THE WAR NEWS.Notwithstanding that by many it was

expected that Grant would %ake r,omcoffensive movement yesterday, the daypassed without anyevent of importance.Exchanger,of papers took place as usualen the north side, (though nonewereofa later date than thosealready received)from which fact it wouldappear that the'tacit truce heretofore existing betweenthe pickets has not been broken by thepresence of Butler's negroe*.

We stated yesterday that Grant hadbeen reinforced by the Sixth corps fromSheridan's army. From the number oftransports, loaded with troops, that havebeen passing down the Potomac duringthe iast four days, it Is probable that, theEighth corps is also moving to Jamieriver. We think it quite certnin thatfGrant is mustering forces for the long-talkcd-of grand attack upon the Rich-mond lines. His concentration for thispurpose will not occupy him long; and ifthe fine weather of the last few days)continues, he may bring on a battle this 'week.'

FROM ITTERSBURO.There was no news of importance fromPetersburg yesterday. Some cannon-

ading was kept up on m;r left duringMonday, but withoutresult'

From Georgia.?We find in the Geor-gia papers some history of the horrorsof Sherman's march through that State. In a long letter, written from Milledge-ritle after the Yankees had led, and written in a calm, dispassionate style, with-out any attempt at exaggeration, wefindthe following terrible paragraph:" The most dreadf,; 1,thing was their vic-lence towards the ladies At lea;' six orseven suffered the U~t eztzenity. Oneyoung girl occame era-ed in conse-quence and has been sent to thtasyhunOther ladies wero stripped of their gar-ment-, and, in such a plight, compelledtoplay the piano; and, in'the event ofa refusal, switched unmercifully. LetUeorgians remember these things in theday of battle ;':The same writer., speakingof the con

dition of Shermans army, says:"The solders weae admirablycicthedand appointed. Each, man had eightyrounds of ammunition, while their wa-gons contained h\__<i ___terial without

prepared, and theysuffJred for nothing."A gentleman who left Atlantaafter itsevacuation by Sherman reports that?'! "Therear guardof Sherman'sarmy leftjmere on Wednesday week, leavingsomeonehundred of their sick and woundedinthe place. Before leaving, they burneds.l therailroad and other public build-

ings, including the hotels, banking andbusiness houses The Masonic Hallchurches, dwellings and college build-ings were left undtstnrbed. The Stateroad is reported destroyed as far northas Chickamauga."

General Wheeler, since the setting outof Sherman's expedition, has displayeddistinguishedability and gallantry. lieis a braveand accomplished officer, fullyup to his profession in every respect ex-cept in the matter of raid-, m the con-duct of which it mustbe admitted he hasnot been very successful. Dining thiscampaign he has hung upon Sherman'srear, cutting off stragglers, ant! hovered

| on his flanks, driving in foragingparties, while one* portionof hi-, command pre-ceded the enemy, destroying bridges andferries and obstructing roads. In addi-tion to all this, he has three or fourtimes beaten superior forces of the en-emy'- cavalry in battle. He and bigmen have been constantly in thcsaddlefor now nearly a month.

I IJHTEBESTTKO FROM EUROPEA letter from London to the Philadel-phia Inquirer gives the following late'foreign intelligence:

THE CAPTURE OF THE FLOHIDAas f <:aid in my last Ic-ttrr, has caused noincitement here, in spite of the strenu-ous efforts of the unfriendly journals tofalsify the cncunistance in the case andto rouse the popular i.nhgnation. Theiehas been, however, a pood deal of se-rious dis ussion on the subject, and I amcompell. d to say that, even anions thewarmest sympathizerswith the Norththere appears to be but one conclusioniand that is, that the capture of the Flo-rida was unwarrantable, and not to bejustified under any circumstances.'At the same time, the impression isquite as general that the authorities at>. ashington will, of their own accordpromptly disavowthe act of the captainof the Wachusett and make theproperapologyand.reparation to the Govern-ment, of Bra?.iL It is proper to sayhowever, that we have only the South-ern version of the affair, and that toomuch dependencemust not be placed onthe unsupported testimony of the com-mander of the Florida, who will, of Icourse, make the best ofhis tale. You Jwill have received what'purports to be Ithe official corresponder.ie on the* sub-ject, and'be in possession,of all the facts jbefore we are. A NOTABLE DAY,h of November has again comeA ' It is, ycu arc aware, a dou-ersnry, being Lord Mayor's dayirthday of .thePrince of?Wales!Mayor's show differed littleof former years, f-ince thewateri to Westminster was abolished, tpal thoroughfare of the cityied up for two or three hours. issage of the stupidest of allprocessions, and the civic proceedingsterminated with the usual aldermanicfeast at theGu'.dhall. The usual speecheswere there made, some of them by HerMajesty'sministers, and Load Palmerstonhad the bad taste to indulgein one of hrstereotyped slurs against the United IStates. » ?

The rejoicings, so far as the Prince ofWales was concerned, were of a moreextensive and hearty character thanusual. The Prince bissseif wasat Wind-sor Castle, as the Queen persists in neversetting foot in London it she can poasiblj avoid it, but the btdls rang through-out the day, and the illuminations atnight were numerous and gorgeous. ThePrince seems daily'growing in the affeetions of the people. Certainly he andhis wife spend the .quarter of a milliondollar the people furnish them yearlyout of their own pockets in the" mosteasy ana graceful manner. They payLord Derby a visit next week, and after-wards retire until Christmas to theirseatjhi Norfolk. ? ,
