Public Notice U.S. EPA Announces a Proposed Plan for Cleanup of the Savage
Municipal Water Supply Superfund Site – In Milford New Hampshire
Boston—U.S. EPA Region 1 announces the availability of the Proposed Plan for cleanup of the Savage Municipal Water Supply Superfund Site in Milford, New Hampshire. This Proposed Plan presents EPA’s change to the current cleanup remedy for Opera-ble Unit 1 (OU1) at the Savage Municipal Water Supply Superfund Site.
In 1991, EPA issued a Record of Decision (ROD) initiating re-medial action for the cleanup of contamination in groundwater at the Site. In 1996, an Explanation of Significant Differences (ESD) was issued which augmented the cleanup approach in OU1. While the cleanup remedies have greatly reduced the amount of con-taminated groundwater since their implementation, contamination still remains within the overburden and bedrock aquifers at the Site. Therefore, EPA is proposing to amend the 1991 ROD and the groundwater remedy currently being implemented at OU1 to include several new components.
EPA’s Proposed Plan generally includes the following compo-nents: ? Reducing contaminant concentrations in groundwater through chemical treatment; ? Establishing a Technical Impracticability Zone (TI Zone) within which drinking water standards will not be achieved (but restric-tions will prevent any exposure to the groundwater); the TI Zone is the area of highest groundwater contamination where it is not technically practical to achieve those standards; and ? Monitoring and assessing the natural attenuation of contami-nants in groundwater outside of the TI Zone, where drinking water standards will eventually be achieved.
EPA will be holding a Public Information Meeting on Monday, Au-gust 3, 2015 at 6:30 pm at the Milford Town Hall – Selectmen’s Meeting Room located at One Union Square, Milford New Hamp-shire.How to Comment on the Proposed Plan:EPA will also hold a 30-day public comment period from Monday, August 4, 2014 to Wednesday, September 3, 2014.
