QUOTATION MARKS

What Are They?

• Quotation marks are used to let the reader know when someone is speaking in a book

• They let you know what they said and who said it

Examples

“I don’t want to clean my

room,” said Emily.

“You have to clean it or you won’t be able to go out and

play,” scolded her mom.

“Ok, I’ll go do it right now,” sighed Emily.

Rules For Using Quotation Marks

• They only go around what the person is saying

• You have to put them at the beginning and at the end of what was said

• You need to note afterwards who said it

• Use a comma, period, question mark, or exclamation mark before the last quotation mark
