How effective is the combination of your

main product and ancillary task?

Page 2: Question 2

In real industry, both my short film and my print products might all be produced by the same production company. A marketing team at the film company would source material from the film to produce the poster and send out publicity ‘packs’ to magazines so that they can complete their reviews.

Therefore to ensure that mine looked like a convincing final product, I had to make sure that the poster correctly represented the fi lm and the magazine review offered a realistic interpretation of a possible viewpoint of the fi lm.

To make it clear that all 3 tasks are part of the same project, it is essential they use similar media language

Page 3: Question 2

Something I was keen that should appear throughout my tasks was a kind of ‘scrapbook’ theme.

From my initial idea, I knew that I wanted my work to have a personal feel to it, just like a scrapbook would.

I feel I achieved this on my poster by collecting the stills from my film and physically making them into a collage, which I then scanned into the computer.

The handwritten style of the title font also helps the poster to appear more personal.

Page 4: Question 2

The first thing you see in the film is a notebook with the title of the film written on it. This is similar to the

handwritten font of the poster, and the notebook connotes the scrapbook theme.

For the opening section of the film, I used montage editing with the intention of it looking almost as if someone was scrolling through a scrapbook. Stills from this section appear in the background of the

poster, showing unity between the two.

The beginning and end sequences of the film both include a voiceover. The content of this, again implies

to the audience that this is a very personal film – it almost sounds as if it could have been taken straight

from someone’s diary.

When it came to creating my film review, I had to find an existing publication that might realistically include an article about my short film. Because it is not really mainstream, I had to instantly dismiss magazines such as ‘Empire’ and ‘Sight And Sound’ as I didn’t feel my film fit in with their layout and style. As a starting point I googled and came across Little White Lies. I was already familiar with this publication due to some previous work I had seen and I knew instantly that the style of this magazine would suit my short film really well. It is similar to the poster in that it has a still of the film at the top, and I feel that overall I have successfully represented the quite ‘niche’ sentiments of the film.

GENRE Red has very strong connotations with love

Object connotation: flowers with romance

I feel that the documentary genre isn’t quite as apparent, but the background images of single people in a shot could imply an interview, which is a common feature within the documentary genre

My short film is a hybrid of two genres: romance and documentary. This is important because audiences will most likely decide whether or not to see the film, based on their anticipation of it’s theme and genre. The genre must be successfully represented throughout the three products.

Stills from existing romance films obviously suggest that this short film is going to be the same genre

Page 7: Question 2

ROMANCEIn the first shot, the notebook is laying on a duvet covered with hearts, which have strong connotations with love and romance. Therefore, the audience instantly know what the film is about.

The costumes and iconography from the fictional sequence in the

montage all connote typical fifties Hollywood romance films

The short clips from existing romance films implies that they are important within the context of this short film,

suggesting it also has something to do with love

DOCUMENTAYMontage editing, used in both the opening

and closing sequences is a common feature of documentary, and is similar to the collage style of the poster

Use of voiceover is also a popular convention of documentary. In my film it helps to inform the audience as well as making the film more personal like I intended

Interviews allow members of the public to express their feelings and opinions about a particular subject. This form of promoting information is often used in documentaries
