feature. “It’s worth a quarter-of-a-million and it’s two miles and that’s the key for this horse as he’s a genuine two miler and seems to be getting better the older he gets,’’ Laming told Racing.com. “There’s the half-million Auckland Cup in about eight weeks so if he runs well on Saturday, he could stay for that.’’

Autridge & Richards Chase Stakes DoubleCo-trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards will chase a stakes double at Trentham on Saturday, when dual Group One-winner Xtravagant (Pentire) tackles the Telegraph Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Echezeaux (Encosta De Lago) and Zambezi Warrior (Pentire) take their chance in the Wellington Cup. Echezeaux, who was last seen running third in the Marton Cup (Listed, 2200m), while Zambezi Warrior finished seventh in the City Of Auckland Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) in this last start and Autridge believes they both have good chances on Saturday. “I don’t see why they both can’t be good chances,” Autridge told www.theinformant.co.nz. “They both indicate they should run the two miles and it’s not exactly what you’d call a vintage field.”

Odyssey Moon Arrives In NZOdyssey Moon (Snitzel) has arrived in New Zealand in good shape according to trainer Robert Smerdon, as the four-year-old entire is aimed at a tilt in Saturday’s Telegraph Stakes at Trentham. A winner of the Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) on his most recent start at Flemington on New Year’s Day, Odyssey Moon is a $4 chance with the TAB to land the NZ$250,000 race. "He'll have a gallop at Cambridge tomorrow [Tuesday], and then they float from there to Wellington on Friday, it's about eight hours [to get] down there,” Smerdon told Racing.com. “I think he can measure up quite well if he takes his A-game. The course there at Wellington is very similar to Flemington, it's got one dog-leg turn, so it's almost straight, and he's won a couple at Flemington.”

Il Cavallo To Return To TrainingAfter only managing to get three mares in foal while standing at Chequers Stud in New Zealand Il Cavallo (Choisir) will return to racing as gelding. The six-year-old, who was stakes placed in Australia, will return to training and will likely trial in February. "He's basically infertile. He only got three mares officially in foal," Mark Fraser-Campin told nzracing.co.nz. "Obviously, it was a disaster of a season for us. We got him for all the right reasons and it's just been very

unfortunate. We decided to try him again as a racehorse so we've gelded him. It isn't going to be easy, but we like a challenge. As one door closes, another opens.” First Serve Ready For TelegraphTop class sprinter First Serve (Swiss Ace) is reportedly in peak condition ahead of her run in the Telegraph Stakes at Trentham on Saturday. The Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained four-year-old has won seven her nine starts, including Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Riccarton Park on 9 November and was most recently seen winning over 1250 metres at Waikouaiti on New Year’s Day. “We’re really happy with her, she’s doing everything right,” said Michael Pitman.

Karaka Million For WaldorfTrainer Andrew Campbell is confident that Waldorf (Highly Recommended) can improve on his sixth place finish in the Eclipse Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day, when he returns to the track for the Karaka Million (RL, 1200m) on 29 January. Waldorf made a winning debut over 1000 metres at Tauherenikau in the spring before running second behind Gift Of Power (Power) in the Wellesley Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Trentham in October. “He wasn’t 100 per cent fit then (most recent run) and he’s a much better horse now,” trainer and part-owner Campbell said. “I’m really happy with him and the Million has always been the target for him.”

Derby Hopeful Wehadadeal To WellingtonThe Graeme Sanders and Debbie Sweeney-trained Wehadadeal (Pluck) will look to further his New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) claims when he takes on older horses in a Benchmark 65 (1600m) at Trentham on Saturday. Wehadadeal broke his maiden over 14000 metres at Te Rapa last month before he finished fifth in the Great Northern Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) in his last start at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. “He’s a lovely horse and he got a decent check at the start of the race and he got well back, which wasn’t the plan,” Sanders said. “After Saturday, he’ll probably go to the Avondale Guineas.”

Farm Boy Back From InjuryGroup Two-winner Farm Boy (El Hermano) will look to get his career back on track, since injuring his leg in a paddock accident on 5 November, when he lines up in an Open Handicap over 1400 metres at Tauranga on Friday. The six-year-old gelding, who ran third in the Makfi Challenge Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Hastings on 27 August, was last seen finishing fourth in the Carbine Club Trophy Handicap (1600m) on 1 November, having taken out the Avondale Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) in 2015. “He’s come up really well and we’ll probably run him in the open 1400 at Tauranga on Friday,” said co-trainer Tim Carter, who prepares the gelding wife Margaret.

Awapuni Apprentice InjuredApprentice Tim Johnson looks set to spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines after he broke his arm on Saturday night. Johnson’s employer trainer Mark Oulaghan said he was yet to hear the full story as to how the injury occurred, but he did confirm it was not ‘horse related.’ “I haven’t caught up with him yet and got all the details, but they did have to operate so he could be out for six weeks to a couple of months,” said Oulaghan. Johnson is currently sitting on 21 wins for the season and is lying in second place behind Sam Weatherley on the apprentices’ championship.

I Am Yarraman … A Day To Remember

Harry Mitchell won’t forget Saturday 14 January 2017 any time soon.

After all, it is the major aim of any stud farm to produce winners and Mitchell’s Yarraman Park has been doing exactly that since the 1970s … but they don’t get any more ‘red-letter’ than last Saturday.

Flying Jess, who won the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas in a boilover, got the ball rolling for Yarraman Park’s resident stallion, Hinchinbrook, while stablemate, I Am Invincible, continued his spectacular rise and rise with Houtzen capturing the $2 million Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

Then, later that night, Lord Balmoral - sold by Yarraman Park at the 2015 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale - made it a ‘treble’ by snaring the Listed Fairview Wines Sophomore Sprint in South Africa.

Adding to the theatre, Flying Jess was considered a $101 shot - at best - for the 3YO

Guineas and had to overhaul both the then unbeaten colt and raging hot favourite, Winning Rupert, plus dual Group One winner, Global Glamour, while further complicating matters, Houtzen had to jump from the widest barrier (16) in the 2YO Classic and many had written off her chances.

“That was an extraordinary day to say the least,” Mitchell points out. “You take a lot of pride in what you sell (Yarraman Park has previously sold a Redoute’s Choice colt for $3 million at the 2006 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and Virage de Fortune for $3.4 million at the 2007 Inglis Broodmare Sale), but there is nothing more satisfying than seeing you own stallions win big races.

“We sold Houtzen for $105,000 to Toby Edmonds at the Gold Coast Magic Millions last year and it was tremendous to see Toby and his group of owners get the win after she had do all the work at both ends of the race.

“It could have been an even better day for I Am Invincible with Viddora running so well in the (Magic Millions) Sprint and I Am Zelady (Magic Millions Plate) getting second too, but I’m not complaining!

“We’re all very happy for the connections of Flying Jess as well. Joe O’Neill (Prime Thoroughbreds) does a great job with his syndicates and well done to John Muir (Milburn Creek) which bred and sold her. John also had an I Am Invincible colt make $900,000 on the Gold Coast, so it’s not just Yarraman Park that are walking away happy.

“We’ve been selling horses up here (Gold Coast) since the second year (1987). We came the first year just to have a look, but have brought a draft every year since. They (Magic Millions) do a terrific job.”

Muir, meanwhile, reveals that Milburn Creek actually had a draft at the initial Magic Millions back in 1986 and, 31 years on, was very happy with his farm’s results in 2017.

“We brought 11 up for book one and we’re not taking any home,” Muir enthused. “I thought our I Am Invincible colt might make the million, but $900,000 is a great result and he’s going to a top trainer too in Tony McEvoy.

“As for Flying Jess, what a tremendous result for Joe O’Neill and his syndicate. Milburn Creek actually sold Calming to Joe at this sale back in 1999, so we can say that we’ve sold him his first stakes winner and now his biggest winner!

“People don’t realise a lot of the time how tough it can be: we’ve had a very good sale but there’s a lot of other vendors that put the time and effort in, yet might not get the desired result. They’re the lifeblood of the industry and full marks to them. This industry is full of wonderful people

and my suggestion is to keep at it and your day in the sun will come.”HOOFBEAT: Lord Balmoral broke through for his initial black type

success on Saturday night, running rivals off their feet in the R150,000 Sophomore Sprint.

A son of the Widden Stud based, Star Witness - sire of Global Glamour, Star Turn et al - Lord Balmoral was sold by Yarraman Park to Heritage Bloodstock and Balmoral Stud for $53,000 at the 2015 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, before being sold to Ken Truter for R650,000 at the 2015 CTS Lanzerac Ready To Run Sale in South Africa.

Lord Balmoral now has three wins and two placings from seven starts for trainer Vaughan Marshall.
