WHY DO WE CALL PASSOVER

PASSOVER??? ANSWER FROM

UTAF GAZA by Ari Ciment

רה ניסים נעשו לאבותינו במצריים , עשר מכות הביא הקדוש ; ועשרה על הים עש

רה , ל המצריים במצרייםברוך הוא ע ועש על הים

Ten miracles were performed for our

forefathers in Egypt, and another ten

at the sea. Ten afflictions were

wrought by G-d upon the Egyptians

in Egypt, and another ten at the sea

(Avos 5:4) QUESTION #1) Why does the

mishna in Avos repeat the point!

Certainly the miracles in Egypt and

the “afflictions” were in fact one and

the same and so why repeat this

statement!?

QUESTION #2) Why do we call

Passover Passover? Given the

plethora of clearly identifiable

miracles (i.e. each of the visible

plagues), why does the name of our

holiday stem from the “hidden”

miracle of G-d passing over the Jews

and targeting only the firstborn

Egyptians?

ANSWER:

20 minutes before a UN brokered

ceasefire in the Gazan-Israeli war in

2014, the Gazans reigned down 120

missiles which in retrospect was sent

to disguise their first terror tunnel

infiltration set to cross from

Palestinian Gaza into an Israeli

wheat field in Utaf Gaza. 13

terrorists were sent on this mission

and such a surprise attack would

have killed many.

Just 2 days before this, 2 students

from Bnei Brak who were looking

for a good field to purchase for

Shemurah Matzah production, finally

got the OK on a sale of that very

field to start clearing the dense

sheaves of wheat that covered this

precious land. To the 13 terrorist’s

surprise, their disguise and shade

vanished as they emerged from this

secretive tunnel. A courageous

Israeli soldier easily spotted these

infiltrators all because the 2 students

from Bnei Brak purchased that very

field and unbeknownst to the Arab

infiltrators, chopped the wheat

bushes down exposing the land. Half

the terrorists were annihilated and

the other half forced back into Gaza.

At the time of this event, Israeli’s

thanked G-d for the miracle of

getting these Arab terrorists in such a

timely fashion. Only later were we

able to see the miracles behind the

miracle. The fact that these 2

students from Bnei Brak were able to

purchase the field and clear the field

just in time as well as the fact that an

Israeli soldier was able to spot such

an unexpected surprise!

The reason why we specifically

celebrate Passover as Passover is

because we are sophisticated enough

to acknowledge that there are

miracles that are hidden to our eyes

that set the stage for the “evident”

miracles such as the wondrous

plagues. The smiting of the firstborn

Egyptian is certainly miraculous but

the “hidden” passing over of us Bnei

Yisroel is the crux of that miracle

and the backdrop of very other

plague as well.

In this manner, the Tanna in Avos

was exact when he reminds us that

the miracles and plagues were in fact

not necessarily the same. There is

little doubt that each of the wondrous

plagues that G-d brought to smite the

Egyptians had inherent Jewish

miraculous stories much like the

story of Aluf Gaza that went along.

TAKEAWAY MESSAGE/S: Hidden

miraculous stories in Egypt went

side by side with the glorious

wondrous open miraculous plagues.

The Holiday is specifically called

Passover to remind us of the hidden

miracles that provided the backdrop

of our miraculous redemption. The 2

students of Bnei Brak performing the

mitzvah of Shemirat Matzah saved

our nation in the ultimate Passover

type of way. PASSOVER IS

CALLED PASSOVER TO

REMIND US ABOUT THE

HIDDEN MIRACLES ESSENTIAL

FOR OUR SURVIVAL; UTAF

GAZA REMINDS US OF THE

POWER PASSOVER, THE

HIDDEN MIRA
