Dr. Vorano, the Queen’s National Scholar in Indigenous Art and Visual Culture, was conducting historical research with Inuit elders when a woman commented on the loss of cultural traditions as a result of the changes that happened during the 20th century, particularly from residential schools, the missionaries, and the waves of southerners who flooded into the Arctic. When Dr. Vorano stepped outside, the white sky was indistinguishable from the ground. He walked past a crucifix erected behind the Catholic church, on a hill overlooking the community. A raven flew down, perched on the crucifix, and began vocalizing. For Western culture, the raven is a harbinger of death. For Inuit culture, tulugak – raven – is a tricky fellow that symbolizes creation. Queen’s University has ap-pointed Barbara Crow as dean ofthe Faculty of Arts and Science fora five-year term effective July 1.

“I am very pleased that Dr.Crow has accepted my invitationto lead Queen’s Faculty of Artsand Science,” says Daniel Woolf,Principal and Vice-Chancellor.“Dr. Crow is an accomplishedmultidisciplinary researcher withimpressive leadership experience,and I am confident that ourlargest faculty will be well servedby her ability to listen and de-velop a shared vision.”

Encompassing a wide spec-trum of interests and expertise,the Faculty of Arts and Science isintegral to the university’s missionto offer a research-intensive envi-ronment coupled with a dynamicstudent learning experience.

“We were very impressed withDr. Crow’s leadership in innova-tive teaching and research, and byher commitment to equity, diver-sity, and inclusion,” says Benoit-Antoine Bacon, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic). “Her trackrecord in these areas is excep-tional and I look forward to work-ing with her towards the furthersuccess of the faculty and the uni-versity.”

Dr. Crow has previously held anumber of administrative posi-tions at York University and cur-rently serves as dean and associ-ate vice-president, GraduateStudies.

In her present role, Dr. Crowhas worked to advance York’s Fac-ulty of Graduate Studies bystrengthening student supportservices and administrative coor-

dination; expanding graduate pro-gramming; and increasing thenumber of student grants, fellow-ships, and awards. She is a formerchair of the Ontario Council ofGraduate Studies and used thisposition to lobby the provincialgovernment to increase fundingfor international and Aboriginalstudents.

Dr. Crow completed her PhD atYork and her first academic ap-pointment was at the Universityof Calgary. A feminist scholar, hermultidisciplinary research inter-ests focus on the social, cultural,political, and economic implica-tions of digital technologies. She iscurrently a co-principal investiga-tor on the ACT project (Ageing,Communication, and Technolo-gies), funded by a SSHRC Partner-ship Grant.

“I’d like to thank all membersof the Principal’s Advisory Com-mittee for their work and soundadvice during the selectionprocess, and I also extend greatthanks to Gordon Smith for hiscontinued leadership as interimdean until July 2017,” says Dr. Ba-con.

Committee to examine racism, diversity, inclusionBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

In an effort to initiate a broad,meaningful, and sustained con-versation on racism, diversity,and inclusion at Queen’s, Princi-pal Daniel Woolf will establish asmall group comprised of faculty,students, and staff that will betasked with expeditiously re-viewing past reports on these is-sues and making short- and long-term recommendations forchange. The Principal’s Imple-mentation Committee on Racism,Diversity, and Inclusion will be-gin its work early in the newyear.

“The feedback we’ve receivedfrom faculty, staff, students, andour governing bodies is that this

committee should not be yet an-other group to examine these is-sues at Queen’s,” says PrincipalWoolf. “I’ve heard those con-cerns, and understand them.What is needed is an implemen-tation team that will workquickly to identify past recom-mendations that have not yetbeen adopted, determine whythey have not, and identify theway forward.”

The six-member committeewill be comprised of two faculty,two staff members, and two stu-dents. The Senate will selectthree members, one from eachgroup, who need not be membersof Senate. The principal will ap-point the remaining members, af-ter Senate’s selections are final-

ized, keeping in mind the diver-sity of the group as whole.

Members of the university’ssenior administration will be ap-pointed by the principal as ex-of-ficio non-voting members to per-mit immediate feedback onquestions, suggestions, and rec-ommendations to streamline thework of the committee.

In addition, given the need toensure access by the committeeand the principal to specializedresources, the principal will ap-point a reference group, withspecific expertise, to which ques-tions or suggestions of the com-mittee with financial, legal, struc-tural, or other implications maybe referred for immediate feed-back. The reference group will be

formed after the committee hasmet for the first time.

The committee will submit tothe principal, no later thanMarch 31, 2017, a final list of ac-tions to be implemented thatidentifies priorities, suggestedtimelines, and measures to evaluate the success of implementa-tion.

NOTE: At press time, the Sen-ate election for committee mem-bers had just closed. An an-nouncement regarding thecommittee’s membership is ex-pected the week of Jan. 9.

Stephanie Deutsch, the wife of former Queen’s principal John Deutsch, celebrated her 100th birthday with friends andfamily, including five of her great-grandchildren, on Monday, Jan. 2. The event was organized by the Queen’s Women’sAssociation, of which Ms. Deutsch is the honorary president.

When you first meet StephanieDeutsch, the wife of formerQueen’s principal John Deutsch, itis hard to believe that she is now100 years old.

She lives on her own and getsaround her house quite capably,while music plays from her radio.On Saturdays it’s opera.

Known throughout her life forher feistiness and intelligence,these remain her hallmarks.

On Monday, Jan. 2, the Queen’sWomen’s Association, of whichshe is an honorary president,hosted a 100th birthday party,with friends and family gatheringat the University Club.

Several speeches were deliv-ered in her honour and Steph – asshe prefers to be called – toastedthe Queen, while three of hergreat-grandchildren put on a dis-play of Irish dance to her delight.

Steph’s granddaughter, Mari-anne McLeish, says it isn’t a greatsurprise to the family that hergrandmother reached the centurymark. Steph has always been a de-termined woman, she points out,doing things her own way, such asswimming every day when otherscouldn’t even imagine it.

An indomitable spirit, Stephkeeps herself busy, even today.

“That’s what has kept her alive.Every day she’s got somethingplanned for herself, somethingnew to learn,” Ms. McLeish says.“Getting here today is like ‘Youdid it grandma. You made it toyour 100th birthday.’ We all hoped

and prayed that she would butdeep down I think we all knewthat she would because she saidshe would.”

In speaking with Steph, she willoften tell stories of her father JohnJ. Heagarty, and her husband, bothof whom she loved immensely.

Her father, she will tell you,joined the Department of Healthin 1919 and would later become di-rector of public-health services.

In her he instilled a dedicationto learning and at the age of 15Steph would go to McGill Univer-sity – one of only two women inher program – and would earn aBachelor of Commerce degree.

After graduating she joined theBank of Canada and that is whereshe met her future husband.

The couple first arrived inKingston in 1959 when JohnDeutsch was appointed Vice-Prin-

cipal of Administration and a pro-fessor of economics. After a shortdeparture he would return toQueen’s to become the university’s14th principal in 1968, remainingin the position until 1974.

It was a busy time, Steph re-calls, living on Summerhill whereshe would regularly host dinnersfor special guests, doing much ofthe cooking herself.

Shortly after retiring, PrincipalDeutsch would fall ill and died in1976. However, Kingston washome and she would remainclosely connected to Queen’s.

“The QWA has cherishedStephanie’s participation in somany activities,” says Liz Grif-fiths, co-second vice president andevent planner. “On a personalnote, I have always enjoyed herkeen sense of humour and joie devivre.”

When Queen’s cardiologistChris Simpson’s term as pastpresident of the Canadian Med-ical Association (CMA) came toan end last year, he looked fornew opportunities to continueplaying a leadership role in guid-ing the medical profession inCanada.

Beginning in 2017, he will havethe opportunityto do so as theCMA’s repre-sentative to theWorld MedicalAssociation –an internationalconfederationof 112 nationalmedical associ-ations, repre-senting 10 mil-lion physiciansaround the globe.

“I was pretty delighted to beelected by the CMA board toserve in this new role,” says Dr.Simpson. “In my previous role(as CMA president) the issueswere predominantly Canadianand nationally-based, but Canadahas a lot to offer the world interms of our science, our excel-lence in medical education andtraining, and our work on profes-sionalism. In a number of the is-sues we’ve been grappling with –from medical aid in dying tomedical marijuana – Canada hasbeen very progressive. It’s an op-portunity to share that with theworld and one I’m looking for-ward to.”

As the CMA representative,Dr. Simpson will represent thevoice of Canada’s physicians intackling many of the pressingmedical issues facing the globalcommunity.

He explains that he is mostlooking forward to getting in-volved in issues around refugeehealth and supporting physiciansworking in war zones. The associ-ation is also heavily invested inthe social determinants of health -including poverty reduction, ac-cess to clean drinking water, foodsecurity and early childhood edu-cation.

“The association presents aunique opportunity for all of or-ganized medicine – at least inthose 112 countries – to come to-

gether to see how they can be bet-ter than the sum of their parts”Dr. Simpson explains. “There’s areal sense of responsibility for themore technologically and eco-nomically developed nations –such as Canada, the UK, Ger-many, Japan, the US and others –to share their expertise withcountries that don’t have that sortof infrastructure and help de-velop medical education to ahigher standard around theglobe.”

Dr. Simpson will serve the firsttwo years of his term in an ob-server role alongside current rep-resentative Louis Francescutti(University of Alberta).

This transitory period, similarto the dual roles of president andpast president in the CMA, allowfor the incoming member to getacquainted with the role whilemaintaining continuity.

From 2019-2021, he will fullytake over the representative roleat WMA meetings around theglobe.

“Dr. Simpson is a highly re-spected and skilled physicianwho has shown tremendous lead-ership as a voice for the medicalprofession in Canada,” saysRichard Reznick, Dean of HealthSciences and Director of theSchool of Medicine. “I wish himmy most sincere congratulationson this appointment and trustthat he will serve as a strong ad-vocate for Canadian physicians tothe global medical community.”

Founded in Paris on Sept. 17,1947, the World Medical Associa-tion was created to ensure the in-dependence of physicians. Itsmission is to serve humanity byendeavoring to achieve the high-est international standards inmedical education, medical sci-ence, medical art and medicalethics, and health care for all peo-ple in the world.

Heather Poechman (Artsci’17)got the idea for the Queen’s Win-ter Coat Exchange after she cameback from an exchange in Mo-rocco and began working as apeer adviser in the InternationalPrograms Office. The extremes ofCanadian weather often came upin conversations with other stu-dents, both domestic and interna-tional, and she realized that therewas a need among students for af-fordable or free winter gear.

“For international students, it’salready a big expense to come andstudy in Canada. To add hun-dreds of dollars of winter gear totheir budgets is a big burden,”says Ms. Poechman. “Sometimes,students will say they ‘have lots ofsweaters,’ or they’ll ‘tough it out,’instead of buying a coat. Thatsparked the idea of starting theWinter Coat Exchange.”

Now in its first year, the ex-change offers coats, hats, mittens,and scarves – anything washable –to all students, both domestic andinternational, for free. Ms. Poech-man is collecting donations for theprogram – lightly used wintercoats and accessories in good con-dition – from individuals andbusinesses. She has already re-ceived a donation of a new coatfrom Kingston clothing storeCloth.

“The response has been reallygreat so far, and I’m hoping thatas the really cold weather sets in

over the next month or so, we willreceive more donations,” she says.

“The idea is that students canhave the gear until it’s no longerneeded. Exchange students mayonly need a coat for four months,but others may need it for fouryears. Either way, we simply askthem to return it when they don’tneed it anymore.”

The Winter Coat Exchange op-erates out of the Queen’s Room ofRequirement, Room 238, in theJohn Deutsch University Centre(JDUC). All donations can bedropped off at the Room of Re-quirement (open Monday-Friday,8 am-midnight) and studentslooking for gear can drop by any-time during those hours. Ms.Poechman is also happy to collectdonations from units or individu-als across campus. Contact her viaemail [email protected].

Severe Allergy Policy in placeBY COMMUNICATIONS STAFF

Following approval from theVice-Principals’ Operations Com-mittee, the university’s Severe Al-lergy Policy is now in place. Thepolicy aims to ensure continuousimprovement to services and re-sources for students on campuswith severe allergies.

The development of a univer-sity-wide policy was recom-mended by the Severe Allergy Review Committee in May.

“The development of this pol-icy included consultation withseveral groups, including studenton campus, local medical profes-sionals, parents of current andprospective students, and allergyexperts,” says Ann Tierney, Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Af-fairs and chair of the review com-mittee. “The policy is one ofseveral recommendations thathave been implemented to sup-port the health and wellness ofstudents with severe allergies.”

The university is committed toproviding students the informa-tion and support they need to as-sist them with the management oftheir allergy, and increasing thecampus community’s awarenessof the existence of severe allergiesand how to support students withsevere allergies to reduce the like-lihood of a reaction. In addition tothe policy, the university has im-plemented several recommenda-tions, including:

• An “Ask Us Before You Eat”sign campaign in dining halls andretail locations.

• A webpage consolidating allallergy-related information forease of access.

• Making epinephrine avail-able on campus through emer-gency responders – Campus Secu-rity and Emergency Services andQueen’s First Aid.

The university will continue toimplement the recommendationsoutlined in the report, and willformally review the policy in 2019.

Often, much of the research be-ing done at Queen’s University isonly seen by those involved in theproject or who belong to the samedepartment.

To help highlight some of theamazing work being done atQueen’s the Office of the Vice-Principal (Research) held the sec-ond annual Art of Research photocontest, calling on faculty, staffand students to showcase their re-search, scholarly and artistic workthrough photography.

Dozens of images were re-ceived highlighting research fromart history and biology to physicsand drama, and locations from theArtic and the Andes Mountains toa retired woman’s home inKingston.

“Once again we receivedtremendous support from re-searchers across disciplines whoshared stimulating, provocative,and poignant images of theirwork” says Melinda Knox, Associ-ate Director, Research Profile andInitiatives. “The winning submis-sions illustrate that research is notjust about output: it is also anartistic and creative endeavor.”

Competency Based Medical Education: Change for us, by usThe following piece was written by

Dr. Jena Hall, PGY 2/CIP Obstetricsand Gynecology, on behalf of theCBME Resident Subcommittee.

For some time, there has been abuzz around Competency BasedMedical Education (CBME) atQueen’s – that it’s coming soon, itmeans more assessment, and po-tentially shorter residencies? …Let’s look at the facts.

CBME will be implementedacross Canada by 2021 on slightlydiffering schedules depending onspecialties. The Royal College(RC) granted Queen’s a ‘fast track’implementation (i.e. all of our pro-grams are implementing CBME atthe same time). On July 1, 2017, allincoming Queen’s residents willbegin their residencies in CBMEcurricula. Although currentQueen’s residents will remain instandard curricular models, wecan contribute to CBME relatedchanges and take advantage ofimproved assessment practices asthey roll out.

CBME does not mean residen-cies will be shorter, as the RC ver-sion of CBME is a hybrid modelusing competency and time. How-ever, residents who excel in CBMEmodels may have opportunity topursue more electives. Alterna-tively, residents requiring moretime in one area will be identifiedearlier and enhanced learningplans will be tailored to meet theirlearning needs, with the goal ofavoiding formal remediation.

So why can we not just change

the way we assess residents with-out such an overhaul? The reasonis, CBME is more than just betterassessment. CBME is an entireparadigm shift to rethink the waywe teach and learn modern medi-cine. It moves the focus of resi-dency curricula away from shortterm, rotation based objectivesand towards long term residencyoutcomes. This reform stems froma societal need for increased ac-countability and quality improve-ment in medicine; a need to re-design residency training to meetthe standards of modern healthcare systems.

For residents, incoming andcurrent, there are a number ofperks that come with CBME. First,clinical rotations and formalteaching sessions (academic halfday, grand rounds, etc.) will haveclear and specific objectives, withactionable steps for improvementin performance along a contin-uum towards achieving the ‘com-petent’ or ‘entrustable’ level. Youmay be asking, “What is wrongwith the objectives we have now?”Nothing… except that they are of-ten vague, reflect only the highestlevel of performance, and provideno information about how to im-prove.

For example, performance of acaesarean section may be a proce-dural objective for both a juniorand senior obstetrics (OB) rota-tion. A junior OB resident will notperform a C-section at the sameperformance level as a senior resi-dent. They will likely need more

support and only do certain por-tions of that procedure. Does thismean that the junior resident‘fails’ to achieve that objective? Or,does it mean that they are success-fully performing the activity fortheir level of development, but‘not yet achieving’ competence?CBME helps make that transitionfrom ‘failure’ to ‘not yet achieved’while providing specific descrip-tions of observable behaviours ateach performance level. These de-scriptions provide concrete step-ping-stones for residents to strivetowards.

Second, with increased directobservation, comes more specificand timely feedback. How oftenhas resident feedback read, “noconcerns,” “read more,” or “solidresident”? It is not easy to givespecific, helpful feedback, particu-larly since most physicians get lit-tle, if any, training in how to doso. Those qualitative performancestepping-stones I described abovewill also help here. They will pro-vide supervising physicians withbetter descriptions of performanceat different levels, and help cuemore specific feedback.

With all of this said, there willbe challenges that come with thischange. As assessment practiceschange, adjustments will be re-quired. As training objectiveschange, rotations will require mod-ification, and the results of all ofthis are yet unknown. It will taketime to adjust to this paradigmshift involving more direct obser-vation, more frequent and specific

assessment, and learning driven byresidents and faculty together. Thiswill all take time, calculated trials,and open-mindedness. But, whileit is new in practice, CBME is sup-ported by substantial literaturegrounded in educational theory,unlike our current model for resi-dency education.

I am excited to be a residententering this era of educational re-form. I am also realistically awarethat with change come many chal-lenges, which residents, faculty,

and administrators will have towork together to overcome. Theaccelerated CBME integration atQueen’s means that we, as resi-dents, now more than ever, havean incredible opportunity to be in-volved in the improvement ofCanadian and international resi-dency education. This is changefor us, by us.

A brilliant composer and a versatile musicianAlfred Fisher arrived at

Queen’s University as the Direc-tor of the School of Music in July1992, a position he held for fiveyears.

He remained at the universityuntil his retirement in 2009.

A writer, poet, and professor,as well as a brilliant composerand pianist whose music hasbeen performed and broadcastaround the world, Dr. Fisher diedDec. 14 at Kingston General Hos-pital. He was 74.

Born in Boston, he received hisBachelors in Music from BostonUniversity 1968, before earninghis master’s (1967) and doctoratedegrees (1976) from MichiganState University. He also taughtmusic at Michigan State (1965-68)

before moving to Canada.He continued to teach music at

the University of Western Ontario(1969-72), the University ofSaskatchewan (1972-73), and Aca-dia University (1973-78).

Dr. Fisher moved to the Uni-

versity of Alberta in 1978 to be-come chairman of the theory andcomposition division, and wouldhold a number of other positionsat that institution until he headedback east to Queen’s.

Dr. Fisher was an incrediblyversatile musician and academicwho excelled as a composer, pi-anist, music theorist and writeron a wide range of subjects. AnAssociate Composer of the Cana-dian Music Centre, his composi-tions include a number of signifi-cant works scored for a variety ofinstrumental and vocal ensem-bles with a strong emphasis onmusic for voice and piano andpieces for solo piano.

His five years at the helm ofMusic at Queen’s were marked by

very successful fundraising ef-forts often involving the creationof student scholarships and bur-saries.

Dr. Fisher always enjoyed histime in the classroom and was es-pecially inspirational when work-ing individually with studentsundertaking advanced composi-tion or independent studies.Many past students count theirtime with him as being truly en-riching and even life changing.

To mark his retirement fromQueen’s as an Emeritus Professorin 2009, the School of Music pre-sented a two-day symposium inhis honour entitled “The Avant-Garde and the Future of Art Mu-sic.” The rather open-ended topicof this conference emphasized the

progressive and philosophical ap-proach that he applied to much ofhis own creative and academicactivities.

Away from the university, Dr.Fisher was an ardent lover of na-ture and the Canadian north aswell as an avid fisherman, hiker,and adventurer. In recognition ofhis dedicated service and leader-ship, the faculty and staff of theSchool of Music presented Dr.Fisher with a specially commis-sioned, hand-crafted paddle.

Dr. Fisher is survived by hiswife Valerie and son Benjaminand daughter Laura.

Verna Clancy has always beendrawn to art. She had evenwanted to study the subject at uni-versity but never had the opportu-nity.

However, thanks to a collabo-ration between Queen’s School ofRehabilitation Therapy and Si-enna Senior Living, Ms. Clancywas able to experience for herselfwhat it’s like to study at the uni-versity.

Arriving at Etherington Hall at9:30 am, Ms. Clancy first attendeda lecture by Dr. Una D’Elia (ArtHistory) ‘The Renaissance in Italy:The Rebirth of Classical Antiq-uity,’ part of an introductorycourse on Art in the West. Contin-uing the experience, she hadlunch at The Grad Club and com-pleted her day with a guided tourof the Agnes Etherington Art Cen-tre.

It was an unforgettable day,Ms. Clancy says, and was cappedoff with a personalized certificate

of recognition from the School ofRehabilitation Therapy to com-memorate her visit to campus.

“I think everybody should have(such an experience) at least oncein their lifetime. I’ve learned somuch today. Everybody’s been sokind and welcoming and I reallyappreciate everything everyonehas done for me,” says Ms. Clancy,still excited by what she hadlearned in the art history lecture.“I didn’t realize what it covers. Ididn’t realize it covers politics,wars and every topic going. It’s notjust about studying an artist. It’salso the time, the culture.”

Ms. Clancy says she was ableto connect with the lecture on apersonal level as she has traveledto Italy and viewed some of thepaintings in person.

Through its signature DreamsProgram, Sienna Senior Living,which operates three retirementhomes and a long-term care facil-ity in Kingston, aims to fulfill thelife-long dreams of its residents.

In Ms. Clancy’s case Queen’swas also able to make her dreamcome true.

As examination administratorDeborah Smith oversees thescheduling and organizing of ex-ams sessions. To understand thescope of this responsibility, con-sider this: About 17,453 studentswill write 60,899 between Dec. 7and Dec. 20 and administersnearly 5,000 individualized examaccommodations for studentswith special needs. She regularlyreviews and makes improvementto the examination administratioprocess, including creating witty,fun and effective proctor trainingsessions. Deborah cares deeplyabout her work and the impactshe has on the lives of students.

As a 17-year member of Stu-dent Awards, Angie is reveredamong her colleagues as the sub-ject-matter expert on OSAP andchief navigator of its complexmaze of policies and procedures,rules and regulations. She isknown for her thoughtfulness ancaring, especially in the case ofstudents whose situations do notexactly “fit” the OSAP mould. IfOSAP options appear to be lim-ited, she will thoroughly porethrough all the policy manualsand will not stop until all avenueare exhausted. Angie will thendraw upon her extensive knowl-edge of Queen’s financial aid programs to present additional op-portunities to students.

For exchange students arrivingat Queen’s for the winter term, it’sthe beginning of a new learningexperience.

On Thursday, Jan. 5, an orienta-tion session was hosted by theQueen’s University InternationalCentre (QUIC) for exchange stu-dents from the Faculty of Arts andScience to provide some basic in-formation about life at Queen’sand in Kingston, such as the re-sources that are available from themany campus partners.

In a Queen’s tradition, the stu-dents also received tricolourscarves and mittens donated bythe Campus Bookstore as theyface the Canadian winter.

Ella Jansen has returned toCanada from the Netherlands af-ter visiting Vancouver and Cal-gary two years ago, and fell inlove with the natural beauty. Shewas drawn to Queen’s by thebroad range of courses available.

She’s looking to explore anddiscover more about Canadathrough the exchange.

“At University College UtrechtI am already in an international

environment but there are a lot ofEuropeans there and a lot ofDutch people,” she says. “I feellike we don’t have a lot of Canadi-ans there, or North Americans, soI would like to explore these cul-tures and get more stories fromthese students, so an even moreinternational view.”

Kim Yeung arrives from Aus-tralia and says she is a bit con-cerned about the winter weather.While temperatures in her home-town Canberra can dip to aboutthe freezing point, she says shecan’t imagine what temperaturesof -25 C or -30 C will be like.

She arrives at Queen’s on therecommendation of a friend who

studied in Sweden and met a fel-low exchange student fromQueen’s.

She says she’s excited by theprospects the university offers,both inside and outside the class-room

“I definitely know there are alot of social events at Queen’s butthere is also a really strong sport-ing community and when I heardabout the free gym I thought thatwas great,” she says. “I walkedaround campus (Wednesday) andthere’s some really good facili-ties.”

Consider it a Queen’s winterritual: Exchange students fromaround the world arrive on cam-pus in the dead of winter and tryto settle in to a new universityand a new home.

Making the transition can beexciting for students. Add in thebiting cold of January, and all thata different culture can bring, andthe transition can feel more like achallenge.

Fortunately, at Queen’s thenew arrivals have a number of re-sources they can call on, with theQueen’s University InternationalCentre (QUIC) taking the lead.

The majority of exchange stu-dents arrive the week beforeclasses begin and this is the timefor them to explore and learnabout Queen’s, Kingston andCanada.

One of the people providing ahelping hand is Olumide Bolu, aninternational student advisor atQUIC. He knows what the stu-dents are going through. Arrivingin Canada from Nigeria in 2003,he made the transition himselfand now helps prepare and guideinternational students at Queen’s.

Some of the challenges are stillthe same he says – dealing withthe cold, travel documentationand health care – but there areothers he doesn’t always antici-pate as the role is “always evolv-ing.”

“When you look at the differ-ent groups of international stu-dents, they have different needs.Exchange students are typicallyhere for one semester so it’s criti-cal that they transition quicklyand have a good experience in

Canada,” Mr. Bolu says, addingthat while international studentspursuing a degree are at Queen’slonger, they also have more in-vested in being here. “So transi-tioning is key for all these cate-gories of students and what wedo here at QUIC is helping themtransition successfully.”

While the resources at QUICand its campus partners are avail-able throughout the year, the firstweek is key to building a solidfoundation. QUIC offers a num-ber of workshops such as “Learn-ing to Love Winter” and orienta-tion sessions are held as well.

The success of an exchange, ofcourse, isn’t just about the class-room. But again there is supportavailable to help foster new rela-tionships with the university andwith fellow students.

“One major concern interna-tional students have, including me(when I was a student), is the abil-ity to make friends,” Mr. Bolusays. “It can be very difficult, so alot of programming at QUIC is de-signed around social networking.”

To help make students makeconnections QUIC hosts eventssuch as a games night, a movienight and trips to gain a moreCanadian experience.

digenous andCanadian litera-tures, Dr. McK-egney says hefeels very fortu-nate to overseegraduate studiesat Queen’s in thetraditional terri-tories of the Haudenosaunee andAnishinaabe peoples. He pointsout that while he is involved in a

number of graduate-related initia-tives, the acting head of the De-partment of English Languageand Literature regularly utilizes acollaborative approach.

He is currently involved in thedevelopment of the MPhil degreein English Literature – a two-yearMaster’s Level degree with directentry into the doctoral program.He is also overseeing two experien-tial learning components for grad-uate programs. The first – the Lit-erary Internship –providesmaster’s students with work expe-rience that is directly related to lit-erary studies, including KingstonWritersFest, the Strathy LanguageUnit, and McGill-Queen’s Univer-sity Press. The second – the Pub-lishing Practicum –takes studentsthrough the revision and submis-sion stages of scholarly publishingwith the goal of achieving a pub-lishable piece by the end of the stu-dent’s first year of doctoral study.

In receiving the award, Dr.McKegney provides the followingadvice for incoming graduate co-ordinators:

“Be personally invested in thewellbeing and successes of yourgrad students, but do not taketheir struggles personally. Try tofocus on developing solutions toconcerns that arise without bear-ing the burden of responsibilityfor things beyond your control.

She also helped launch a newinitiative offering a combined pro-gram (BScH/MSc) that sees stu-dents in thefourth year ofan honours pro-gram to take upto two coursesin the depart-ment at thegraduate level,allowing themto enter the graduate programwith advanced standing.

Recently, Dr. Winn has devel-oped a proposal in collaborationwith the School of Computing forinterdisciplinary graduate pro-grams in biomedical informaticsthat include a diploma and profes-sional master’s. She has also de-veloped a proposal in collabora-tion with the offices ofPostgraduate and UndergraduateMedical Education for graduateprograms in medical sciences thatinclude a diploma and profes-sional master’s.

Dr. Winn also serves on a CIHRVanier Canada Graduate Scholar-ship selection committee.

One of Canada’s leading ex-perts in cardiology, Queen’s Uni-versity professor AdrianBaranchuk has been named one ofthe TD Bank’s 10 most influentialHispanic Canadians by the His-panic Business Alliance. Theawards recognize communitymembers who demonstrate influ-ence in education, achievements,volunteerism and/or entrepre-neurship.

This is the 10th anniversary ofthe award, and this year, the Sec-retary General of the Organizationof American States (OAS), Luis Al-magro has been invited to deliverthe awards during the ceremonyin Toronto.

“This is truly one of the great-est honours I have received in mylife,” says Dr. Baranchuk. “To berecognized as a leader is hum-bling and unexpected. I came toCanada with virtually nothing butI’ve worked very hard to establishmyself. Canada, and its healthcare system have facilitated my in-tegration into a new medical cul-ture and has allowed me to de-velop into the professional that Iam today.”

A native of Buenos Aires, Ar-gentina, Dr. Baranchuk earned hisMD from the University of BuenosAires in 1990. After beginning tobuild his profile as a cardiologist-electrophysiologist, Dr. Baranchukimmigrated to Canada in 2003. InSeptember 2003, Dr. Baranchukwas appointed as a clinical fellowin electrophysiology at McMasterUniversity. He joined the division

of cardiology at Queen’s in June2006.

In 2007, he created the Electro-physiology Training Program – atwo-year program at Queen’swhich teaches physicians fromaround the world new and sophis-ticated techniques to treat andcure cardiac arrhythmias. Theprogram has attracted physiciansfrom Canada, the United King-dom, Chile, Argentina, SouthAfrica, Emirates, Pakistan, Turkey,Dominican Republic and Ireland.

Dr. Baranchuk also foundedand led the Broadcasting ECGRounds to South-eastern Ontario(BESO project) – a programwhich allows Ontario physiciansand students to join weekly train-ing sessions in electrocardiologyat Queen’s. His last iBook calledElectrocardiography in practice:What to do? was released iniTunes in June 2016. The free ap-plication, which has been down-loaded more than 1,000 times, isdesigned to teach electrocardiog-

raphy in an interactive way.Through these teaching pro-

grams, Dr. Baranchuk has men-tored more than 40 medical stu-dents, 40 internal medicineresidents and many more cardiol-ogy residents, fellows and col-leagues from Queen’s and over-seas. Dr. Baranchuk now serves asthe head of the Kingston GeneralHospital Heart Rhythm Service.

“Being named one of the mostinfluential Hispanic Canadians isa true honour and recognizes Dr.

Baranchuk’s talent and drive,”says Dr. Steven Liss, Vice-Princi-pal (Research). “Not only is he aleading cardiologist, Dr.Baranchuk is a motivator in ourcommunity and has worked tire-lessly to ensure young studentsand young doctors achieve theirpotential.”

Dr. Baranchuk is currently theVice President of the Inter Ameri-can Society of Cardiology (IASC).He leads the IASC Academywhich allows trainees from LatinAmerica to attend courses and ob-serverships in top centers of NorthAmerica. Dr Baranchuk is thePresident Elect of the Interna-tional Society of Electrocardiologyand in this role, he engages col-leagues and researchers from theregion in educational and researchactivities.

Dr. Baranchuk says his life,both past and present, havedriven him to his present suc-cesses. “I am obligated to giveback because I am truly blessed inmy life,” he says with a smile.“About 80 per cent of the peopleliving in Latin America have nochance to pursue their dreams butI represent the 20 per cent that arelucky, that are blessed. This meansI need to help others reach theirdreams and goals. I am passionateabout that.”

The OAS consists of the 35 in-dependent states of the Americas,including Canada and the UnitedStates, and constitutes the mainpolitical, juridical, and social gov-ernmental forum in the NorthernHemisphere. The four main pillarsinclude democracy, human rights,security and development.

Two CCTG trials earn top honoursBY ANNE CRAIG,COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Two trials supported by theCanadian Cancer Trials Group(CCTG) based at Queen’s Univer-sity were selected by the CanadianCancer Society’s list of the top 10research impact stories for 2016.

The two trials – which revealednew techniques to improveglioblastoma survival in the eld-erly and demonstrated how ex-tending hormone therapy couldkeep breast cancer at bay, respec-tively – were presented at theAmerican Society of Clinical On-cology’s annual meeting.

“These trials are representa-tive of the key work of the CCTGto identify new cancer treat-

ments,” says Janet Dancey, CCTGdirector. “The group continues tobring forward the best ideas fornew treatments from Canadianinvestigators and prove their ben-efit in trials conducted acrossCanada and internationally. Theimpact of these results will res-onate and improve the outcomesfor patients with cancer aroundthe world.”

Chris O’Callaghan (Oncology)was the senior investigator onthe CE.6 trial, which examinedthe use of the cancer drug temo-zolomide in the treatment ofglioblastoma – an incurable formof brain cancer. The trial foundthat adding the drug to a short-ened course of radiation therapy,followed by monthly mainte-

nance doses, significantly im-proved the survival rate of eld-erly patients.

“The results of the CE.6 trialbuild on CCTG's previous work inestablishing the international stan-dard of care for the treatment ofglioblastoma by confirming theoptimal therapy for elderly pa-tients suffering from this disease,”says Dr. O’Callaghan.

Wendy Parulekar (Oncology)supervised the MA.17R trial,which examined the extension ofaromatase inhibitor treatment inpostmenopausal women withearly breast cancer. The studyfound that extending aromataseinhibitor treatment from five to 10years reduces the risk of recur-rence by 34 per cent.

Results of this trial mean thatwomen and their doctors will beable to make a more informed de-cision about whether they want toextend treatment.

“The selection of the MA.17Rtrial as a top 10 research impactstory of 2016 demonstrates thevalue of collaboration between patients and health care profession-als to test new treatment strategieaimed at improving breast canceroutcomes,” says Dr. Parulekar.“CCTG is committed to buildingon the results of MA.17R to under-stand the multidimensional im-pact of breast cancer therapies onpatient’s lives.”

At the Dec. 2 meeting, Queen’sBoard of Trustees approved thePolicy on Sexual Violence Involv-ing Queen's University Students.The policy – which outlines theoptions that are available to stu-dents affected by sexual violenceand the university’s responsibili-ties relating to awareness, educa-tion, training, disclosure and re-porting – was recently revised toalign with provincial legislation.

“Over the past year, theQueen’s community has workeddiligently to enhance campus re-sources to address and respond tosexual violence,” says PrincipalDaniel Woolf. “This policy is acrucial step in that process, andone that will benefit the entireQueen’s community.”

The development of both theoriginal and updated policies in-volved extensive consultationwith campus and communitystakeholders including students,staff, faculty, and subject matterexperts.

“I want to acknowledge andthank the many individuals andgroups who invested time andeffort into ensuring Queen’s hasa comprehensive policy on sex-ual violence,” says Provost andVice-Principal (Academic)Benoit-Antoine Bacon. “This wasvery much a collaborative effortled by the Sexual Violence Pre-vention and Response WorkingGroup.”

The updated policy includesdetails about the policies and pro-cedures to be followed in a vari-ety of situations, and outlines thedistinction between disclosureand reporting, confidentiality re-quirements, and the assessmentand investigation process, meet-ing the content requirements setout in Bill 132 and Regulation131/16.

Barb Lotan is the university’sinaugural sexual violence preven-tion and response coordinator,working out of a dedicated officeestablished within the HumanRights and Equity Office.

“The approval of the revisedpolicy is an important milestone;however, the work is not yetdone,” says Ms. Lotan. “Campus-wide sharing of informationabout the policy and the resourcesavailable for students is critical asis the continuation of training andeducation related to sexual vio-

lence prevention.”Recognizing that the issue of

sexual violence on universitycampuses is constantly evolving,the university will revisit the pol-icy and its associated resources asappropriate and at least everythree years.

Pilot project exploreswriting assessment serviceBY ANDREW CARROLL,GAZETTE EDITOR

Starting this January, Queen’swill be running a pilot programfor the writing assessment serviceTurnitin.

The test run of the online serv-ice will involve approximately 15courses for the winter session,says Peter Wolf, Associate Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning)and Director, Centre for Teachingand Learning, before the programis made available university-widein September 2017.

The strength of the program,Mr. Wolf points out, may be as anacademic integrity educationtool, helping guide users into be-coming better writers.

“We really see Turnitin as atool for students, for staff, faculty,that has tremendous potential toenhance writing and help us bemore assured of reflecting disci-plinary and scholarly approachesto building on existing knowl-edge,” he says “That’s what thisis all about – respecting whatcame before and building uponthat.”

Turnitin is currently used bynumerous post-secondary institu-tions across North America, with

more than 25 million users – in-structors and students – globally.

Ahead of the pilot a transitiongroup, chaired by Mr. Wolf andSusan Korba, Director, StudentAcademic Success Services(SASS), was formed to look at thesupports and resources that areavailable and to determine thesettings for the program at theuniversity.

Turnitin is a database thatstores written submissions andcompares them within and acrossinstitutions. For the upcoming pi-lot phase, however, the transitiongroup has decided that submis-sions at Queen’s will not be madeaccessible to any other institu-tion.

“As well, every course outlinewill make sure students are fullyaware of the use of Turnitin andeveryone will be informed thatwe are going to be collecting dataon the pilot that will inform fu-ture use,” Mr. Wolf says.

This will include piloting howSASS can best support studentsin meeting the standards of schol-arly writing via in-class work-shops.

“The use of Turnitin can rein-force the support that we alreadyprovide when we go into a class-

room and work with a professorto address student writingneeds,” Ms. Korba says, addingthat the program may broadenthe scope of these efforts. “This issomething that we address al-ready – how to paraphrase, howmuch quoting is too much, howmuch originality should there befrom a writer’s voice in a particu-lar paper and so on.”

Once a paper is submitted toTurnitin, the program provides areport on how closely it comparesto previously written materialthrough an analysis of word pat-terns. The writer can then ad-dress the issues before making afinal submission.

The Centre for Teaching andLearning is also piloting instruc-tor and TA supports to help makethe use of Turnitin effective andefficient. They are also exploringother ways to use Turnitin in thewider Queen’s community.

“It is seen primarily for use in-course but it can also be used byfaculty, staff and students to re-view their scholarly writing out-side of courses,” Mr. Wolf says.

Successive governments — bothLiberal and Conservative — havemanaged the complexities of de-fence procurement so poorly that itwill take years before the RoyalCanadian Navy, the Royal CanadianAir Force, and the Canadian Army re-gain the capabilities they need.While new prime ministers invari-ably come to power promising to fixproblems inherited from their pred-ecessors, getting it right has re-mained frustratingly elusive.

As a historical and religious term“diaspora” has existed for manyyears, but it only became an aca-demic and analytical concept in the1980s and ’90s.

Within its various usages, twobroad directions stand out: diasporaas a dispersion of people from anoriginal homeland, and diaspora as aclaim of identity that expresses aform of belonging and also keepsalive a sense of difference.

Between Dispersion and Belongingcritically assesses the meaning andpractice of diaspora first by engag-ing with the theoretical life historiesof the concept, and then by examin-ing a range of historical case studies.Essays in this volume draw from di-aspora formations in the pre-mod-ern Indian Ocean region, read dias-pora against the concept ofindigeneity in the Americas, reassessthe claim for a Swedish diaspora, in-terrogate the notion of an “invisible”English diaspora in the Atlanticworld, calibrate the meaning of theIrish diaspora in North America, andconsider the case for a global Indianindentured-labour diaspora.

Through these studies the con-tributors demonstrate that an inher-ent appeal to globality is central tomodern formulations of diaspora.

They are not global in the sense thatdiasporas span the entire globe,rather they are global precisely be-cause they are not bound by arbi-trary geopolitical units.

In examining the ways in whichacademic and larger society discussdiaspora, Between Dispersion and Be-longing presents a critique of mod-ern historiography and positionsthat critique in the shape of globalhistory.
