““INSPIRATION”INSPIRATION”Before setting to work on my print production I took inspiration from the genre of the magazine and its sub genre existing magazines, this included looking at forms and conventions of others in order to capture the correct theme for my magazine. With most music magazine genres e.g. dance, classical they offer a wider range of magazines in comparison to musical magazines which I discovered in researching that there are only two main competitors in the official musicals magazine genre, being ‘Broadway’ and ‘InTheater’.

““MERGING ELEMENTS”MERGING ELEMENTS” Without potentially copying aspects featured in musicals magazines I focused on the

main characteristics that tend to appear several times. Aspects such as these included the way the magazine uses both sans serif and serif fonts, a mostly horizontally and vertically structured format, a house style with four colours at the most used and other features within the narrative field such as the communication between the audience and the writers. I picked up on all of these elements in order to develop and challenge their forms against mine.

““FONTS”FONTS” As far as fonts were concerned I wanted to challenge the former font

styles and develop a completely different atmosphere threaded through my magazine. By doing this I decided to change my font to a sans serif capital font combined with a small italic sans serif font in simple contrasting colours, these title colours would vary by each issue, depending on the house style for that month. I used Times New Roman and Bodoni

MT. my reason for combining them together is because they work well with slightly differentiating styles without clashing too much. Above the masthead is the ‘special edition’ strapline, enhancing the attractiveness of that issue. I therefore did not include a puff such as ‘the weekly magazine of Broadway and beyond’ because I felt that this alone advertised the name enough without seeming too busy on the cover.

““CONNOTATIONS”CONNOTATIONS”

The model photography in my work connotes fashion, music, drama and make up whilst other photography featured denotes locations and themes yet also connotes vibrancy, elegance, reach ability and destination.

I think the language connotes charisma and clarification aswell as the headlines etc. adding to excitement and pleasure.

All in all throughout the front cover, contents page and double page spread the connotations are understood by it’s reader and differ hugely from similar magazines and if it were ever to exist these connotations almost get set in stone making it harder to break out towards other typed of readers once defining one sort.

““PHOTOGRAPHY ASPECTS”PHOTOGRAPHY ASPECTS”Aswell as taking new photographs of my model Joanne featured as the

actress in the issue and costume photography of friends to appear as the actual casts I also included photography of locations I have

visited to really bring the text to life such as the yellow cab photo I took in Times Square, New York and a sea view from a villa I stayed in in Turkey. It is vibrancy of pictures like this that invite the reader

to have a more realisation in their head of what is written on the glossy pages.
