Questionnaire results
For my rock magazine
Outline of my questionnaire
• 20 copies of this questionnaire was given out to a opportunity sample of peers that fit my target audience for my rock magazine (which are males and females aged 16-19years old).
• My questionnaire consists of 14 questions, equally split into 3 qualitative questions and 11 quantitative.
• I have structured the questionnaire to focus on two main areas: my target audience’s knowledge of overall rock music, and their own views on music magazines and what they find most appealing.
• These results will help me shape my magazine and improve it so suit my target audience and to make it look as professional as possible.
Example of my questionnaire:
This is a sample of one of my participant’s answers.
1) What gender are you?
Gender
Male
Female
I handed out 20 questionnaires, to 10 males and 10 females aged 16-19years old. I did this to as they represent my target audience, as my magazine would be unisex.

Female
This question is relevant to to questionnaire as it allows me to see which gender I should focus my magazine on more. Even though my magazine will appeal to both males and females, these results conclude that more males listen to rock, and so my magazine will be more aimed at males.
3) Circle the rock artists you have heard of:
Rock artists
The Pretty Reckless
My Chemical Romance
Metallica
Three Days Grace
Placebo
In the questionnaire I gave some examples of rock artists to decide which artists should be featured in the magazine. Most of my target audience had heard of Metallica and My Chemical Romance. Therefore I will use these artists as my influence to create my own rock artist. I will use their clothing style and image to copy onto my own model.

Purchase music magazines?
Target audience
I asked my 20 participants if they purchased a music magazine. From the results, 17 participants do purchase a music magazine. This concludes that people tend to use music magazines as a form of information and this type of media is quite popular.
5) If ticked ‘yes’, please state the name of the music magazine you purchase:
• Out of the 20 participants asked, 17 circled ‘yes’ to purchasing a music magazine. They were then asked to write down the name of the magazine they purchase. Some of the replies featured:
1. Kerrang! 2. NME 3. Quiz
• These answers are important as they give me ideas of how to style my own magazine. I have chosen to base my music magazine on Kerrang as it is also a rock magazine and has a similar target audience.
6) How often would you like a music magazine to be published?

Frequency of publishing
Target Audience
My 20 participants were asked how often they would prefer a music magazine to be published. The most popular answer is ‘fortnightly’ therefore my magazine will be published every 2 weeks.
7) What section of a music magazine are you most interested in?
Features in a magazine
Interviews
Gig dates
Posters
New Releases
This question was design to help me decide what would occupy the double page spread in my magazine. The most popular choice of music magazine features is ‘interviews’ therefore my double page spread will consist of an interview with my main artist which will also be on the front cover of the magazine. I have also decided to include some posters as ‘freebees’ in my magazine as they have been the second popular choice, and also more people would be inclined to buy the magazine for the free gift.
8) How much would you willingly pay for a music magazine?

Target Audience
My magazine will cost between £2-£3 as it is the most popular choice within the target audience of 16-19year olds. I have taken into account that the audience are students, however as my magazine is targeted at the middle class reader and will be a fortnightly magazine I believe they will not argue with this decision.
9) Pick your preferred name for a rock magazine?
Chaos
Utterance
Destruct
Distortion
I will use the title ‘Destruct’ as it is the most popular title choice for a rock magazine. Chaos was the least popular with 0 votes.
10) What sort of image should be published on the front cover?
• Most of the participants answered with statements such as ‘images of the artist’ and ‘medium close up shots of the artist’. They also said that they would like the model to have props with them and exciting expressions on their face. I will take all of this information into account when I take the pictures of my models for my rock magazine.
11) What colours would you associate a rock magazine with?

My 20 participants were able to circle as many choices as they wanted. The most popular were black, red and white. I will use these colours as the main colour scheme of my magazine, as well as including some others to make it more interesting. The colour scheme will also help to attract my target audience as they are unisex colours.
12) Do you go to concerts/gigs?
Concerts\gigs?
Yes
No
I decided to ask this question as I didn’t know whether to include any concert or gig offers in my magazine. After this questionnaire, I have decided to include an offer or two on my front cover, as most of my target audience has circled ‘yes’ to going to concerts, so I know that that will interest them.
13) If you ticked ‘yes’ please state the name of the last gig you attended:
• I asked this question as I do not go to any concerts and so am unaware of the many types of gigs available. To get an idea of the type on concerts I want to advertise, I asked my target audience the question above. Most of them responded with single artist concerts such as ‘Black Veil Brides’ or the latest ‘Asking Alexandra’ tour, however some responded with bigger tours such as the ‘Warped tour’ which various bands play at.
• I have therefore decided to advertise either the 2014 Warped tour, or a tour similar to that as it will attract more people, than a single artist concert as more band varieties will interest a wider audience.
14) Would you buy a music magazine simply because it has a free gift?
Free gift
Yes
No
Even though free gifts are exciting, the participants I asked did not feel that the need to buy music magazines revolve around the ‘free gift’. They are an added bonus, however my target audience would not decide to purchase a music magazine solely on whether it has a freebee.
