As the car turned onto Independence Avenue , the President said that hewould really like to take a drive out to Dupont Circle and to the 18th andColumbia Road area to look at "hippies," because he'd never seen one, hesaid.

_' At the Smithsonian, the President stopped the car and said he'd trade carswith, the Secret Service, so his party changed into the Secret Service follow-

\ up -- a Station Wagon. -- w/ driver, mf, and Lem Johns in front seat.Vicky McHugh. Mrs. Johnson, and the President in second seat, and

I Jones and Simon McHugh in rear. The President didn't find the airconditioning adequate, so he lowered his window and put his elbow onthe window and sort of leaned out. He was recognized by passing tourists .at a stop light -- they were quit e surprised to say the least to see thePresident leaning out the window of a Mercury station wagon -- and ,the President did stop and say. "How are you?" ASB The Secret servicewere following behind in the President's limousine.

On Connecticut Avenue, the President said he thought he ought to hide his facea bit, so he put on his dark glasses. At Dupont Circle, the President asked

j Mrs. Johnson to try to find some "hippies" for him to see -- not many wereout, but the President did get to see a couple of them. The car followed theouter section of the circle two times around, and then moved to the inner

: section...fo r two times around, The second time around the President got aj good look at the long haired, necklace draped, rope tied clothed fellowsj sitting around on the benches. He took special interest in one who had a

| !_ bundle of pamphlets under his arm, distributing them to anyone who wouldI j take them The second time around, people began to notice the big black limousine

and the President said we had better get on our way.
