    Kasauli to Edith Clerke

    and Aubrey Bond. . WhenBond was four years old,

    his mother separated

    from his father and

    Following his high school education he went

    to his aunt's house in England and stayedthere for four years. In London he startedwriting his first novel, The Room on theRoof, the semi-autobiographical story of theorphaned Anglo-Indian boy Rusty. . Bondused the advance money from the book topay the sea passage to Bombay. He workedfor some years as a journalist in Delhi andDehradun. Since 1963 he has lived as afreelance writer in Mussoorie, a town in theHimalayan foothills.[1] He wrote Vagrants inthe Valley, as a sequel to The Room on theRoof. These two novels were published inone volume by Penguin India in 1993.

    Filmography

    Based on Bond's historical novel A Flight ofPigeons (about an episode during the IndianRebellion of 1857), the Hindi film Junoon wasproduced in 1978 by Shashi Kapoor anddirected by Shyam Benegal. Ruskin Bond madehis maiden big screen appearance with a cameoin Vishal Bhardwaj's film 7 Khoon Maaf, basedon his short story Susanna's Seven Husbands.Bond appears as a Bishop in the movie with

    Priyanka Chopra playing the title role.[2] Bondhad earlier collaborated with him in the The BlueUmbrella which was also based on his story.

    He wrote his first novel named 'RoomOn The Roof' when he was all of 17years. The book made him winprestigious 'John Llewellyn Rhys' Prizethat is awarded to BritishCommonwealth Writers who are underthe age of 30.
