WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTIONS

MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA

PRODUCT AND WHY?

Media Evaluation, Question three

INSTITUTIONS

I this question I will explore the ways our thriller film should be

distributed and with what company.

There are several option when deciding how to distribute our

film. The main choice is whether to use an independent film

company or a conglomerate film company

ADVANTAGES OF USING A BIG CONGLOMERATE

The most important factor is that they are more well known. Having there names associated with our film audience may be more inclined to watch the film.

There is also an assumed security in using conglomerate as they can generally guarantee a films success with their industrial dominance.

Using a big conglomerate give us the advantage of using better effects, editing, filming etc. as they will have more money (budget)

The connection that the conglomerate has with other films, as some companies own or have partnerships with cinemas. This then secures that our film will make it to the cinemas and go nationally if not globally.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF USING A BIG

CONGLOMERATE

The first issue would be persuading them to distribute the film. Most companies only distribute films that have certain conventions and characteristics, as they almost guarantee success from a film. Anything that brakes these will not be taken.

However putting in so much money to get the film recognised they will want a large share of the profit made.

It is very unlikely that they will want to use our own ideas on distribution as they have their experts in this field. Also being such a big company they may want to change some aspects of our film to make it more appealing to the audience and distribution.

WHICH CONGLOMERATE

If we were to distribute our film with a big conglomerate we would use Warner Brother as the have had successful thriller films such as inception. We would also use New Line Cinema as they released Seven. The final conglomerate we would use is Paramount as they distributed Shutter Island.

As you can see these are all US companies that have a very big budget and influence which would then benefit distributing our film. The types of films that these companies are much larger productions with a bigger budget therefore it would be very likely to take it on and distribute a niche audience film.

UK COMPANIES

By using a UK film company is an alternative way of getting our film distributed whilst still holding its British identity, which would be lost if we used a US conglomerate. These UK companies are also a lot smaller therefore would wants less of the profit made. However using these they would not be able to distribute our film to such a global level. If we were to use a UK company we would have Bedlam productions which was in partnership of The Kings Speech. Another company that we would use is between the eyes as they distributed shifty. Our final company that would be used is Archer Street Films that produced the Railway Man. These were all fairly successful film however they still did not reach the global scale.

INDEPENDENT COMPANIES

The British Film Industry is funded by the lottery and offers 17million for the production and development of UK films. Due to the limited amount of funding they can give to films each year, films must meet certain criteria to be classed as British film In order to get any funding.

The British Film Industry also offers help to independent film makers, short films, script writers, distribution and exhibition needs. Our thriller film has many features that the British Film Industry require, therefore it would be easy for the film to meet the necessary criteria to get the grant.

ALTERNATIVE METHODS

YouTube- YouTube would be a great way to distribute our film as it has no cost to upload it and huge amount of people have access to it and wouldn’t have to pay much to watch it if not any money at all. People would also be able to share the videos with there friends increasing our audience.

Although we would be able to reach a lot of people as YouTube is a very popular source we would not make profit from the film this way. Also the method makes it seem like a very amateur film and may deter people from watching it. Putting it on the internet increases this risk of illegal distribution as well.

CONCLUSION

Considering all of the options, Between The Eyes would be the best for distribute our film.

The company has had pervious success and is starting to make a name for itself, therefore we would take the risk with going with them. Due to these previous success it has enough influence to get the film recognised in UK cinemas. Also being a British company and considering its previous work, Shifty, it will also keep the identity of the film, to which will attract some audiences and connect with others.
