Opposites: Every positive number is paired with a negative
opposite, which is the same distance from zero but in the opposite direction
Example: +4 opposite is -4Can you think of another example?
Integers:Whole numbers (positives) and their opposites (negatives) and zero!
Rational Numbers:Positive and negative integers and positive and negative fractions
Example: +1/2 and -1/2Can you think of another example?
Extending the Number System - Continued
InequalitiesWhen do we use?
To show when two values (numbers or variables) are not equal
What do they look like and what do they mean?> greater than< less than
(Please note…there are more than two inequalities!)Example:
- 8 < -6 We read this as “negative eight is less than negative six.”Can you come up with a “greater than” example?
In the book, as a group
Task: • 1.) Read pg. 8 as a group.• 2.) Answer Problem 1.1 A-C in your journals.• 3.) Check your answer to C with another group• 4.) Record your groups answer to C on the
class data chart
• While you wait for the rest of the class, you may start your homework: Toeing the Line WS
