Space on Front Street across from G.R. Baker Memorial Hos-pital has been secured for the new Quesnel Primary Care Clinic. The primary care clinic is an important component of the region’s physi-cian and health care recruitment strategy, and is expected to open in early 2016.

“Having a location selected for the new primary care clinic in Quesnel is an important step in stabilizing primary care services in the community,” Health Minister Terry Lake said.

“The interdisciplinary health care team and close proximity to the hospital, means this clinic can provide a strong network of ser-vices and supports for patients’ health. I would like to especially thank Minister Coralee Oakes for working so hard to accommodate this new clinic.”

#644 – 665 Front Street, the for-mer location of MLA for Cariboo North Coralee Oakes’ office, has been chosen from six applicants who responded to a request for proposals by Northern Health to house the new primary care clinic in Quesnel. The current tenants have agreed to move out quickly, which enabled Northern Health to start accessing the space for fur-ther planning starting as of Sep-tember 1.

“We know it is important for residents to have access to the care they need as close to home as possible, which is why we have worked closely with Northern Health, the municipality and local doctors to establish a primary care clinic in Quesnel,” Oakes said.

“We are excited that a space has been chosen for the clinic and are looking forward to the start of operations. I am also pleased to be able to support this process by ensuring we receive the

right space for service.”Planning is currently underway

for renovations to the space that are required to best meet the needs of health care providers and pa-tients before the clinic is opera-tional. The new clinic will likely include exam rooms, a procedure room, office space for primary care providers, and group medical/consult rooms.

“The new primary care clinic in Quesnel will feature an interdisci-plinary team of clinicians, provid-ing ease of access to various lev-els of primary care for patients,” Northern Health Quesnel Health Service Administrator Debbie Strang said.

“The team will also provide sup-port to other local physician prac-tices, further enhancing access to health care services for residents.”

Two part-time physicians who are already established in Quesnel will work out of the clinic once it is operational, along with two nurse practitioners who have re-cently been recruited to the city. The physicians and nurse practi-tioners at the primary care clinic will work with an interdisciplin-ary team, which will include men-tal health and addiction clinicians, pharmacists, dieticians, registered nurses and home support staff to provide high quality care to residents of Quesnel.  “The physicians in Quesnel con-tinue to work closely with North-ern Health and the other partners to promote the benefits of working in Quesnel,” chief of staff Dr. Diet-rick Furstenberg said.

“I am happy to see the commu-nity pull together to find ways to attract new health care provid-

ers to Quesnel and I am excited to welcome these two new nurse practitioners to the team.”

Local government partners from the City of Quesnel and the Cariboo Chilcotin Regional District continue to be strong ad-vocates in overall recruitment ef-forts. The City of Quesnel is of-fering additional benefits that will help support physicians and their families as they transition into the community. These benefits include short-term accommodation for physicians and their families and partnering with a local car dealer-ship to offer each physician a per-sonal vehicle for three months.

The City will provide ongoing support to medical professionals and their families who live in Quesnel,” Mayor Bob Simpson said.

“The Cariboo Chilcotin Region-al Hospital District continues to be a strong partner in enhancing health care services in our region,” Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Hos-pital District chair John Massier added.

“We, along with other commu-nity partners, want to help ensure that residents have the best pos-sible access to primary care.”

As the Quesnel Primary Care Clinic is in development, residents of Quesnel will continue to have access to primary care through their family practitioner and emer-gency services as required through G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital.

Primary care clinic will improve health care in

QuesnelNo one likes moving. All the packing, the discovery of clutter you had forgotten about. The unpacking and finding new locations for all of your stuff. Moving is one of those chores we all endure and it doesn’t really matter how big or small your place is.

But I can tell you, this time, I’m pretty excited about my move. I’m thrilled to be vacating my office on Front Street and making way for Quensel’s new primary care clinic.

This is another step forward in ensuring Cariboo residents have timely access to the care they need. It has taken a little longer than we wanted, but it was so important to make sure we have the right site for the clinic. As they say in real estate: it’s location, location and location.

The new clinic will be right across the street from GR Baker Memorial Hosptial, which means patients using the new clinic will be part of a network of health care providers. It’s an important component of providing a new model of care for residents.

So, the work is beginning on renovating the space to accommodate the clinic and the goal is to have it up and open in early 2016. Two part-time physicians who are already established in Quesnel will work out of the clinic once it is operational, along with two nurse practitioners who have recently been recruited to the city.

The physicians and nurse practitioners at the primary care clinic will work with an interdisciplinary team, which will include mental health and addiction clinicians, pharmacists, dieticians, registered nurses and home support staff to provide high-quality care to Quesnel residents.

This announcement follows on funding for 18 new health care assistant training spaces at the College of New Caledonia campus here in Quesnel.

As well, I am working constantly with Northern Health, city officials and local physicians to attract more health care professionals to the city. This is not the end of the road, it is the beginning.

And while Northern Health sets up the new clinic, my constituency office is up and running in its new location – Quesnel City Hall. My staff and I look forward to seeing you in our new home.

Quesnel’s Dunrovin Park Lodge celebrat-ed its 40th anniver-sary Sept. 4th, as the senior and long-term care facility enjoyed memories of the past. The celebration was well attended by residents, friends and family. There were lots of baked goods ranging from cakes to apple crumble pie. Members of the Legion stopped by to join in on the festivi-

ties and were asked to be judges for the baking contest. There were categories for best tasting, appear-ance, authentic and overall. Dunrovin started in 1975 and was initially used for intensive care patients. Dunrovin started with 40 beds and has increased to 117. The facility expanded to include an adult day program and a dementia ward in 1996. Dunrovin provides the residents a home- like environ-

ment and does not have visiting restric-tions. The staff is passionate about their work ensur-ing that residents receive the care and comfort needed. The residents are provided with three meals and snacks served daily. They provide physio-therapy, nursing care, laundry and house-keeping services. The 40th anniversary was a huge success, as everyone enjoyed the stories and desserts that were provided.

NEWS

With warmer temperatures this year, fruit has started to ripen early.

Ripe fruit plus garbage left out could result in a food conditioned bear. WildSafeBC asks that the residents of Quesnel please be responsible throughout the upcoming fall season.

Of note, bears have memories from previous seasons and they will appear in areas where they have been rewarded in the past; however, bears do not stay in areas where they are not being fed.

Five steps to deter hungry bears this fall:

1. Clean up and secure garbage as the bears are foraging for food day and night in preparation for hibernation; secure garbage 24 hours a day inside or strap the lids down to prevent bears from accessing garbage.

2. Resist the urge to put bird feeders out until snowfall; the birds have plenty of natural resources and the scent of the seeds will attract unwanted bears.

3. Turn lime and add soil to the composters as the rotting odour attracts bears; they love the insects growing in the compost and any rotting food scraps.

4. Remove all pet food from outdoors and securely store indoors; again, bears

are foraging all times of the day during the fall and will be attracted to the pet food even if it is located right next to your backdoor.

5. Fruit gleaning. Visit the Quesnel Fruit Exchange Facebook page if you are looking for fruit, have fruit to share or fruit that needs picking.

Be responsible with your fruit by removing it off of your property as well as to not allow fruit to rot on the ground below the tree thereby reducing any chances of attracting bears.

Of note, fines have been issued in the past for unsecure attractants; as stated in the Wildlife Act, 33.1 (2) Attract dangerous wildlife to land or premises $230.

This year there have been a number of cougar sightings. We (WildSafeBC and the COS), recommend that if cougars are in the area, to keep dogs supervised, on a leash, be cautious about having them running around after dusk, night time and early morning, as well bring cats in at night. It is advised to keep kids close by, make noise when walking along paths that have bushes and low visibility as well as carry bear spray along all trails even within city limits.

If you have a

conflict with problem wildlife, call RAPP 24 hrs/7 days a week 1-877-952-7277. For more information regarding fruit gleaning email Lita at

[email protected], call 992-5743 or join and post on the Facebook Quesnel Fruit Exchange. Or to view local wildlife encounters/sightings

or to add your own visit:  https://wildsafebc.com/warp/.

Mandatory vaccinationrecords urged for schools

TOM FLETCHER Black Press

With communicable diseases such as whooping cough, mumps and measles making a comeback, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall is reminding parents to make sure their children’s vaccines are up to date as they return to school.

And Kendall has added his voice to that of the Canadian Medical Association, calling for mandatory declaration of vaccination when children enrol at school, as is done in Ontario and New Brunswick.

The CMA voted at its annual meeting in late August for other provinces to follow suit, requiring immunization

records but allowing exemptions for medical or religious reasons. Doctors also called for development of a national database to pull together records scattered between doctors’ offices and schools.

“By the time a child reaches five or six years old, he or she should have received booster shots that protect against measles, polio, chicken pox, whooping cough and more, and kids in Grade 6 and 9 should receive follow-up vaccinations,” Kendall said. “This is all part of B.C.’s free, routine immunization program.”

Kendall emphasized that vaccinations themselves would not be mandatory, but the information

would give schools the ability to protect students when an outbreak happens. That means excluding unvaccinated children from school during an outbreak, and offering parents the chance to fill gaps in their protection.

“Unvaccinated children are at risk themselves, but they also pose a risk to others because they create a gateway into the community,” Kendall told CKNW radio this week. “So we need the concept of herd immunity, where we get 95 per cent of the population of a cohort of children vaccinated, so it’s much harder for disease to spread in the community.”

Vaccine records also give public health authorities a chance to counter

misinformation that has proliferated in recent years, he said.

“If we know who the parents of those children are, we can talk with them and tell them the facts and what is real and what is not real, and hopefully convince a good proportion of them that what they’re actually fearing is either unreal or not scientifically valid, or

is in fact a misplaced fear,” Kendall said. “And we would hope that we would get some of those parents at least to get their children vaccinated.”

Parents in B.C. can now sign up for free text message reminders at immunizebc.ca/reminders, and the website also offers a smartphone app to manage immunization records.

Advances in technology can put lawmakers in serious catch-up mode,

such as the case with drones. Some cities have developed

bylaws regarding drones. And Transport Canada will

presumably provide small municipalities who can’t develop meaningful legislation on this issue with some teeth when it comes out with new regulations on unmanned aircraft next year.Another advance in technology –

the proliferation of cell phones – has proven deadly in B.C., where one quarter of traffic fatalities can be attributed to distracted driving.Ten years ago, distracted driving

meant eating or turning around to help a child in the back seat.Legislation is in place, and

enforcement campaigns frequent, in regards to distracted driving in B.C.But before drones, before cell

phones, before electricity, there was something called common sense. Most would know it’s not OK

to buzz a drone over a group of people doing yoga, The same for texting while driving.Such is the state of our world

that laws must be put in place because many humans have lost any tenuous grip they once had on common sense. It seems the speed of

technological advances in our society is only matched by the backwards slide in our ability to use our brains.

Of all the immature, ignorant whining that came out of

the recent power failure in the Lower Mainland, one example summed up the decline of our urban culture for me.

It wasn’t the people who flooded 9-1-1 with calls demanding to know when their power would be restored, or complain-ing about their freezers. It wasn’t those on Twitter insisting BC Hydro pay for food that went bad. It was another social media mo-ment.

With part of his commu-nity without electricity for a third day, Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart went to his Facebook page, which has a wide following. There he pleaded with residents to stop phoning city hall to demand that a local big-box supermarket provide milk and eggs.

Power had been restored at the store only a few hours before, in the dead of night, and it’s safe to assume that all stores were working flat out to restock perishables.

Where do people get the notion that city hall, or whatever all-powerful

nanny state they imagine, controls grocery stores? How do they conclude that in the midst of the worst electrical grid failure on record, BC Hydro is going to address their personal situation above all others?

Vancouver broadcast media weren’t much better. Their big focus was that BC Hydro’s website crashed, so people couldn’t call it up on their smartphones and find out instantly when their power would be back on.

Some even questioned why wireless power meters didn’t help. Perhaps these were the same journalists who fed the tinfoil-hat superstition about their signals.

The facts should be known by now. After an extremely dry spring and summer, a high wind shattered trees and took down more wires

and poles than BC Hydro had ever coped with before. Further damage was done within areas that were already blacked out, leaving overtaxed technicians un-able to accurately assess the full extent of it.

In Coquitlam and else-where, poles were down in areas too rain-saturated for heavy repair trucks to reach. Yes, there were some too-optimistic repair estimates given out, in response to the constant screeching for instant answers.

About 15 years ago I ex-perienced my worst power outage in the Fraser Valley. In a semi-rural area with little backup grid capacity (since greatly improved), my family went three days without power. This was in winter, due to wind and freezing rain followed by snow and cold.

Trickles of water kept pipes from freezing, and the gas stove provided a bit of heat. I heard no complaints about the crews struggling around the clock with the dangerous job of repair. Media coverage was mostly adult supervised.

Megastorm madness isn’t an isolated case. A couple of

weeks before that, a tempo-rary construction bump on the Lion’s Gate Bridge deck caused panic and rage.

Aggravated by a couple of accidents on the alternate route, and fed by hysterical media, drivers of West Van luxury cars were white-knuckled. Traffic choked the region that recently declined to pay a bit more for road improvements.

In both cases, people outside Lotus Land were muttering: Welcome to our world.

This is pertinent to the federal election. Are you competent to save for your retirement with RRSPs and a tax-free savings account, or do you need the govern-ment to do it for you, by force?

Are you capable of manag-ing your own child care, or should the nanny state create a hugely subsidized system, which has already failed in Quebec, from coast to coast?

Are you ready for the day when the machine stops?

In the dictionary, the first explanation of the word observation is “the act, habit or power of seeing and noting.”

There are a lot more descriptions, meanings and words that are related to the word observation in the dictionary, but if I used them all, I might as well print the whole page of the dictionary. So I will stick with the first explanation and that is “the power of seeing and noting.” As I get older and keep on doing so, I seem to spend more time looking for things that I have put somewhere.

For a while I was scared that this was the beginning of not knowing who I am. However, when I started to think back, I came to the conclusion that I have always been like that. When I lived in Victoria in the seventies I parked my old ford van somewhere and I forgot where. It took me two days to find the darned thing.

I have tried living in the now, several times, but in too many cases it ended with dire results. One time I was filling the sink to do the dishes and living in the now, I thought I would put some boots and shoes on the boot rack while the sink was filling, being in the present, I noted some small things that could be fixed as well.

When I got back in the kitchen, water had covered the kitchen and dining room floor and was running in the heating ducts. I tried valiantly to mop the deluge up with a mop and bucket, but when my wife came home there was still standing water on the floor and in the ducts.

The first thing she said was “why did you not use the shop vacuum?” My already broken self-esteem also went in the heating ducts. I think that living in the now is very hard, because you get stuck in the moment and forget the now. So I have come to the conclusion that the now is a moving sort of time slot that hangs between the past and the future.

Since it is impossible to live in the future I can only deal with the past and the now, but the now affects the future, so I felt like a hopeless case lost in the world of opposites and contradictions that are wrapped in baffle-gab. It became more complicated when I realized that the word hoopla is the past as soon as I uttered it.

The whole concept became so scary to me that I made a pile of dirt to move with my tooth brush from one place to another. At least that was my idea of how to stop a moment in time using monotony as a tool, but when I looked at the pile I said to hell with that. Then I thought I am just going to do what I want, so in no time there were no clean plates or pots and the pile of clothes that should be in the wash, or put away was so big I hardly could get in the bedroom.

At this point I sure would like to meet the person who wrote the song “Life is just a bowl of cherries “, because what to do with the pits is left out.

ANNIE GALLANTObserver Reporter

Emma Penner loves horses and the three weeks she spent on the Communities

for Veterans/The Ride Across Canada (CFV/TRAC) were, in her words “amazing.”

As a neighbour of Pen-y-Bryn Farm south of Quesnel, she often brought her own horse to the therapeutic riding facility and would pitch in and help around the place.

When Paul and Terry Nichols began discussions of their CFV/TRAC, Emma was part of those discussions, where they went as far to invite her to participate on a leg of the journey somewhere across the continent.

Emma was excited. The best place for her connect

with the ride was between Regina and Winnipeg where the Penners have relatives. Her rst leg of the journey was riding into Regina with Paul and seven other riders.

“It was crazy, Regina hadn’t seen rain in about three months but during our ride we had a torrential downpour,” Emma said.

“The vets had to get off their horses and walk there was so much rain.”

Over the next three weeks, Emma fell into the daily routine of life on the road with CFV/TRAC. Every Thursday she’d ride with Paul and on the other days she’d help look after horses beginning with a 5:30 a.m. rising to tend to the horses, then back to bed for a couple of hours before it was time to tack up

the horses for that day’s ride.“There was never a moment to

relax, there was always something to do,” she said.

However, she loved every minute of it.

Exercising the horses that weren’t being ridden, Emma worked closely with one horse named Pepsi.

“She taught me so much. Working with a personality like Pepsi I really learned a lot about ground and saddle work. Unfortunately, Pepsi wasn’t experienced enough and had to be sent back.”

Sleeping arrangements were sometimes pretty haphazard and moving the camp every few days became a real learning experience for Emma but she’s young and adaptable and was loving the whole adventure.

“I met so many great people including veterans,” she said.

“You gure these vets do what they do and rarely get thanked. I was riding with a vet in a small town where kids help up a big thank you sign. The vet began to cry and admitted that was the rst time he’d ever been thanked.”

All the experiences were on the road on the back of a horse.

Emma remembered spending time on a Hutterite settlement where they opened their communal arms to Paul, Terry and the entire CFV/TRAC crew.

“We also spent four nights at Keystone, a luxury farm with an amazing barn,” she said.

“There was a miniature pony show on at the time.”

One experience that had a profound effect on Emma was at another huge barn where Emma discovered a newborn batch of kittens. The next day, as they were getting ready to leave, Emma found only one kitten still alive. They decided to take the kitten with them and try and save it. At the next stop, Sage Hills, the owner, a veterinarian, helped them doctor the kitten but it unfortunately also died.

“There was a native woman who took the kitten to a stone circle and said special prayers and ceremonies to send it to it’s afterlife. I learned from the vet not only what to do when trying to save animals, but I also learned about the aboriginal culture and it’s importance.”

When asked about her favourite moment in her three weeks on the road, Emma thought for a moment and said it was a night in just another of the many small towns they stopped in.

“We were in an arena and we let the horses loose, then began doing natural horsemanship which is responding to the horses, leaping over the horses and just being in tune with them. It reminded me of being at home. We were working with the horses without ropes or tack, just our body language and natural communication.”

Now that she’s back home in Quesnel, Emma is a strong supporter of the ongoing CFV/TRAC and if possible, should they do another ride, she’d love to be there from start to nish.

LIFESTYLES

There’s a new and exciting edutainment

event planned for the Quesnel Fall Fair, Sept. 19 – 20.

In addition to all the activities traditionally enjoyed at the fair, this year there’s entertaining songs and music, cowboy poetry and demonstrated safe horse handling and horsemanship all in a fun grandstand event. Those attending can also enjoy a steak dinner for just $15 either before or after the edutainment.

Edutainment is the combination of valuable education and entertainment.

From 5 – 6:30 p.m. on Sept 19 and 3 – 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 gather in the main grandstand and learn how to work safely with your horse.

Instruction is provided by Mark Grafton, horseman, stockman and manager of the Bar K Ranch and former director for Farm and Ranch safety and Health Association

(FARSHA).“Our goal is to

help preserve and enhance the ranch cowboy and horse culture by advancing horsemanship and stockman ship skills of people working in these environments. This in turn improves safety, efficiency and job satisfaction.”

Work together with Grafton is Reg Steward, B.C. Provincial Ranching Consultant for FARSHA, superintendent of field operations for FASHA, contract cowboy and range rider.

The topics covered

by these two experts includes working safely with your horse, both ground work and from the saddle; introducing a horse to cow work; equipment; helping a young horse and many other subjects.

Also in the main grandstand will be

Gordie West, good old cowboy whose music is heard round the world.

Gordie has a thirst for the folklore of Western Canada and the old country music and he has gained worldwide recognition for his association with the Calgary Stampede, Alberta and Canada.

Cowboy festivals are his favourite events and Gordie takes

every opportunity to belt out a tune, recite a bit of cowboy poetry or yodel for an appreciative audience.

The Quesnel Fall Fair includes something for everyone, classic favourites like livestock displays, a two-day horse show, early learning expo and a few quirky events like the Lions Club Wiener Dog Races and a Donkey Days event sponsored by Bouchie Lake Country Store. For the kids there’s free bouncy castles, sponsored by TELUS.

And this all comes without any admission cost. Yes, the Quesnel Fall Fair is free.

Plan to spend time at Alex Fraser Park during the Quesnel Fall Fair for two days of free family fun.

Quesnel Film Club is opening its 2015/2016 season with the film Mommy, Sept. 10 at the Carib Theatre at 6:30 p.m.

Audacious and inspiring, Mommy is one of the best films of the year and it comes from a 25-year-old di-rector with five feature films under his belt, Xavier Dolan.

The story unfolds with Steve, a troubled teenager whose mother Diane picks him up from a government institution to care for him at home.

It’s an act of deep maternal commit-ment and a huge risk. Although he can be sweet as an angel, Steve is volatile. As Diane tries to manage her son’s mood swings at home, it’s clear she’s not exactly serene either.

When their shy neighbour Kyla takes an interest in mother and son, a sur-prising trio develops.

The same wild energy of Dolan’s earlier films is here, but channelled to greater impact. Dolan is ably assisted by cinematographer Andrew Turpin, himself a notable Quebec filmmaker and in an aesthetically shocking move, they’ve shot most of Mommy in 1:1 screen ratio – a square frame filled

with dazzling displays of colour, move-ment and fo-cus shifts that intensify the story’s emo-tion.

There’s a slight tinge of specula-tive fiction in the pilot of Mommy as Dolan invents a non-existent law to impose a frame on his story, but this is a small

gesture compared to the character insights and cascades of emotion on display.

Tickets for Mommy are $9 (regular admissions) and $7 (seniors.) Film memberships included in admission. For information call 250-747-7422 or 250-747-3979 or join the Facebook page at Quesnel Film Club or visit www.quesnelfilmclub.ca.

Dean Caban and Evan Marble of Dynamic Edge Power Skating talk to the participants on Sept. 4, as part of the Cariboo Elite Hockey Training summer camps.

Elite hockey training comes to Quesnel

RYAN GRAHAMObserver Reporter

Cariboo Elite Hockey Training held their summer hockey camps from Aug.17-Sept. 4, where young play-ers got the chance to fine tune their skills. The first camp was Aug.17-24 and focused on skill development, game tactics and conditioning. That session was instructed by former NHL players Ed Patterson and Chris Murray. The second camp was Aug.31-Sept. 4 focusing on proper skating techniques. Dean Caban and Evan Marble from Dynamic Edge Power Skating, led that camp. Shane Thon, Richard Gauthier and Matt Kolle designed the camp and wanted to stress that the camp is for everyone, not just the top players.

“Cariboo elite hockey training is not just for the elite kids or athletes that are coming to these camps,” Thon said. We are bringing elite trainers to our small com-munity to help and work with our kids.”

The three of them wanted to give Quesnel a camp like this because it was something the community desired. The groundwork for the camp started in April and was put together quickly. As evidence of the camp’s success, they are now getting calls from other instruc-tors about participating in future camps.

“We actually have other skating instructors and coaches that are contacting us and interested in book-ing a session,” Thon said.

With the camp being held in Quesnel, they believe it’s an advantage because local kids don’t have to leave town to participate.

“The main thing is that the kids are going to be able

to build on their skills right here in our own backyard,” Gauthier said. Although, the camps are completed they’ve already received confirmation from Patterson and Murray about returning. Gauthier thinks it’s an added bonus of the timing of the camps.

“That’s why these camps are key,” Gauthier said. Perfect timings for these guys to go right into their seasons and take all these skills that they’re learning, straight into their tryouts.”

Marble and Caban ran the second camp and have experience in power skating, through their time in hockey. They also bring a passion to their craft.

“It’s a great opportunity to be able to give back to the youth and work in a field I love,” Caban said.

The session on Sept. 1 focused on linear crossovers, using agility to change direction and working on side-to-side drills to get around opposing players. Although, this camp is for skating, it’s not an introduction course.

“For us it’s not really a learn to skate program,” Ca-ban said. We build on a foundation that already exists coming out of CanSkate. The ages vary from eight-year olds, junior players, to even professional players.

“This summer we had a junior pro camp consisting of 15 players on the ice, where we had NHL, AHL, Major Junior and Junior A,” Caban said. We coach all the way up to pro and help players refine their skating technique.”

The on-ice sessions are filmed, which allows them to give instant feedback.

“Seeing is believing for them,” Caban said. We see a lot of transformation and it’s a huge teaching tool for us.” Although, some techniques that are taught sound difficult, it’s picked up quickly by the students.

“We start with edge work and build on that founda-tion, until they comprehend the techniques that we’re working on,” Caban said. Once their proficient at it, then we can start to apply it in drills, introduce pucks and apply speed afterwards.” The cost for residents was $350 for one camp and two camps was $650. For non-residents the price was $650 and two was $800. The camp was sponsored by Quesnel and District Leisure Services, Sandman hotels, Fraser River GM, T.L. De-signs, Parallel Welding and Big Country Printers. More information about future camps will be available on their Facebook group, Cariboo Elite Hockey Training once dates are confirmed.

“Cariboo elite hockey training is not just for the elite kids or athletes that are coming to these camps. We are bringing elite trainers to our small

community.”Shane Thon

RYAN GRAHAMObserver Reporter

The 48th annual Barb Smith/ Marg Jefferson tournament turned out to be a huge suc-cess. The tournament, which was held at the Quesnel Golf Club from Aug. 14 – 16 was a two-ball best format.

The weekend kicked off with a meet and greet on Friday, which involved a putting con-test run by professional golf pro Kathy Good. Saturday, a banquet was held for all 68 participants with 22 locals.

Sunday the tournament really took off. A lunch with prizes given out fortified the golfers before they hit the course. The prizes included a 50/50 draw and three raffle baskets. The 50/50 draw raised $595 for Quesnel Pal-liative Care, while Cariboo Pulp and Paper contributed to the raffle baskets, which raised an astounding $805 towards Kidsport. The course had two divisions of a low gross and low net format.

The net gross is the total,

minus the players handicap, while the low gross is the total strokes of the game.

The low net division saw the team of Sharon Cleveland- Sharron Bartman, from Wil-liams Lake take top honours with a score of 126.

The team of Kelly Flaherty-Barb Vincent, took home the low gross division also from Williams Lake, beating the local team of Rickey Deis- Nancy O’Flynn by five strokes with a final score of 156.

RecipesBack to school for the kids

means back to snack making for you. By dedicating the time on a weekend to whip up a batch of these chocolate pretzel bars will mean one less thing you have to worry about during the week.

Whether you’re looking for snacks to pack in your daughter’s lunchbox, or nding the perfect remedy to ll your active son’s tummy after school, these bars are the perfect t.

Chocolate Pretzel BarsPreparation time: 10 minutesTotal time: 20 minutesServings: 18 barsIngredients• 1 1/4 cups quick oats• 1/4 cup unsalted butter• 1/4 cup creamed honey• 1/4 cup packed brown sugar• 3/4 cup puffed-rice cereal• 3/4 cup chopped pretzel sticks• 2 tbsp fl ax seeds

• 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions1. Heat a large non-stick frying

pan over medium-high. Add quick oats, stirring often, until browned, 4 to 5 minutes. Set aside.

2. Stir unsalted butter, creamed honey and packed brown sugar in a large saucepan set over medium-high. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and stir in oats, puffed-rice cereal, chopped pretzels and fl ax seeds until combined.

3. Scrape into a greased 8” x 8” baking dish. Smooth top, then sprinkle with chocolate chips. Refrigerate until fi rm, about 30 minutes. Cut into bars. Let stand at room temperature ve minutes before serving.

Keep well-refrigerated in a re-sealable plastic bag for up to one week.

These snacks make the perfect lunch companion

Give your family a jump-start on good nutrition by introducing your children to a nourishing, whole-food diet at a young age. Teaching them to prefer the taste of real foods lays the foundation for lifelong healthy eating habits. Follow these tips to ensure your child consumes high-quality, healthful ingredients.

First bites are a big milestone in a baby’s life. The Canadian Paedi-atric Society recommends starting solid food around six months. After introducing your child to single-grain, iron-fortifi ed cereal, you can experiment with different vegetable and fruit purees, tailoring each meal to your child’s preference and needs. To make your own purees, invest in a quality blender such as the Vita-mix Total Nutrition Center, which easily blends whole-food ingredients to a silky smooth texture and offers a convenient way to create hearty, nutritious meals.

There are no strict rules about introducing a fruit or vegetable rst. Some choose to introduce fruits rst because the sweet taste mirrors breast milk, while others like to start with vegetables, so the child will be more likely to accept the taste. Whichever you choose, remember to

only introduce one new food every three to four days, as this will help you determine whether your child has a reaction to a certain ingredient.

As your little one grows, continu-ing good eating habits can be tricky. Toddler years are a time of transition and independence, when they learn to eat table food and experiment with a variety of tastes and textures. Kids are also notoriously fussy dur-ing this time and may reject some of the most nutritious foods. Serving your children homemade fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies is one of the simplest and most deli-cious ways to t several servings of healthy produce into their diets. You can also blend whole meals such as cooked chicken and rice, so your toddler can eat the same foods as you. Keep in mind the spice levels so as not to upset your child’s stomach.

Making your own baby and tod-dler food offers many bene ts. It allows you to know exactly what you’re feeding your little ones, increases the nutritional value and freshness of foods, and eliminates additives—all with a lower overall cost.
