R E F L E C T I O N S
Jesus’ free decision to be made for a brief while ‘lower than the angels’ set in motion a course of events in which abasement and humiliation were the necessary prelude to exaltation. His coronation with glory and splendor provides assurance that the power of sin and death has been broken; consequently, men and women will yet be led to the full enjoyment of the glory God intended for them.
~ William Lane If we know and see a peer endure an illness or a frightening episode with dignity and courage, we are then more able to endure it ourselves. When the one who suffers ahead of us is human, we are inspired. When the one who suffers ahead of us, and dies, is fully God and fully human, that suffering and that death are transformed, and we are free from whatever bonds of fear we had before.
~ Lisa Fishbeck It encourages us to see Jesus not as the kind of older brother whom we resent because he’s always getting things right and being successful while we’re always getting things wrong and failing, but as the kind of older brother who, without a trace of patronizing or looking down his nose at us, comes to find us where we are, out of sheer love and goodness of heart, and to help us out of our mess.
~ N.T. Wright Now here is the wonder of the Son of Man: the loving relationship that the Son has always enjoyed with his Father he now brings to us. When he becomes a man, for the first time a human being enjoys the Son’s own fellowship with and standing before the Father. In Jesus, for the first time there is a human being living in perfect fellowship with God. Loving God with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength, loving his neighbor as himself, he is the first ever to keep and fulfill the law of God... Christ remains utterly loyal to God. Nobody had heard of such a thing before: a faithful human... This is what Jesus brings to share with humanity: his own sonship, and his own relationship and life with his Father.
~ Michael Reeves Jesus destroys the fear of death by entering the very death that we fear and then breaking its neck.
~ Sinclair Ferguson

LEADER: Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God together by praying— UNISON: O Lord, we are not worthy to have a glimpse of heaven, and unable with
our works to redeem ourselves from sin, death, the devil, and hell. For this we rejoice, praise and thank you, O God, that without price and out of pure grace you have granted us this boundless blessing in your dear Son through whom you take sin, death, and hell from us, and give us all that belongs to him. We beg you to forgive us all our sins and the wrong we have done for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Please take a moment to silently confess your individual sins.
q Assurance of Pardon 1 JOHN 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

p C R E E D LEADER: How do we know God?
PEOPLE: We know God in two ways: LEFT: First, by the creation, preservation, and government of the universe. RIGHT: Second, by his holy and divine Word. LEADER: How is grace applied to the lives of God’s chosen people?
PEOPLE: Without deserving it at all, out of sheer grace God grants and credits to us the perfect satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness of Christ.
LEADER: Where does grace come from?
PEOPLE: Grace is a gift of God. All we need to do is to accept this gift of God with believing hearts.
LEADER: Who saves us from our sins?
PEOPLE: Jesus saves us from our sins. Salvation cannot be found in anyone else; it is futile to look for any salvation elsewhere.
LEADER: What is the chief end of man?
PEOPLE: To glorify God, and to enjoy him forever. LEADER: Let us, then, glorify God. Let us glorify God for Scripture, for grace, for
faith, for Jesus.
p Let Your Kingdom Come
p G O S P E L LUKE 18:9-14 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” LEADER: The Gospel of the Lord. PEOPLE: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

q P R A Y E R LEADER: Almighty God, we come before you with gratitude in our hearts for the
work which you enabled your servant, Martin Luther, to accomplish. Through him you brought into clearer focus the unique authority of your Word and the comforting message of salvation by grace through faith. Assist us to cherish the Gospel and to live in submission to the Bible. We pray this in Christ’s name, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, through all eternity. Amen.
q O F F E R I N G 1 TIMOTHY 6:17-19 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. Please fill in the pew attendance pad, pass it down the pew and then back.
q The Church’s One Foundation
Children, ages 4 - 7 years, are dismissed to be walked over to the first floor of the Harvest House for Children’s Worship Training.

q P R O C L A M A T I O N HEBREWS 2:5-18 5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. 6 It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? 7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. 9 But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. LEADER: This is the Word of the Lord. PEOPLE: Thanks be to God.

Join us in our Fellowship Hall from 6-8:00pm Sunday, November 10. Dessert will be provided.
New Adult Sunday Classes Begin Nov. 3 Decisions, Decisions, and the Will of God Why did God make decision-making part of our lives? What is the goal of decision-making? Do I need to “find” God’s will in order to make a good decision, and what is the definition of a good decision? What am I to think when what looks like a good decision goes bad? In light of God’s sovereignty, does it even matter what decision I make? During this 6-week class we will be working to build convictions around these questions and more. New Member Class A 6-week New Member Class, taught by Rev. Luke Le Duc, will begin on Nov. 3 and will meet in the Fellowship Hall. This class will explore what it means to be a member at Wheatland. Attendance does not obligate you to join, but it is required for those who are seeking membership. Contact Betsy at [email protected] or sign up in the Narthex. Galatians Paul's letter to the Galatian churches is among the earliest of his epistles. But the issues facing those churches; false teaching, moral law, and the reality of the Gospel, have continued to affect the Church throughout history until today. Meeting in the Augustine Room of the Harvest House, Steve Osborne leads this discussion-oriented class to focus on historical events leading up to Paul's writing of this epistle along with a fresh look at how we can apply it to our day-to-day lives.
