QUESTION 2HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

REPRESENTATION

Representation is the way in which something or someone is portrayed. Regarding media, representation is the way we class someone socially. The 7 social classes of representation are:

• Age

• Gender

• Sexuality

• Ethnicity

• Regional Identity

• Class

• Disability

MY TARGET AUDIENCE/ AGE• My target audience age is 8-16 and is

clearly young females as demonstrated by the use of colloquial language, lots of secondary images and bright colour scheme. I wanted to put teens in a positive light by creating a happy vibrant magazine to break negative stereotypes of teens. These negative stereotypes means that teens can be seen as trouble makers, lazy, vandalisms, rude and unruly as this is the general stereotype of how teens are presented in the media. However I wanted to represent my audience as young happy aspiring teens with big dreams. This is done through my colour scheme and use of young talented celebrities such as Tiffany.

GENDER

• I have represented Tiffany as a beautiful pure inspirational and glamorous female though the costume, hair and makeup. My main feature is a female in order to emphasize girl power of this magazine. I wanted her to be represented as an attractive woman so teens would aspire to be like her but if male they would also be attracted to her. I wanted to present all my models in my pictures as successful role models who are very attractive so that the audience would want to pick up the magazine. I’ve used a sophisticated smart costume for the males which is suits so they appear attractive and famous and so that females will want to read about them.

CLASS

In order to make my models in my images appear famous, I needed to make them appear wealthy and well dressed therefore I chose a sophisticated costumes such as suits and ball gowns to suggest that they are superior and of a high social class due to their musical fame. However I do use some more casual costumes in some images to suggest anyone can achieve their dreams just by working working hard so this encourages readers to buy my magazine.
