ABOUT THE SOCIETY

Indian Society of Engineering Geology (ISEG) is a professional and scientific forum comprising members from the fields of Geology, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Sciences, rep-resenting almost all the leading organizations engaged in various infrastructural and developmental projects in India. J. B. Auden established Engineering Geology in Geological Survey of India in the year 1945. As the work increased, the need for interaction and bringing the experts under one umbrella was felt. Subsequently, the Indi-an Society of Engineering Geology was formed and inaugurated by Dr. K. L. Rao, the then Union Minister of Irri-gation and Power on October 15, 1965 at Kolkata. The first President of the society was Dr. D.N. Wadia, the doy-en of Indian geology. It is noteworthy that the society remains not only confined to classical engineering geology but also encourages geotechnical engineering, soil and rock mechanics, environmental geology, surface and ground water hydrology, mining, explorations, testing and related specializations. ISEG completed five decades of glorious service to the nation in October 2015 and celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the same year. The society is affiliated to International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environ-ment (IAEG) and is known as IAEG India National Group in international forum. ISEG has regularly been organiz-ing seminars/ symposia and workshops in India focusing on varied aspects of Engineering Geology. The main aim of organizing such technical conclaves is to provide a common platform for technical interactions and discussion amongst the best-available professionals and academicians of our country and abroad engaged in different fields of Engineering Geology and Geotechniques. Technical papers are invited from the experts engaged in these fields; the accepted papers will be later on published in the Journal of Engineering Geology – the flagship journal of ISEG. Apart from the above, in all such conferences, after brain-storming sessions, ISEG compiles and pre-pares suggestions and recommendations, which guide us in planning upcoming events.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

ISEG will organize a three day “National Conference on Prospects and Retrospect in Engineering Geolo-gy, Geophysics and Instrumentation” at Hyderabad, India on 3-5 December, 2018 in association with Geo-logical Survey of India, on themes of Engineering Geological investigations of various mega civil engineering works carried out so far and works in progress in the country with a special focus on southern part of the coun-try. As a number of infrastructure projects of national importance are in progress in Southern States, especially in Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh States, it is apt and pertinent to conduct a National Conference at the mo-ment on related themes at Hyderabad. Efforts are also on to rope in major and important organizations and insti-tutions related to the subject.

Government of Telangana and Government of Andhra Pradesh have taken up several water resource develop-ment projects in the states, many of them are in active construction stage. Some of the projects are of national importance and some other projects gained importance because of their unique geotechnical issues associated with them. Engineering Geological investigations of many of those projects have been rendered by Geological Survey of India. Names of a few projects are mentioned below for reference. Kaleswaram Lift irrigation Project, Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme, Palamuru Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme, Aleminety Madhava Reddy SLBC Scheme are in Telangana State. Polavaram Irrigation Project, Galeru Nagari Sujala Sravanthi Scheme, Handri Niva Sujala Sravanthi Scheme, Veligonda Project, Vamsadhara Project and Taraka Rama Theeratha Sagaram Pro-ject are located in Andhra Pradesh State. As it is a rare opportunity to have so many river valley, lift and hydro electric projects are under active investiga-tion and construction simultaneously in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh States, and several geoscientists, engi-neers and industry personnel associated with those projects are stationed in Hyderabad, besides several related organizations, companies and institutions directly dealing with those projects, it is contemplated to organize a National Conference where a common platform can be created to assemble, present and debate several common issues and arrive a comprehension and help to resolve a few very important and pertinent issues and bring out a few resolutions. It is also proposed to call for a discussion during the Conference on natural hazards, especially landslides and earthquakes. It is also endeavored to flag themes like status of instrumentation in river valley and/or hydel pro-jects, advancements in geophysics as an effective tool to unravel geology and Geotechniques present within the earth’s crust.

ABOUT HYDERABAD

Hyderabad, capital city of Telangana State, hav-ing a urban agglomeration population about 7 crores, is located on the Musi River on a plateau, a major upland region of the Deccan Peninsular India. The city site is relatively level to the gently rolling terrain, at an elevation of about 500 m. The climate is warm to hot and monsoonal with moderate annual precipitation.

Hyderabad has become a hub of trade and com-merce and an international centre for information technology, Pharmaceuticals, and textiles are among the items manufactured there. Tourism has grown in significance. The city has long been associated with the production of Telugu-language films, which gave rise to its nickname Tollywood. The city has many tourist attractions, such as, Salar Jung Museum, public gardens, zoo-logical gardens and botanical gardens, Charmi-nar, Chowmahalla Palace, Laad Bazaar, Mecca Masjid, Golconda Fort, Hussain Sagar Lake, Ni-zam Museum, Ramoji Film City, etc.

INVITATION

Dear Colleagues

The country has achieved several mile stones in infrastructure development since Independence, and so has been spectacular progress of Engineering Geology. After very successful organization of Golden jubilee celebrations of our society as well as journal through EGNM-2015 and EGCON-2017 at New Delhi, we strive towards south to have a national conference (EGCON-2018) in the beautiful city of Hyderabad. I take this opportunity to invite geol-ogists, engineering geologists, geophysicists, Instrumentation Engineers, Software Developers, civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, mining engineers, academicians, research scholars and students to make technical contri-butions through papers and attend this conference. Regular updates and subsequent circulars shall be available through ISEG website: www.isegindia.org.

With Kind Regards,

Prof. K. S. Rao President, ISEG
