Cassington, then and now

Interested to see how Cassington has evolved over the years? Or do you have any old photos of the village you wish to share? If so, search ‘Cassington, then and now’ on Facebook and feel free to join the group!

Kevin's CAWNer 2017 is well underway and everyone's lives are getting

busy judging by the variety of events been spoken about in this month's edition.

It's so easy to get wrapped up in our own lives we lose sight of the bigger village, country and national picture. Hopefully this publication helps you learn more about the village picture and the odd County story that will impact our lives in Cassington. Do let me know your thoughts and opinions on various events and developments.

I still dream about sharing updates on the sporting and exercise activities of the village - it's an important part of a balanced life style and yet something this publication talks very little of. Here we are talking about the desire to improve the facilities up at the sports field and yet silent on what we're already achieving in our personal pursuits. I look forward to reading about the efforts of at least the village youngsters in future editions.

We are a wonderful community here in Cassington but circumstances have shown we perhaps need a Neighbourhood Watch arrangement. See page 17 and let us know your thoughts.

Till next month - happy reading. Kevin

West Oxfordshire: Too good to lose? Residents in West Oxfordshire are being warned the

proposed creation of a ‘super council’ could see council tax rise, services decline and spell the end of free parking.

Oxfordshire County Council is promoting ideas for the creation of a single unitary authority that would sweep away existing district councils.

But Cllr James Mills, leader of West Oxfordshire District

Council, believes a unitary council would fail to recognise the specifi c needs of local residents and be unable to attract much-needed funding for housing, infrastructure and leisure.

He said: “Our residents appreciate the fact that we have the lowest council tax in Oxfordshire and off er services such as free parking which are of huge benefi t to everyone.

“Th e County’s proposals will involve creating a whole new council which would take at least two years. Meanwhile, our roads become ever more potholed, social care shrinks still further and rural bus services continue to disappear.”

Cllr Mills is in favour of the creation of a combined

authority model with a local mayor which would pave the way for devolution, unlocking central government funds for major infrastructure improvements.

He added: “Rather than spending huge amounts of taxpayers’ money on the new council which will undoubtedly increase council tax, we would be able to keep the effi cient services and great benefi ts residents already enjoy as well as delivering the housing and infrastructure that is needed in the short-term.”

Observation by Stephen Wright

Having been a uni student for a fair amount of time now, I have attended a reasonable amount of clubs. It got me thinking, why do people even go clubbing in the fi rst place?

Everything is against you from the outset were you to decide to go clubbing. People consume liquids they proudly proclaim that they dislike, and go out in the freezing cold to dance to the same drum & bass playlist they heard last week.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m prone to the odd club now and again and have had a good time visiting them, but we went to a club called Toast the other day and didn’t even get any toast. False advertising at its fi nest. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised when we entered the club - having queued outside for 16 hours - to hear the music that was being played. Th e Fratellis and Th e Killers were among the kinds of rock bands being blasted out the speakers, before the DJ announced that it was time to return to drum & bass. Boring normality restored.

It’s easy to see why some people love to go clubbing all the time, but personally I would rather have a night in having fun with friends because that way you can actually communicate with them. I don’t know if I’m crazy, but there’s something about staying in and having a good time that sounds almost better than pretending to understand what people are saying and making the appropriate gestural reactions before entering bed at 5am.

It’s amazing how the youthful lifestyle can pull the rug from under you occasionally. For instance, even when the group of young men and women I call friends decide to go out for one beer at the local Wetherspoon’s, we somehow end up pretending to enjoy loud drum and bass music at a fl at party 5 hours later. It’s got to the stage where I nap during the day to re-energise myself for the endurance required to go out. But of course, it catches up with you. One night, my friend Jonathan wanted a couple of us to go out with him. I told him that fi rst I had to watch the fi nal episode of Th e Grand Tour, and once I had done that I accidentally fell asleep. I am sorry Jonathan. It’s not me, it’s the lifestyle.

I guess I just fi nd it peculiar that at a time in life when we have degrees to obtain and employers to impress, our sleeping and eating patterns have never been more un-stable. If there is one place that couldn’t have prepared me for this lifestyle, it’s Cassington, but it is nice to go back from time to time, to get the best of both worlds.

I’m sure all of this is music to the ears of my parents and grandparents, but they can rest assured that I am a well behaved student who doesn’t fall into the typical demographic. Mostly. All in all, I do like the university life, but it’s just a bit weird, perhaps never more so than when we visited a 24/7 ASDA late at night and I purchased nothing more than a Peppa Pig kinder egg.

Roy’s ramblings

There nearly wasn’t a Ramblings this month. I had to get over the miseries, having just gone through an uneasy time. I think I am going to live a bit longer. I have found the power of prayer very comforting.

The news one reads does not help much. When you see what is happening with the sea’s, we all thought it too large to affect, over fishing by massive trawlers, thus starving lots of small people, all by big groups making money, to the expense of others. Pollution on grand scale.

Then the introduction of more Robots, taking jobs. Who will earn the money to buy the products they make? They may be cheaper but if you can’t earn a wage you still can’t buy. The bottom line is the important thing.

Another thought: when one looks at mass of folk going to football matches, etc. on a Sunday, to start off with a prayer of thank-you for 5 minutes. You see as a youngster during the war, a lot more folk took the trouble, when we were up against it.

Ah well, an old man’s thoughts.Another point. It was always said man will invent his

own destruction. It was the atom bomb but that is old hat now. I think it is rubbish and pollution, especially plastic. It does not seem to rot and go away.

Sorry not to be more cheerful. God bless you all. He must be looking down and thinking “What do I do with that lot down there?”

FLAT 73By Gaye Poole with Music by Arne Richards

A one hour play about loneliness and the Samaritans with an accompanying Q and A with local volunteer organisations who support lonely people (e.g the Samaritans and Age UK) and are

trying to reach different communities.

Battersby Buildings has 75 flats, so at least 75 people live there and yet very few know each other. Beryl aged 68 years and recently widowed lives on the ground floor, daytime television her only companion. In the flats above her lives Chelsea aged 18 years, not long out of care and struggling as a new single mum to Albie a colicky 18 month old. Along the corridor from her lives Simon, a young man with learning disabilities and a sunny disposition with a passion for ‘flashmobbing’. On the top floor lives Laura who, unbeknownst to them, connects them all in her role as a Samaritan – they all call Laura when they are feeling at their loneliest. The play sees these lonely characters going about their daily lives, passing each other ‘unseen’ until one fateful day when Laura’s past catches up with her and her resultant final actions cause them all to come together.

A delightfully upbeat comedy written by Kate Bramley with songs from Jez Lowe

Eddie. Is back.

It’s the 1960’s and every village in England has a band determined to hit the big time. This tale follows our Eddie, a hard-working milkman, inspired by the cream of the pop charts and tired of the milk-float of ordinary life, dreaming of stardom and success but money lenders, managers and real life just keep on getting in the way. Will his dreams be thwarted, as his career takes a churn for the worse?

Get ready, Eddie, go! You’re heading for the high life, with the fabulous Gold Tops behind you every step of the way!

This fantastically successful show from 2012 with songs from the award-winning writer Jez Lowe and innovative design from Charlie Cridlan.

Easter Bonnet Parade We will be holding our annual Easter Bonnet Parade and Easter Tea on Thursday 6th April at 2pm at the school. All welcome. Year 3 Dance One of the benefits of being an Academy has been the way in which the primaries have been able to benefit from close links to Bartholomew School. This is evident in the joint opportunities put on by Bartholomew specifically those to do with developing their Sports Leaders. Last month there were two such opportunities: dance and gymnastics. I went with the Year 4 children to the Sports Hall to a lively session led by Nadia Pharoan and other Step2 Dance leaders. The students from Bartholomew supported the younger children from each primary school by encouraging them to participate in the street dance movements. It was fascinating to watch the enthusiasm of the children and their development of skills. It was also good to see the end dance which included a little ‘free style’ for the more confident ones. New Incumbent Interviews Our School Council was called upon to take part in the interviews for the new vicar for Cassington and Eynsham. I am sure that there will be mentions of this event in this months edition of the CAWN but it is worth saying that I was very proud of the children and the professional way they conducted themselves. The eight children from year 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 each put a question to each of the five candidates and made notes of their responses. The questions, which the children thought of, ranged from ‘Why do you want to be our vicar?’ to ‘How would you lead Collective Worship on our values?’ At the end of the day I fed back their thoughts to the interviewing panel. Chinese Themes

Three classes focused on China last term: the Foundation found out about Chinese New Year, Oak Class took the book ‘The Magic Paintbrush’ and explored all things Chinese and Willow Class looked at the Shang Dynasty. Both Oak and Willow Class took advantage of the wonderful Chinese artefacts display at the Ashmolean and had an education talk as well. Oak Class stayed in Oxford and went to a Chinese Restaurant for the full Chinese Experience. Oak Class also experienced a Chinese Yoga session led by Vicky Clarke-Thomas.

WANTED We currently have a vacancy for a Foundation Governor in our school so if you have a Christian commitment and are interested then please contact the school office for further details. You do not have to be involved in education but should be willing to attend meetings throughout the year.

Stay and Play If you have a child who is two we offer Play and Stay sessions once a month. The cost is £2 a session and the next one will be on Wednesday 15th March between 2 and 3pm. Just come along and join in the fun!

Within our Nursery at St Peter’s Church of England School we provide education and care for children from three to five years. Funded places are available. For further information or to arrange a visit please contact the school office.

Th e curious workings of the Church of England.Or “Where are we now?”

Well, on 1st February a short list of 5 very strong candidates were taken through a rigorous interview process. One candidate was unanimously chosen from the fi ve and our new vicar was appointed. His name is Duncan Fraser. Duncan is married to Carmen and they have two children, Caleb and Scarlet. Duncan will take up his post sometime aft er Easter depending on practical arrangements and I’m sure that the family will make themselves known in the villages when they arrive.

Will it mean changes? I don’t know. In most walks of life, when there is new management there are usually some changes – oft en for the better. Fresh eyes and fresh ideas can bring a wind of change that is dynamic and empowering, revitalising an organisation and giving new energy.

One thing I do know is that we will still worship Jesus Christ who the bible says “is the same yesterday, today and forever”. (Hebrews chapter 13 verse 8 (page 257 in your Jubilee New Testament)). In our rapidly changing world it is a great thing to know that some things and some people remain the same.

Th ere’s a hymn that you might remember, which goes:

Great is the faithfulness, O God my Father,

Th ere is no shadow of turning with Th ee.

Th ou changest not, thy compassions they fail not;

As Th ou hast been Th ou forever wilt be.

2016 was a successful year of consolidation for the hall. We sustained our fairly solid pattern of bookings from repeat customers and added some welcome new ones, whilst everyone reaped the benefits of the many refurbishment projects we had carried out the year before.

Our income from hall lettings for the year was up by over 8% at £14,132 (£13,015 in 2015) which is starting to get back to where we were in 2014 (£14,928). Our revenue from events was substantially lower at £2,673 (£4,328 in 2015) as it’s been proving difficult to attract original live events since the touring theatre companies lost their subsidies. But our events do continue to make a profit, which is good news. Our income from donations was down too at £210 (£1,360 in 2015), so overall our total income for the year was down at £17,057 (£18,732 in 2015). But we spent less this year, and our expenditure before depreciation was just £12,033 (£19,834 in 2015). After allowing for the annual depreciation of £2,964, that leaves net incoming resources of £2,060 (net outgoing was minus £4,066 in 2015). So in cash terms we improved our healthy position and finished well up on the year.

Although we had no major refurbishment costs in 2016, there was a steady flow of expenditure on minor repairs and maintenance that goes on week in and week out - from flickering exit lights to new cutlery (many thanks to Cassington Cafe for their donation). In total we spent £1,029 (£7,520 in 2015) on repairs and renewals.

Great thanks are due to the whole team involved, starting with our dedicated manager Nicky Copelin and cleaner Kathryn Teal, who we’re going to miss hugely when she leaves us this coming Spring. Our hard-working team of trustees

continues to be Events Organiser Ruth Bakewell, Secretary Penny Burroughs, Treasurer Lorna Mills, Buildings Officer Frank Nelson, acting Deputy Chair Bryan Partridge, Jan Faulkner, Bridget Sherlock, Malcolm Teal and Di Williams. Thank you all for everything you do for the hall - not least the much-savoured Bike Night bacon butty counter.

The village hall is a registered charity and relies totally on income from bookings and donations to keep the place going. We receive no state subsidies of any kind and depend on the goodwill, time and energy of many volunteers. The hall is effectively owned by the village and run by the village for the benefit of the village.

We will soon be facing more big expenditure, such as the heating system which may need major attention this year. So we can’t rest easy, and to help us plan for the future we are launching the Patrons of Cassington Village Hall. If you value the hall at the heart of our community and wish to see it kept in the best possible condition for everyone to enjoy, both today and tomorrow, then please consider joining us. By becoming a Patron, you can make a tax-efficient donation of as little as £10 a year to help towards the upkeep of the building and its facilities. If you’re a tax-payer, you can Gift Aid your donation so that as a registered charity we can reclaim the tax and increase the value of your gift at no cost to you. Every £10 you give could be worth £12.50 to the village hall. So please do consider becoming a Patron in 2017.

Thank you to all our customers and donors.

CASSINGTON WI FEBRUARY MEETING

The business section of our Meeting came after our Speaker this month as he had travelled quite a distance to get here. Di Williams our Vice President introduced Roger Powell who told us about ‘Royal Mistresses’.

Royal Mistresses and Roger he told us about many of them throughout history, were very often intelligent and full of character coming from well known families who had fallen on hard times and the girls had no dowry. They invariably had a carefully thought out plan as to how to be noticed by the King and how to hold onto their position particularly while they were giving birth on a fairly regular basis. Many were already married and would have children from their husbands as well. Nell Gwyn and Mrs Jordan didn't come into this category and were both poor but had the charisma to entertain.

Barbara Villiers was an interesting mistress of Charles 11, often painted by Sir Peter Lely and with whom she had 5 children all of which were acknowledged by the King and recognised by the name FitzRoy. Her influence was referred to as the ‘Uncrowned Queen’. The Villiers family throughout the ages provided many mistresses for future reigning kings.

Sheila Nelson gave the vote of thanks… Ann Humphris and Wilmine Winstone served refreshments.

We completed our business and noted that our next Meeting is on 16th March and is our AGM followed by Supper. Please note that 25TH MARCH IS OUR SPRING ‘JUMBLE SALE’.

Construction on a new bus lane and park-and-ride west of Oxford could begin in September

2018, according to the council.Oxfordshire County Council said it hoped to complete the

design of the 1,000-space park-and-ride and transport route by next year.

The authority has said it needs to invest £3m to develop the project, which would be recouped from the Department for Transport. The project would cost about £36m.

A council spokesman said the project would "provide a congestion-free route for public transport on the A40" approaching Oxford.

Eynsham is the proposed site of the 1,000-space park-and-ride.

Council leader Ian Hudspeth said: "The kind of improvements we are proposing will be another step change for improving journeys following the completion of the A40 Wolvercote and Cutteslowe roundabouts."

In addition, a stretch of road from Witney to Eynsham could become a dual carriageway.

The cabinet will vote on proposals to spend £3m on designing the project.

A spokesman said the funding was needed to secure £35m of investment from the Department for Transport.

The spokesman added: "The detailed design is scheduled to be completed in April 2018, following which the construction contractor will be appointed and construction works forecasted to start in September 2018."

Churchfields Care HomeChurchfields Care Home has a busy start to the New

Year!We have been busy with activities, celebrations and

outings over the past few weeks and we are now looking forward to planning for the warmer months of spring.

The Chequers Inn has made us all feel welcome with our new regular coffee mornings. This outing is proving to be very popular with our residents. Members of the community are also invited and it would be great for our residents and staff to meet you all. More details are below.

Burns Night and Valentines kept our chef and kitchen staff busy as they prepared tasty, themed meals and treats for us all. With any of our themed events, residents were highly engaged with the preparation and enjoyed learning about the different cultures and traditions.

Our residents have also enjoyed a host of exciting activities and visitors, including singers and entertainers, keeping fit, flower arranging and trips into the village.

Churchfields has lots more exciting outings and activities planned and as always we welcome the community to join us, or to make suggestions of how we could engage with each other.

Dates for your diary:

Coffee morning: Every Wednesday at 11am, Chequers Inn. Join us for a coffee and chat. £3 for coffee, re-fill and biscuits.

CASSINGTON RESIDENTS PLEASE READ: BE VIGILANT FOLKS, NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

As has been previously reported in the CAWN and social media, there has been a recent spate of thefts from Cassington resident's garages, sheds and drives. We are the sort of village who don't feel the need to keep bikes etc under lock and key at all times of night and day, but it would seem, that this sort of vigilance is necessary.

Following some serious acts of theft on The Tennis, Elms Road and Bell Lane, some residents have been excersising an informal neighbourhood watch scheme. Look out for vans/trailers slowly cruising looking for unlocked garages and bikes left without locks. We have seen cases of this type of thing in broad daylight several times over the past few months. Sometimes, the thieves even wear high visibility clothing to look like official workers.

There is a Facebook page called "Cassington Family Group", please join if you can - here, residents have made efforts to alert others of suspicious looking vehicles and in some instances this information has led to being helpful to the police. A few times it was noticed that the number plates on such vehicles have not matched up to the correct vehicle when investigated online ie. stolen or uninsured vehicles.

So, please keep a watch out, if you see anything suspicious it is worth taking a photo if possible. And above all, keep garages and sheds locked at all times. We can all look out for each other.

It has also been suggested residents should attend next Parish Council meeting to get a real Neighbourhood Watch thing going.
