SCHOOL FETE
Hopefully by now you are well aware that we will be holding our school
fete on Easter Saturday APRIL 7TH (SMACK BANG IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR FIRST TERM HOLIDAYS) I know I’ve said this previously, this is our
major fundraiser for the year and it would be really appreciated if all families could commit to making this fete the most successful ever.
Please, if you are approached by one of our hard working ‘Parents and Friends Committee’ members, be positive in your response for help /
assistance and remember that all money raised goes towards supporting
your child’s / children’s education and learning environment.
TEACHER / PARENT LEARNING DISCUSSION ARRANGEMENTS
Teacher / Parent Learning Discussions will take place on Tuesday APRIL
2nd (Week 10). The purpose of these very important meetings is for
teachers to discuss with parents the learning, social progress and needs of their child / children. Basically the meeting is meant to inform parents
about how well students have settled in and are currently working; an update of progress made since the start of the year. You should have
receive an ‘Information Note’ with all of the details that you need. Please
follow the instructions in order to make a time for your discussion.
OUR SPORTS DAY
What a top day it was! There is no doubt that we were fortunate with
the weather but that is about the only lucky bit. All of the rest of the
successes were due to a great team effort in the planning, organising and preparation stages before the day as well as everyone’s contribution
on the actual day. As mentioned in the ‘Presentation Section’ at the end of the day; the interest and support of staff, students and parents was
great. Such a positive attitude and involvement certainly helps make the day an enjoyable, stress free one for everyone; just the way it should be.
Well done everyone!
Congratulations to the winning team, Guichen, now 3 consecutive wins.
Congratulations also to the Guichen parents for winning the prestigious B.J.’s cup, also 3 consecutive wins.
What was really fantastic was the encouragement, support and
appreciation displayed towards each other by all students (whether towards teammates or opponents) and the large number of personal
best performances. Exactly the way it should be, well done!

Many thanks to Shane Ludwig, Adam Brooks, Antony
Kokiousis and Hans Arend who assisted in marking the footy oval and the Robe Football Club ‘Grounds Team’
for their co-operation and efforts in producing a brilliant oval surface. Thanks to the parents and staff
who assisted with the collection of sports equipment,
putting up and taking down the sunshades, were assistant chaperones for the tabloid events and those
who donated ‘goodies’ for morning tea which made the school around $260. Last but certainly not least, all
staff members who contributed when required, when and where ever possible. A massive team effort, thank
you everyone.
MID SOUTH EAST ‘S.A.P.S.A.S.A.’ ATHLETICS
DAY
Those students who performed well (1st/2nd/3rd in the
championship events) at our sports day and who meet
S.A.P.S.A.S.A standards will be invited to participate at our District Athletics Day held at Newberry Park
Primary School in Millicent on Wednesday April 3rd (Week 10).
This day is used to select our District Athletics Team
that will compete in the State Championships later in the year.
I am currently meeting with the students who have
met those standards. For the parents of these students, more information and details will be sent
home in the near future.
SCHOOL HATS
A reminder to everyone that in Terms 1 and 4, students are required to wear our SCHOOL HAT at
recess, lunchtimes and whenever outside for extended periods of time. It is fantastic that very few children
have to be spoken to about this expectation, let’s keep
the tradition going! If for some reason a student is not wearing a school hat, they will be expected to stay /
play in the pergola area or under one of the veranda
areas.
SWIMMING
Again this year our Reception to Year 7 students were able to enjoy a series of swimming lessons at the
Kingston Community School’s pool. The weather was ‘user friendly’, adding to the student’s fun, excitement
and enjoyment of the swimming program. The
feedback that I have received is that it was again a great learning experience. I would like to thank
Lucretia Tocaciu for her assistance and co-operation with organising our swimming program, it is greatly
appreciated. Even though costs are always increasing it is our intention to continue to facilitate these
lessons.
PUPIL FREE DAY
Friday MARCH 29th is our next Pupil Free Day. On this day all staff will be involved collaboratively
checking each other’s moderation of the ‘narrative’ and
‘persuasive’ writing tasks that students have recently completed. These writing pieces will then be sent to
the Bright Path Writing Program to check them for accuracy. Once this is done, we will receive feedback
about our moderation.
The Bright Path Writing Program is a program
designed to provide teachers with the next teaching points in order to improve each students writing ability
in all writing genres. It is essential that teachers are able to accurately mark / moderate each students
writing using the Bright Path Writing tool.
The Bright Path Program will eventually be Nationwide, providing much needed consistency in
teacher’s moderating of students writing.
SPORTS DAY - GUICHEN WINS!
Robe Primary School - Colour Run Fundraiser
The Run4Fun Colour Explosion was a great success with all students completing the run with a huge smile on their face. All kids involved did an excellent job fundraising with a total of $4,505 profit being
collected. A huge thank you to the Robe CFS for bringing the Fire Truck to wet the kids prior to the run to ensure the paint powder stuck! And to Robe Foodland for their generous donation of bread for the BBQ. Lastly a MASSIVE thank you to all the parents/volunteers who helped out to make the day
possible!
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is underway and hopefully students have been busy reading their quota of
books in order to have their list completed by September 6th.
We strongly encourage all parents to support this initiative. Premier’s Reading Challenge books are available
both at school and at the public library for students to borrow. It would be very sad for students to miss out on
the opportunity to complete reading 12 books from the Reading Challenge List and therefore miss out on a
medal that will be presented at an assembly later in the year.
Raises the profile of reading, libraries and
literacy in schools
Gives students a focus for their reading
Encourages students to read more books and
enjoy reading more - the more you read the better you get at it!
Offers incentives for reluctant readers
Builds self-esteem and pride, school unity, and
a sense of achievement
Increases the involvement of parents in their
child’s reading
Increases library borrowing
Contributes to increased literacy levels
Benefits of taking part in the Challenge
Pupil Free Day - Maths Training
Year 2/3 Teacher
Penny Day
On Monday 11th of February staff from Robe Primary School (and 6 teachers from neighbouring
schools) participated in a workshop titled ‘Where is the Sweet Spot in Mathematics Instruction?’
Kelvin Sparks ran the training and he is a Mathematics Coach who is based in Adelaide. Over the day
he presented many Inquiry Based Tasks and talked about how to combine these with Explicit Teaching
of Mathematics concepts in order to improve student learning.
The following day Kelvin worked in classrooms modelling to teachers how the ideas from the previous
day can be used in Mathematics lessons.
At Robe Primary School teachers are now taking the ideas from the training, trialling these in our own
classrooms and then sharing our learning and experiences at staff meeting. We have ordered new
Mathematics resources to assist us with ongoing teaching.
Year 1/2 Number Talks
Year 2/3 Teacher
Penny Day
Since the Numeracy Pupil Free Day our class has
begun each Math lesson with a ‘Number Talk’. This is
when I write a problem as an equation or number
sentence (e.g., 6 + 3 =) and children mentally solve
the question. They put their thumbs up in their lap
when they have calculated an answer and I collect
their answers and write them on the whiteboard. I
then invite students to explain their thinking and record
it visually on the board.
During this session there are no judgments or negative
comments and children are supported to explain their
thinking. Mathematical misconceptions can be talked
about and corrected and children are exposed to
different ways to solve the same problem.
Here are some ways that children solved the problem 3 + 6 =
Count all:
“I put up 6 fingers and then 3 fingers and I counted 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.”
Count on:
“I had 6 and then put up 3 fingers and counted 7, 8, 9.”
Counting by 3:
“I know that 3 and 3 makes 6 so 3 more makes 9.”
Bridge Through Ten:
“I thought 10 and then took 1 off because I know 6 and 4 makes 10.”
At the end of 2018 I applied for some funding through Bendigo Bank to collaborate a project between the Men’s shed, The Community Garden and the school. The project consists of the
construction of 5 scarecrows, based on community members, for installation at the community garden. The scarecrows have been constructed so far from wood and plastic and hopefully will be dressed and decorated soon for delivery. Emphasis and discussion about longevity of products (so
they withstand the elements) has been a focus as well as who makes up the Robe community.
JOJO SPOOK - ART
To all parent/grandparent volunteers who helped
make sports day a success by helping with equipment, being a chaperone/timer/place judge and especially to those who donated food and staffed the canteen at morning tea!
To the parent volunteers who gave their time and
helped with our ‘World Of Maths’ sessions.
To everyone involved with the organisation of the
Colour Run and also to those who helped make it a success on the actual day!
Swimming lesson volunteers, your help was most
appreciated.
Marion Rimmer, Mary Weir and Robyn Thompson
for ongoing classroom support.
