Runners Up - Sapphire City Science and Engineering Challenge

Congratulations to the 32 students who competed in the Science and Engineering Challenge in Inverell on Friday,

9th March.

Students from Years 8 to 10 formed eight teams to compete in one full day activity or two half day activities. These included:

Building a robotic hand to carry out different tasks.

Building a Paddlewheel for maximum energy transfer.

Building a tower that could bear a load as well as withstand an earthquake.

Developing networks to join a series of points in the most efficient way possible.

Bridge building to carry loads from a trolley on a rail track.

Developing a coding system to send complex messages.

Building an outdoor Catapult for distance and accuracy.

Using a complex power board to deliver power to a city in the cheapest possible way.

Students were supplied with limited materials. All activities relied on the students’ scientific problem solving skills

and their ability to work in a team environment.

Glen Innes High School achieved second place behind a very well drilled Danthonia (which was the highest scoring team in 2017 in the state), defeating other schools including Holy Trinity School, MacIntyre High School,

Inverell High School, Tenterfield High School and Warialda High School. Congratulations to our wonderful team, that included:

Our competition from the other schools was composed of teams comprising of mostly year 10 students.

However, this was no match for students from Glen Innes High. Whilst our team appreciated the calm resolve of our participants from Years 9 and 10, many of our team including our 15 Year 8 students had not attended a challenge before. Students garnered many compliments throughout the day on their great team working skills

and creativity. They achieved first in many of the activities, including the famous bridge building competition.

The competition is supported by Rotary. Four Rotary clubs, including representatives from

Glen Innes, facilitated at the day. We were very appreciative of the

time our Rotarians give to support our youth and enable such a

valuable competition to take place.

Principal's Report

Sapphire City Science & Engineering Challenge Glen Innes High School were awarded runners up at the Sapphire City Science & Engineering Challenge in Inverell on Friday 9th March. Go to our school’s Facebook page to see the video showing the team’s winning bridge design being tested to see if it will carry over 10kgs of weights. Congratulations to all involved, it shows what creative and co-operative lessons are coming out of our school.

William Yang Performance, Chapel Theatre A group of Year 11 students were involved in a two day workshop ending with them adding to William’s performance at the Chapel Theatre on Tuesday 13th March. Our students gained much from their experience and received a wonderful write up from our local paper, the Glen Innes Examiner.

AECG Meeting I attended the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Inc. (AECG) meeting on Friday 16th March at the Glen Innes Lands Council. We continue to gain greater understanding of current issues and are working hard to implement changes to improve outcomes for all students.

National Day of Action Against Bullying & Violence On Friday 16th March, schools across Australia held activities as part of the National Day of Action Against Bullying & Violence. Our students watched a screening of the movie ‘Wonder’ and participated in a number of activities to give them the skills to help find workable solutions that address bullying and violence in our community.

Student Representative Council Planning I had the pleasure of attending our SRC Development Day at the RSL on Wednesday 21st March. It was great to see all the students working co-operatively and collaboratively to redesign and refocus the group’s goals and Constitution. I am looking forward to working closely with the SRC in the coming weeks and Terms to implement positive change.

Sport We have had a lot of our students representing the school in a number of different sports. I am always hearing reports about not just how well they perform but their good sportsmanship and team spirit - great attributes.

While so many are doing well at sport and representing our school in a range of sports, it is important to remember that Wednesday afternoon sport in compulsory for students in Years 7 – 10. There are many enjoyable activities to participate in and it is expected that students do get active during this time. Please avoid appointments, etc. unless absolute necessary.

Issues I always welcome suggestions or concerns from parents/carers. If you have any then please contact me by telephoning the school office.

Potential Show Steer Sale

A number of Glen Innes High School Agriculture students attended the Potential Show Steer Sale on Monday 5th

March.

The school purchased a Limousin/Murray Grey cross heifer on the day. As reported in The Land, 6th March 2018: ‘Jody Lamph, Glen Innes High School Agriculture teacher liked the overall appeal, carcass and natural balance of the heifer. “We purchased a heifer from David (King) last year and it hung 3rd on the Hook at EKKA,

we know these cattle perform” said Mrs Lamph. The school has 48 students in their show team and 154 students studying Agriculture between year 8 to 12. “We’ll take the heifer back to school, the students will break

her in and start her preparations for the Junior Heifer Schools comp at Ekka from about 100 days out” added Mrs Lamph. Vendor, Mr King was pleased to see the school taking on another of his calves. “This heifer is a full

sister to the 2015 Jackpot winner at Ekka” proclaimed Mr King. “She is sired by a well shown and performed 14 year old Limousin bull, I got from the Kesby’s at Duri” Mr King said.’

Chess Competition

The Glen Innes High School Chess Team – Alex Woods, Shinnosuke Dawson, Hezekiah Cooper, Cornelio Zomer

and Brendan Mackenzie – were taken to PLC Armidale for a major inter-schools competition on Tuesday 13th March.

Over 150 competitors were assembled and the level of focus and dedication was impressive throughout a long day of seven rounds. We had the smallest and youngest of all High School teams, with a mix of experience

ranging from years to a few weeks. Most schools had been in serious training for weeks just to meet the challenge of this day. Nevertheless, our boys went up against all comers, from fellow Year 8 students through to Year 12 students, with courage and growing skills.

Everyone acquitted themselves well in every way, from the point of leaving school at 7:15am to our return at around 3:40pm.

Shin Dawson was one of four students from the total competition to win six out of seven games, his only loss being to the one

student who won seven from seven. As a team, the boys totalled 17 points, not too distant from the overall winners on 22 points.

One can imagine how strong our team will be over the years ahead!

A very big thank you to Shin’s mother, Kanako, for assisting me with the transportation of the team and for staying as a team

supporter throughout the long day of competition.

The entire day was very positive experience. Perhaps it is now

time to commence those 6:00am training runs – to develop a better synergy between body and mind!

Be well and never move without thought,

Girls Netball

On Friday 9th March, a lovely group of fifteen girls headed to Inverell for Winter Trials. Our first game was

against Inverell at 9:30am. GIHS led 12 to 3 in the first half and ended up winning 22 to 4. Elizabeth Chard, Summa Carpenter and Emily Burton played terrific full games backed up in the first half by Jessica Trow, Sophie McCormick, Eleanor Malone and Annaleese Myers-Cameron. In the second half they were aided by Maddison

Cooke, Jessica Wright, Bridgitte Beatty and Claudia Sieber. We also had a rotation of players having extra game time to fill out the McIntyre/Uralla team.

Our second game was against McIntyre High School at 10:00am. GIHS led 13 to 4 in the first half and ended up

winning 16 to 9. Maddie Taylor, Laura Winter and Bridgitte Beatty had full games with Jessica Trow, Elizabeth Chard, Sophie McCormick and Eleanor Malone in the first half. In the second half, Summa Carpenter, Georgina

Burton, Jessica Wright and Emily Burton joined them. Special mention to Georgina for a valiant effort at Goal Attack. Thank you to those students who grabbed a whistle and umpired in the heat for our duty at 10:30am.

Our third game was against Armidale at

11:00am. GIHS led 6 to zero in the first half and ended up winning 19 to 1. Laura Winter and Bridgitte Beatty played full

games aided in the first half by Jessica Trow, Jessica Wright, Maddison Cooke,

Summa Carpenter and Annaleese Myers-Cameron. The players who joined them in

the second half were Matilda Sieber, Georgina Burton, Maddie Taylor, Claudia Sieber and Sophie McCormick.

Our fourth game was against Duval at

11:30am. GIHS led 15 to 1 in the first half and ended up winning 26 to 1. Eleanor

Malone, Emily Burton, Maddison Cooke and Bridgitte Beatty played full games assisted

in the first half by Jessica Trow, Summa Carpenter and Annaleese Myers-Cameron. For the final hot half of the game, Elizabeth Chard, Sophie McCormick

and Matilda Sieber hit the courts.

The heat was intense and Sophie ran like a trooper as centre for the whole extra time, Laura managed a couple of her signature intercepts and Annaleese showed the tenacity which had resulted in her playing in this game. Unfortunately only ten could be chosen in total and the five students who will represent Glen Innes High School

at Coonabarabran on 4th April are Elizabeth Chard, Summa Carpenter, Emily Burton, Eleanor Malone and Bridgitte Beatty. Good luck girls.

Thank you to the girls for their exemplary behaviour and to the parents who were able to support the team on

the day. Special thanks go to Miss Rossington who came over on her day off to support our players and certainly to Julie Fuller who brought the dresses and balls; chose the players ; umpired the ‘Possibles and Probables’ game

and gave up her time to support GIHS netball.

Open Girls AFL Gala Day

Glen Innes High School fielded an Open Girls AFL team for a Gala Day in Inverell on Tuesday 13th March. The girls, many who had never played footy before, all put in a massive effort and worked tirelessly as a team

against an experienced Inverell team. Many of our girls were playing against 17-18 year olds and never took a backward step despite being juniors.

All girls enjoyed the experience with score running out to 5.13.43 vs 4.0.24

to Inverell.

A special thank you to Mrs Robyn Harvey who helped on the day.

Hopefully we see more girls involved next year.
