    Challenge Forms and Conventions Of

    Real Media Products?

    Location

Britain is also seen as veryhistorical to younger countriessuch as the USA and Earlhampark is an historical location.

I took inspiration for the locationof the music video from the filmThe Piano.

    Costume

The costume in my music video for the girl is

fairly generic of the music videos I have

    researched regarding the folk genre

Narrative structureWhen researching music videos of similar artists I found that most anti folk

music videos feature the artist and therefore have elements of performance

within them. However due to the fact that I did not have access to the artist of

Bone and Claw I chose to tell a story through a predominantly linear narrativerather than get somebody to act as the performer. This was also a beneficial

choice because eradicated the problem of lip synching.

After exploring the use of flashbacks (see the next two slides) I chose to tell a

story through a linear narrative. I have developed the idea of using a narrative

in music videos by creating somewhat of a day in the life video, which is not

usually seen in videos. One example of a video which does use a day in thelife narrative is If I Were a Boy by Beyonc, I looked at both this video and

BBCs Britain In A Day when deciding on a narrative and as a result decided

that a linear narrative telling the story of the relationship

within my video; as the use of a day in the life in the

aforementioned media products suggests that the

instances shown are a common occurrence. Which is how

    I wanted to portray

the threat from themother and the

    influence of this

    threat on the

    daughters everyday

    life.

    5/14

I originally intended to use flashback in myvideo, a commonly used narrative in the music

industry [FIND EXAMPLE] as I wanted to

portray the mother and daughter relationship in

both the past and the present (the time that the

video is set). I wanted to suggest that these

memories were seen through rose tintedglasses by the daughter and to achieve this I

manipulated the colour balance in the

flashback scenes to seem brighter and more

over exposed than the rest of the video.

Whereas usually a flashback is distinguished

from the present using a sepia or clack and

white filter during the flashback and colour in

the present. I took inspiration for my use ofcolour in flashbacks from T.V drama North and

South, in which the north is grey and cold

looking, suggesting realism and the south is

recalled as over bright and sunny, suggesting

that what is remembered as a happy time in

    reality was not.Flashback from North

    and South

After inserting these flashback scenes into the music video

however I realised that they did not fit and merely confused

the narrative. Instead I used one flashback scene, of the

daughter blowing candles out on a cake while the mother

holds it laughing, as an establishing shot for the relationship

between both performers. To keep the idea that the daughter

has fond memories of unpleasant occurrences I put this scenebefore we see the girl waking, so as to suggest that this is a

dream or wish more than a reality.

    Lighting

My music video uses mainly ambient

lighting mostly because I did not have themeans to use non ambient lighting but

also to add a sense of realism to my

video. This use of lighting is often seen in

genres such as soaps and dramas and I

have taken inspiration from these genres

regarding the lighting of my music video

and used the conventions of ambient

lighting. One Drama In which ambient

lighting is used to illustrate a bad

    relationship through the addition of

realism is BBC series White Girl. White

Girl tells the story of a family who move

to a wholly Asian community to escape

the mothers boyfriend, who has an

    abusive relationship with the family,

    especially the eldest daughter.

transitionsIt is generic in music videos to use jump cuts and quick shots to progress a narrative

and to ensure that the audience do not become bored. Especially when the video is fora particularly up tempo track. However there are a few music videos which usetransitions such as cross dissolve a lot more often than jump cuts. This can be seen inthe video for Sinad OConnors Nothing Compares 2 U in which there are manycross dissolves between the artist singing and location shots and from location shot tolocation.

Jackson Brownes Tender is the Night video also uses dissolves alongside jump cuts toillustrate that certain parts of the video are memories or dreams rather than a currentreality. He remembers fighting with his girlfriend and then remembers or perhapswishes they are happy.

In Aspel Orchids Bone and Claw video dissolves have been heavily used in order to

convey a feeling of nightmare and a dream like state that the girl performer isexperiencing. So it is not evident whether or not the mother is a figment of herimagination or a genuine threat. In a way this is using conventions of the music videogenre shown in videos such as the two discussed. That being said it could be arguedthat my music video challenges the traditional conventions of the music industry as,more often than not, jump cuts and other fast transitions are used as the predominanttransitions.

    Representation

WomenIt is common in the music industry to objectify women inmusic videos, even when the performer of a track is a female, when this performer is seen in the music video they are stillcommonly sexualised. This is seen in videos by artists such asBeyonc. This is consistent with Goodwins theory on thesubject of women in music videos ISABEL CONTINUE

However this is seen less often in folk and anti folk videos, especially those by female artists; as Bone and Claw is. What isseen more often in folk music is the marginalisation of womenin music videos. For example in the video for This Year by TheMountain Goats women simply do not appear in a significantway. The one female in the video is largely ignored, this maybe because the performers of the band are all male.

In my video I have challenged the way that women aretraditionally viewed, as there is an absence of men in thevideo. The sexualisation of women traditionally seen in themusic industry has been challenged in my music video; asneither performer is seen to dress provocatively in any way

    Britishness:

Cultural signifiers are often shown in music videos to demonstrate the artists

roots. I have used shots of Earlham Park in Norwich as a cultural signifier dueto the expectation for England to be full or countryside. Upon typing British

stereotypes into Google it does not take time to find a website backing this

view Mine [thoughts of Britain] are fish and chips, rolling hills and sarcasm

This common stereotype of England can be seen in many North American

television shows, below are images from Buffy The Vampire Slayer in whichthe new location of England is established. Beside them is a still from my

    music video for comparison.

    Relationships:

Two examples of texts that portray the mother/daughter relationship in asinister light are Peter Jacksons biopic Heavenly Creatures and BBCadaptation of Jeanette Wintersons Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit.

The relationship shown in HC (Heavenly Creatures) shows conflictbetween mother and daughter as the daughter wishes to join her friendwho is soon moving back to England. As a result the two girls murder themother, meaning that the daughter is shown as more of a threat than themother. I have used the indication of threat which is often seen in Mediatexts such as HC in my music video. In my Bone and Claw video however I

have developed the idea that is seen in this text by moving the threat fromthe daughter, or the young, and toward the mother. This has developedthe

The way that I have portrayed the relationship between both performerssuggests that parental relationships in Britain are deteriorating and

dysfunctional. This is a representation often seen in British soap operassuch as Coronation street and Eastenders, however is not often seen inmusic videos of the folk genre and so could be said to be challenging themusic genre.
