Question 5 – How did you attract/address your audience?

By Katie Wright

Enticing an audience

• For a slasher film to have appeal to fans of the sub-genre it must have tension, intrigue and gore.

• It must also follow the iconography’s of the genre, as the audience have expectations of what happens in a slasher film.

Setting tension

These close ups shows more of the characters face instead of the surrounding which means the audience cant see where the antagonist is lurking which projects fear and tension. Also but using close ups of his face you can see his fear, which is then projected across to the audience which makes them feel more nervous.

This shot shows the antagonist pass in the background, but his features are blurred which tells the audience he is on the hunt which creates emotional pleasures.

Setting tensionFor this part, we used flashing light effects to create nerving tension, as well as blurry camera effects so the audience couldn’t see clearly what was happening. This would then hopefully create fear and tension which then adds to the emotional pleasure.

Audience research

• Throughout our production process we were keen to find out what the audience thought we could do to improve our film opening.

• We did this using a range of questions which the audience were able to give open minded responses to the questions which we were able to summarise and use for improvements.

Audience research

• Our audience thought it was important to build up tension and to emphasise areas of loud and quiet.

• We achieved this by creating our own incidental music so we were able to add in areas of loud and quite and time it with the film opening so it created a good amount of tension.

Audience research

• We have achieved interest with our film as our focus group said it built up the right amount of suspense and would like to have seen more to see what would happen after.

• We also used teenagers in our film so it would relate to the target audience, but is also conventional towards the sub-genre as they are the most vulnerable age group.
