Luke 1:26-38 (NRSVCE). The Birth of Jesus Foretold (The Annunciation)26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of

David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you.”[a]29 But she was much perplexed by his words and

pondered what sort of greeting this might be. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. 31 And now, you will conceive in your

womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his

ancestor David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a

virgin?”[b] 35 The angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born [c] will be holy;

he will be called Son of God. 36 And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be

barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 Then Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Then the angel

departed from her. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+1%3A26-38&version=NRSVCE

++++++Luke 1:26-38 (GNT). The Birth of Jesus Is Announced (The Annunciation)26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth. 27 He had a message for a young woman promised in

marriage to a man named Joseph, who was a descendant of King David. Her name was Mary. 28 The angel came to her and said, “Peace be with you! The Lord is with

you and has greatly blessed you!”

29 Mary was deeply troubled by the angel's message, and she wondered what his words meant. 30 The angel said to her, “Don't be afraid, Mary; God has been gracious to

you. 31 You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God

will make him a king, as his ancestor David was, 33 and he will be the king of the descendants of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end!” 34 Mary said to the angel, “I

am a virgin. How, then, can this be?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God's power will rest upon you. For this reason, the holy child will be called the Son of God. 36 Remember

your relative Elizabeth. It is said that she cannot have children, but she herself is now six months pregnant, even though she is very old. 37 For there is nothing that God

cannot do.”

38 “I am the Lord's servant,” said Mary; “may it happen to me as you have said.” And the angel left her.

Scripture: Luke 1:26-38

Prepare to read/listen to Scripture about Mary.

Bible

DCEO – Rockhampton

Teacher Background - The Gospel according to Luke The author is a certain Luke, whom patristic writers identify as a companion of Paul. The texts that Luke wrote indicate that he was a highly educated person, influential in the early church and aware of geography and history.

The date widely favoured at which Luke’s Gospel was written is around A.D. 80.

He is writing a narrative with features like characters, setting and plot, so that it is important to read and follow the story through introduction, conflict, climax and resolution. He is a gifted storyteller and relates events in sequence. The development of the plot itself has a persuasive force. We must seek Luke’s meaning through the movement of the story. It is of primary importance to locate where something occurs in Luke’s narrative.

Luke’s readers were Greek-speaking and sufficiently acquainted with scriptural traditions to grasp many of his allusions. They were also Christian and Gentiles. His use of Greek is among the finest in the New Testament and he is well versed in Greco-Roman literary style.

Where does the text take place?

DCEO – Rockhampton

Galilee is a small region in the north of modern-day Israel. In the time of Jesus, as today, it was a very fertile area, the fresh water of Lake Galilee being used to irrigate the rich red soil. In the adult life of Jesus, the region was governed by Herod Antipas (son of Herod the Great). According to Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus lived in Galilee and most of his ministry was in Galilee. The region is thought to have been well populated with up to 200 villages. Some of the best known are Nain, Nazareth, Cana and Capernaum. Nazareth was a town in the northern region of Galilee about 15 miles south west of Lake Galilee (sometimes called the Sea of Galilee). http://www.thebibledoctor.com/g.html

Nazareth was a small and insignificant village. Jesus was referred to as “Jesus of Nazareth”. Although Bethlehem was the place of Jesus’ birth, Nazareth was the place where Jesus had lived until He began His public ministry, and therefore He is said to be “of Nazareth.”Matthew 2:23 tells us that Joseph settled his family in Nazareth—after returning from Egypt where he had fled to protect Jesus from Herod—in order to fulfil “what was said through the prophets: ‘He will be called a Nazarene.’”

The phrase “Jesus of Nazareth” is first used in the Bible by Phillip who, after being called by Jesus to follow Him, told Nathanael, "We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph" (John 1:45). By calling Him Jesus of Nazareth, Phillip may also have been making a statement about the lowliness of His birth. The character of the people of Nazareth was such that they were despised and condemned.

Nathanael’s response, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” (John 1:46) would seem to indicate such. To come from Nazareth, therefore, or to be a Nazarene, was the same as to be despised, or to be esteemed of low birth. The Messiah who would come to save His people would be “a root out of dry ground” (Isaiah 53:2). He would be “despised and rejected of men” from whom men hid their faces and “esteemed him not” (Isaiah 53:3).

Who are the characters in the text?Angel Gabriel, Elizabeth, Mary

DCEO – Rockhampton

AngelAngels are referred to repeatedly throughout the Bible. In the biblical text, angels are real, living beings. Spiritual and non-physical, some take on a physical appearance for a period of time. A human encounter with an angel is in some sense an encounter with God. On many occasions God chooses to be known through an angel (Ex 3:2). The main activities of an angel are to offer praise and worship of God, to make announcements, to carry messages on behalf of God and to guide and protect people. Angels were deeply involved in proclaiming the birth of Jesus. The book of Hebrews (Heb 1:14) refers to angels as 'ministering spirits sent to serve.'

Elizabeth

Elizabeth in the Bible was the wife of a priest named Zechariah; she was also a cousin of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Elizabeth and Zechariah are called “righteous and blameless” people who walked in all the commandments of the Lord (Luke 1:6). When Zechariah was in the temple offering incense to the Lord, the angel Gabriel appeared to him, saying that he and Elizabeth would soon be parents; they were to name the baby John. This baby would grow up to be “great before the Lord” and bring joy and gladness to them, as well as to many other people (Luke 1:14–15).

Elizabeth, when finding herself pregnant, kept herself in seclusion for five months. She said, “The Lord has done this for me. . . . In these days he has shown his favour and taken away my disgrace among the people” (Luke 1:25). Six months after Elizabeth conceived, Mary also became pregnant, and she went to visit Elizabeth, because Gabriel had told her of Elizabeth’s pregnancy (Luke 1:36–37). It is a sign of God’s love and care that he placed these women in the same family. He could have just as easily made them strangers to one another, but, by making them relatives, He gave them mutual comfort and encouragement.

DCEO – Rockhampton

Mary

Mary the mother of Jesus was described by God as “highly favoured” (Luke 1:28). The phrase highly favoured comes from a single Greek word, which essentially means “much grace.” Mary received God’s grace.

Grace is “unmerited favour”; that is, grace is a blessing we receive despite the fact that we do not deserve it. Mary needed grace from God and a Saviour, just as the rest of us do. Mary herself understood this fact, as she declared in Luke 1:47, “My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.”

The virgin Mary, by God’s grace, recognized that she needed the Saviour. The Bible never says that Mary was anyone but an ordinary human whom God chose to use in an extraordinary way. Yes, Mary was a righteous woman and favoured (graced) by God (Luke 1:27–28).

When Gabriel told her that the child would be conceived by the Holy Spirit, Mary answered, "I am the Lord's servant. . . . May your word to me be fulfilled. Then the angel left her" (Luke 1:38). Mary responded with belief and a willingness to submit to God's plan. We, too, should have such faith in God and trustingly follow Him.

Mary herself sets the example for us, directing her worship, adoration, and praise to God alone: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for He has been mindful of the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me — holy is His name” (Luke 1:46–49).

Chorus plays present Scriptural stories in the form of a play with both individual characters and a chorus. The chorus aspects allows for whole group participation. One of the aimes of Chorus plays is to provide not only a presentation of the story but also – and more importantly – an informed interpretation of it. Ther ar3e many exellent sources of references avaailble today to assist interpretation, especially Biblical commentaries.

Liquid picturesLiquid pictures is a form of drama which allows a story to be presented in a flowing or liquid manner. The process follows this pattern:

Choose a familiar Scriptural story. Divide the story into five or six main sections. For each section choose one or two short phrases. Choose a simple action for each section. Choose one person for each sectipon. These five or six people stand with their backs to the rest of the group. A teacher or leader introduces the story with a simple statement. The first student turns to face the group-repeats the phrase two or three times then freezes. The second student turns, repeats a phrase then freezes. The process continues unitl th last student finishes. The teacher or leader concludes with a simple statement.

Godly Play: Mary the Mother of JesusLesson 6: Mary, the Mother of Jesus.God chose Mary to be the mother of Jesus when she was a teenager. Joseph and Mary raised Jesus and Mary was present during the different events of Jesus life as recorded in the Gospels and also at His death. Mary is the mother of Jesus and of all Christians and is a model of faith.

The story icon is an image of Mary holding the infant Jesus. The underlay is a strip of blue felt. Each object in the story is approx. the same size.Objects needed:An angel imageA wooden Christ child in a mangerA scroll of IsaiahA crucifixAn empty tombA red flame made of wood andSilk forget-me-nots.It is important to ensure the sequence of the story is right, because when you change the sequence, you change the storyWondering questions:I wonder what it felt like to be in the presence of an angel.I wonder if it was hard for Mary to make the decision to say yes to God.I wonder what Mary was thinking in the synagogue, at the wedding in Cana and when Jesus died on the cross.I wonder how Mary felt when she found the empty tomb. I wonder how Mary had the strength to endure such sorrow.

Why Catholics call Mary their Mother

Father Mike Schmitz (Ascension Presents) explains why Catholics call Mary their Mother. He explains the following points:

- Mary is not God, she is completely human.- She is the perfect disciple.- Mary is the Mother of God.- The more you love Mary, the more you love Jesus.- Mary reflects the life and love of the Son (Jesus).- Mary is our Mother too.- Anyone who is a disciple of Jesus can call Mary their mother; Jesus gave her to us

from the cross. - To love the ones that Jesus loved is to amplify our love for Him.- Mary points us to Jesus.

The Rosary

The Rosary has evolved as part of the long history of the Church to the form we know today. Its origins are associated with the prayer of monks and nuns. The Rosary has always been a form of contemplative prayer that is centred on the life of Jesus and Mary as portrayed in the Gospels. The Rosary invites us to spend time with Jesus and Mary in prayerful reflection.

A thousand years before the birth of Jesus, Hindus used beads made from seeds or knots tied on a string to count their prayers as they repeated their names for God. Four hundred years after the birth of Jesus, the Buddhists, like Hindus, counted prayers made of wood, pebbles or precious stones. Seven hundred years after the birth of Christianity, the Islamic community used beads to count the 99 names of God known as Allah.
