I am William Wallace

This past week I completed a 17 month journey with my cohort in Spiritual FormationAcademy. I’ve been asked by several people, “so is your soul formed?” The answeris: I am in process. I am thankful to the QFMC Board for their support of me to bepart of the Academy. I am also indebted to my bride Diane for her love and support inthis journey. Without her encouragement I would not have taken this step.

In the final day of our 4th and final retreat, we were invited to share a TED Talk. Iaccepted that invitation. What follows is a portion of my talk.

In the movie Braveheart, William Wallace inspired his fellow Scotsman before apivotal battle against the British. He said,

“I AM William Wallace. And I see a whole army of my countrymen here indefiance of tyranny. You have come to fight as free men,

and free men you are. What would you do without freedom?

Will you fight?”

I am William Wallace and I am here to talk to you about: FREEDOM!

I did not realize that when I began the Academy journey with you all that I was in afight against tyranny … tyranny of the Enemy to keep me from being who my Lordcreated me to be.

17 months ago my tank was empty. I wondered why I’d accepted the invitation toapply to the Academy. When I got here I was wondering “where I can I hide and howcan I maintain this mask?”

This place … the Soul Formation Academy … YOU … have been a place of safety,affirmation, learning, and practice.

I am beginning to understand more deeply that God is resolute in His love for me.I’ve tried to change His mind, but I am discovering anew, my God is Resolute!

God wired me for a purpose. I am not a mistake. God trusts me and has invited meinto His co-op. I am learning that He designed me for relationship. I am not simply abeing to be acted upon, but a beloved son that God wants to be in relationship with. Iam in awe that my God would trust me with even a small portion of the care of thisprecious, delicate life He created within me.

God has not left me to suffer in the dysfunctional dungeon of self-loathing andworthlessness. I am being loved and equipped to be who I was created to be: ahelper, an encourager, a coach and exhorter!

Through my journey with the Academy I am learning that: Intimacy with God andothers is possible; even for “someone like me.” My fear of being known can only beovercome by …. (wait for it)…. “being known.” The path to intimacy is found when Irisk vulnerability; which is to say, TRUST.

I’ve been out of balance and too often have put people before God. Althoughfledgling in my practice, I am drawn to: solitude with God. My balance will be found inthat direction.
