Page 2: Question 3

What is a distributor?

A distributor is an organisation who handles the theatrical release of a film in a particular country and well as the marketing and circulation of films for home viewing. For example: DVD, Blue Ray, Download, television and Internet sites such as YouTube.

Page 3: Question 3

What distributor we chose? When deciding on a distributor we wanted to chose some one who was a low budget, British company who produced the same genre as us (horror). We initially had a rough idea of who we wanted to distribute our film as we ourselves fit in to our target audience and have experience of watching horror movies. When completing further research as to who to chose to distribute our film we decided on Film four and Blumhouse.

Why Film four?Film four is a British independent production company owned and operated by channel four corporation, that screens films. We chose this as our film distributor as our film is an individual British based film which fits the criteria for film four. The film four production company is also known for distributing a wide genre of films (including horror) which is also an important factor as we have a horror film.Film four has distributed the likes of: Ouija, Horns, The Babadook and Anabelle which are all members of the horror genre. Films distributed with film four have a wide range of BBFC ratings including the BBFC rating that we have chosen (15).Film Four runs throughout the day on Britihsh tv and has internet platforms in which audiences are able to catch up on movies that they have missed. Many of the horror-thriller movies run during evening hours which is perfect as out target audience will be returning from school/college/work at these times.

Why Blumhouse?Blumhouse productions is a movie production company who is know for production micro- and low budget horror movies such as paranormal activity, insidious and sinister. These movies are very similar in genre to our film and therefore helped us make our decision. Blumhouse Productions is also known for distribution movies that are a rating of 15 or above (including the ones mentioned above) which also helped us make our decision.

Identifying our association with Film four and Blumhouse

To show that we are using Film four and Blumhouse as our distributors we have inserted both of their logos at the start of our opening sequence (Film Four first then followed by Blumhouse). In addition to this, we have also used Jason Blum’s (the man who founded and runs Blumhouse production) name within our opening sequence.

Upon seeing these logos, the audience will automatically will make a connection between the production companies and previous films they have seen. As a result the audience are able to predict the type of movie/sequence they are about to watch .

Why didn’t we chose a bigger, globally known distributor.

We as a group thought it would be inappropriate to use a ‘Hollywood’ distributor as they require a large amount of money and are mainly aimed towards the American public. As we were creating a low budget, British film we thought it would be appropriate to chose Film Four as this is exactly the criteria we were looking for. Also, because it is a cheaper distributor, we as a film company will be able to afford it as we are on a low budget. Blumhouse is also a cheap, independent distributor which again, fits out critera perfectly. I also foucses on horror thriller genres which helped make our decision as to what distributor to use as we thought it was important to have a supporting horror distributor for our horror-thriller movie. We chose this as apposed to using a distributor such as ‘Wildgaze Films’ Who are known for producing well respected, old school indie films.
