Daily Evangelization

The lighting of the first candle on our

wreath is a visual reminder that this is the

First Sunday of Advent, the number one day of

a New Year in the Church’s liturgical life. We

are invited to journey with the Lord and to unite our lives with His.

The early days of Advent remind us that our time is limited in this

world; we are preparing for a life that is eternal. The later days of

Advent focus on the Christmas story—God’s love for us made

manifest in His Son. For the first two months of 2019, we will hear

from St Luke about the opening days of our Lord’s public ministry.

During March, we will begin our six weeks of Lent. (I have asked

Father Ryan Mann—associate here at St Charles 2014-2018—to

offer our annual Parish Lenten Retreat). After Holy Week and

Easter in April, there will be fifty days of Eastertime until

Pentecost. In June, we return to Ordinary Time and to the events

of our Lord’s public ministry until the liturgical year ends for 2019

on November 30. Scattered throughout 2019 there will be opportu-

nities for us to grow in holiness—along with both planned and

unexpected events in our lives. May it be said that we have grown

in our love for God and for one another. And at the end of the up-

coming New Year, may we find things as we would wish them to be.

Next Saturday, December 8, is the Solemnity of the

Immaculate Conception and a holyday of obligation. For your

convenience, there will be one Vigil Mass on Friday, December 7,

at 7:00pm. There will be two Masses on the Saturday,

December 8 holyday at 8:00am and 10:00am.

Under the title of the Immaculate Conception, the Blessed

Mother is patroness of the United States. The first “ceiling saint”

on the left, nearest the sanctuary, is dedicated to the Immaculate

Conception. And what are the colors of that painting? Why, “red,

white, and blue” of course!

Please remember to purchase your weekly “gas and groceries”

and do your holiday shopping with St Charles Gift Certificates.

Just stop by the Parish Office.

There was a wealth of information in last week’s bulletin about

our 2018 Advent Giving Tree. That information can also be found

on the church bulletin boards. This year we are helping Edna

House (for those committed to overcoming addictions),

Providence House (emergency shelter for children, newborn to age

five), West Side Catholic Center (caring for those in need of food,

clothing, and shelter), and Malachi House (hospice for the dying

homeless). Check the “Wish Lists.” Select your gift and place it

before the BVM or Holy Family Shrines in church. All gifts will be

collected, sorted, and delivered at 1:00pm on Sunday,

December 16.

Do you have some ideas or suggestions about parish life here at

St Charles? If you do, let our Parish Council know. Jot down

what’s on your mind and leave that note in the Suggestion Box

found in the Wilber Avenue lobby of the church.

Parma Hospital has now fully integrated their computer system

into the computer system of University Hospital. So now, if you

are admitted to Parma, you must specify that you are Catholic and

that you would welcome a visit from St Charles staff. If you do not

specify, due to the strict rules of HIPAA, we will not be able to find

you. When we visit, we are given the “St Charles List.” That list

will have your name on it only if you told the Admitting Officer that

you are Catholic and that you are open to a visit.

During December, many parishioners contact our Parish Business Office asking about end-of-year charitable gifts. To answer your questions, our Parish Finance Council has assembled the suggestions given below.

Cash: Write a check, payable to St Charles Borromeo Parish, and send it to the parish before December 31 2018. You may be entitled to a charitable deduction; check with your tax adviser.

Long-term Appreciated Securities: Appreciated Securities you have held longer than one year can be transferred from your brokerage or custody account to St Charles. You receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction of the full market value of your contribution; most important, any capital gains tax to you is eliminated. Again, check with your tax adviser.

Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to Make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): If you are 70 ½ years, you may be expected to make a RMD from your IRA. You can make a QCD of up to $100,000 of your RMD to St Charles Parish without including the distribution in your income. The rules are specific; consult and see if it is right for you.

Bequests: A bequest is a written instruction in your Last Will and Testament or Trust document to distribute cash, securities, land, or any other asset controlled by that document, to a charity. The bequest must be written and the gift can be expressed as a dollar amount, a specific number of shares of a security, a specific asset, or a percentage of your estate. Specify “St Charles Borromeo Parish, Parma, Ohio.”

Beneficiary Designation for IRA, 401K, 403B, or other Retirement Plan: The above retirement plans allow you to name a charity as a beneficiary of the plan assets at the time of your death. Contact your IRA custodian or Plan administrator to obtain a “beneficiary designation form.” The allocation can be a dollar amount or a percentage. Beneficiaries have no rights until your death, and all payments must be made as you directed. Again, consult with your tax adviser.

Beneficiary Designation

for Life Insurance and Annuities: The recipients of insurance and annuity proceeds will be those persons listed as the beneficiaries. Contact the company issuing the insurance or annuity to obtain a “beneficiary designation form.” Beneficiaries have no rights until your death and all payments must be made as you direct.

Other Planned Gift Options: A “Payable on Death” designation is a written instruction to a bank providing the name or charity to receive the balance in the account on the death of the depositor. A “Transfer on Death” is similar but it applies to brokerage accounts, individual securities, bonds, mutual funds, or motor vehicles. A “Transfer upon Death Affidavit” is a sworn document recorded in the county recorder’s office naming the person or charity to receive real estate upon the death of the owner. Since 1988, St Charles parishioners have been most generous and have directed gifts to the parish in all of the ways listed above. Because of their generosity, we are blessed to provide a large number of helping ministries. Those who came before us have done so much; now it is our turn to provide for those who will follow us. In addition to St Charles Borromeo Parish, gifts from the sources described above may also be specifically directed to:

St Charles Borromeo Education Foundation

St Charles Borromeo Vocation Scholarships

St Charles Borromeo Youth Group Trust

St Charles Borromeo Sanctuary Memorial Fund

Charitable Gifts To St. Charles Parish for our

Current and Future Needs
