Q. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of existing

media products?

Watched a lot of trailers on YouTube and noticed similarities in them such as their length was 1:30 to 3

minutes maximum and featured dialogues rarely just visuals and music and had scenes which made the

viewer curious and eager to watch

I’m huge fan of movies that continuously break conventions that’s why i love these directors.

The character Romeo is a blend of a romantic hero and a villain himself in the first scene he stares in the

camera hence breaking the 4th wall. The trailer has very little dialogues hence breaking a convention of

normal trailer which normally have full actual conversation scenes in it. It is a realistic type of movie

trailer which depicts what happens when you fall in love in conservative society and does not follow

romantic movie conventions of all glitters and a happy ending.

Camera shots and angles were picked up mostly from Tarrantino movies the behind the head shot and

face tracking shot was inspirations from an Indian movie called Dev D for which i saw its making they

used a mounted camera on the actors body but that i could not simply afford so i tied the camera to the

actors body and made him operate it during the shoot. i followed the convention of telling the trailer

story in a chronological order. And used black and white sequence in the end as a tribute to Schindlers

List and neo noir films which were shot in black and white regardless of the technology present.

Q2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary tasks?

The ancillary tasks for my a2 portfolio were to make a movie poster and a magazine cover to glorify my

movie trailer, a sort of advertisement for the movie. Being a business studies student as well I used the

advertising strategies portion to design and attract the consumer and to lure him/her into buying my

product. I wanted my posters to be kind of a replica of what the movie might be all about and allow the

customer to build an expectation by seeing the poster and the magazine cover of what he/her might be

consuming.

The movie poster I made was just spontaneous and not inspired. I just had a blank canvas on Photoshop

and brainstormed for a while to create something out of scratch. I wanted it to be a dark themed one so

I used dark colors to portray the emotions of depression and fear. I used an anonymous mask on one

side of the characters face to project that he is just a normal nobody and has a dark side to himself.

The magazine poster was an inspiration from when I typed magazine posters on google image search. It

combined different elements of various magazine covers. I wanted it to look attracting and full of colors

so that when it’s on the stand the customer would want to pick it up because of its bright colors. I used

yellow because I learned that supermarkets use yellow often when they launch a new promotion to

attract customers. I used the main character of the trailer as the magazine model to advertise my movie

as much as possible.

Overall the combination of the three should or could have a brutal impact on the market as the three

support each other in every way possible. Initial feedback which I got from close friends and relatives

was overall positive as they all believed that with a market shifting towards reality based content and

movies featuring more realistic action this could very much be a success.

Q3 In what ways did u use media technologies in the creation of your media products?

I used a Dslr Nikon 5200 to capture my video footage and did not used a tripod as I filmed it via guerrilla

shooting techniques. I shot it in the maximum available resolution and frames per seconds which was

1080p at 50 frames per second which allowed me to work on my clips with any pixel loose or bad

quality.

I used adobe premiere cs6 as I researched that all professionals use it and I found it to be a powerful

video editing software. I imported my chosen video clips onto it and then started to trim them to show

continuity. Added a bunch of filters and stuff to give the clips a darker tone. I also use adobe audition to

mix my track so that it matched the pace and content of the video.

Thirdly the internet “the blessing” which has been the major contender in helping me being inspired and

being aware of all the media advancements over the years. Websites like Youtube, Imdb and many more

have given me so much content to absorb and made me capable of producing my movie trailer.

Living in a third world developing country I won’t say that editing the content was a piece of cake

Problems ranged from slow computers which resulted in slow rendering times and electricity shortages

which often resulted in my work being lost and had to start over again. i bought a battery just to

give my computer extra time to save my data and shut down safely.

On the whole it was a fun and joyful experience to get to know about the new advances of technology in

media and being able to use them to create my content. I absorbed so much learned so much from the

camera usage to the editing of the film which sure did fulfilled my answers and my curiosity of how it is

all done.
