Introduction

Quisk, Inc. was founded to create a new payment type—digital cash—and to bring cash into the mobile age. Our solutions enable anyone with a mobile phone number to use their money from their bank without needing physical cash or cards. To enable this ability, Quisk has developed a patented digital services platform (DSP) for integrated mobile payments with digital marketing and loyalty programs. The Quisk DSP enables the next generation of mobile money, which is bank-led, interoperable and more useful for consumers.

The Quisk DSP was designed to be cloud-based, highly efficient, scalable, reliable, secure, modular and flexible. Developed using state-of-the-art Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) design, the Quisk DSP is entirely agnostic to type of mobile phone, mobile service, and other user interfaces. Quisk partners with financial institutions in order to build an ecosystem where Quisk digitized cash can be used by any consumer.

This white paper describes the innovative Quisk DSP with the objective of helping readers better understand why it was created, how it is architected, what solutions it enables, and where it is going in the future.

Why the Quisk DSP was built

In contrast to many mobile wallets or first-generation mobile money offerings available in the market, the Quisk solution enables anyone with a mobile phone number to access and use their money that is on deposit in a financial institution—that is, their cash—without needing physical currency or a debit card or a smartphone.

Quisk uses cash, not credit, as the consumer funding source, enabling consumers to pay with cash that we have digitized—digital cash. Cash is the lowest-cost funding source since there is no interest charge associated with it. This means Quisk has a fundamental competitive advantage vs. smart phone-based mobile wallets which use the more expensive credit card payment networks or Mobile Network Operator (MNO)-led mobile money initiatives which use more expensive mobile minutes.

Quisk connects our Digital Services Platform (“DSP”), a next-generation highly efficient electronic debit / push payment platform, to a bank’s core banking software platform so that the consumer’s mobile phone number and PIN can be associated with the Quisk account held by the bank for that individual, and so that account can be debited or credited in real time—to complete payment transactions, by using one’s mobile phone number and PIN.

The Quisk DSP is the foundation for a new central bank-regulated digital cash—or mobile money—ecosystem consisting of issuing banks, acquirers, merchants, settlement bank and consumers. This Quisk ecosystem is uniquely bank-led, interoperable, and more useful (i.e., many more transaction types) than legacy mobile money solutions.

Our Quisk DSP not only processes digital cash transactions, but also provides digital marketing and loyalty programs which are integrated with the payment process. This element provides the opportunity to create significant value for both merchants and consumers. Please see www.quisk.co for more information on the numerous benefits for Quisk ecosystem participants.

The Quisk digital cash solution not only works with any mobile phone number from any wireless carrier on any type of mobile phone, but also leverages the existing Point-Of-Sale (POS) infrastructure in those markets where such infrastructure exists, and may be used to conduct online eCommerce purchases. In addition, our Person-To-Merchant (P2M) capability enables the merchant’s smart phone or tablet to act as the POS terminal, thereby, completely removing the need for a POS terminal.

Quisk is a FinTech service provider who enables the creation of this new digital cash, or mobile money, ecosystem which benefits all participants. This Quisk ecosystem and participants can be represented as follows:

Quisk DSP ecosystem diagram

Our Quisk DSP enables the next generation of mobile money. Our system was designed with all of the extreme scalability, high availability, and security elements required by such a next-generation payments platform.

More broadly, Quisk aspires to do for cash what Visa, MasterCard and others have done for credit. In order to achieve this ambitious objective, over $20M has already been invested in the research and development of the Quisk DSP, and the company has plans to aggressively increase its platform capabilities moving forward.

Application architecture and design

Quisk has built a world class, state-of-the-art Digital Services Platform, developing our software using the principles of a Service-Oriented Architecture (“SOA”). Using SOA principles for Quisk’s software design means that individual features or applications, or “services” are built as modular components that communicate with each other. Other architectural benefits include:

• Clean separation of architecture logic and business features

• Ability to deliver complex business features easily and quickly

• Reduced time to market with parallel development across verticals

• Reduced risk of defects due to fewer dependencies

• Increased ease of maintenance, monitoring, and scaling

One of the key advantages of this architectural principle is that our platform in all respects is technology agnostic, meaning that we can support and very easily add additional user interfaces both on merchant facing side (manual phone number & PIN entry, NFC, QR Codes, etc.), and on consumer facing side (SMS, Android and iOS Mobile apps, Branded Online Portal, etc.) as the market requires.

Quisk DSP architecture block diagram

The Quisk DSP is designed to handle a variety of payment types: not only cash, but also loyalty and reward points. Our platform handles a variety of funding types: cash in at retail store, cash in at ATM, funds transfer from linked bank account, and so forth.

Another design attribute of our platform is that the failure of any one service or application cannot bring down or “crash” the whole platform. This aspect is extremely important in the transaction processing world, where the platform must be designed to be not only highly scalable—meaning it can ramp up with ever increasing transaction volumes—but must also be highly reliable.

Quisk has an efficient and agile software code development cycle, whereby our software and QA engineers develop code in two week “sprints.” At the end of the two week sprint, after rigorous testing, the code is pushed into production on our DSP. This agile development process enables Quisk to rapidly develop and release new features and refinements to existing features, as well as implement bug fixes. We maintain a backlog of projects, with individual items moving up or down in the queue as near term market priorities shift.

Quisk integrates its DSP with various participants using the following technologies:

• Transaction Processing Integration (Acquirer)

o ISO 8583 API

o Secure REST Web Services API

• Core Banking System Integration (Issuing Bank)

Quisk’s cloud infrastructure

A cloud-based platform design is the only viable technical approach for handling the extreme levels of scalability to process consumer transactions from around the world in a timely manner.

Quisk operates two geographically separate data centers, both located in Equinix hosting facilities. Equinix is a large, international operator of colocation data center facilities with locations around the world. Quisk’s servers and ancillary equipment are secured in its own equipment cages. These facilities have redundant internet connections, power, air conditioning, and Halon fire suppression equipment, as well as high levels of security—including armed guards—on premises 24 x 7, to control physical access.

Our primary data center is located in Sunnyvale, CA, near our headquarters, and our backup Disaster Recovery (“DR”) center is in Equinix’s Denver, CO, facility. The DR facility has full transaction processing capability. Our Network Operating Center (“NOC”) is located at our headquarters in Sunnyvale, CA, and monitors operations from that location. See the below diagram for a visual representation of our cloud infrastructure:

We have clustered servers in each location with load balancers and multiple network elements, for high availability and scalability. We use Oracle for primary and standby databases at each location, with real time replication of data using Oracle Golden Gate software. This means that as transactions are processed and hit our primary database at our primary facility in Sunnyvale, the transaction is immediately replicated on our standby database at that location, as well as being replicated and backed up at our DR data center in Denver.

The below diagram shows the Quisk Disaster Recovery infrastructure:

Security

Quisk believes we have designed one of the most secure payment solutions available today. We are certified to be compliant with one of most secure standards, Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) 3.0. In addition to implementing all the security measures prescribed by the PCI DSS standards, including regular penetration testing, Quisk has instituted security best practices and processes, and innovated to create some unique security capabilities.

Network-level security

The Quisk platform has been built from the ground up using state-of-the-art security principles. Data must be secure both when it is traveling from one place to another in the system—in flight, as well as once it has reached a destination—at rest. In-flight security is accomplished by using encryption, and by having a streamlined network with fewer hops. At-rest security is accomplished through tokenization and one-way hashing.

A listing of some of Quisk’s security technologies and capabilities is below:

• Security of sensitive data at-rest:

o PIN stored as salted one-way hash

o Can never be used to reconstruct original PIN

o Bank information stored as tokens

• Security of sensitive data in-flight:

Page 8: Quisk’s patented Digital Services Platform: Enabling the ... · Quisk’s patented Digital Services Platform: Enabling the next generation of mobile money . Quisk white paper

o ISO API – PIN encrypted using acquirer keys

o SMS – PIN never used

o REST API – https and digital signatures

o Consumer Portal and Admin Portal – https used

Quisk uses the strongest data protection techniques available: tokenization of bank account data and one-way hashing of Quisk account PINs. This means neither Quisk, nor its participants, needs to invest in encryption and key management for handling credit/debit card numbers and other personal information. Additionally, sensitive data makes fewer “hops” within the Quisk environment, thereby spending less time in flight. This is another example of how the Quisk solution is more secure than legacy card-based payment environments.

Consumer-level security

When a consumer creates their PIN, they do so using a secure PIN pad. The PIN is encrypted immediately and transmitted over a secure data link to our Quisk DSP, where it is stored after being processed using a one-way hash algorithm. Neither Quisk, nor anyone else, can see the PIN—only the consumer who created it knows what it is.

Any bank account information stored on the Quisk platform has undergone tokenization, meaning that Quisk cannot see any internal banking data. Controls are placed on the Quisk account as to the maximum balance, number of transactions allowed per 24 hours, and transaction amount.

The consumer has significant control over the level of security of their account. Quisk provides the consumer with AUTO-LOCK, LOCK, and FREEZE features. If someone makes three consecutive incorrect PIN attempts, the account is automatically locked. Quisk also holds U.S. patents on these consumer-level security capabilities.

The below table summarizes consumer-level security elements of Quisk relative to alternatives:

Quisk Payment Services

The Quisk solution uses cash, not credit, as a funding source, enabling consumers to pay with cash that we have digitized—digital cash. Cash is the lowest-cost funding source; however, other solution approaches prefer to leverage the existing, but more expensive credit payment networks or Mobile Network Operator (MNO)-specific mobile minutes.

We connect our DSP to the financial institution’s core banking platform, and associate a mobile phone number to the customer’s Quisk account held there. Our DSP not only processes mobile phone number-initiated

transactions, but also provides digital marketing and loyalty programs which are integrated with the payment process. This element provides the opportunity to create significant value for merchants and consumers.

Unlike typical mobile money solutions available today, the Quisk DSP enables a much broader variety of possible payment transaction types for consumers. See the below diagram for a comparison:

Sales transactions

A consumer may use his Quisk Account to purchase goods and services at merchants that display the Quisk Acceptance Mark. The Quisk solution can work with existing Point-Of-Sale terminal networks or could be used for a Person-to-Merchant (P2M) transaction using the merchant’s smart phone or tablet as a mobile POS device.

A consumer can purchase services or goods by simply entering his mobile phone number and PIN into the POS terminal, or merchant mobile device. Quisk checks the transaction request against the consumer’s Quisk account balance and bank-specified limits. Upon approval, the Quisk DSP sends a payment confirmation to the consumer via SMS, email and/or in-app notification—if the consumer has the Quisk app on their smart phone. In addition to a Sales Transaction, a merchant can also process Void and Refund transactions.

Cash Out service (withdrawals)

The Cash Out service enables a consumer to obtain cash from his Quisk account at any of his bank branches, Quisk-enabled ATMs, or at all Quisk merchant locations. Quisk conducts a real-time check against the consumer’s Quisk account balance and bank-specified limits. Upon Quisk’s approval of a Cash Out transaction, the transaction amount, in local currency, is immediately debited from the consumer’s Quisk account. Lastly, Quisk sends a transaction confirmation message via SMS, email or in-app notification.

Add Money service (deposits)

The Add Money service enables a consumer to fund their Quisk account by providing cash to an authorized merchant or to a participating bank branch location. Upon Quisk’s approval of an Add Money transaction, the transaction amount, in local currency, is immediately credited to the consumer’s Quisk account. Lastly, Quisk sends a transaction confirmation message via SMS, email or in-app notification.

Top-up from linked bank account

Consumers may easily transfer money from their direct deposit bank accounts which are linked to their Quisk account. In addition, the consumer can set up an automatic transfer of funds from their linked account when the funds in their Quisk account drop below a configurable threshold. Lastly, Quisk sends a transaction confirmation message via SMS, email or in-app notification.

eCommerce

Consumers have a convenient and secure way to conduct eCommerce, or make online purchases, using their Quisk account. The consumer would see Quisk as an acceptable form of payment in the online checkout portion of the particular web site. After selecting Quisk, the consumer would enter their mobile phone number and PIN into a secure virtual terminal window which connects directly to the Quisk DSP. Lastly, Quisk sends a transaction confirmation message via SMS, email or in-app notification.

Bill Pay

Consumers have a convenient and secure way to pay bills anytime, anywhere using their Quisk Account. Using the bank-branded consumer portal, the consumer can register appropriate merchants and/or other entities to be able to pay bills easily and securely using their Quisk account. Consumers can pay their bills by using SMS commands with their feature phone or using the Quisk app on their smart phone. The Quisk DSP ensures the consumer has enough funds and will transfer the funds to pay the consumer’s bill at the end of the day. Lastly, Quisk sends a transaction confirmation message via SMS, email or in-app notification.

Person-To-Person (P2P)

Consumers have a convenient and secure way to send people money using their Quisk Account. A consumer simply texts the recipient’s mobile phone number and amount to Quisk. A secure IVR call is then placed to capture the consumer’s PIN; this step securely verifies the consumer. Quisk then sends the consumer a SMS with a Get Money Code. The consumer then communicates the Get Money Code directly to the P2P recipient; this step verifies the recipient. The recipient simply replies to the SMS notification with the Get Money Code. If the Recipient is not an existing Account Holder, Quisk sends an invitation. Lastly, Quisk sends a transaction confirmation message via SMS, email or in-app notification to the consumer and recipient.

Government disbursements

Governments (“Originator”) can disburse welfare payments or other disbursements through the Quisk DSP. The Originator uploads a file into an on-line portal with the details of the disbursement, including recipient names, mobile numbers and disbursement amount. Recipients with Quisk accounts immediately receive the disbursement. Invitations to join the Quisk networks are sent to recipients without Quisk accounts. Similar to other transactions, the consumer recipient will receive a confirmation via SMS, email or in-app notification. A future Quisk DSP feature here will be the ability to limit the merchants where these disbursements can be spent.

Person-To-Merchant (P2M)

Consumers can conveniently and securely pay merchants who do not have POS terminals by confirming the purchase amount on the merchant’s smart phone, then entering their mobile phone number and PIN to complete the transaction. Lastly, Quisk sends a transaction confirmation message via SMS, email or in-app notification.

Page 11: Quisk’s patented Digital Services Platform: Enabling the ... · Quisk’s patented Digital Services Platform: Enabling the next generation of mobile money . Quisk white paper

Loyalty

Consumers can make purchases using the loyalty points that they’ve already earned at participating merchants. They just need to notify the merchant that they would like to “pay with points” and then enter their mobile phone number and PIN to complete the transaction. No cash will be transferred from their Quisk account, but the transaction will be completed. Lastly, Quisk sends a transaction confirmation message via SMS, email or in-app notification.

Consumer access channels

The Quisk DSP is architected to be agnostic regarding consumer access channels. Quisk supports any type of mobile phone (i.e., smart phone or feature phone) using any type of mobile service via SMS; Quisk also has mobile apps for iOS and Android based smartphones and a bank branded web portal.

Consumers also can access the Quisk system through participating bank ATMs or POS terminals within participating merchant environments. Quisk payment services are the same independent of which channel the consumer uses to access the system.

A summary of key elements for Quisk consumer access channels is provided below:

• Same payment services accessible by different technologies—whatever is preferred by consumers

• Merchant checkout—just phone # and PIN

• Card-less, cash-less and phone-less

• On VeriFone terminals OR on merchant’s smart phone (mPOS)

• SMS—available on any type of phone

• Online Consumer Portal—branded for the issuing bank

• Mobile apps—Apple iOS and Google Android

In addition, all of our SMS, online portal and mobile app functionality is exposed as an API. This means banks can integrate and provide these features natively in their own SMS channels, online portals and their own mobile apps.

Merchant POS terminal and mPOS options

The Quisk DSP is architected to be agnostic to the type of POS terminal used within merchant environments. Quisk can integrate its DSP to be compatible with existing POS terminals. In addition, the Quisk DSP can accommodate any type of POS terminal in terms of interface technology; this means Quisk can be used with NFC, QR code, BLE-enabled POS terminals.

Quisk provides reference implementations of several VeriFone POS models. In addition, Quisk supports any VeriFone terminal type that an acquirer wants under a “professional services” agreement.

Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions regarding the type of POS terminals and modes that Quisk supports as well as our near-term future plans in this area.

If a particular partner desires to bypass traditional POS terminals, Quisk has developed a mobile POS (mPOS) solution which a merchant can work with his/her acquirer and download from the appropriate app store. This app enables the merchant to receive payments from his/her customers by having them enter their mobile phone number and PIN directly into his/her smart phone app. The Quisk DSP will then process these payments and the merchant will receive his money.

Quisk back-office services

Quisk provides numerous back-office services in order to make our DSP more valuable to our bank and merchant participants. Quisk offers a web-based administration console, reporting capabilities which enable actionable intelligence, bulk upload/registration capabilities for consumers, tools for the creation and management of digital marketing and loyalty programs, and multi-bank settlement. In addition, the Quisk DSP is designed in a modular manner to enable timely compliance with all relevant central bank regulations regarding digital cash or mobile money within a particular jurisdiction.

Administration portals

Quisk provides multiple web-based portals as tools for entering and managing information about Quisk users in Quisk’s database and for running Quisk reports. The Quisk administration portals can be branded according to the wishes of our financial institution participants; they come in the following formats:

Issuer portal—Quisk offers a white-labeled portal to enable our issuing banks to provide Quisk account information to their consumer customers.

Acquirer portal—Quisk offers a portal to enable acquirers to see status of the merchants which they have signed up to participate on the Quisk network.

Settlement bank portal—Quisk offers a portal to enable the settlement to monitor all transactions on the Quisk network and related key information.

Merchant portal—Quisk offers a portal for participating merchants containing detailed information for all Quisk payment transactions and relevant loyalty programs.

The Quisk administration console drives the system administration function for financial institutions, acquirers, merchants, and settlement bank. It contains a hierarchy which defines the boundaries between entities and the products and services each entity can access. This means that, for example, Administrator A from Participant A cannot see reports, customers, or data belonging to Participant B.

In addition, roles can be assigned in the Quisk administration portal such that a specific administrator could only see specific products, like accessing reports or updating customer information. Again, an administrator for a given merchant can only access data related to that merchant.

Reporting

Quisk participants (i.e., banks, acquirers, and/or merchants) can run a variety of transaction reports, both summary and detailed, for daily, weekly, monthly, or other custom time periods. These reports include:

• Participant-specific transaction activity (including suspense account activity)

• Account-Holder-specific transaction activity

• Merchant-specific transaction activity,

• Store-specific transaction activity, and

• POS-specific transaction activity Quisk reporting also includes business metrics, such as user signups and conversions, and merchant and store performance. Quisk also provides a settlement report which lists the transactions between financial institutions for efficient inter-bank settlement and reconciliation. While sample reports do not include fees, Quisk calculates and displays fees in appropriate reports based on executed business agreements.

Page 13: Quisk’s patented Digital Services Platform: Enabling the ... · Quisk’s patented Digital Services Platform: Enabling the next generation of mobile money . Quisk white paper

Bulk upload and self-registration capabilities

A bank participant may choose to export files of existing customer information to be uploaded and validated by Quisk. Quisk calls this process a “Bulk Upload.” Account Holders may be added individually or bulk uploaded via the Admin Portal. This capability enables banks to much more efficiently on-board their customers into the Quisk system. The Bulk Upload feature speeds your bank’s realization of ROI and improves your human resource productivity.

In addition to bulk upload, consumers, or account holders, can also self-register for the Quisk service by going to the consumer portal or the smart app and providing the appropriate registration information and then proceed with the country-specific KYC process.

Marketing and loyalty program administration

A Merchant participant may set up a loyalty program to offer rewards to his loyal customers. A Merchant can track both accumulated and redeemed rewards by store or by other parameters. Merchants are able to specify the parameters for their loyalty programs and enable their customers to pay with the points that they’ve earned. Through integration with payment data, this functionality empowers your organization to create more effective campaigns which can be sent to your customers mobile phone (assuming they opt-in) to drive more store traffic and increase their brand loyalty.

Risk management

To ensure the integrity of the Quisk Digital Services, Quisk monitors, manages, and mitigates risks associated with its operation. The underlying technology and design of the Quisk Digital Services Platform (DSP) is key to managing all types of risk at Quisk. The DSP supports account management, transaction, and payment processing functions. It has been designed with multiple layers of checks and balances to insure that risks are mitigated, controlled, and monitored on a real-time, ongoing basis.

The Quisk DSP also enables customizable risk parameters to be configured by your systems administrators. For example, these can be set based on spending/send money limits, daily or aggregate transaction limits, etc. Your organization can also manage merchant risk, manage daily transaction volumes, and perform other risk management-related tasks.

Systems administrators can create customized alerting within the Quisk DSP to improve the visibility of whether a certain risk threshold has been exceeded, so that the business can take appropriate and timely remediation actions.

Multi-bank settlement

Settlement refers to the sorting, aggregation and reporting of transactions comp completed within a Settlement Day. The process also includes calculation of related fees and determination of Net Funding Amounts to be transferred between Participants.

The Quisk DSP has been designed to have one participant bank act as the settlement bank for within that country. This settlement bank is the entity that facilitates the exchange of money between issuing banks and acquiring banks. Settlement within the Quisk system takes place daily; the exact timing can be specified depending upon the location of the specific country where it is employed.

Settlement is a process that begins with secure data collection and transaction validation. Transactions are authorized and cleared on a real-time basis. Quisk compiles and reports all Transaction activity on a daily basis. Quisk provides both summary and detailed Settlement Reports that enable Participants to track, duplicate, and record all Transaction activity, including the assessment of fees and taxes.

Page 14: Quisk’s patented Digital Services Platform: Enabling the ... · Quisk’s patented Digital Services Platform: Enabling the next generation of mobile money . Quisk white paper

These reports also assist with reconciliation. The Funding Bank transfers funds between Participant Funding Accounts each Funding Day in accordance with the Funding Instructions. Participants transfer funds to Account Holder, Merchant and operational accounts at their discretion.

Settlement happens daily within the Quisk system. At the conclusion of each settlement day, the following processes ensue:

• Settlement cut-off and reporting window (GMT(0) – GMT+2) • Settlement cut-off time occurs at GMT 0, 7 days a week • After the Settlement cut-off time, Quisk generates transaction Settlement Reports, compiling data for all

Transactions completed during the Settlement Day • Quisk reviews Settlement Reports for completeness and accuracy • Quisk makes available Settlement and Funding Reports to all appropriate parties by GMT+2

Regulatory compliance

The Quisk DSP is designed to easily comply with all relevant central bank regulations regarding digital payments and/or mobile money. As a company, Quisk is committed to complying with all laws and regulations, including all local, state, federal or international rules that govern its business. Quisk also requires that each participant on its network—that is, account holders, issuing banks, acquirers, merchants, agent merchants, and others—comply with all applicable laws in the countries where Quisk operates.

Quisk also is concerned with consumer protection and data privacy and complies with all applicable laws where our solutions are offered. Quisk’s privacy policy is posted on the footer section of our web site, as well as on each issuing bank administrator portal, merchant portal and consumer portal. Lastly, Quisk does not sell or otherwise distribute any personal information that it collects through the usage of its system.

Quisk API

The Quisk DSP includes a complete API suite that developers may access to write applications and facilitate Web Services and ISO messaging-based connections with our platform. Please contact Quisk at [email protected] for more information.

Conclusion

The Quisk DSP is a patented state-of-the-art cloud-based platform which can process a wide variety digital cash or mobile money transactions. It has been architected for extreme security, scalability, reliability and high availability and has achieved PCI DSS 3.0 compliance.

This platform enables Quisk to be the next-generation of mobile money—a solution which is bank-led, interoperable, and much more useful for consumers. This is an ambitious goal, but one Quisk—along with our ecosystem partners—believes is within our reach. The Quisk DSP enables significant new benefits to banks, acquirers, merchants, governments and, most importantly, consumers.

Quisk is effectively working on version 3.0 of our platform, to which we are adding substantially more capabilities to our mobile apps, for example in-app messaging to supplement SMS, NFC enabled payments via smart app, cross-border remittances, etc., in preparation for the overall market migrating even further to smartphones with data services.
