Evaluating a ‘trashy’ television magazine

Date of magazine

The title is in large capital letters to present the importance of the main feature, which is emphasised by the exclamation mark. The use of the colour- clash combination (red, yellow and black) creates an eye-catching feature.

Anchoring

The masthead is over-sized and bold, positioned in top left corner of page. This is because it follows the order in which we read and helps to establish the magazine brand name first. Allows the readers to develop brand loyalty.

Price tag is in a star like sticker, this helps to suggest that it provides value for money and is a worthy buy. Since price is an important feature of this magazine, it uses several clashing colours to help the stand out.

Tabs listing days of the week; Mon-Sun. This is a useful tool for readers to help them to find right page quickly.

Other soaps used with one liners to engage a wider audience and present the idea that this magazine has close knowledge of the soap through its personal slang.

Magazine website, used to help further engage the audience after reading the magazine.

Conventions of a magazine1Magazine is free as part of the News Of The World; website is listed at the top as well.

The use of only one main picture on the front, with the iconic Pasty, is used due to the theory of mirroring with Lacan, as people will want to change the representation of themselves to look like her and readers will be attracted to the magazine.

The masthead is in flowing, italic writing. This helps to attract a female audience and is enhanced by being in front of the image as it appears to be branded across the woman’s forehead. This suggests it is a must-have for women.

The use of the descriptive word title helps to portray the idea of how ‘fabulous; the magazine is, but can also be seen as a reflection on the readers and how ‘fabulous’ they are for buying it.

Issue number and date of the magazine

As there is no background showing, this helps to enhance how ‘big’ of a celebrity she is as she fills the whole page, suggesting the magazines ability to gain a famous person. Moreover, by showing all of her beauty features, this helps to engage the audience by being appealing and enticing.

The anchor is cantered which is not a normal generic convention for a magazine. This helps to suggest that the magazine’s article is slightly different from others which can be intriguing for readers. The anchor relates to Patsy about going against Botox which is seen as out of the ordinary because she is renown for plastic surgery.

Page 5: Question 2 new

The repetitive use of the lime green writing helps to establish the brand of the magazine and create a consistent look.

The contrast in background colours helps to establish different ideas about the magazine. The black helps to portray an intriguing, sharp and edgy vibe which relates to the image of Zayn, a member of anew successful boy-band, whereas the white portrays a fresh, crisp ideas which relates more to the professionalism of Lorraine, an apprentice finalist.

The slight change in colour on the sub-section also helps to connate towards the different features of the magazine. The use of pink symbolises a strong, hot and eccentric vibe whereas the use of purple creates a soft, classic and mellow idea.

Both magazine covers also have their featured models in a pose that helps to create eye contact. This helps to engage the reader and draw them into the magazine.

Although both magazines use eye contact it is used in a different format,. Zayn is shown with sultry, appealing eyes relating to the idea that he is a young heart throb. However Lorraine has open, fresh eyes that look promising suggesting her business future is on the rise.

Front Cover

For my ancillary product I went along the lines of using a similar name to that of ‘Fabulous’ . ‘Exclusive’ was used as it seems classy, but also appealing as it is seen as unique and desirable. I decided to mimic the ‘Fabulous’ magazine as it is seen as stylish and also I felt I could easily use it as a template . But as the writing was also simple and neat it allows the eye contact in the picture to tell most of the story and grab the readers attention. I also copied the colour techniques of pink and lime green.

MY PRODUCT:The masthead in front of character to help identify the brand and make it stand out. Yet, it also links in with the rest of the magazine due to the bright colours and pink lipstick.

Covers star name is identified in bold colourful writing ‘CRISTAL’ to establish her as an important character and new star.

Anchor is used to allow the reader to understand the articles that will be in the magazine.

Date, time. The twitter and website links help to show the magazine as current and encourages further involvement with the magazine after reading it.

The extreme close up of character with winking as its facial expression, helps to engage the reader and further adds to the exclusive idea as it seem cheeky and selective.

E4 poster: Misfits evaluation

The orange jump suits gives you a sense that they are in prison (like Guantanamo bay) or community service and gives a background idea to the drama. But it is also an eye catching colour and creates contrasts with the mainly dull backgrounds.

The over casted clouds suggest that lightning has hit them. This then enforces the reason for the body actions given. It also adds mystery to the programme, but a spark of electricity to create interest.

The inclusions of all these aspects suggests that the characters have superpowers as it relates to the events that occur in childhood hero stories. But the programme is seen as tweaked and different as they are classed as “Misfits” rather than heroes.

Different facial expression portray the different thoughts and emotions of each characters. It helps to suggest that each character is different which creates the idea of an interesting story, but initially establishes the personalities of each.

E4 strip with its representing colour and logo establishes the channel to watch it on.

All characters are used in the poster to help the reader identify with all of them

My Product:E4 Branding – E4 colour scheme: Purple and white

E4 logo is the usual generic of sticker and strap. This is used to make it look realistic.

American typewriter is used to copy the E4 style – give them the date and time to tell them when to tune in.

Characters are put in order next to each other to link stories together. String used to make them look like puppets and also show the whole storyline as a whole as well.

Background is in black to make the characters stand out.

Characters have similar clothing so audience can identify them.

Pun is used to link in with the puppet them so audience understand what the poster is about.

Page 9: Question 2 new

As a group we brain stormed many ideas and with the inclusion of a little internet research we came up with the idea of ‘puppets on a string’. We went against the normal conventions of a poster with the cast usually either shown in screen-play action or stood in a confirmed triangular line. We used the inspiration from Misfits poster to challenge the conventions and help to make our programme seem original and different.

The reason for choosing a puppet theme was due to it incorporating the elements of our storyline in one still image. This is because it helps to illustrate how Natalie (e.g. Sierra) is controlling the characters in the trailer as she is the one who knows everything – she is the puppet master controlling everyone’s actions. We hoped that this originality with this theme will gain the attention of both the demographic audience and larger a field as they want to understand the reasons for her ability to control others.

My mood board portrays the products, brands and life styles my audience are interested in. These aspects are what I have aimed to use in my soap trailer to create its brand identity. After my research I found that some of the aspects of my mood board link well with E4 styled programmes, especially those which establish wealth and student life. This influenced the choice of what was used in our programme such as BLACKBERRY PHONES

Representing “wealth” through The EdgeGenre

Expensive clothing of Ralph Lauren . Signs of wealth as its high street, upper class clothing

High heels- worn by the upper class when going out for expensive meals out.

Clothing is not seen to be a usual student clothing. But that of someone with money has a good job, able too afford expensive, luxury gifts.

Use of Cristal in name on magazine shows wealth. As it is seen to be an expensive asset involved in jewellery which is portrayed on to the character.

TVs listingE4 TV listings shows what shows are on what time on E4.

As my show is aimed at being on E4 we used Hollyoaks as a shadow and we see that it is on late at 7pm and so we wanted to copy this timing.

I find that this meets the demographic of a soap as they are usually watched for relaxing entertainment when the audience is home from school or work.

Page 13: Question 2 new

Institution-E4Our soap is suitable for E4. The reason for this is demonstrated in our trailer. This is because it contains the usual soap convention situations, the classic locations and the attractive, appealing but mysterious characters. This allows our target market to relate to our programme as it is similar to other programmes that are broadcasted on the E4 channel.

E4 Style GuideI used the E4 off-air identity style guide to ensure that the colours, sizes of the E4 logo and font used for my ancillary products are correct.

From these print screens I was able to follow the guide to understand the position and size to have my logo and straps. This allowed me to make it look as realistic as possible and therefore appeal to the necessary audience.

This strap showed me exactly where to position and how big the banner should look on my billboard in order for ancillary product to look

professional and fit with E4’s Brand identity.

Audience/Institution-E4 From audience research I found that:• The same audience demographic is seen across all media shown on E4• The same fonts are used throughout all pieces of media• The use of similar characters and age groups within all products in both the ancillary and main trailer

The same audience was addressed by the E4 institution • I used E4 Style guide to create the ideology and realism of an E4 media product

and mimicking other E4 advertising
