    High-visibility organic EL display.

    The R-09 supports a wide-angle view, ener-

    gy-ecient organic EL display that can be

    used outdoors or onstage. The level meters

    respond quickly, and the display has a sepa-

    rate peak indicator. These eatures allow you

    to precisely set your recording level.

    The R-09 uses an SD card as its recording

    Settingthe recording level

    First, set the recording volume. Play a phrase

    that has the highest volume, and then adjust

    the recording level so that the R-09 level meter

    reaches the highest level without the PEAK

    indicator, shown in red below, turning on.

    When the PEAK

    indicator turns on,

    the volume is too high.

    I the level is set too low, delity is lost. I the

    sound level is set too high, pops and snaps may

    be produced.

    Positioningthe R-09

    The let and right microphones on the R-09

    record sound that the let and right ear, respec-

    tively, would hear. So, aim the R-09 to directly at

    what you want to record.

    Also, moving closer to the sound source creates

    a more distinct recording, while moving urther

    away sotens the sound by recording the ambi-

    ent sound o the room.

    We recommend recording instruments in WAV ormat. However, because MP3 recordings are compact,

    they can be useul or recording instrument practice.

    Record Mode Description

    WAV

    Get proessional recording quality or digital audio by recording in 24 bit/48 kHz.

    Recording in 16 bit/44.1 kHz allows you to transer data to the PC and burn a CD

    without any conversion.

    MP3

    The MP3 data ormat was created to preserve the quality o WAV data while

    compressing the le size. Until now, you had to convert WAV le to an MP3 on

    a PC, but the R-09 allows you to record in MP3 ormat directly. Not only can you

    transer data to a PC and distribute it directly on the internet, you can also record

    hours o practice, taking advantage o the smaller le size.

    Setting the mic gainor optimum perormance

    Bands are louder than normal everyday sounds.

    Set the mic gain in the back o the R-09 to LOW.

    Set to HIGH or quieter sounds

    Set to LOW or louder sounds

    The R-09 allows you to set the basic mic gain in

    order to utilize its microphones eatures to their

    ullest. By setting this rst, the gain is optimized,

    the recording level is easier to adjust, and, o

    course, the result is a better recording.

    Optimizingrecording levels

    Beore recording the band, nd where the loud-

    est sound occurs. Adjust the recording level so

    that the R-09 level meter reaches its highest level

    without the PEAK indicator, shown in red below,

    turning on.

    Although this process may take some eort,

    there are great benets to be gained by doing it.

    I the level is set too low, the entire recording will

    be recorded at a low volume; i the sound level

    is set too high, then the sound will be clipped,

    the R-09

    In rehearsal studios, instruments are placed in vari-

    ous locations throughout the room. To record the

    sound rom each instrument equally, place the R-09

    in the middle o the studio at about the height o atable. Placing the R-09 on the foor can garble the

    sound and the recording will not be clear. I the R-09

    is placed too high, the lower requencies will be

    dropped and the recording will sound tinny.

    Choose the sound quality according to the purpose.

    I sound quality is important:

    For example, we recommend recording in WAV

    ormat when you want to archive material or

    when youll use the recording as the master or

    making a CD. WAV ormat maximizes the ea-

    tures o the R-09, so its appropriate or record-

    ings you want to keep.

    On the other hand, we recommend recording

    in MP3 ormat when reviewing practices at re-

    hearsal studios or when making long recordings.

    You can leave the R-09 recording or an entire

    session or later review.

    The optional Cover/Stand Set is not just a simple protective cover.

    The optional cover/stand set (OP-R09C) is not just a

    protective coverit connects to the included stand. The

    cover can also attach to commercially available tripods

    or cameras or video cameras. So i you need the extra

    stability, you can use a tripod in place o the stand.

    In addition, you can use the mic stand adaptor

    (OP-R09M) to attach the R-09 to a mic stand. With a

    single mic stand, you can place the R-09 in the opti-mal position and the optimal height in the studio.

    First, check the volume setting on the playback

    device. I the volume is set too low, then the

    volume o the recording will be too low no matter

    how high the R-09 input level is set. Conversely, i

    the volume is too high, the sound will be distorted

    no matter how you adjust the level on the R-09.

    I the recording level is too low, the

    level meter doesnt move much.

    I the recording is made with these

    settings, then the sound at play-

    back will be unsatisactory.

    Next, nd the loudest point o the song to be

    recorded. Every song has its loudest and quietest

    points. Set the level so that PEAK light doesntquite turn on when the loudest section is played.

    Selectingthe cables to use

    The R-09s audio input uses a stereo mini-plug.

    Select a cable thats compatible with the output

    jack(s) on the playback machine. Most combo

    or radio-cassette units use an RCA plug; most

    compact players use a stereo mini-plug. Veriy

    the type o plug used by the playback device in

    its owners manual.

    The R-09 uses a stereo mini-plug.

    Most compact cassette players and

    MD players also use this plug type.

    Use WAV ormat to preserve important recordings that are aithul to the source.

    I creating CD

    WAV16bit/44.1kHz

    For proessional quality

    WAV 24bit/48kHz

    Because 16 bit/44.1 kHz is the same setting used on audio CDs, its ideal or burning to CD or playback

    on a CD player. This ormat is great or making CDs to pass out to riends, or to keep.

    I the sound source is high quality, it may be preerable to use the best quality 24 bit/48 kHz setting.

    However, be aware that the 24 bit/48 kHz setting takes up a lot o memory (in other words, the record-

    ing time on the SD card is shorter). Also, when making a CD on a PC, youll need sotware capable o

    handling a 24 bit/48 kHz sound recording.

    Checking the playback settings is also important!

    Portable cassette players and MD players oten have built-in eatures such as equalizers or bass

    boosters to intensiy the sound. These eatures are important when listening outdoors so you

    can enjoy the music. However, we recommend turning these eatures o when recording on the

    R-09 or your archives.

    Mini component stereo sets and radio-cassettes also use eatures such as bass boosting or loudness

    to intensiy the sound rom the compact speakers. These eatures should also be turned o.

    I these eatures are let on, then the lower requencies will be louder than the other requencies.

    I recorded in this state, the original sound will not be recorded aithully. Also, its dicult to edit

    or process these recording later on so that they resemble the original sound.

    The best method is to aithully record the original sound, and then use editing sotware on a

    PC to do any additional processing. Doing so allows you to preserve a aithul recording o the

    original sound. Using a copy o the recording, you can then edit or process the sound as much as

    you like.

    Settingrecording levels

    Have the singer sing the loudest section o the

    song. Since the singer may quickly tire o singing

    just or setting a recording level, try to deter-

    mine the level quickly.

    Remember that body temperature rises ater

    singing or a while, and the voice can get louder.

    It may be a good idea to set the level a little

    lower to compensate or this.

    Placingthe R-09

    When using the R-09 internal mic, use the R-09

    as i its a microphone.

    You can place the R-09 as

    you would a microphone

    by using the optional

    cover/stand set (OP-R09C)

    and the mic stand adaptor

    (OP-R09M).

    Unlike other types o recording, when record-

    ing vocals, you should be aware that the singer

    s breaths may be captured by the mic. You can

    prevent this by using a pop guard (see photo on

    let).

    Using the Reverb unction to add ambience

    Oten when recording or CD, a reverb eect is added to vocals and acoustic instruments. Reverb

    is an eect that adds an aesthetic ambience to a song like one might hear in a concert hall.

    The R-09 has a eature to add a reverb eect during playback.

    This eature is convenient or listening to a recording to hear

    how it sounds with reverb applied.

    When using the reverb eature, record about 4 inch (10 cm)

    rom the mic to cut out unnecessary natural ambience. I ambi-

    ence is recorded, it will interere with the reverb and the sound

    will become garbled.

    Settingthe recording quality

    Using or vocal training and checking vocals

    Sounds like vocals have subtleties that are best

    captured by high sound quality. Since long

    recordings are not likely, use 16 bit/44.1 kHz orbetter high-quality WAV ormat.

    Keep in mind that i you use the 16 bit/44.1 kHz

    WAV ormat, you wont need to do any conver-

    sions on your PC when using the recording to

    make a CD.

    Using as a voice memo recorder

    I youre using the R-09 to record ideas or songsor melodies, use the MP3 ormat. The sound

    quality is sucient to jog your memory or melo-

    dies. Because the data is compressed, you have

    the additional bonus o being able to record or

    longer periods o time.

    Precautionswhen singing

    The R-09 internal microphone records in stereo,

    so sound is recorded realistically. However, i

    the vocalists head moves during the recording,

    the sound will move rom side to side duringplayback.

    The playback o such a record-

    tuations that dont sound very

    good.

    The R-09 internal mic is omni-

    directional, so these uctua-tions are less noticeable. Conse-

    quently, this caution does not

    have to be strictly observed,

    but with a little eort, a steady

    recording can easily be made.

    Set the R-09 mic gain to HIGH when recording

    bird songs or other quiet sounds. This setting

    makes the microphone very sensitive so that

    even the smallest sounds are captured. Con-

    versely, set the mic gain to LOW when recording

    nearby loud noises such as trains or proper mic

    sensitivity.

    Positioningthe R-09

    I possible, its best to position the microphone

    while considering the uture listener. For ex-

    ample, i you record a murmuring stream on the

    right and bird songs on the let, when you play

    back the recording your listener will be trans-

    ported to that place.

    Increase realism withstereo recording

    I the wind is strong, you can change the micro-

    phone direction to cut down the wind noise.

    In normal situations, when you want even just

    a little better quality, its best to record in WAV

    ormat. However, i youre recording outside, you

    will probably want to record or an extendedtime. For this situation, MP3 may be best. MP3

    recordings are about 1/10 the size o WAV re-

    cordings (at 128 kpbs).

    Take extras

    Check your batteries and SD card beore leav-

    ing. Nature doesnt provide convenience stores

    where you can buy batteries. Be sure that you

    have these items, because without them, youcant do any recording.

    Also, be aware that batteries are used up aster

    when its colder. Even i you think that your

    batteries have enough charge, take some spares

    just in case.

    Check these beore leaving

    When an external microphone is convenientWhenever you record outside, theres always the

    chance that you may not be able to get to the place

    you want to record rom. With an external microphone,

    you can sometimes reach those hard-to-get-to spots.

    Use the optional stereo microphone (CS-15), sold

    separately. This microphone can capture sound rom a

    specic location, allowing you to target the sound you

    want. So you can target the sound you want. And since

    the R-09 operates independently o the microphoneposition, you can move more reely in the outdoors.

    Using LOW CUT to block wind noise

    I a strong wind blows into the microphone, other

    sounds will be aected by the sound o the wind. Some-

    times the wind is louder than the sound youre trying to

    record, making it impossible to get the recording you

    want. I this happens, try turning on LOW CUT located

    on the back o the R-09. Because the wind sounds

    produce low requencies, you can reduce the noise by

    cutting out the lower requencies during recording.

    Setting the recordinglevel or meetings

    First, set the mic gain to HIGH. For normal

    everyday volumes, such as meetings, setting the

    microphone sensitivity to HIGH is best. You can

    do level checks by putting the R-09 into record-

    ing standby during the pre-meeting chatter.

    You can also turn AGC (Auto Gain Control) on.

    AGC turns the recording level up when the

    speaker speaks quietly and turns the level downwhen the speaker is loud. This setting maintains

    a good volume balance when reviewing the

    recording.

    Positioningthe R-09

    The R-09 microphone is an omni-directional

    microphone, so placement is not a serious issue

    when recording a meeting. To record all partici-

    pants clearly, youll probably want to place the

    R-09 in the middle o the table.

    When placing the R-09 on a table, use the

    optional cover/stand set (OP-R09C) to eliminate

    noise rom the table. Even a short burst o noisecan block out the conversation in the meeting.

    Since the purpose o recording a meeting is to

    be able to hear what is being said, there is no

    strict requirement or good sound quality. More

    importantly, the recording will oten be or anextended time, so MP3 is probably the best

    ormat.

    MP3 is recommendedor extended recordings

    I you need to record or a longer time, set the

    bit rate to 64 kpbs. Although this level o com-

    pression will degrade the quality, its sucient

    or recording conversations during meetings.

    Using an externalmicrophone or lectures

    When recording lectures or other presentations

    where theres only one speaker, use an external

    microphone (CS-15), sold separately, or better

    perormance.

    The microphone captures sound rom a specic

    source, so you can reduce the sounds rom the

    audience.

    The external microphone can also be setup as shown

    Using Auto Gain Control (AGC)

    The AGC automatically changes the recording level according to the volume o the sound being

    recorded. You may think that this convenient eature should be let on all the time.

    However, there are times when using AGC is not ap-

    propriate. This is especially the case when youre trying

    to capture the true nature o a sound. For example, i

    you record a piano recital with AGC on, you would lose

    all the inection and dynamism o the piano because

    the sound would be recorded at the same volume

    throughout. Also, the recording level is constantly

    being increased and decreased, giving the recording a

    less natural sound.

    For meetings and lectures, its best to keep the volume

    even so that you can capture whats being said. This is

    when the AGC eature can be best put to use.

    The acoustic guitar provides rich mid and low requencysounds. However, i these sounds are too loud, themusic may sound mufed. In this case, dont change theposition o the microphone (which should be aroundthe 15th or 17th ret), but change its angle so that themicrophone is at an angle rom the neck o the guitar.This should make the sound clearer.

    When you want to record the sharp sound o strum-ming the guitar, place the microphone away rom the

    body near the point where neck is attached, in order torecord the string vibration while reducing the level othe low and mid requencies.

    Ideally, recording occurs in a studio or other enclosedspace that excludes outside noises. I youre recordingin a room, choose a room where there is little environ-mental noise (street noise or city noise) and that doesntecho much.

    The microphone should be placed directly in ront othe singer. However, you can place the microphone alittle below the mouth to reduce the sound o breathing.By doing this, a more rounded sound, with more lowerrequencies, can be recorded, depending on the voicequality or the settings. To prevent this eect, set LOWCUTto ON. Doing so will make the sound more crisp.

    When playing the guitar or bass in a studio, the volume andsettings are the same as or perormances, in general. I youwant to give the eeling o recording in a room, place themicrophone 10 eet (3 m) or more away. Be aware however,that i you place the microphone too ar away, the soundmay become less clear because theres too much roomambience. On the other hand, to create the impression othe instrument playing directly in ront o the listener, placethe microphone about 3 eet (1 m) away or less.

    I youre recording in a room, its best to directly connectan eect processor with an amp modeling eature, or anamp to the R-09 via cables. Devices with internal ampmodeling can provide realistic sounds when connectedvia cables.

    Connect digital instruments such as synthesizers,organs, samplers, or rhythm machines directly to theR-09 LINE IN jack. In particular, digital synthesizers mayhave eects or mastering eatures that allow the aithulrecording o their sounds through cable connections.

    For instruments using an amp, use the same distancerules as or an electric guitar using an amp, as shownabove.

    Unlike small instruments, a piano produces sound romits entirety. Since the internal microphone is an omni-directional microphone, its especially good at recordinga pianos stereo sound.

    Position the microphone to maintain a balance betweenthe strings and the soundboard. Adjust the balancebetween the attack and sustain using distance. Try di-erent congurations to obtain the cleanest recording.

    Piano

    I the microphone is pointed toward the bass drum, thesnare drum is o-center and its sound becomes weak.Thereore, direct the microphone so that the bass drumand snare drum are in a direct line, and they will then beheard in the center during playback as a clear rhythm.This placement also helps reduce air pus into the mi-crophone rom the bass drum because the microphoneis not directly in the ront o the bass drum.

    Another idea to consider when the attack is strong butquiet is to move the microphone 10 eet (3 m) or moreaway, or to place the microphone in the back o the drumset. Doing so produces a more rounded sound, and a clear

    recording is achieved, making level adjustment easier.

    Drums

    When recording a horn section with room sounds, setthe microphone at least 10 eet (3 m) away. Dont pointthe microphone directly at the bell, but point it slightlyupwards toward the bell to soten the direct sound o thehorn and to capture the reected sound. Also, to create astereo eect, leave the microphone where its and have theplayers move apart.

    On the other hand, when recording a solo perormance upclose, woodwinds, like the saxophone, dont produce soundsolely rom the bell but also rom the keys. Also, when all thekeys are pressed, the sound rom the bell changes suddenly.For these cases, place the microphone slightly down andslightly to the right or let or a smooth recording.

    Wind instruments

    Stringed instruments, such as the violin or contrabass,are similar to the acoustic guitar. The secret is to havea balance between the string vibrations and the soundrom the body. The R-09 internal stereo condensermicrophone should be placed about 6 eet (2 m) away,

    acing the instrument to capture the room sounds.Bringing the microphone in to about 3 eet (1 m) pro-duces a clear, contoured sound. Taking the microphoneout to 12 eet (3 4 m) produces a ull sound. Adjust themicrophone height and sound quality (low to increasethe low requencies and high to have a clearer sound)while monitoring the sound.

    There are cases when you will want to edit your recording, such as, or example deleting the rst veseconds because theyre unnecessary.

    For Windows PCs, you can use the Cakewalk SONAR Home Studio series (sold separately) or or MacOS,

    you can use GarageBand (included with the MacOS on newer models), or similar sotware to edit the

    R-09 recordings.

    Either sotware allows you to easily delete unwanted sections in the recording. (See the respective

    When you play back your R-09 recorded perormance, wouldnt it be interesting to add sound eects inthe background to enhance the recording?

    For example, you can play relaxing piano music with a background o a murmuring creek or chirping

    birds. This method is oten used to create relaxation CDs.

    For Windows PCs, you can use the Cakewalk SONAR Home Studio series (sold separately) or or MacOS,

    you can use GarageBand (included with the MacOS on newer models), or similar sotware to layer two or

    more sounds, as shown in the image below. (See the respective owners manual or help or the sotware

    or details.)

    Cautions when renaming lesWhen backing up WAV or MP3 les on the PC that were recorded on the R-09, you can make manag-

    ing les easier by giving them easy-to-understand les names. Name your les something thats easily

    recognizable, e.g., use the instrument name or place name where the recording was made.

    However, there are some restrictions or naming les on the PC. I you name your le with one o the

    names shown below, the le will not display properly when its played back on the R-09. I youre going

    to play the le on the R-09, do not use the ollowing le names.
