afternoon in the courthouse ad- v ¬ General Albert W Gifchrlst- Csndldacy s for governor It is evident that the Gilchrist forces are on the defensive for Mr Pope laid great h I stress on the legislative records of both Mr Gilchrist and Mr Stockton and their attitude on the liquor ques- tion ¬ Mr Pope insisted that Mr Gil ¬ i christ had always been a consistent temperance man never signed a whis- ky ¬ petition or voted a wet ticket That fought the wets in DeSoto couifty I + is t in the legislature he voted against r the indefinite postponement of a reso- lution ¬ submitting the question of a It prohibition amendment to the consti- tution ¬ which = parliamentary usage ter dares in the same as voting for the la position ij tnn sized up Stock ¬ tons stock in trade along of that city had failed by their votes to give Mr Stockton who for years had been living in that city their confidence and being discredit = cd at home he could not ask for sup- port ¬ in the country By contrast ha spoke of the loyal and almost unani ¬ mous support given Gilchrist in his home county of DeSoto He then re- ferred ¬ t othe dangerous three friends combination Brpward Stockton and Parrs who had built up a dangerous combination which should avoided be- cause ¬ if they succeeded they would fasten on the state what they had fastened on Jacksonville He rapped the Jacksonville ministerial alliance saying it was uncalled for and unjust- to Mr Gilchrist The attendance was light probably a hundred person BITTINGER AND LIGHT AT SUMMERFIELD AND BELLEVIEW I T Messrs Light and Bittinger candi- dates ¬ for the legislature in the sec- ond ¬ primary vlsit Summerfield and Belleview Saturday afternoon to fur ¬ ther their efforts to reach the legisla- ture ¬ lrIrA D Mitchell of Summer field met us at the station and pre tented us with the liberty of the place The crowd was not large but enthus- iasm ¬ vas evident It was a section meeting as not more than a dozen persons attention could be secured at one time as everybody was busy load ¬ ing cantaloupes tomatoes and water uielons so the candidates simply turn- ed ¬ loose and impressed every voter with the fact that the man who had the ear of the voter was it After sev ¬ eral hours spent in this manner we secured transportation and hied away- to Belleview where we were splendid ¬ ly and delightfully ertained by Mr and Mrs C A Tremere Thq meet ¬ ing was called to order on the steps of Mr Tremeres store and Judge Hop- kins introduced the candidates who received a splendid hearing The in- terest ¬ in discussion developed unusual interest in the questions propounded- by Bittinger to Light why he possess ¬ pGsuperlor wisdom to Dr Porter in criticising Porters administration of the State Board of Health assert- ing ¬ he Light could run the same on expense of 40000 when Dr Porter asked for an appropriation of 64000 Mr Light was too modest altogether it > say he was an equal authority on epidemics apd how to suppress them but he knew that in Mime of peace to spend the amount of money charged- up to the State Board of Health was nothing less than sinful waste Of course Lights contention is reduction- of expenses no matter whether his reason for the same is sane and safe lie made as a special plea for his elec ¬ tion that he was a farmer knew their interests and he alone could minister tc their wants When asked if Mr W D Carn was not engaged in the same business Mr Light hadevidently not heard of it but insisted Mr Carn was superintendent of schools He also laid great stress on the fact that as both Carn and Bittinger came from Ocala it would be a discrimination to send two men from the town and ig rore the country as twothirds of the taxation came from the country ignor- ing the fact that according to his mode or reasoning if elected he would have- to legislate for twothirds of the wealth of the county 1 and Mr Carn I would only be burdened with Ocalas interests Mr Light could not dis- associate ¬ his legislative duties if elect- ed ¬ wholely and solely to the protec- tion of the county lambs but failed to state what specifically those needs were and the remedy he had up his farmers assist in conducting the cere- monies ¬ of decorating the graves Mr Owen is commander of this camp He was assisted by Adjutant Bumby of ot the- Waters Daisy section also Comrade and Chaplain J M Moffett who made a beautiful and touching prayer and later was one of the speak- ers ¬ and told a very touching incident of the battlefield of Shiloh which I battle Mr Moffett participated in I The editor of this paper spoke of the influences of the years that have pass- ed since the bloody and terrible days- of 188165 How time assuages the i deep sorrows and modifies the feelings- and thoughts postmaster in Ocala in the early 80s This aged couple are bearing their years with unusual fortitude and growing old gracefully and beautifully- The cantaloupe melon and tomato crop will be a partial failure at Sum rnerfield all no doubt owing to the drouth In the past land that would yield a car of melons to two acres now only yields a car to every six of eight acres and though the season is only
