Quesnel City Council wants your input on its budget framework for 2016 through 2019, before it begins to formalize the City’s 2016 budget.

NEWS

During the federal election I

started writing an article only to change my mind.

We now have a new federal Liberal government, led by Justin Trudeau, which believe me I hope will do a good job for Canada.

Deficit financing, up to $10 billion per year for three years. Who will be responsible?

Our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. How can Quebec and Ontario manage their economies with such huge deficits?

My understanding is Quebec’s debt is $175 billion, according to the Premier of Quebec, they pay

$30 million per day – everyday before they have funds to put toward health care and education – in my mind that is not affordable.

What about Ontario’s, debt – $300 billion, yet their government plans to spend $130 billion over the next decade on pet projects

I read that Ontario has twice the debt of California is that something to be proud of? Good grief is that where we want to be?

I continue to read about opposition against pipelines, mining and other resources that support our economies, how will our infrastructure needs be paid for?

When a resource

industry faces a down turn in the economy there is a ripple effect, just look at the impact of oil prices. How many of these protesters live in houses, drive vehicles, have computers, cell phones, etc.

Regardless those products come from resources. Perhaps they don’t drive cars or live in houses,(what type of housing did our ancestors live in) never mind heat them.

As Jack Munroe used to say where does the first buck come from, where else resources.

No matter what we can’t survive without resources.

Over the years why did our natural resources become bad

for the environment? Our competitive

ability in a global economy relies on our ability to move our natural resources. We need the infrastructure to do this, rail lines, pipelines, highways, ports, etc.

Schools, hospitals, water and sewer, all infrastructures require

resources in order to be built.

I remember years ago when we were negotiating the Cariboo Chilcotin Land Use Plan, a good friend from the coast told me that Urban people were two generations removed from understanding the importance of

resources and where they come from, that was 25 years ago, so perhaps it is now three generations removed.

Instead of just protesting let’s take a moment and consider how we live, what we use and where it comes from, instead of protesting.

The future relies

on all of us to understand and work together to achieve economic stability.

Mary Glassford is a long-term Quesnel resident, former Cariboo Regional District director and city councilor and past president of the Post Secondary Education Council.

The future relies on all of us to work together

Hazel was born November 17, 1915 into a family of eight in Grandview Manitoba. She says she remembers her growing up years in that large, lively household as if they were yesterday. Being that last and final child, she admits that she was probably a bit spoiled and didn’t have to do as many farm chores as her brothers and sisters. She said it was always lots of fun.Hazel completed her schooling in Artemesia, Manitoba (yes, she unhesitatingly spelled the name of the town for us and lots of the other names in this story that we had problems with, too!), and at the age of 19, she began her nurse’s training in Neepawa Manitoba. She admits that leaving her family left her “very home-sick” a lot of the time. After training was completed, she worked at the Grandview Hospital with Dr. Shortreed. Hazel said he was “a good, kind country Doctor…he brought most of the babies into the world in that area. He always gave them a little crack on the bum to make sure they would cry.”Hazel loved to dance and would often be driven to one of the local community halls by one of her brothers. As luck would have it, on one particular evening, there was a dance at the Umatella Hall and that’s where she met her beloved Ira. They “…made a date. He didn’t have a car, he didn’t have anything…but that didn’t matter…. Luckily, one of his good friends had a car and he borrowed that….” Ira and Hazel’s date ended up by having a picnic by the river, and the rest became a 57-year-long love story. Ira passed away in November 1997, but Hazel will cherish his memory always. Reverend McMaster, the very same minister who baptized Hazel as an infant, married Ira and Hazel on November 15, 1940, in Grandview, Manitoba. Hazel tells the story that on the day of their wedding, she discovered that Ira’s shirt collar was quite tattered and, since he didn’t have another good shirt to wear, she removed the collar, turned it, re-sewed it by hand and made it once again presentable. She remembers her pretty blue wedding dress cost 10 dollars! November became a significant month: Ira’s birthday was November 10, their wedding anniversary was five days later, and Hazel’s birthday came two days after that. From Grandview they moved to Tyner Saskatchewan where they ran the General Store. It was a great way to get to know everyone. Ira also played a lot of ball so the couple became very involved with the community. In 1952, they adopted their only child, Grant. “The entire community welcomed our new baby boy…we had a great party. But we had no warning time…we’d expected about two weeks warning…we didn’t have any baby supplies. When we got him home we didn’t know where we were going to put him to sleep. We had a choice of putting Grant in a clothes basket or a dresser drawer on the first night... but, really, I kept him in my arms most of the night….” Hazel keeps this tucked in her heart as a very fond and precious memory. From Tyner, the Gardner family moved to Victoria BC and began employment at Mattick’s farm, a fruit and vegetable market. During the in-season, Hazel had to pick and bundle daffodils, “”I picked and bundled so many darned daffodils…. I sure couldn’t see anything beautiful about those things by the time we finished a season. What a job…!”In 1962, the Gardners moved to Quesnel. On the drive from Victoria, they discovered “…there was a hole in the floor boards and the

air and exhaust fumes were coming right into the car…it was so cold….” Shortly after arriving, Ira began working at the Billy Barker Hotel, and Hazel began her 19 year career at the GR Baker Hospital. Her patients loved her… in spite of her playful pranks like painting the toe nails of a sleeping and unsuspecting mayor. When one of Ira and Hazel’s friends was in hospital awaiting an enema, Hazel bounced up to his bedside with a garden hose and the biggest funnel she could find. Hazel has always believed that laughter is a great cure for most things. “Work was always lots of fun,” she told us and, as she recounts happy memories, she speaks highly of Doctors Holley, Appleby, and Simpson, and numerous other co-workers like Olly Pike, Percy, Mrs. McCall and many others. The Gardner’s homes were homes with unlocked and revolving doors. “Folks would arrive any time of the day or night - even at 2 o’clock in the morning for bacon and eggs after curling or a dance.” Some of those friends included Marg and Lloyd Gale, Harvey and Madeline Copeland, Irene and Lloyd Phoenix, Louise and Lloyd Delahey, Blanche and Fred Green, and Tom and Dorothy Cheavins. The visitors always reciprocated in the same fashion, too. This tradition of hospitality, fun, and friendship continued for decades. One such party occurred when Ira and Hazel moved to a new house at Six Mile. An unexpected housewarming brought a lot of very strange presents right into their home - there were chickens, a goat, and a very pregnant rabbit roaming around. Their friends had decided the Gardners needed a little help to fit into their new country setting – and, no, the goat wasn’t quite housebroken…and, yes, the housewarming was a good one!Hazel’s passions were her husband Ira, her son Grant, and her family and friends. Hazel and Ira remained in close contact with their brothers and sisters and families throughout their lifetimes. Once, while a crew of Ira’s family were living in tight quarters and working in the mines in Sudbury, Hazel and her niece Irene brought one of the nephews, Sheldon Prier, into the world. Sheldon was born quickly and there was no time for the trip into Sudbury. No problem, Aunty Hazel was there!Hazel also loved dancing and, on their 50th wedding anniversary, she danced the whole night in 2” spike heels: if you’re doing the math, she was 75 at the time and out-danced us all. After her 90th birthday dinner was finished, Hazel entertained her remaining guests by playing the piano while David McMaster, a 9 year old relative umpteen times removed, played along on the fiddle. There was no generation gap, just lots of good music! Card nights were a great favorite too and Hazel continued playing cards with her friends - especially Frankie Berge, Irene Phoenix and the Gale’s right up until a couple of years ago.Hazel still has the same ability to make other people chuckle that she’s had all her life. She says that, although like everyone else she’s had some sad times in her life, she wouldn’t trade her life and memories for anything else in the world. “I always felt if you could make someone else laugh and be happy, it was a satisfying thing….” And, certainly, Hazel can still make us laugh and her own infectious laugh is like a warm hug to all those around her.We all love you Hazel and we wish you a very Happy 100th Birthday on November 17th.

Happy Birthday

Hazel Gardner!

Parents, advocates for the disabled and even the opposition critic applauded the B.C. government’s move to increase financial independence for people receiving disability assistance payments.

Social Development Minister Michelle Stilwell has announced that effective Dec. 1, recipients will be able to receive financial gifts and inheritances of up to $100,000 without affecting their monthly payments. The current lifetime limit is $5,000 per person, after which assistance payments are reduced.

Stilwell said the change affects 96,000 people in B.C. who receive disability assistance.

“It’s available to all those individuals, and of course it would depend on their personal situations, their family support, friend support, whether they’re working or not working,” Stilwell said. “And those are definitely changes that we’re trying to encourage as well, to help individuals to get into the workforce, so they can create opportunities for themselves to earn and to save.”

The government previously raised the earned income exemption so people can earn up to $9,600 a year without reduction of their disability assistance, and has encouraged B.C. businesses to hire disabled people.

James Ho, a member of the minister’s council on employment and accessibility, called the gift and inheritance policy “a quantum leap forward” for disabled people like his son.

Kathy Bromley, a disability advocate whose daughter attends Simon Fraser University, struggled to control her emotions at a ceremony at the B.C. legislature announcing the change Nov. 5.

“Just because Shannon was born with a disability and needs help to brush her teeth and put her coat on … she needs to have a good reason to wake up every morning,” Bromley said.

NDP social development critic Michelle Mungall the change is “definitely good news” for those who can take advantage of it.

“I know with some of the families that I’ve been working with, people have come forward wanting to help them out, and they haven’t been able to because of the gift rule,” Mungall said.

“But at the end of the day, what we know is that the income assistance rates are very low, they are leaving people in poverty, and we see policies like the maternity leave clawback.”

As it prepares to take part in the latest United Nations conference on climate change in December, the B.C. government is changing legislation to permit development of carbon dioxide capture and storage from its northeast B.C. natural gas deposits.

Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman said the changes will give the B.C. Oil and Gas Commission authority to regulate projects that strip carbon dioxide from raw gas and inject it back into salt water formations deep underground.

“Although we’ve had a look at it over the years and have actually had projects that looked like they might go ahead at some point in time, we nd that we don’t have the overall regulatory framework to actually allow and be successful with CCS,” Coleman told the legislature as he introduced the amendments.

One of the changes

protects Oil and Gas Commission employees from being named in lawsuits related to their decisions.

In 2008, the B.C. government put in $3.4 million towards a $12 million feasibility study at Spectra Energy’s gas processing facilities at Fort Nelson, one of the largest gas plants in North America. The federal government and the U.S. Department of Energy also helped

fund the study.Initial results

showed saline aquifers more than two kilometres deep could act as permanent storage for CO2, but the project has not yet proceeded to construction, and extracted CO2 is still being vented to the atmosphere.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said CCS is a promising technology, but the gas industry in B.C. is responsible for 15 per cent of the

province’s greenhouse gas emissions, and venting of CO2 from plants and wells accounts for a quarter of that.

Huntington said the proposed development of lique ed natural gas exports means more CO2 emissions from gas extraction as well as LNG processing.

Premier Christy Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak are scheduled to join Prime Minister

Justin Trudeau and other premiers at the latest climate change summit in Paris in early December.

In his election campaign, Trudeau said he wanted Canada to take a leading role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but that the provinces should take the lead in determining how to regulate before a new national plan is developed.

It’s that time of year when some of my friends and family

start stressing out about Christmas and I’m reminded of the days when I did too. It’s been quite awhile since then.

Growing up my mother made a big deal out of every holiday whether it was Valentine’s Day, Saint Patrick’s Day or Thanksgiving.

Christmas was by far the most important and taxing of the holidays for her and she’d start preparing well in advance.

Too many presents were bought for too many people using credit cards that would take months to pay off.

She was also a hostess extraordinaire offering delicious appetizers, meals and desserts within our beautifully decorated home.

Providing all of that brought her some enjoyment, but her obsession with trying to achieve perfection took it’s toll on her energy and spirit, resulting in her feeling anxious, then joyous, then volatile and then depressed.

In later years we realized she suffered from an undiagnosed mental illness that had her wound so tight

that something as random as finding a tissue in one of our “just-for-show” trash baskets could cause her to fly off the handle.

Less manic but similar to my mother in some of her obsessive and people-pleasing ways, I also went overboard at Christmas for many years.

My list of folks to buy for was ridiculously long and I hand made a lot of the presents myself.

The pressures of shopping, crafting, mailing out cards, decorating, socializing and later having to deal with my overspending had me dreading December 25th more than looking forward to it.

I actually got to the point where I wanted to stop celebrating it all together and would have if I wasn’t married to such a Christmas fan.

Since having children

my strategy has become more lax as years pass. I no longer buy gifts for all our friends and relatives – only the children we see over the holidays.

I’ll also buy for an adult if they raised us or raised the people that raised us; if they’re hosting an event we’re attending; or if it’s a picking-names-out-of-a-hat scenario.

Gone are the days when everyone I cared about got a present. I will revisit that practice if I ever strike it rich.

Christmas cards are a thing of the past too. I never went as far as writing an annual letter, but I used to make cards and mail them out with pictures of my kids to a large list of people. I stopped doing that out of necessity one year when my computer crashed and I lost my whole contact list.

It was such a relief not having to do it I never did it again and not one person ever complained. Not to me anyway.

I’ve never been into cooking but I used to bake for the holidays until I discovered how much easier and faster it is to buy from a store.

I will only bake now if my kids are into doing it as an

activity together. Making and decorating sugar cookies or gingerbread houses can be tons of fun.

My Christmas decor is low key as well. A tree adorned with sentimental ornaments is displayed and we put out whatever festive knick knacks are in the big bin stored under the stairs.

Since minimizing my efforts I don’t dread the holidays like I used to. It certainly helps we usually travel out of town to visit our families at their houses and don’t have to do all the hard work.

Spending time with people I love is all that concerns me at Christmas now and I wish my mother was still alive so we could visit her too. Our relationship was so toxic and abusive we hardly saw each other the last 20 years before her death in 2013.

My brother and I sure miss her though, and think of her often – especially during all the holidays that she tried to make special when we were young.

The love in her heart was pure and our love for her is everlasting.

On A Brighter Note

Refreshing take

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet is a refreshing take on building

federal leadership.A scan of the cabinet line-up looks

largely like a snapshot of today’s Canada. Our population includes roughly

half men and women; we are no longer a country of First Nations, French and English but rather a diverse tapestry of people and cultures that includes these three but also so much more.In decades past, the federal

cabinet, like so many areas of North American culture, was dominated by white males, largely because that was who was in a position to run for parliament. In more recent years, women

candidates began making inroads into higher-raking positions, and with them individuals of different ethnicities who before had been sorely under-represented.Post-election, our expectations for

cabinet were primarily regionally based – prime ministers needed to assign positions to both French and English MPs, and ensure different regions were shown a little love with a seat at the table.Other than the French/English

mix, cultural considerations and gender balance were rarely discussed.Today, Trudeau has given

Canadians a cabinet that while not perfect, better represents our country today, where a good selection of talent allowed him to challenge outdated stereotypes of what constitutes “merit.”Should someone be chosen for a

particular portfolio simply because they are male, female, French, English, Inuit or Sikh? No.But given the array of educated,

skilled and experienced MPs from which to choose, Trudeau’s leadership team provides a welcome balance that more accurately reflects the nation it represents.

Editor:Open letter to mayor

and council, Ted Armstrong, northern directors.

I attended the Quesnel 2 Rivers Boxing venue at the West Park Mall on Saturday evening, Nov. 7th along with a full house of supporters to watch young Quesnel athletes coached by Wally Doern against opponents from as far away as New Westminster.

It was a packed house enjoying young people polishing their skills in a sport that they love.

The coach, Wally, has

been a proud supporter of the Quesnel community for decades working with youth, who are often troubled teens.

Instead of these kids being on the front page as youth offenders they are now in the sports section representing Quesnel, some as you may know have competed in the Golden Glove events in B.C as well as the Canadian Nationals.

The coach has not only been awarded the Community Booster Award and has been nominated for the Quesnel Citizen of the

Year Award he has been recognized provincially with the Harold Mann Award for his commitment to the B.C Boxing Community and his work with youth.

He is also an inductee in the B.C. Amateur Sports Hall of Fame and has been named Coach of the Year and the 2 Rivers Boxing Club has been named Club of the Year.

In March the B.C. Golden Glove venue will be held and Wally has a good chance of hosting this event in Quesnel.

It is a two day event that will draw competitors,

families, and supporters from all over British Columbia who will be staying in our hotels, dining in our restaurants, filling their vehicles with fuel and shopping locally.

The club is a proud supporter of our community yet it has been bumped from the Senior Center, Bouchie Lake Hall and is now housed in the West Park Mall in an unused former vacant furniture store, which is far too small for the number of boxing supporters in Quesnel.

After all amateur

boxing is an Olympic sport.

My question to mayor and council and director of the CRD:

Since this club is for youth in our community who otherwise may have had little self-esteem and respect for anything and now have goals and respect, as well as improved physical condition, school attendance, grades and something to do rather than hanging around on the streets or playing video games.

Can the mayor and council and the CRD

directors support this club in securing an appropriate venue for upcoming events and providing a home for these young athletes that they can be proud of?

Suggestions may include: The Quesnel Senior Center, the Indoor Soccer Facility, the Rec Center, QJS Gymnasium, CSS Gymnasium, Maple Drive Gymnasium or the New Hockey Arena when completed.

LIFESTYLES

Edith was born Aug. 26, 1914 in May eld, England, to Ernest and Kate Lin eld. Her brothers Bill and George were also born in England.

Her broth-er Frank was born after the family immigrated to Canada when Edith was 16 years old.

They landed in Quebec and

made their way to Petiticodiac, N.B. via train. They settled on the Old Post Road to farm and grew vegetables for sale to keep food on the table.

Edith worked at various house clean-ing jobs and eventually got a job at the Petiticodiac Hotel. One day she went to get a haircut and the barber asked if she had bangs. Edith said no because she thought he meant bugs. She later found out that bangs in Canada were the same as a fringe in England.

In Canada Edith was introduced to baked beans, Christmas trees, and sock knitting. In 1932 Edith married Joe Alward, a blacksmith and jack of all trades. This was tough times, the height of the dirty 30’s, the war years of the 40’s and the struggle to succeed in the 50’s. Work and food were scarce but

kids were plentiful Edith recalls. Their family consisted of Ermie, Bud, Jim, George, Ruth, Ella, Sharon, Bob and Dougie. There were many times Edith went without to make sure the kids had food even if it was only biscuits and molasses.

Every time a baby was born Edith and Joe moved on. They lived in Havelock, Salisbury, Alexanderina, Notre Dame, Chipman, Pe-nobsquis, and Sussex all in New Brunswick. In the early 50’s in Sussex Edith got a job as a dish-washer and waitress at Mannings Restaurant at Sussex Corner. It was a four mile walk but that was the only way to get there. Following the res-taurant job Edith found work as a house cleaner for different people.

In 1958 the Alward family built a small bungalow in Penobsquis, N.B. By this time son Ernie was in the airforce, son Bud was in the navy. Her son Jim was working out but still living at home. The youngest son Dougie was four years old. Edith was also raising her brother George’s two children as his wife had passed away.

Edith continued to do house cleaning

for other people. Joe went from black smith-ing and into the wood cutting business. The pay wasn’t much back then. Edith earned 50 cents and hour which was used for groceries to feed the family of 11. Macaroni and tomatoes were eaten a lot. Bread was 14 cents a loaf, milk 84 cents a gallon, bacon 50 cents a pound.

Eventually the kids all got schooling, married, and moved away. In 1972 Joe passed away of a heart attack. Edith took over the care of her mother until her

passing in 1976.In 1977 Edith moved to Penobsquis,

N.B. and lived with Sharon and Ray-mond until 1986 when they moved to B.C. Edith then lived with her brother George until 1996 when George moved to Nova Scotia to be near his son Jerry. Edith then moved to B.C. in 1996 to live with Sharon and Raymond Brantnall where she continues to live.

In 1962 Edith lost her father, Ernest; in 1976 her mother Kate; her husband Joe in 1972, son Jimmy in 1978, broth-ers Bill in 1993, Frank in 1999, George in 2002, and daughter Ruthie in 2014.

There has been a lot of sadness in Edith’s life but a lot of happiness as well.

Her accomplishments are many but best of all are her children and what they have achieved: Ernie an airforce engineer with private pilot license; Bud a master warrant of cer in the Canadian Navy; Jimmy a mechanic for N.B. High-way Dept. and kept some of the N.B. ferries running; George is a carpenter and painter in Sussex; Ruth was a wait-ress and worked for Canada Post; Ella worked in retail and Canada Post; Sha-ron was a hog farmer and now grows potatoes in the Cariboo; Bobby was a safety personel manager at Canada Packers and is now a security guard for the Sussex Health Centre; Dougie was a lab technician for Baxters Ice Cream and is now retired from Point Lepreau Nuclear Plant in St. John, N.B.

From these children Edith has 26 grandchildren with successful careers from RCMP, truck drivers, Can. Gov’t employee, automobile salesman, nurse, paramedic, hairstylist, and an accoun-tant at West Fraser. Edith has 38 great grand children and eight great great grand children.

Tucked away with so many memories and photos are congratulations from the Queen, Governor General, B.C.’s Lt. Governor, B.C. Premier and retired MP for Cariboo Dick Harris for her 100th birthday last year.

print newly submitted material.

LifestyLes

Over the next few weeks allow me to take you on a tour of Quesnel and share with you what I see each day and where I see God in it.

Quesnel is still proudly known to many as the “Gold Pan City.” During the late 1800’s Quesnel was the commercial centre of the Cariboo Gold Rush. We have constant reminders of this history in town, from the large gold pan at the north entrance to the fame of Barkerville and of course the annual Billy Barker Days festival. While the gold rush is long since over, it’s not uncommon to hear of locals going down to the river or connecting tributaries on weekends to pan for gold – and some even come back with some! Perhaps you have been one of the lucky ones to return from the Cottonwood with a small stash of golden loot!

It’s hard to ignore the huge draw that gold has on the human race. Its allure captured the attention of the

Spaniards in Mexico and drew other Europeans to North America in search of its riches. Royalty fashioned crowns made of it.

Empires were built upon it. However, the Bible speaks of something that is even more valuable than the purest gold:

Psalm 19:9b-10a says “The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;”

While there are many things in our lives vying for our attention and claiming highest priority today, may we remember that it is God

and His decrees that are more valuable than anything else on Earth we could ever possess. Oh that we would search for God with as much vigor as those in the gold rush sought out those nug-gets. Oh that we would value God’s presence and guidance as much as we do our golden jewellery and earthly riches. Are you feeling poor in spirit today? Perhaps you need to reach out to God, who is able to fill you with all the hope and peace you need to feel rich and satisfied today.

Let’s pray: God, we ac-knowledge that sometimes we get caught up in our own “Gold Rushes” as we strive for treasures that are of this world. Help us to remember that it is you who are more precious than silver and more costly than gold. May we desire you above any-thing else, today and always. Amen.

RYAN GRAHAMObserver Reporter

Boxing fans were enter-tained this past weekend with Rumble 19 that was hosted by 2 Rivers Boxing Club.

It was a sold out crowd with a total of 10 matches on the night, including two sparing sessions. 2 Rivers Boxing Club had six par-ticipants in the Rumble with Rumour McGregor, Trey Lightening, Emmet Emblau, Charlie Clayton, Olin Lee and Evan Peever competing in the main event. Lightning competed in both sparing contests against teammates Emblau and McGregor.

The first match saw Jason Thompson of Prince George go up against Sabri Omen Foruk of New Westminster. That match saw Foruk deliv-er a decisive blow knocking out Thompson to claim the win.

Clayton took to the ring in the second bout, as he faced off against Ryan Fugnski, which saw Clayton come out on top.

Coming into the fight he was looking on improving from his previous fight Sept. 19 in Edmonton, which he lost.

Head coach, Wally Do-ern was impressed on the changes he made in his game plan.

“Charlie boxed smarter,” Doern said.

“When we were in Edmon-ton Charlie was trying to be very aggressive and was throwing a lot of unneces-sary punches. This time Charlie picked his shots very smartly and made almost every punch he threw count for a point. That’s what we’ve been wanting him to do and it certainly went that way tonight.”

The third match saw Alosandro Singson of Surrey go up against Brent Barrie of Prince George in a fight that went the distance with Barrie earning the victory. It was a unanimous win for Barrie who landed big shots to earn the victory.

The fourth, fifth and seventh bouts saw exhibition matches with all boxers receiving med-als.

The first contest saw Matt Ruff and Randell Graham both of Prince George compete with a solid bout that went the distance. Kenny Lally a

six-time Canadian Champion and Olympic prospect went up against Saqa 7 in the second match with both boxers landing good shots. The final exhibition bout saw Quesnel’s Lee fight Josh Donato of New Westmin-ster with Lee coming out with the win.

He landed big shots in the first round staggering his opponent. The match ended with a furry of activity with boxers going

punch for punch until the bell was rung. Doern was impressed how Lee performed.

“It was great,” Doern said.“Even though he’s only 15 and

the other fellow is in his early 20’s Olin had quite an experi-ence edge.”

The eighth match saw Na-than Rodger go up against Josh Slager earning the victory with a knockout blow 23 seconds into the second round.

The main event saw Peever face off against Anon Vaich of Prince George with Vaich the unanimous winner.

Both boxers came out landing big shots in a back- to -back contest with neither boxer giv-ing any ground. Vaich finally got the advantage in the bout to take the win. Doern was proud how Peever performed, but would like to see some adjust-ments made.

“I’d like to see him mix his punches more,” Doern said.

“From coming to the body and going up to the head, but he did the very best he could. The other fellow won, but Evan was close behind.”

Doern was impressed with how the Rumble went.

“I was really satisfied with it,” Doern said.

“The fans were just great and there was lots of them.”

It was a great turnout for the 7th Ice Breaker bonspiel at the Quesnel Curling Centre this past weekend Nov. 7 – 8. The tournament saw a total of 15 teams that were divided into three brackets with the win-ner claiming the group. The participants had no knowledge of which team they would be placed in, as they had their names picked through a draw. The purpose of the tournament

was to get people introduced to the game of curling and to have fun. All of the games were eight ends with ties going into an extra end.

There was a banquet Saturday night, where they had a ca-tered dinner, door prizes, 50/50 draw and a raffle entertainment basket. The club’s next bonspiel will be Nov. 27 – 29 with the 36th Grey Cup bonspiel, which will feature $9,000 in cash prizes and a banquet. More informa-tion is available at www.quesnel-curling.com.
