Page 1: Question 3

Question 3- What have you learned from your

audience feedback?

After I had completed the first draft of my trailer, as a classa screening was arranged to gain some constructiveaudience feedback, this allowed me to find out; what wasgood about my trailer, what the audience enjoyed, how Icould improve and what I had successfully, making itconventional to real thriller trailers.

Page 2: Question 3

• In order to gain feedback I handed outquestionnaires and also conducted both audioand visual interviews with members of theaudience, to obtain in depth qualitative dataas well as quantitative data from thequestionnaires.

The audience

• Altogether, there were 32 Participants who took part in the screening and completed the questionnaires,

• This audience ranged form ages 16- 50+, this wide age range was beneficial to me as different age groups have varying views and this meant that I was more likely to receive a greater amount of constructive criticism enabling me to improve my product a great deal.

• However, around half of the participants were media students and within the age range of my target audience and this meant that if they were pleased my target audience would definitely be pleased with the trailer, it would be successful in its purpose meaning that most people would want to watch the full film.

• Because they were media students they could also give me advise on the more technical parts of the trailer and I found this largely beneficial, the more criticism they better I could improve my product.

What was good/ what they enjoyed.

• I found that the majority understood the storyline and also reallyliked it, felt that the music was conventional to its genre, and theshort length of scenes were fitting.

• I gathered this from the fact that 94% of participants said that theyunderstood the storyline ( the title of the film was assisting to theirunderstanding) and 78% said they would watch the film.

Page 13: Question 3

How I could improve?

• Change the typography, make it more clearthat Rachel was being stalked/ watched.

• Include a voice over since most thriller trailershave voiceovers, more characters to make thefilm’s title more impactful.

Page 14: Question 3

What I had included which made it look conventional to real trailers?

• Short scenes, suspense, background music were the most common themes from my feedback.

Page 15: Question 3

What I did with this feedback? / How did I change my trailer to incorporate the feedback and improve it?

• I Thought of ways to make it more clear that Rachel wasbeing followed by winter, I decided to include a voice overcoming from winter’s point of view, his thoughts instead ofa narrator, since some of the responses from my audiencefeedback also said a voice over is a possible way ofimproving the trailer, it was even more of a plus.

• I changed the font of the typography to make it more fittingwith the genre.

• The editing phase was incomplete, so the precision andtiming of transitions were tightened up and I added somequiet background music to play throughout rather than thetraffic or silence. Which really made a huge differencekeeping the audience engaged.

Page 16: Question 3

• Audience theory such as Blumer and Katz’s Uses andGratification theory argues that the audience is active anduses the text for its own gratification and pleasure, themain reasons for the consumption of media are;diversion, escapism information and pleasure. Pleasure andescapism seem to be the main reasons for watching thrillerfilms as they entertain, distract us from our daily lives andresponsibilities, gripping our attention, creating suspenseand feelings of anxiety in the audience.

• Since I received feedback saying that my trailer successfullycreated suspense and that they would watch the film thefeedback tells me that I have managed to entertain anddivert my audience.
