Phillip Island, the self-styled home of Australian motorsport, is steeped in motor racing tradition, with the first car races having been held there on public roads in the 1920s. The first motorcycle races took place in 1931 and a permanent track was built in 1956. The circuit fell into disrepair during the late 70s and early 80s until it was bought in 1985 and given a AUS $5m facelift. MotoGP returned in 1989 and 1990 before becoming a regular fixture once more from 1997 onwards. Phillip Island, die selbstgemachte Heimat des australischen Motorsports, ist von Motorrennsport-Tradition quasi durchtränkt: In den zwanziger Jahren wurden dort auf öffentlichen Straßen die ersten Auto-Rennen gefahren. Die ersten Motorradrennen fanden 1931 statt, und eine feste Rennstrecke wurde 1956 gebaut. Die Strecke wurde in den späten Siebzigern bzw. Anfang der Achtziger Jahre reparaturbedürftig. Im Jahr 1985 wurde die Strecke aufgekauft und im Wert von fünf Millionen AUS Dollar renoviert. Der MotoGP kehrte 1989 und 1990 nach Phillip Island zurück.1997 konnte sich die Strecke wieder im Terminkalender etablieren. Phillip Island, en Australie, est l’un des hauts lieux des sports mécaniques. Des courses auto y ont eu lieu sur routes publiques dans les années 1920, puis des courses moto y ont été disputées à partir de 1931. Un circuit permanent a été construit en 1956, mais n’a pas été entretenu durant les années 1970 et au début de la décennie suivante. En 1985, il fut racheté et rénové. Après deux épreuves MotoGP en 1989 et 1990, Phillip Island a définitivement gagné sa place sur le calendrier en 1997.
