For decades, radioactive iodine (I-131) therapy has been an effective tool for the treatment for hyperthyroidism, most commonly seen as Graves’ disease.

Radioactive iodine doses have increased over the years to achieve permanent relief of symptoms and to reduce the chances of hyperthyroidism recurrence.

When radioactive iodine-131 is indicated (over antithyroid agents) as first-line therapy, it’s important to remember that I-131 therapy is now available on an outpatient basis through Radiology Associates Southside Imaging Center. Ordering physicians can be assured that the entire process is handled professionally and with the utmost concern for the patient.

Patients referred to Radiology Associates for I-131 therapy receive a thorough explanation of the procedure from a member of our Nuclear Medicine Team. A detailed thyroid therapy instruction and consent form clearly describing preparations, safety precautions and post-treatment activities is reviewed with the patient. Following this conversation, the patient swallows the iodine dose, which is absorbed into the bloodstream and localizes to the thyroid gland. The entire process is supervised by one of our subspecialty-trained, board certified radiologists.

Doses of 5 to 30 millicuries (mCi) of I-131 are typically administered to slow or stop overactive thyroid tissue. Patients are able to return home and resume normal activities a few days after I-131 treatment, although it’s not uncommon for patients to experience some post-treatment neck pain. This can be treated by your physician with over the counter medications.

The I-131 treatment will gradually slow or stop thyroid function over the next several months as the desired therapeutic effect is achieved. A physician will continue to monitor thyroid function to determine the appropriate time to start thyroid replacement hormone.

It is important to reiterate I-131 therapy is not appropriate for women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding. For further information, or to schedule an appointment at Radiology Associates, please contact us at 887-7000.

“It’s a labor of love,” said Carmen Arias, marketing director for the radiology group, who had paint smeared from her ankles to her face. (Reported in the Caller-Times, June 7, 2009)

Radiology Associates’ Community Volunteer Group has provided countless volunteer hours to the Coastal Bend community, participating in such events as Operation Paintbrush, Graffiti Wipeout and Beach Clean-up. No project is too big or too small, as the group enjoys taking an active role in their community and is always willing to give back for the good of the city.

As part of the city-wide Operation Paintbrush, Radiology

Associates’ “Skeleton Crew” gathered on June 6 to paint the

home of Ms. Ora Hill, a longtime Corpus Christi resident.

Also pictured is Dr. Belinda Gonzales, a local practitioner

who graciously volunteered to help!

It was the group’s third consecutive year volunteering for Operation Paintbrush, which aims to spruce up homes in low-income neighborhoods.

Ms. Hill said she was touched by the selfless effort of

the volunteers and commented it was the “best birthday

present” she had ever received (she turned 85 on June 15).
