Question 1In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

conventions of real media products?

Thriller conventions

Some of the conventions of a thriller are:• Dramatic and intense non-diegetic sound• Suspense/Mystery• Ambiguity• To foreshadow something

When making our thriller opening we aimed to use these conventions as well as subverting them as it is aimed at a mainstream audience.

Dramatic and intense non-diegetic sound

• The music we have used is eerie and mysterious which is conventional of a thriller as it creates suspense and tension for the audience.

Suspense/mystery Starts off with these shots which creates suspense and mystery. It also sets the scene and the identity of any character has not been revealed yet, which creates suspense.

These four shots have been taken from the end of the opening sequence as they are short takes. Therefore, the speed of the shots increases which builds suspense for the audience.

Suspense/mysteryThese four shots build tension and a sense of mystery as the whole identity of the character isn’t revealed. Also, the shark was placed before shots of Molly. In each shot of the shark it was zoomed in more than the last one. We did this as it implied something about Molly’s character as sharks can be vicious and dangerous.

Similarly, in the opening sequence of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ they have used short takes, which create suspense.

AmbiguityThese shots create suspense and mystery as the identity of this character (Molly) is not revealed throughout the opening. We did this to cover her identity from the audience which will create tension as her whole face is not shown. This was done to suggest the role of the character.

To foreshadow something

These shots foreshadow that something will happen between these characters in the narrative as these are the shown to be the main characters through the use of many shots of them.
